Security Stuff + Contact Info
2008-06-04 16:53:00 I think I will write a full blog post later on some security stuff, but really quickly I wanted to point out that everyone really should be reading Jason Dean's security posts. It's always good to see that we are doing things the right way, and see where we are missing the boat security wise. Between his posts, and the comments its a great resource for people of all skill levels. Now, for the blast of contact links. I have joined a plethora of new networking sites lately, so here is the myriad of ways to contact or follow me for those that like such things. Age of Conan MMORPG Review
2008-06-01 18:01:00 Age of Conan Review : Hyborian Adventures I have been playing Age of Conan for a couple weeks now. I started playing just after it launched. This review is from the point of view of someone who is only level 22 on their main character. So take everything I say with a bit of salt. First off, comparing this to World of Warcraft is going to be hard. There are some similar aspects, but mostly they made a different kind of MMORPG . Some of which I like, some of which I am unsure about as of yet. But before I get into game mechanics and playability and all that I think I will write a bit about system specs, visuals and such. I started playing the game with a GeForce 7600. The card was pretty good at the time I bought it and it is above the minimum specs, though not quite at the recommended specs. The game itself had to be run in low visual mode (there are three quick visual settings, and lots of advanced ways totweak visuals). I got 1...
Comment Moderation Added
2008-05-20 21:22:00 Damn you all. I had to do it. Comment spam just got out of control and I am angry. I don't mind deleting a comment now and then. But the 50+ last night and handful today have just put me over the edge. I am VERY sorry to do it. Not a lot of you comment, which is fine, but it really is a hassle for everyone. [More]
I Remember When
2008-05-20 06:00:00 Just a trip down memory lane. Enjoy and add your own memories. I remember when: $20 / Hour sounded like a lot of money DBML was replaced by CFML 216 colors of mostly nasty yellow, green and blue A REALLY expensive TV was $500 Perl was the most popular way to write 'back end' code for a website. Web hosting was local and profitable Your ISP lived nearby ASP became the most popular solution IHTML was packaged with Website Pro (or something like that) Homesite was for still for sale Spam was funny Online Journals were just called online journals and nobody cared about traffic and readership A splash page was 'hot' Newspapers still mattered Cable news still mattered Viruses just tried to destroy your computer rather than take it over All of my clients sent me email one day saying "I Love You" Ruby On Rails was thought to be perfect I weighed 20 pounds less and had more hair

2317-616: I Want to Believe ... I'm Not the First
2008-05-06 20:42:00 A Guest Blog Post: Liberty Hardy is a part-time book slinger and writer living with her evil, evil cat in lovely Portsmouth, N.H. She's going for her "Amazing Screw-On Head" tattoo next week. The past couple years, I have been seeking to improve my geek rating. I don't just want to be a geek, I want to be a well-educated geek. I want to be able to appoint myself a science fiction vixen. [More]
Open Source Thoughts
2008-05-06 14:42:00 There has been a lot of chatter regarding open source lately. Good and exciting stuff all in all. I thought I would just spend a few minutes pondering open source as it pertains to stuff I work on. The most significant thing I have done programming wise is Savvy Content Manager. It isn't open source, but believe it or not people still use non-open source software. :-) We have talked about going open source in the past. It isn't a model I am familiar with other than being a consumer. Heck, I don't even know if I capitalize the O and S... But to be frank, business is business. If going open source meant more money for the company then it would be a no brainer. I have talked to the president about it and that's the bottom line. Quick Note: No, this doesn't mean we are going to do it. Nor does it mean we feel pressure to do so. We are profitable and quite happy right now. It's just fun to think about stuff like this from time... More About: Open Source , Open , Thoughts , Source , Open-Source
Post Your Presentations from CF.Objective
2008-05-06 14:28:00 Now that CF.Objective is over its time to try to remember all those presentations we watched, or track down the ones we missed. Luckily Todd Sharp has released a new site that will archive presentations online. Its pretty sweet. Trouble is, he launched it during cf.O and lots of people missed it since they were so busy (and had spotty web access). So this is just a quick request to the presenters, please post your stuff to SlideSix.com so we can review it. More About: Post , Presentations
YUI + Yahoo Maps Ajax JS dont get along
2008-05-04 23:02:00 If you're using yahoo's ajax api you include a js file at the top of your page that loads much of the JS needed. This code conflicts with parts of YUI. <script type="text/javascript" src="http://api.maps.yahoo.com/ajaxy map?v=3.8&appid=yourstuffhere"&g t;</script> I use ColdFusion which includes YUI in some of its UI controls. Two things I have found thus far that don't work. [More] More About: Yahoo , Ajax , Maps , Yahoo!
CF.Objective So Far
2008-05-02 20:29:00 The conference has gone well so far. It is my first time at cf.o and I wasn't sure what to expect. The attendance is great. I think higher then organizers had anticipated. The hotel is fantastic. The room is huge, the food is good and staff has been very helpful and friendly. I haven't been to any sessions yet. As a sponsor I am at the booth most of the time. I do have plans to attend some though. Specifically the Intro to Model Glue (I hear good things), and sessions on Transfer and ColdSpring. [More]
CF.Objective Here I Come
2008-04-30 16:42:00 I fly out tomorrow morning for CF.Objective so today I am double checking all my flights, hotel, bus and other arrangements as well as trying to finish up some quick code and square clients away. Since Savvy Software is a sponsor, we will have a table set up, so I need to figure out how to fit all that stuff into something feasible to carry on a plane. I did ship the mousepad/notepads ahead of time. If collapse a 20" monitor and put it into my suitcase, what are the odds it will survive the travel? I am really looking forward to catching up with many of my CF friends. Please stop by the booth and say hi. My friend Ken Dunnington will be working the booth with me, so say hi to him too. :-) [More]
Group Advertising for ColdFusion Sites
2008-04-24 15:29:00 A few of us have started using a new Advertising service called AdRoll.com What Adroll does is two fold. 1) you can place advertising slots for sale, such as the top right spot on my site. IF that spot isn't purchased through adRoll for your minimum price range it automatically shows other adcode that you provide, such as google AdSense. For example right now I have adsense showing. CFSilence - The Mystery Deepens
2008-04-23 15:55:00 As many of you know, Todd Sharp has gone off the deep end. Or at least that is what he wants us to think. You see, Brian Rinaldi noticed a theme in posts, and others have noticed it in titles and other hints. For each of his "Layer" posts, there is a title associated with a letter. Take them all together and thus far we have SLIDE. But what does that mean? Is he trying to tell us something? Is there a new project? Maybe he is changing his name? Slide Sharp. I like it! To find the answer we must dig deeper. Just where exactly I am not sure. I spent a couple hours last night starting with his first blog posts 2005/6. But it turns out there is nothing there. At least thus far. Just 2007 and 2008 to go through now. Anyone else have any ideas? Whatever you do, don't search for SLIDE in google images. *shudder* More About: Mystery

Conference Travel Schedule - WTB Buddy
2008-04-22 22:21:00 I figured I would post my schedule for some upcoming trips. If you happen to be going to the same place and flying same time we can catch up, or avoid each other. Whatever seems more appropriate. Oh, and even though I am gone, the house isn't empty. So all you thieves - don't even bother. [More] More About: Travel , Schedule , Buddy , Conference

Credit Cards - Shame On Everyone
2008-04-17 23:01:00 In the wake of the massive loan failures of many banks worldwide due to bad mortgages and other risky loans I have been more skeptical of corporate self governance, let alone the governments ability to see beyond itself to address real issues that are obvious, before they become crisis. How many corporate executives really think that their risky high interest loans and credit cards are not ultimately harmful for most consumers? Who among us right now doesn't hold those banks accountable to their own misery? I have little sympathy for them and have zero interest in bailing them out. I have only some sympathy for poor home buyers (first time home buyers new to the system and easily conned). [More] More About: Credit Cards , Credit , Cards , Shame

Super Mario Brothers Theme Via Bottles and Race Car = crazy
2008-04-15 15:11:00 I have very fond memories of playing Super Mario Brothers as a kid. Great game on all levels. I just came across this video of a man who lines up bottles filled with water and then has a remote controlled car drive next to them. The car has some sort of tapping stick so it makes the bottles chime. Chime out the full theme to Super Mario Brothers that is. How long did it take I wonder? http://view.break.com/487616 - Watch more free videos More About: Race , Crazy

Google indexing content within form submission areas
2008-04-11 21:39:00 I was just looking at Matt Cutts blog and noticed he mentions that google is now indexing content found only by submitting form fields. It seems they just started to, and only do so for some sites right now, but it is an interesting development. For good or bad, depending on the page content and need of the web site. Matt lists an example of a drop down with countries to select before moving to an inside page. Another example is many sites have a jump to box saying something like "I want to:" with values in the box. I see this often in municipal web sites. I want to renew my license, pay my parking ticket, look up my property tax assessment, etc. [More] More About: Google , Content , Submission , Form , Indexing

Warcraft Blog Aggregator (list of wow blogs)
2008-04-07 14:58:00 I launched a new site this weekend. It is a WOW blog aggregator. What is a blog aggregator? It is a huge list of warcraft blogs compiled into one master RSS feed. So you can visit one site or subscribe to one feed to get a quick rundown on up to the minute blog posts relating to World of Warcraft . It is updated every 15 minutes or so, and right now I have around 150 blogs. That number will grow over time. A few notes. I have taken care to make sure I am not pulling traffic from others. These blog entries are only very short teasers, with full and clear links to the actual blog owner and full entry. The entries are also not indexed by Google and such, so there is no issue regarding page rank and SEO. [More] More About: Aggregator , Blogs , Blog , List
coldfusion 8.1 update note
2008-04-04 16:49:00 For reasons I no longer remember, I put my cfide folder in a non default place when installing CF8 on a few of my servers. Not a big deal really. I upgraded to CF 8.1 today and everything went quite well, however I noticed that the installer didn't see my cfide path, and instead prompted me to use the default one. So if you are updating to CF8.1 and don't have it in the usual area, don't expect the installer to know that. Luckily the installer does prompt you to confirm the path, so its easy to adjust. RPM's Cool Jukebox Flex App
2008-03-31 14:40:00 This morning I am playing/listening too a Flex powered jukebox of 16,000+ tracks of original music. A local group here recnetly put out a challenge for musicians to write and record an entire album in the month of February. 700+ groups from around the world signed up and completed that challenge. The listening party was last Friday and the new jukebox to listen to all of that music is now up and available. The jukebox offers quite a bit of flexibility. Musicians can log into their account to update their track info, upload cover art, etc. We can create your accounts and you can build play lists, mark favorite music etc. I especially like the equalizer built into the header. The music controls are docked at the bottom, but drag it around to have it float and give you more artist information. The main screen shows 100 random tracks, but you can click on library to search through the many thousands currently available. [More] More About: Jukebox , Cool
Spam Email of the Day: Spam about Filitering Spam
More articles from this author:2008-03-26 19:38:00 We all get a lot of spam. Most of it is filtered by gmail for me (we use google apps for email). One got through and the irony is really pretty sweet. Read on and I am sure it will be clear why. BTW this is at least the second exact same email I have gotten in a week. I especially like that their mechanism to be removed from the list is a link to an email with no directions as to what to say/do. I went to their home page, and at the very bottom is a whole lot of white space (lots of BR tags), then a login blurb for some reason, then a counter! Yes a counter. I haven't seen a counter on a corporate site in a good long time. BTW it is at 93371 (I reloaded a few times just for old times sake). [More] More About: Spam , Email 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 |
