Sony Ericsson plays color by number with the K770i
2008-01-22 00:00:00 Seems new color additions are all the rage chez Sony Ericsson these days, yesterday we heard whispering about the K850 getting a new housing color and today we see the K770i get its turn. The two new colors are called Henna Brown (pictured above) and Soft Black. No word on when we can expect these to land in retail, but it can't be too far off. Follow the read link for a pile of pictures.[Via SlashPhone] More About: Color , Plays
The MacBook Air
2008-01-18 00:00:00 Apple just announced the 0.16-inch thin MacBook Air -- a laptop so thin it fits in a manila envelope. The new machine features a full-size keyboard and LED-backlit 13.3-inch display with built-in iSight, and the new larger trackpad supports multi-touch gestures. Just like the iPhone, you'll be able to pan around, pinch to zoom, and rotate with two fingers, and move windows with a flick. Apple got the size down by using the same 1.8-inch 80GB drive that's in the iPod classic, but you'll be able to order a 64GB SSD as an option. The Air eschews optical media, but there's a separate external you can snag for $99 and Apple's also announced a feature called Remote Disk that'll let the Air get data off the optical drive in any PC or Mac running the Remote Disk software. Pricing starts at $1799, and the Air will be shipping in two weeks. Now with real-live multitouch action! Apple Macbook Air Guided Tour Macbook Air TV Ad
T-Mobile Germany rolls deep with 16GB version of MDA Ameo
2008-01-18 00:00:00 That mighty beast of a smartphone, HTC's Athena -- known better as the Advantage in retail trim -- is getting a modest upgrade in its MDA Ameo guise on T-Mobile Germany . The big news is the bump in the Ameo's hard drive from 8GB to 16GB (would be nice if that was an SSD, but you can't win 'em all) while other changes include a "modified arrangement" of the keyboard (their words, not ours) and the inclusion of Office Mobile 6.1. It'll run €459 (about $675) when it hits in April. And no, we're pretty sure the 16GB hard drive and rearranged keyboard don't make it any less awkward in the hand.[Via the::unwired] More About: T-Mobile , Deep , Version
ASUS M930 gets official, Nokia styling and all
2008-01-18 00:00:00 Yep, pretty much everything we'd heard about the upcoming M930 from ASUS has turned out to be the real deal, making the brick-like device nearly a dead ringer for Nokia 's E90 communicator with Windows Mobile doing the dirty work in place of S60. The exterior nets you a traditional QVGA display and numeric keypad, while unfolding the beast yields a slightly larger 400 x 240 display along with a full QWERTY board. Internal storage clocks in at 256MB with 64MB of RAM, there's a 2 megapixel autofocus cam around back, and you get the usual microSD expansion, WiFi, and Bluetooth. Oddly, the whole package runs Windows Mobile 6 Standard -- not Professional -- so you can just put away any hopes and dreams of touching the display with a stylus. Look for a public reveal at CeBIT in March, so retail availability isn't expected before that.[Via MoDaCo] More About: Asus , Official

iPhone putting on a Lotus Notes suit?
2008-01-18 00:00:00 If you're looking to gain respect for your gear as a serious business-class tool, there's no better way than to infiltrate those Big Four accounting firms still using Lotus Notes . According to a piece carried by the Associated Press, Lotus Notes eMail is coming to Apple's iPhone and iPod touch. We kid you not. The announcement is expected as early as Sunday the 20th, the day IBM's annual Lotusphere conference kicks off in Orlando. The software is free for those with existing licenses which means IT is going to have a hell of a time keeping it out of users' hands. If true, the application would presumably be the first official, third-party application developed with Apple's new iPhone SDK. IBM is also expected to announce their free Lotus Symphony flavor of OpenOffice for the Mac at the same time. An IBM spokesman seemingly confirmed the announcements by saying that Apple and IBM have, "a lot in common. We're going to cross-pollinate." Let's just hope they manage to... We're guessing this is the E-TEN glofiish V900
2008-01-18 00:00:00 Seeing how this allegedly leaked shot of the upcoming glofiish V900 from E-TEN looks exactly like E-TEN's own promo shot for Mobile World Congress, we're thinking it's the real deal. It actually looks a heck of a lot better now than it that little tiny thumbnail we saw before (dare we say high end?) with tasteful chrome accents, a fairly aggressive display-to-case size ratio, and a front cam for video calling, suggesting this sucker's packing at least UMTS, if not better. That sexy display will come in handy, too, considering that the V900 is going to be packing a veritable what's what of mobile TV standards when it rolls out -- not so much on the MediaFLO, but then again, we're not sure it makes the "what's what" cut, anyway.
Pink Palm Centro now official, Hello Kitty branding nowhere to be found
2008-01-15 00:00:00 As if there was any doubt that the rumored pink Centro was going to happen... well, go ahead and put those doubts to bed. Palm 's website is now showing the pink (or light red, if you will) miniature Garnet device for Sprint in all its glory, sporting the same $99.99 asking price as its alternatively-hued cousins. It's apparently available (or will be available shortly) in a Sprint store near you, so if the whole mail order thing isn't your cup of tea, head on over there and have a gander.[Via Palm Infocenter] More About: Branding , Pink , Hello Kitty , Kitty
LG's silver Prada gets a new on-screen QWERTY
2008-01-15 00:00:00 Mmmm, the LG Prada (AKA, LG-KE850) was just turned out in silver. 18 European countries including the UK, France, Germany, Spain and Italy will see the new version of LG's touchscreen later this month. Besides the color change the phone now features a proper on-screen QWERTY, not just T9 -- thank you LG! Really, that's all we could hope for. [Via Akihabara News] More About: Screen , Silver , Qwerty
HTC S730 gets previewed
2008-01-15 00:00:00 The Vox and Libra have been largely overlooked in the US market (though Verizon's finally looking into fixing that issue), which is a crying shame considering the cool side-sliding QWERTY WinMo Standard form factor that remains largely unique to HTC. The S730 succeeds the Vox, adding most notably 3G and a supposedly better keyboard, and Tracy and Matt's Blog have given the bugger a thorough once-over. It seems that the phone is a little fatter than the already-fat Vox, a potential problem for those hoping to discretely pack it in a pants pocket; battery life was a little weak, too, with normal usage resulting in a nearly drained device at the end of the day. On the positive side, though... well, where the heck else are you going to find this form factor running 3G and Windows Mobile 6 Standard?[Via pocketnow.com]
Sprint prepped to launch Samsung SPH-M800
2008-01-13 00:00:00 Samsung is on a roll this morning, though this isn't as official as the SGH-F490 announced a few minutes ago, but the branding suggest this will show up at Sprint . Sadly, the word is that the 5 megapixel cam found in the F490 has been replaced here with a 2 megapixel shooter, but it does rock EV-DO, and for that we give thanks. No word on when this'll appear or how much it'll cost, but we expect we'll hear more soon. More About: Samsung , Launch , Prep
E-TEN glofiish V900 surfaces, flush with mobile TV support
2008-01-13 00:00:00 Very little is known about the glofiish V900 from E-TEN -- in fact, nothing is known about it other than what we have on this promotional image advertising E-TEN's presence at the GSM Association's Mobile World Congress next month. What few details are revealed here, though, are pretty freakin' notable. The V900 apparently supports DVB-H, DVB-T, T-DMB, and DAB broadcasts, unifying half a world's worth of digital television and radio broadcast standards in a single device. We guess we'll have to wait until the big show in a few weeks to figure out the rest, but if we were the betting types, we'd wager that it'll probably be available in black and blue.[Via Unwired View] More About: Support , Flush , Mobile TV
Asus shows off GeForce 9500M GS-equipped G1Sn laptop
2008-01-13 00:00:00 Asus already let out word of at least one new laptop that'd be packing NVIDIA's new GeForce 9500M GS graphics chipset, but it looks like the company's already busy spreading that welcome addition to some of its other offerings, as evidenced by this familiar-looking model HotHardware spotted at CES. Dubbed the G1Sn, the laptop's an update to the company's G1S gaming laptop, and it apparently boasts mostly the same specs, with the exception of those graphics, of course (a 512MB version in this case). No word on a price or release just yet, but we wouldn't expect Asus to sit on this one for too long. More About: Laptop , Asus , Geforce

Nokia N82 Spotted in White
2008-01-13 00:00:00 It's nice to see devices created in other colors than what they are originally shown or demoed in. Even though the front cover of the N82 is still that nice polished aluminum silver, the back cover is white. And you know what my next comment is so I will refrain from saying it!! Samsung Access, AT&T's other MediaFLO launch phone
2008-01-13 00:00:00 We already know that the Prada-esque LG CU920 Vu is one of AT&T's two launch handsets in support of its MediaFLO-based mobile TV rollout, but what's the other one the carrier mentions? Mobiledia has scored gorgeous shots of this not-so-gorgeous phone, the A827 "Access " from Samsung , and the combination of AT&T branding and a dedicated "TV" button next to the d-pad has us believing that it'll be stepping up to the plate for that role. Unlike the Vu, the Access seems to be a lower-end handset on account of a 1.3 megapixel cam, unremarkable design, and smallish display, so we're certainly hoping its price point reflects the specs accordingly. Good to see that AT&T wants to bring mobile TV to every price segment, we suppose. More About: Phone , Launch
Samsung's GX-20 DSLR leaked
2008-01-13 00:00:00 Apparently, Samsung is about to drop some extra-hot DSLR action on the world -- the 14.6-megapixel monster that is the GX-20. The camera -- which was apparently leaked on a Norwegian website (though later removed) -- features sensor-based image stabilization, a 2.7-inch LCD, one-press RAW formatting, and ISO up to 3200. The camera appears to sport some ruggedized components as well, with resistance to rain, sand, and dust, as well as something called "double dust removal" on the image sensor. There's some speculat"gx-20"ion that this camera is the product of the unholy union between Samsung and Pentax, and that this model may in fact be the Pentax K20D which is set to be released. Stay tuned to this space for more info. More About: Leaked
Japan's getting a Mint Green PSP, you aren't
2008-01-13 00:00:00 Sony's been quite liberal with its color options for the PSP over in Japan so far, and it doesn't look like things are switching up much with the PSP-2000 "slim." This time Sony's busting out a rather appetizing "Mint Green " PSP to the expectant hordes that haven't already gone broke buying the endless iterations already answered by the company. Of course, there's no word or expectation of an US release, so we're off to the art supplies shop for another set of acrylics.[Via Joystiq] More About: Mint Green
The iPhone's storied journey from Steve's brain to your hand
2008-01-13 00:00:00 Come, reader. Take a step into our very special Engadget Blog Archive 2000™ device, watch as we wave our fingers through the air and say, "Doo-do-dodo, doo-do-dodo," and think back to this time last year when industry conferences CES and MacWorld overlapped, overworked (and heavily caffeinated) tech writers tripped over themselves to cover both, and Apple introduced a little product called the iPhone. Wired's got a look at the development of the groundbreaking handset and, though most of this may be a rehash for our gadget-savvy readers, there are some interesting moments documented in the piece: The chronology of the failed Motorola ROKR; the porting of OS X to the iPhone (which didn't start until early 2006); and the year Apple engineers spent working on a tablet PC, whose tech was obviously rolled into the iPhone's multitouch display. It's worth a stroll down the tattered corridors of your memory before El-Jobso's Macworld keynote next week. More About: Journey , Brain , Hand

Jabra launches luxury JX20 Pura Titanium Edition
2008-01-13 00:00:00 Jabra launched this sleek thing at CES this week, with a body crafted from Titanium and glossy black accents, it is definitely looking the business. This new offering was designed by Jacob Jensen, the same fella who created Jabra's JX10 headset -- though this venture has way less gold. The device's specs are posted as having up to 6-hour talk time, Bluetooth 2.0, auto pairing, USB charging -- this is a must in our opinion -- a couple ear hooks , and a goodly assortment of ear gels. Though, with an MSRP of $179, we're thinking this will find its way onto a limited collection of ears.[Via PhoneArena] More About: Luxury , Edition , Jabra , Pura

Kwari Gameplay Demonstration
2008-01-13 00:00:00 New online FPS concept. Buy Ammo. Fight. Make a Killing. Kwari is a first-person shooter multiplayer online game, the first game of its kind with participants competing against each other for money. Players fund their accounts up front, buy "ammunition" from Kwari Limited, and are matched against other players of similar strength in groups of 16 to 64. A player who is hit pays to the hitter an amount that was arranged in advance (between 1 eurocent and 1 euro). Players can also earn money by collecting and holding various objects; "The Pill" is the most lucrative one and renders its holder visible to other players through walls. Players pay into a jackpot to be paid out regularly to the pill holder. Strict anonymity of the participants is ensured to avoid the possibility of real-world retaliation. Alienware Area-51 m15x release info revealed
2008-01-13 00:00:00 Alienware made quite a splash when it announced its new Area -51 m15x and m17x laptops a couple of months back, but anyone actually planning on buying one has had to put up with quite a wait for any firm release details. That's now changed in a big way, however, as two of the m15x models are available to order immediately, with the third promised soon. Unfortunately for those looking for a bargain, the two available now are the higher end models, coming in at $2,099 and $2,699, with the "low-end" $1,499 model only listed as "coming soon." Of course, you can't expect everything to be let loose at once, and Alienware still seems to be dragging things out with the 17-inch model, although we wouldn't expect it to be too much longer before it makes itself known. Samsung BlackJack II launches Friday on AT&T
2007-11-23 00:00:00 Hoping to catch a little Black Friday love, Samsung and AT&T will be launching the BlackJack II at the tail end of this week, November 23. The Windows Mobile 6 Standard device -- successor to AT&T's pretty darned popular BlackJack -- features integrated GPS, a 2 megapixel camera, HSDPA, support for Video Share, and stereo Bluetooth and will be available both in the original's black (albeit a bit glossier) and in "red wine." Black launches first, with red wine following on December 6 for $149.99 on contract after rebates. More About: Blackjack
Samsung announces U900 FlipShot for Verizon
2007-11-23 00:00:00 Look familiar? It should -- we've known that the A990's replacement has been stewing on the burner for a while now, and here it is in official form. The U900 FlipShot from Samsung is positioned as Verizon 's ultimate, do-all multimedia powerhouse without venturing into smartphone territory, offering a 3 megapixel autofocus camera, TV out capability, microSD slot (what good would that healthy cam be otherwise?), stereo Bluetooth, QVGA internal and 128 x 96 external displays, support for VZ Navigator, and a rotating top half. Look for the black version to launch on Verizon's website while Best Buy grabs the red on the 26th of the month for $199.99 on contract. More About: Anno , Flipshot
How to sync an iPhone over WiFi without iTunes
2007-11-23 00:00:00 Now that the Zune has upped the ante by including WiFi syncing out of the box, it looks like owners of other devices are starting to rig up solutions of their own -- and the iPhone setup developed by eddanx seems to come closest to the ease of the Zune. The system relies on the WinAmp plugin ml_ipod, which supports syncing to shared folders, and requires a jailbroken iPhone and a little SSH / SFTP softshoe. Of course, by giving up iTunes, you give up contact, calendar, movie, and phone syncing as well, but who cares -- you're wireless now, baby. Check the read link for the full instructions. Samsung prepping Symbian-powered i450?
2007-08-17 00:00:00 Samsung seems to be on quite an S60 kick lately (gotta make use of that bought-and-paid-for license somehow!), not to say we'd know it in the States. Just Another Mobile Phone Blog indicates that the SGH-i450 is yet another handset in the Symbian family tree, a somewhat attractive slider (from what we can make of this picture, anyway) featuring 3.6Mbps HSDPA, QVGA display, 2 megapixel cam, 1GB of onboard storage plus microSD, A2DP, and S60 3rd Edition. Owing to the triband GSM radio, we won't see this one either, but who knows -- maybe if we keep grousing about it we'll eventually get one we can use. More About: Samsung , Prep
Unlocking iPhone from AT&T gets easier, still a pain
More articles from this author:2007-08-16 00:00:00 So you say writing SIMs all by your lonesome isn't part of your daily routine, but you're still interested in freeing the iPhone from AT&T's surly bonds? Yeah, we can't blame you -- we're pretty much in the same boat -- so we're glad to see that an ever-so-slightly easier unlocking trick has bubbled out of the hive mind just a week after the original. This new hackery involves a specialized SIM card called a "Turbo SIM" manufactured by the Czech Republic's BLADOX. The idea behind the Turbo SIM is that you can add... well, stuff to the Turbo SIM, sandwich it between your regular SIM and your phone, and the loaded material then becomes available to the handset; traditionally, that "stuff" is value-add software like customized SMS directories, security, logging, and the like. In this case, though, the chip is used to pass through the original AT&T SIM's identifying information to the phone while preserving the calling capability of the Carrier X SIM ...
