Wearable blood pressure sensor offers 24/7 continuous monitoring
2009-08-17 07:54:00 High blood pressure constitutes one of the principal vital signs of your body and is a common risk factor for heart attacks, strokes and aneurysms, so diagnosing and monitoring it are critically important. However, with all this technology around us, getting reliable blood pressure readings is not always easy.Visits to the doctor's office can provoke anxiety that distorts blood pressure readings, and even when accurate, such visits provide only one-time snapshots of the patient's condition. To overcome these obstacles, MIT engineers have built a wearable blood pressure sensor that can provide continuous, 24-hour monitoring.Blood pressure does tend to change during the day. When we wake up, it typically is somewhat higher than it is after we've had a chance to sit down or .eat some breakfast. So, continuous monitoring offers a much broader image of one's cardiovascular health. The new monitor, which loops around the wrist and the index finger, is just as accurate as traditional c... BrainPort Device Lets Blind "See" with Their Tongues
2009-08-16 10:22:00 Ok. This one got me twisted the first time I read it on the internet. It seems that scientists are currently developing a pair of sunglasses wired to an electric "lollipop" that really helps the visually impaired regain optical sensations via a different pathway.Neuroscientist Paul Bach-y-Rita hypothesized in the 1960s that "we see with our brains not our eyes." This new device trades on that thinking and aims to partially restore the experience of vision for the blind and visually impaired by relying on the nerves on the tongue's surface to send light signals to the brain.About two million optic nerves are required to transmit visual signals from the retina—the portion of the eye where light information is decoded or translated into nerve pulses—to the brain's primary visual cortex. The magic device is called BrainPort and is currently being developed by neuroscientists at Middleton, Wisc.–based Wicab, Inc.How does it work?Visual data are collected through a small digital vi... Robotic Technologies are no longer a thing of the future
2009-08-08 22:43:00 We still live in an era of modern information technology where some people just can't get it right. For the religious right, it often seems that scientists think too far into the depths of the human genome, we dive and people are not more people and, therefore, stem cells, genetic mutations and are therefore unacceptable. Other people are intrigued by the fact that anyone can be found everywhere on the globe with mobile phones, and they believe that the tracking technology is too far and they want to move to the North Pole. Scientists have one ultimate goal: to strength the world of science. They believe that everything they do is for the welfare of mankind, maybe forgetting that it is not always the case. Unlike natural scientists who are religious and others just a single scientist who has just a reverse position, even the most insensitive forewarning tech group of scientists seem to be worried. What is it? AI. Artificial intelligence. Robots making robots, robots learning , whic... More About: Robotic , Future , Technologies , The Future
Spiraling Skyscraper Farms for a Future Manhattan
2009-02-17 09:59:00 As the world’s population continues to skyrocket and cities strain under the increased demand for resources, skyscraper farms offer an inspired approach towards creating sustainable vertical density. One of three finalists in this year’s Evolo Skyscraper Competition Eric Vergne’s Dystopian Farm project envisions a future New York City interspersed with elegantly spiraling biomorphic structures that will harness cutting-edge technology to provide the city with its own self-sustaining food source. If we consider the future needs of our cities, few urban designs address the world’s burgeoning population better than vertical farms. It is a known fact that by 2050 nearly 80% of the world’s population will reside in urban centers, and 109 hectares of arable land will be needed to feed them. These organic structures you see in pictures abowe will harness systems such as airoponic watering, nutrient technology and controlled lighting and CO2 levels to meet the food demands of futur... Company claims new cell phone chip neutralizes radiation
2009-02-08 08:26:00 A Belgian health products distributor plans to introduce a new stick-on cell phone chip that somehow counters the effects of heat and radiation in cell phones that some studies say could cause cancer. The company, called Omega Pharma, will start selling its E-waves phone chip in pharmacies throughout Belgium starting tomorrow, and will eventually make the product available in other countries. The launch is being sold in a sea of unanswered questions, including the following:1. Do cell phones really cause cancer? In the past 20 years, we've gone from nobody using cell phones to everybody using them. Where's the brain-cancer epidemic?2. Is this new chip yet another quack fix designed only to profit from public fears about cell phones? 3. Will anyone else besides the company test this product? 4. Is the chip itself safe? How does it work? Why should we trust it? If this thing sells, which it might, what does that say about public fears about cell phones? What should the handset make... The Jumbo Jet Hostel
2009-02-05 08:45:00 When a jumbo jet is not able to fly, it’s usually sold for scrap or something. But Swedish entrepreneur Oscar Dios had a better idea for the 30-year-old junker he bought. This jumbo jet transformed into an unusual and amazing hotel. Boeing 747, dubbed Jumbo Hostel, is parked outside Stockholm’s Arlanda Airport. This airplane is abandoned for six years, after flying for Singapore Airlines, PanAm and the Swedish leasing company Transjet, ever since 1976.Dios' idea came at the right time. The plane was taking a lot of space, and there was neded a hotel at that time. Then th The Jumbo Hostel was born. It can accomodate 74 people, at the moment, in 25 simple, 70’s style rooms. The jet’s upper deck has been transformed into a conference hall, while the cockpit has been converted into a wedding chappel. You can book a room by clicking over here.

Possible Cure for Diabetes Found, Ignored by Big Pharma
2009-01-27 09:49:00 Irving Weissman discovered a treatment 12 years ago that might have saved the lives of thousands of women with advanced breast cancer, but pharmaceutical companies weren’t interested in developing the therapy. Though that interest is finally being reignited, Weissman doesn’t pull any punches. “I hate to say I told you so,” he said.Weissman is a professor of pathology & developmental biology at Stanford University, spoke Wednesday & Thursday as part of the Columbia University Department of Religion’s Bampton Lecture series. The lecture series is modeled after a centuries-old Oxford series of the same name, & invites famous authorities in their respective fields to give talks on various issues of interest to the religious community. In Wednesday’s lecture, Weissman laid out the conceptual foundation of his work—that stem cells are rare, self-renewing, & can regenerate body tissues. Weissman repeatedly expressed frustration that while plenty of of his discoveries seemed to... More About: Pharma , Diabetes
Coffee may raise child cancer risk
2009-01-27 09:44:00 Experts say caffeine may damage the DNA of children in the womb. They become more susceptible to leukaemia, the most common cancer in children.Women who drink coffee or tea during pregnancy may increase their baby’s odds of developing cancer, doctors believe.Researcher Dr Marcus Cooke said there was a ‘good likelihood’ the study would make a connection. Previous research has shown that caffeine damages DNA, cutting cells’ ability to fight off cancer triggers such as radiation. To establish the link, scientists at Leicester University will scrutinise the caffeine intake of hundreds of pregnant women and compare the results with blood samples from their children after birth.‘Although there’s no evidence at all of a link between caffeine and cancer, we’re putting four and four together and saying: caffeine can induce these changes and it has been shown that these changes are elevated in leukaemia patients,’ added Dr Cooke.Changes of this kind have been seen in the blood ... Dirty Energy in light bulb
2009-01-26 06:48:00 What is dirty electricity or electrical pollution?Electrical pollution refers to low frequency electromagnetic waves that have unwanted effects, such as badly shielded electric cables that induce disturbances in electrical devices nearby.Imagine turning on a light bulb and within 20 minutes you notice skin problems. The first concern is what may be coming off from the bulbs. Ultraviolet Radiation. Scientists say the bulbs, give off UV. Like the sun gives off. We know this because Health Canada - they're the people who make sure the products and drugs you use are safe - told us that in an email that "CFLs are not provided with a prismatic diffuser that filters ultraviolet radiation out. Therefore, there may be skin sensitivity issues, especially in people with certain skin diseases"Health Canada is currently testing the bulbs to see if, and how much, radiation it gives off. Future Doctors Could Sniff Out Cancer
2009-01-17 12:24:00 Skin cancer is on the rise in this country. The disease is currently diagnosed by taking a tissue sample of suspicious moles or lesions on the skin, which can be a slow & painful process. In cases where there are no outward signs of skin cancer, the disease can be difficult to detect, leading to a delayed or missed diagnosis.Doctors in the future could detect the most common form of cancer in US just by waving a wand-like scanner over patients, researchers claim."We're the first to identify & quantify the compounds involved in skin cancer odors," said researcher Michelle Gallagher, an analytical chemist at specialty materials company Rohm & Haas in Spring House, Pa.Recently, scientists found that dogs can actually be trained to sniff out skin tumors. This suggests the disease leads to changes within ill cells that release telltale chemicals. Medical tools that could detect these differences could give doctors a critical lead in fighting skin cancer."Knowledge of a link between odo... More About: Cancer , Future

Ford will release new supercar 2010 - Ford Shelby GT500
2009-01-02 10:33:00 Ford says its Special Vehicle Team (SVT) division carried over the gains made with the special edition Shelby GT500KR to the more widely produced Shelby model. The new GT500 also gains the GT500KR’s whopping 510 pound-feet of torque.Compare with the old GT500, this new supercar model gets more aggressive styling, particularly in the nose. The horizontally mirrored trapezoidal shape of the grille in the upper and lower front fascia is meant to echo the oval shape of the Shelby Cobras of the '60s. The upper grille is tilted forward at a steeper angle than the GT and the grille surround is separated entirely from the hood. The hood of the GT500 still has a functional air extractor allowing some of the massive heat generated by the blown V8 to escape. The engine for the new Shelby is still a twin cam 5.4L V8 with a supercharger. The updates bump output from from 500 hp at 6,000 rpm to 540 hp at 6,200 rpm. Twisting force also goes from 480 lb-ft at 4,500 rpm to 510 lb-ft at the same pe... More About: Ford , Supercar , Release

2008-12-13 10:36:00 Neil Bailey has a vision: to build the perfect modern sport car. The inspired design has become the Bailey Blade, a great-looking concept car design. The foam and computer modeling is done, now the car is taking shape for real. Originally, the car was to be a high-end, ultra-custom gasoline-powered speedster, but during development, Bailey started to realize the benefits of using different technologies. The Bailey Blade is being developed in three configurations: the XTR, EVR, and HDR.The XTR is a 750hp, 5.4L V8 with a 6-speed transmission and a top-notch motor from ROUSH. This was the original configuration of the Bailey Blade. The EVR is a hybrid with both front and rear hi-torque electric motors, giving 300×2 foot pounds of torque to each axle. This 4WD system will give 600fp of torque up to 3,000 rpms and utilize lithium-iron phosophate batteries. A small gas-powered, 100hp 30kw generator on-board will provide recharge for longer distances. The Blade HDR is the same ROUSH motor as ... More About: Sports , Performance , Style |
