Connect Your Apple iPhone with Two Computers

Add this to the still small but burgeoning group of useful, native iPhone applications. One frequently lamented iPhone omission is the inability to synchronize media with two separate computers, containing two separate iTunes libraries. If you already have iTunes media (music, video) synchronized from one computer, hooking the iPhone up to another computer will only give you the option to overwrite all existing media with what?s stored on that system. SwapTunes is a small binary that, when run, simply creates and switches to a new iTunes library on the iPhone itself. This new library can be synchronized with a different system. You can then run SwapTunes again to switch back and forth between the two libraries. The iPhone Alley team have been hard at work getting iFuntastic v.3 ready for release, and it?s finally gone live.  If you don?t already know, iFuntastic started off as a simple way to add custom ringtones to your iPhone, but has since evolved into a full file browsing, application installing, wallpaper managing hothouse of general cellular hackery.  Now they?ve added support for PowerPC-based Macs, there?s a new file browser, image editing and support for multiple home screens.   Interestingly, there?s also a way to ?unshackle? your iPhone, which is supposedly a more permanent form of Jailbreak, as well as an easy to use method to turn iTunes previews into ringtones. iPhone Alley?s site appears to be down for maintenance, but you can still access the v.3 upgrade from there or from Macenstein.  Thanks to MyiTablet

Another Huge Bill by Apple iPhone Owner

The bloom is off the Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) iPhone rose. Yes, the all-in-one wireless gadget has sold in huge quantities since its launch in late June, but when customers started receiving hundred-page bills, the fervor soured somewhat. The iPhone is one heckuva device, but it's not for everyone. It especially may not be for AT&T customer Herbert Kliegerman, who roamed in Mexico only to later realize that AT&T had hit him with a $2,000 bill. Ouch -- there's a mortgage payment down the tubes. Kliegerman is now suing, claiming that 'hidden' roaming fees are built into the plan he has with his iPhone, since the device is locked to the AT&T, Inc. (NYSE: T) network and can't be used with SIM cards from other wireless carriers in different countries (which is spelled out in AT&T's terms if you read them). First AIM-client for Apple iPhone

It was only the other day that we wrote about the early-beta of ApolloIM, an native instant messaging client for the iPhone, but the team behind it have already released a new version fixing one of the primary issues.  Previously, when you returned to the homescreen ApolloIM would close and lose the connection with the AIM server; now, as long as there?s a song playing (which is needed, apparently, to prevent the iPhone from going into low power mode), you can shuffle around to your hearts content secure in the knowledge that you?re still signed-in.   Next step, we?re told, is maybe making the dialogue display more aesthetically pleasing - perhaps with SMS threaded message style speech bubbles - as well as using LibPurple to access the Yahoo, MSN, Jabber and GTalk IM servers and make it a true multi-client program. Our sister blog Engadget is crazy about all things gadgety, which is why they covered the boatload of Nokia announcements today. Those announcements included the phone in the video above. Look a little familiar to anyone? Now, I'm not usually one to accuse companies of copying Apple , product development is a long process and different paths can lead to the same destination. That being said, when questioned during the press event about how this phone looks a little like the iPhone (i.e. exactly like it) Nokia's Exec VP said, "If there is something good in the world then we copy with pride." I should imagine that, as a third-party app programmer, the one thing worse than having your genitals hacked off by ninja badgers would be nobody using your software.  And unfortunately marketing and publicity requires very different brain muscles from those necessary for coding, so it?s not enough to assume that where one aptitude goes the other follows.  Thankfully, the guys behind Installer.app - probably the simplest way to load third-party software onto an iPhone, at least until AT&T and Apple start supporting it officially - have made an offer that helps everyone: send ?em your software and they?ll wrap it up in the Installer.app catalogue.   Obviously this isn?t purely an altruistic gesture, since the more choice you have with Installer.app the more likely people are to download and use it, but it?s undeniably A Useful Thing.  Up until now getting your software included in their app has involved a good deal of metaphorical red tape and fussing, which obviously takes away...

AIM client + Apple iPhone = ?

There?s no shortage of instant-messaging options billed as ideal for the iPhone, but up until now unless you?ve wanted to pay AT&T for an SMS message each way then you?ve been forced to use a web-based client.  It?s not ideal - there are limits on what notifications and the like they can give, and it?s hardly integrated with the rest of the handset - but beggars can?t, as the saying goes, be choosers.  Now, though, there?s a very early beta of the iPhone?s first native IM client, Apollo IM, to be excited about.  Early days indeed, but the signs are looking good.   Right now it only works with AIM accounts (so no Yahoo! or MSN IMing), there are no notifications and if you jump back to the homescreen it logs you off, but as a proof of concept it does what you want it to do: signs in, shows a contacts list and lets you send & receive messages.  Undoubtedly this will undergo massive fettling over the next week or so, especially since Apple and/or AT&T are so reticent in bri...

Add ESPN to your list of major media outlets who have designed a portal specifically for the iPhone. While they might have had an easier time customizing their PodCenter with podcasts and downloadable media for the iPhone (after all, they were already halfway there with a PodCenter), they win absolutely zero points for the URL you use to get there: http://sports.espn.go.com/espnradio/podca st/iphone/If you know of a better way, please sound off.As far as the iPhone-ified UI, ESPN did a pretty good job. Shows are listed descending by date, and tapping on a specific episode presents a logo, brief description and the ability to stream the episode. ESPN has also launched a few new shows for this rev to the PodCenter, though I can't get a single one to play yet. A site makes the claim that the iPhone's handling of Javascript is substantially slower than that of desktop systems, and even the code used in Apple 's native iPhone applications. Running a simple benchmark test of the iPhone versus a 1.83GHz, Intel Core Duo Mac, the iPhone is on average more than 80 times slower at Javascript functions, sometimes as much as 90 times. As further proof, a simple plotting app is said to provide a tangible end-user difference. Performance differences are said to be even more radical when, through hacking (see the iPhone Dev Wiki), a single piece of software is made to run on the iPhone (download) in versions for both Javascript and Apple's native codebase. Wouldn?t it be nice if we could just software unlock our iPhones to work on any carrier we wanted? While we?re eagerly awaiting a fully-unlocked, ?Holy Grail? solution from our favorite iPhone hackers, we?ll just have to make do with SIM unlocking hacks.
