Connect Your Apple iPhone with Two Computers
2007-09-02 15:05:00 Add this to the still small but burgeoning group of useful, native iPhone applications. One frequently lamented iPhone omission is the inability to synchronize media with two separate computers, containing two separate iTunes libraries. If you already have iTunes media (music, video) synchronized from one computer, hooking the iPhone up to another computer will only give you the option to overwrite all existing media with what?s stored on that system. SwapTunes is a small binary that, when run, simply creates and switches to a new iTunes library on the iPhone itself. This new library can be synchronized with a different system. You can then run SwapTunes again to switch back and forth between the two libraries. The process works like this: Sync your iPhone with the first system, acquiring the appropriate media Disconnect your iPhone Run the SwapTunes application (from your iPhone) Go check the iPod application on the iPhone, and notice that i... Hardware Unlock of Apple iPhone Really Works
2007-09-02 15:03:00 While widespread verification of claims made by iPhoneSimFree.com and others claiming to have successfully unlocked the iPhone via software has not yet materialized, users from around the world are reporting success with George Hotz? complex hardware-based unlocking process using various service providers. Users are also having success with an alternative unlock process that allegedly needs no soldering (using only a needle), but still requires that the iPhone be disassembled. Posts on the ?Hackintosh? forums include: A user from Winnipeg, on Rogers who writes ?Finally got my iPhone unlocked after two unsuccessful evenings of trying. It?s working 100% (less visual voicemail of course), pairs with my 07 Altima via Bluetooth, charges and plays through my Aux jack on the dock in my Altima. SMS, EDGE working. [?] The only thing that sucks is Rogers doesn?t have an unlimited data plan but at least the iPhone has a built in data monitor to tell you how much you?ve used since amazingl... Funtastic new version of iFuntastic released for Apple iPhone
2007-09-02 15:02:00 The iPhone Alley team have been hard at work getting iFuntastic v.3 ready for release, and it?s finally gone live. If you don?t already know, iFuntastic started off as a simple way to add custom ringtones to your iPhone, but has since evolved into a full file browsing, application installing, wallpaper managing hothouse of general cellular hackery. Now they?ve added support for PowerPC-based Macs, there?s a new file browser, image editing and support for multiple home screens. Interestingly, there?s also a way to ?unshackle? your iPhone, which is supposedly a more permanent form of Jailbreak, as well as an easy to use method to turn iTunes previews into ringtones. iPhone Alley?s site appears to be down for maintenance, but you can still access the v.3 upgrade from there or from Macenstein. Another Huge Bill by Apple iPhone Owner
2007-09-02 15:01:00 The bloom is off the Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) iPhone rose. Yes, the all-in-one wireless gadget has sold in huge quantities since its launch in late June, but when customers started receiving hundred-page bills, the fervor soured somewhat. The iPhone is one heckuva device, but it's not for everyone. It especially may not be for AT&T customer Herbert Kliegerman, who roamed in Mexico only to later realize that AT&T had hit him with a $2,000 bill. Ouch -- there's a mortgage payment down the tubes. Kliegerman is now suing, claiming that 'hidden' roaming fees are built into the plan he has with his iPhone, since the device is locked to the AT&T, Inc. (NYSE: T) network and can't be used with SIM cards from other wireless carriers in different countries (which is spelled out in AT&T's terms if you read them). I'm not sure this suit has any legs, but it's neat to see what customers will dredge up for lawsuits these days regardless.Kliegerman states in his suit that AT&... First AIM-client for Apple iPhone
2007-09-02 14:59:00 It was only the other day that we wrote about the early-beta of ApolloIM, an native instant messaging client for the iPhone, but the team behind it have already released a new version fixing one of the primary issues. Previously, when you returned to the homescreen ApolloIM would close and lose the connection with the AIM server; now, as long as there?s a song playing (which is needed, apparently, to prevent the iPhone from going into low power mode), you can shuffle around to your hearts content secure in the knowledge that you?re still signed-in. Next step, we?re told, is maybe making the dialogue display more aesthetically pleasing - perhaps with SMS threaded message style speech bubbles - as well as using LibPurple to access the Yahoo, MSN, Jabber and GTalk IM servers and make it a true multi-client program. The team have recently been given $300 by a generous donor, which just goes to show that the power to affect iPhone software development really is in the hands of the us... Apple iPhone Nokia's Style
2007-09-02 14:58:00 Our sister blog Engadget is crazy about all things gadgety, which is why they covered the boatload of Nokia announcements today. Those announcements included the phone in the video above. Look a little familiar to anyone? Now, I'm not usually one to accuse companies of copying Apple , product development is a long process and different paths can lead to the same destination. That being said, when questioned during the press event about how this phone looks a little like the iPhone (i.e. exactly like it) Nokia's Exec VP said, "If there is something good in the world then we copy with pride." At least they are honest. This phone should be available sometime next year, unless Apple Legal stops it. Thanks to Tuaw More About: Iphone , Style , Apple iphone
3rd-party software + Apple iPhone = Forever Together
2007-08-28 20:03:00 I should imagine that, as a third-party app programmer, the one thing worse than having your genitals hacked off by ninja badgers would be nobody using your software. And unfortunately marketing and publicity requires very different brain muscles from those necessary for coding, so it?s not enough to assume that where one aptitude goes the other follows. Thankfully, the guys behind Installer.app - probably the simplest way to load third-party software onto an iPhone, at least until AT&T and Apple start supporting it officially - have made an offer that helps everyone: send ?em your software and they?ll wrap it up in the Installer.app catalogue. Obviously this isn?t purely an altruistic gesture, since the more choice you have with Installer.app the more likely people are to download and use it, but it?s undeniably A Useful Thing. Up until now getting your software included in their app has involved a good deal of metaphorical red tape and fussing, which obviously takes away... More About: Software , Party , Iphone , Forever
AIM client + Apple iPhone = ?
2007-08-28 19:57:00 There?s no shortage of instant-messaging options billed as ideal for the iPhone, but up until now unless you?ve wanted to pay AT&T for an SMS message each way then you?ve been forced to use a web-based client. It?s not ideal - there are limits on what notifications and the like they can give, and it?s hardly integrated with the rest of the handset - but beggars can?t, as the saying goes, be choosers. Now, though, there?s a very early beta of the iPhone?s first native IM client, Apollo IM, to be excited about. Early days indeed, but the signs are looking good. Right now it only works with AIM accounts (so no Yahoo! or MSN IMing), there are no notifications and if you jump back to the homescreen it logs you off, but as a proof of concept it does what you want it to do: signs in, shows a contacts list and lets you send & receive messages. Undoubtedly this will undergo massive fettling over the next week or so, especially since Apple and/or AT&T are so reticent in bri... More About: Iphone , Apple iphone , Client
Tough Hardware Unlock of Apple iPhone
2007-08-28 19:56:00 Now that the AT&T legal monkeys have set their sights on software unlocking methods, you may be thinking the hardware alternative is a more tempting one. If that?s the case, then this Flickr gallery documenting the stages of the process might make your own attempt more straightforward; after all, there?s no such thing as too much preparation when the potential outcome is a bricked iPhone! I still think you?d need to be a very, very brave person to try it yourself, but there are undoubtedly people who?ll give it a go. As ever, should you do it - successfully or not! - do let us know in the comments. Thanks to MyiTablet.com More About: Hardware , Apple , Iphone , Apple iphone , Tough
Apple iPhone isn't best in its class
2007-08-28 19:51:00 Filed under: Telecom Best of the blogs: Even though the iPhone has been, albeit not easily, unshackled from AT&T Wireless Service, Tom Yager says it's still a waste of money. "Following an exhaustive comparison of alternatives, I have overwhelming backing for my early conclusion that iPhone is vastly outmatched by several devices in its price class," he writes in this Enterprise Mac post. Yager's ultimate advice: Buy a real phone. From the feature well: Phrases such as "your boss is watching" and "you are your own worst enemy" naturally invoke those internal fear-raddled voices in most of us. "There are plenty of reasons to be, well, a little paranoid about the vulnerability of your data and the potential loss of your privacy," asserts Dan Tynan in 10 reasons to be paranoid. Data privacy, while the latest and not-so-greatest concern these days, is hardly the only one of significance. Related: When it pays to be paranoid. Careers: In the ... iPhone Ringtone and Application Installation with iBrickr
2007-08-23 21:39:00 Don't let the name of iPhone hacker NateTrue's latest offering scare you away. Though you might think so from the name of it, "iBrickr" isn't designed to "brick" your iPhone. Instead, iBrickr is designed to provide easy-to-use, GUI-driven management of ringtones and third party applications for the iPhone. Of course, like all unauthorized iPhone software/hacks, there is some risk of having to restore or repair your iPhone. It's wise to understand the risks of modifying your iPhone before embarking on the task. That said, for too long (yes, 1month is too long) the Mac faithful have had all kinds of cool tools - like iFuntastic and Installer.app - that make iPhone modding easy. On the other side of the aisle, the Windows folks have been left with iPhoneInterface or iPHUC and lots of command line hacking. Thanks to natetrue, Windows users now have a way to customize their iPhone that is, according to iBrickr's creator, "dead simple." iBrickr offers ad... ESPN creates Apple iPhone News Page
2007-08-23 21:35:00 Add ESPN to your list of major media outlets who have designed a portal specifically for the iPhone. While they might have had an easier time customizing their PodCenter with podcasts and downloadable media for the iPhone (after all, they were already halfway there with a PodCenter), they win absolutely zero points for the URL you use to get there: http://sports.espn.go.com/espnradio/podca st/iphone/If you know of a better way, please sound off.As far as the iPhone-ified UI, ESPN did a pretty good job. Shows are listed descending by date, and tapping on a specific episode presents a logo, brief description and the ability to stream the episode. ESPN has also launched a few new shows for this rev to the PodCenter, though I can't get a single one to play yet. For now, I'll chalk that up to growing pains, since this iPhone UI more or less just launched today. Big thanks Tuaw More About: News , Apple , Iphone , Page , Apple iphone

Released BlueAnt z9 Bluetooth Headset for Your Apple iPhone
2007-08-18 20:07:00 It?s rare that you can make such a sweeping statement as this, but the BlueAnt z9 Bluetooth Headset is the new gold standard for all future Bluetooth headsets - hands down. It earns a 4.9 out of 5. I?m not the only one that thinks the z9 deserves the highest award possible, because it was the winner of a CES 2007 Innovations Design and Engineering Award! Combining superior sound quality for both sides of the call, ease of use, high levels of comfort for all-day wear and a sleek design, the z9 might very well be the last Bluetooth headset you?ll need to buy (until, that is, BlueAnt releases a new version). I tested the z9 with the iPhone on AT&T?s network and the Blackberry 8830 World Edition from Sprint. Pairing is simple and painless, with the z9 maintaining up to 3 connections with Bluetooth compatible devices ranging from mobile phones to your laptop or PC. You?ll need to jot down or remember the first, second and third device that was paired with the z9. Why? Because when y... More About: Apple , Iphone , Bluetooth Headset
How to free some space in Your Apple iPhone
2007-08-18 19:56:00 We recently received an email from iPhone Atlas reader Larry who wrote: ?How much memory should someone leave free on the iPhone for it to function properly? [?] In my case, I added a movie to my iPhone leaving 600 mb left on an 8 gb iPhone. While the iPhone worked properly, I started noticing behavior such as the home screen stuttering when returning to it (pressing the home button, the iPhone started returning to the home screen, stopped, then again went through the animation of widgets returning to the screen). I deleted the movie and this behavior stopped. Perhaps that?s a coincidence, but I took it as an indication that I was approaching the limit of how much I could put on my iPhone without affecting it.? It?s no coincidence, Larry. As we noted in mid-July, it appears that, like its desktop relative Mac OS X, the iPhone?s OS X operating system needs some head-room on the internal flash memory in order to operate properly. iPhones filled to the brim with data can exhibit ... Apple iPhone doesn't like Javascript
2007-08-18 19:55:00 A site makes the claim that the iPhone's handling of Javascript is substantially slower than that of desktop systems, and even the code used in Apple 's native iPhone applications. Running a simple benchmark test of the iPhone versus a 1.83GHz, Intel Core Duo Mac, the iPhone is on average more than 80 times slower at Javascript functions, sometimes as much as 90 times. As further proof, a simple plotting app is said to provide a tangible end-user difference. Performance differences are said to be even more radical when, through hacking (see the iPhone Dev Wiki), a single piece of software is made to run on the iPhone (download) in versions for both Javascript and Apple's native codebase. While some basic functions can be only seven to nine times faster in native code, this shoots up to over 100 times faster with divisions, and a dramatic 226 times faster when it comes to function calls. The site's author uses these figures as a plea to Apple, asking the company to deliver a "... More About: Iphone , Apple iphone
Vodafone will present Apple iPhone in Europe
2007-08-18 19:53:00 Apple and Vodafone are in the final stages of negotiating a deal to provide the iPhone in Europe , says an anonymous but reportedly well-informed source. The two companies are claimed to be ready to introduce their deal within the next two weeks but still have software bugs and other technical details to address before the cellphone can be introduced to the public. The formal introduction may take place significantly in advance of actual shipments, according to the report, though the purported insider would not say when the phone would be in stores or whether pricing had been established. At least some of the issues relate to the iPhone's software support for not just Vodafone but also other European carriers and Apple's initial partner AT&T, the source indicates. Vodafone in particular would like Apple to refine significant portions of its interface beyond what shipped with the device in June. The international carrier would like Apple to code its YouTube suite to more closely... More About: Apple , Iphone , Present
Audi loves Apple, Apple loves Audi Too
2007-08-16 20:22:00 With both Audi and Apple 's minimalist design ethos, it was simply a matter of time before they joined forces and offered a way to integrate the new iPhone across the four-ringed lineup. Any Audi model equipped with Bluetooth will allow the iPhone to be paired with the vehicle, giving users the ability to make and receive hands-free phone calls, as well as providing a signal strength indicator, assigning specific names to numbers (Work, Home, etc.) and allowing access to call lists. On the music front, the addition of the Audi Music Interface will give the vehicles MMI system direct control of all the iPod capabilities of the iPhone, allowing users to navigate everything from playlists to albums. The AMI is available as an optional extra on the A5, A6, A8 and Q7, although we'd expect the full line of Audi vehicles to allow integration sooner rather than later.[Source: Audi]PRESS RELEASEAudi and the iPhone ? high technology in a perfect design. GoogleVideo on Your Apple iPhone
2007-08-16 20:20:00 Yeah, we know?YouTube practically is Googl e Video. Nevertheless, choices are choices and, given Google?s focus on YouTube content filtering, a persistent person just might be able to find some goodies in the Google Video matrix that wouldn?t last 30 seconds on YouTube. Previously limited to the built-in YouTube client for online video content, an ingenious soul has figured out how to play Google Video content on the iPhone. This complicated hack involves tapping the "Download for Video iPod" link next to a video and?well, that?s about it. The video is somehow cached onto your handheld, and the moving pictures show up on your iPhone media player. ?Nuff said. Keep in mind that you?ll need a high bandwidth connection, i.e. Wi-Fi, and that as of right now it?s unclear as to whether the video files are stored somewhere within the iPhone?s file system. That said, this little "trick" should work for just about nay downloadable iPod-formatted video content you may come a... More About: Apple , Iphone , Apple iphone , Googlevideo
Second successfull unlocking of Apple iPhone
2007-08-16 20:18:00 Wouldn?t it be nice if we could just software unlock our iPhones to work on any carrier we wanted? While we?re eagerly awaiting a fully-unlocked, ?Holy Grail? solution from our favorite iPhone hackers, we?ll just have to make do with SIM unlocking hacks. The SuperSIM hack that we covered previously will definitely get you up and running on a non-AT&T network, but that particular workaround only worked on V1 SIM cards and required a separate SIM reader/writer. The newest, and arguably easier, SIM hack comes to us from simbunch and uses the Bladox Turbo SIM. This TurboSIM hack does away with the SIM reader/writer in favor of using just the iPhone. Grab yourself TurboSIM from Bladox (they?re understandably back-ordered right now, so you?ll have to wait in line) and follow these instructions (from simbunch): Jailbreak (link applicable for Windows users) SSH enabled (link applicable for Windows users) iPhone activated using your own AT&T SIM?s token (DVD Jon?s Phone... Apple iPhone users receive Huge Bills, but They still love it
2007-08-16 20:16:00 USA Today reported that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) iPhone Users Shocked by Huge Bills, but the story is not the headline. The cost of the iPhone is high, both in its initial purchase and its monthly cost, but it is by no means shocking anyone. Most iPhone users love them. The only shocking thing is the lengthy, very detailed statements that on occasion run 50 pages or more! In relation to customer expectations, it is the physical bill that is HUGE, not the cost. This will work itself out eventually. As is often the case, today's news, is tomorrow's bird cage liner. My 18-year-old daughter still thinks the iPhone is the coolest, and she's very happy after pounding on it frequently over the past six weeks. She has also just returned from England (yes, dad spoils her), where she found it worked just fine and was able to call home with no trouble. The iPhone is not for everyone. Meebo has released Improved IM chat for Apple iPhone
2007-08-16 20:12:00 Your Meebo buddy list is now finger friendly, and easy on the eyes. This morning Meebo is releasing a freshly updated version of their chat app for the iPhone. The new iteration is more finger friendly, and requires none of the pinching, or chat window management of the previous version, which was admittedly a quick fix to accommodate early adopters of Apple 's handset. Gone is the classic desktop feel of Meebo, which has been replaced by a simple buddy list that takes up the entire screen, and can be perused with one finger. To begin a chat, you simply need to click on somebody's name. It's very intuitive. With this latest version, Meebo has done something really cool by pulling up the last few lines of your last conversation, assuming you were using Meebo as your client. Likewise, your saved Meebo away messages are there, along with a spiffy new status changer that lets you choose them from a wheel. All in all the update is a nice addition to the lineup of IM apps for the iPhon... More About: Chat , Iphone , Released
