Billboard featuring facial recognition software…
2008-06-05 06:19:00 Billboards with facial recognition software just dripping of awesome yet scariness. There’s been rumors of “smart billboards” coming for a while now originally it was just an idea of combining cameras with billboards to record who was looking at them. But it’s as I said getting a bit more advanced with several advertisers also adding in facial recognition software to record other things besides the pictures but also important information such as age and gender and while they don’t mention it most likely race as well and other factors. Quividi has supplied camera equipped ads to McDonald’s in Singapore and Ikea in Europe but the technology is now moving toward coming the US now. It’s already begun deployment in New York for the A&E show “The Andromeda Strain” mini-series as well as in Philadelphia in train station based ads for Philadelphia Soul. But that’s just the beginning with a company named TruMedia deploying similar technology to about 30 locations t... More About: Software , Recognition , Facial , Billboard , Featuring
Holy crap big brother was watching, and tracking 100,000 people!
2008-06-05 05:50:00 You know while girls around the world worry about the small stuff like mineral makeup and geeks worry about net neutrality. It might be the privacy paranoid advocates getting what they were thinking. You see in an “industrialized nation” ya that's all their giving us no specifics. A group of researchers secretly tracked the location of 100,000 people to determine the pattern of their movements. The 100,000 people were chosen at random from a lot of 6 million wireless subscribers in the mysterious country. Now the US is an industrialized country, but as far as i know something like this is considered breaking our privacy rights and completely illegal. I mean where ever this took place through the use of cell tower triangulation and other “tracking devices” on the bright side the studies author says that it didn’t betray the users privacy because the study did not know the peoples identity or their phone numbers, in essence they were just blips moving on a screen. Foxconn micro projector PD-W1001 DLP impresses, kind of.
2008-06-05 05:03:00 Computex has really been an interesting time for the gadget geeks in all of us. Mainly because of the dozens of netbooks the manufacturers have brought forward to get us geeks to drool. But laptops aren’t the only tiny toys slipping into Computex that came in tiny packages and impressed in a big way. The latest of these “Pico projectors” as their known is from Foxconn (yah the guys known for some pretty decent motherboards) the PD-W1001 features a 0.3-inch Texas Instruments DLP chip as well as WVGA (854 x 480) resolution not to mention a miniscule 25 lumen output. Best of all it comes in the tiny package you see above measuring it at a miniscule 55x46x26 millimeter package and only 65 grams. Now had it not been for the miniscule resolution and lumen count this might have been more than just another pretty toy, maybe if they could crank it up to a solid 100Lm and 720p I’d be truly interested. For now it’s pretty much only really helpful for work presentations. Source:... More About: Micro , Projector
NVIDIA's Tegra makes you say... HOLY CRAP
2008-06-04 05:51:00 You guys might recall the uber sexy 3d accelerated mobile system that NVIDIA had coming and their were rumors of it running even Quake 3 on a PC somewhere between the size of a PDA and a NetTop. But it gets better the fact it plays Quake is only the beginning with it also boasting miniscule energy needs as well as HDMI output, and a fancy 3d interface just to top things off all hardware accelerated. I mean we're talking a handheld device that's able to playback HighDef video with the full output to HDMI TVs for 30 hours on battery! Quake 3 playing at 35fps and a well for lack of a better way of saying it BAD ASS interface this little device puts just about every other mobile platform I've seen to shame, from Windows based devices, to even the iPhone. I really doubt that when it ever does come to becoming a consumer product and actually buying it it will be a lot more than you pay for child insurance and probably more than most nettop's as well, but theirs always hope that the... Intel's Z-P230... a droplet of SSD goodness for netbooks
2008-06-04 05:23:00 Intel's got some pretty sexy and expensive SSD drives you know those oh so awesome instant access hard drives with near instant seek times. It's always quite expensive for everything from 40-250gb versions. This limits them to pretty much only uber notebooks and the best of the best desktops that speed freaks demand. Well intel's targeting a smaller subset of machines at a MUCH lower price bracket. Namely the NetTop market those tiny 300-400$ laptops that are all the fad these days. How will they target these small PC's that don't even have full sized hard drives to begin with? Well the plan is for 3 models of SSD drives but in much smaller sizes 4gb and 8gb to start with as well as an eventual 16gb model to follow later this year in Q4. The drives are tiny, 1/4th the size of the already small 1.8" hard drives and will have the standard SSD goodness of access and seek times as well as the low power usage which will provide a nice power longevity boost to the nettops tha... Online casinos that allows US players, uh say what?
2008-06-02 04:56:00 Ok one of the things I've found extremely annoying lately since I started gaming online is the fact that since my accounts are mostly US based it's nearly impossible to fund the Online casinos with funds. As their is that huge ban on online gambling in the US even though I'm technically in the US and most of the Casinos online today aren't based in the US either just the sheer fact of having the cash in the US makes it a problem to deal with. The fact that traditionally USA players are frowned upon at most casinos it's a bit odd to see a site like US Players Welcome that was actually advertising USA online casinos. Ya theirs still restrictions when it comes to the specific states but it's an interesting bit of news for me since my accounts are in a state that is allowed according to the site. Anyway's I'll keep this short the fact is it's a interesting bit of news for the online gamblers that are from the US... the only time it really sucks to be from the US actually lol.
Projection Design's F10 AS3D active 3d projector releasing
2008-06-01 05:34:00 Say hello to something so awesome you'll probably drool in geek envy at just the thought of it existing. This is the active 3D stereoscopic projector from projectiondesign. The F10 is readying to be released and while this isn't the first to hit the market, as 8 of it's breathren the F20 sx+ Projector s are currently in use in Munich University for 3D visualization systems the F10 brings a host of features and god knows maybe something at least the semi-rich can afford. The new F10 is being set to debut at InfoComm 2008 in Las Vegas and while this one will most likely be cheaper than it's F20 breathren it's big daddy that's planned down the road the three-chip DLP F80 which is slated to feature some astonishing specs even for a standard projector with full WUXGA (1920 x 1200) resolution, Advanced Color Optical Processing (ACOP) and most definitely a price that will make even rich people cringe. But then again we never expected the first 3d stereoscopic projectors to be cheap... More About: Active , Projection
Graphene set to replace/supplement carbon nanotubes
2008-05-29 05:45:00 In the world of high tech composites and materials carbon nanotubes are the chromed out Cadillac grills of the composite pimp mobile. They do everything from being ultra light to having applications in lubricants. In fact theirs pretty much nothing that carbon nanotube's haven't been seen to be possible to have a great impact on. But the problem is that Carbon Nanotubes are starting to be a possible health problem linked to asbestos like symptoms that affect peoples lungs do the fact the microscopic nanotubes could lodge in peoples lungs causing respiratory problems and other issues like it. Not to mention the fact that carbon nanotubes cost several hundred dollars for a single gram of Carbon Nanotubes. Well it looks like there might be a new kid on the block when it comes to compounds, Graphene based polymer hybrids. The newest Graphene hybrid is developed by Northwestern University and it's biggest draw besides it having most of the benefits of carbon nanotubes, is the fa... More About: Supplement
The honeymoon hunt returns
2008-05-29 05:24:00 Well it's T-Minus 2 months (ok 2 days less than that) but the fact is we're getting really close to the marriage. Ya for new visitors I'm getting married to my high school girlfriend in July and I've been hunting for a vacation spot for our honeymoon and only recently came across Hilton Head rental group. It's got some of the best prices I've seen so far for as nice of the locations are one of the rooms is in the picture to the left that I've been looking at. What's even better is that at ~700$ for a week it's actually about 400-500$ cheaper than the places I was looking at this past month. I'm still trying to decide between a apartment style rental like the ones from HHI or something more pampered like a nice all-inclusive hotel stay. But the problem I'm running into is the balance, All-Inclusive even here locally is 300-400$ a night. So that drastically shortens our ability to stay to like maybe 2-3 nights. So it's between being pampered and everything for 2-3 days o... More About: Honeymoon , Hunt
Screw massage cushion's this one air conditions your A$$.
2008-05-29 05:08:00 Ok I've heard of Kuchofuku before, the guys that brought us the original air-conditioned shirts. Something someone like me that hates heat would love to have if it didn't make me look bloated. Well they've gone and come out with something I'd actually considering buying for my office. This time in the ass cooling variation for office chairs. Best yet it's not an entire new chair but a cushion designed to pump air up through the seat to cool your butt off. It moves a pretty good bit of air at 170 liters of air per minute. It's pretty energy efficient as well pumping out air for 8 hours every day for only 5 cents a month. So you can sit their drinking your Redbull or Orovo in blissful glee as your butt remains cool. Then again while this is a great little add-on for an office chair, it is definitely not the first but their hasn't ever been a butt-off competition between the pads. I hope its blowing the air backwards because if it's just blowing upward, I'd hate to be the o... More About: Massage , Screw , Conditions
The Eco-Friendly bomb for the global warming concerned rogue nations
2008-05-29 04:56:00 Ok this is one of those breakthroughs that just seems to be stretching the lines of what's considered "useful". Not to mention that the fact that scientists have developed an... eco-friendly bomb seems to be the biggest oxymoron to ever be uttered by a human's existence. In fact thanks to the University of Munich and their development of this new bomb based on 2 compounds known as HBT and G2ZT, the only thing that will remain in it's aftermath is ammonia. Now personally I say if their going to cover the area they've just leveled with a mist of ammonia as the bomb's only aftermath, then at least add some lemon scented essence to it that way it's not only terrorist-free and bacteria-free but also smells nice and fresh as well. As I said this breakthrough seems as big a deal as the guys who invented all natural acne treatments because they figured the standard stuff just wasn't good enough. But I mean come on when do inventions and breakthroughs just become stupi... More About: Global Warming , Concerned , Global , Nations , Friendly
The Cassette Watch... what the hell!?!
2008-05-29 04:47:00 Well you know it's not as sexy as some amazing looking watches like the Parmigiani watches or Rolex it sure does have an odd yet exciting spot in our hearts for vintage goodness. While the Cassette Watch isn't exactly what it sounds like, it isn't made of a miniature cassette nor is it a cassette player on your wrist. What it is in fact, is a pretty cool looking watch who's face is actually 2 small dials one for hours and one for minutes to simulate the appearance of it being a miniature cassette. What might be even more entertaining is the hand sketched labels for the HR and MN for hours and minutes above each dial that really gives you a flash back to the yonder years when cassettes were cool. The price comes in at $70 which isn't bad considering its constructed of stainless steal (though I'm a titanium watch guy after my last piece of crap). Source: Gizmodo More About: Hell
NVIDIA's not just a video company anymore
2008-05-27 05:14:00 Well in a step away from just making video card NVIDIA's planning a lot, such as there Tegra APX 2500 that has already been shown running Quake quite impressively. The Tegra was only the beginning to a line of high performance embedded CPU's that NVidia plans to bring to market. The upcoming CSX 600/650 are set to debut at the 700-800MHz range and will be capable of utilizing some of NVidia's expertise in the video marketplace pushing out full 1080p video at 24fps liquidy smooth. Now all we need is embedded ultra small and ultra thin OLED's or LCD's that are cheap and actually capable of 1080p video. I mean can you imagine a Windows Mobile 7/8 phone capable of 1080p video at 24fps, maybe an ultra sharp screen along with micro-1080p projector. But hey thats just me dreaming the fact of the matter is the Video -centric embedded CPU's are on the way and Nvidia is getting ready to break into the market. God knows when though, but the future is looking pretty great. Source: Eng... More About: Company
Embedded RF and WIFI Solutions
2008-05-27 04:58:00 As many of you know I'm a WIFI technician for an ISP down here in the Caribbean. One of my jobs is to locate and assess new companies and products for our system to look into using in the future. Beyond just embedded chips we also look for RF Design Services for some of our forward network planning and multi dwelling locations that we roll services out to. Vanteon is one of the companies that we're looking into for possibly using Bandpass Filter devices for our system in the future depending on the expansion we're planning for the large scale network. For some of you tech and military junkies they might sound familiar, primarily because they develop the DO-178B / DO-254, which are some top of the line Navigational and Imaging systems used in things like jet fighters for the military and advanced research and development companies. Also theirs the possibility the name is familiar because it sounds a lot like another major military contractor by the name of Raytheon, but they de... More About: Wifi , Solutions , Embedded
EeePC mod adds keyboard backlight, the only thing it isn't is fiberoptic.
2008-05-17 05:05:00 The EeePC was never meant to be the sexiest of laptops. I mean lets face it and the other OLPC style laptops are designed to keep costs down not to look good, even though some of them look pretty good. Imagine however that you could do something in 2-3 hours with $13.50 that gives the Eee a sexual flair while at the same time being as useless as using Botox for migraines but then again what's technology without a touch of useless flair. It's definitely not the easiest of mods done but that can sort of be expected considering we're modding a laptop and in most cases even doing simple things like adding some ram to a laptops is insanely difficult on some, and the smaller they are the harder they are to deal with. But in the end it might just be worth it because the tiny little keyboard would have a sexy glowing back light, it just requires... removing the keyboard, slipping some wires, and doing the soldering for the light. Umm ya theirs some screws and reassembly as well but ... More About: Keyboard , Thing
Listerine... Mosquitoes, even MacGuyver would be proud!
2008-05-15 06:08:00 Ok this is something that I just read and had to post about because its something so simple yet amazing that it needs to be discussed. The guys over at Keelynet posted about an article at BreitBart about using Listerine as a one stop Mosquito repellant/killer/healer. You see they discovered that if you get some medicinal type Listerine (yes the mouth wash), the regular Dollar Store no name brand type works as well, perhaps not as good but it works. The article writer says that he was at a party getting eaten alive by mosquitoes when a man sprayed the lawn and deck with Listerine in a mist, and all of the mosquitos vanished. In fact they go on with saying that spraying it around doors and windows keeps the mosquitoes out and will even kill the mosquitoes on contact. But then again most liquids will since well... their normally pretty small. Considering the low cost of Listerine ($1.50-$2.00 for a giant bottle) using it seems to be a pretty easy and cheap way to deter some mosquito... More About: Proud , Mosquitoes
LG Develops World's Largest Elliptical and Circular Shaped LCDs
2008-05-15 05:51:00 Ok we've seen round LCD's before, but as you should know by now most LCD's are pretty much always square or rectangular. Well LG is claiming the largest Elliptical and Circular LCDs. The new LCDs come in at a very awesome 6 inch elliptical and 1.4 inch circular shaped LCDs are currently the largest being made in the world in production quality. Theirs no telling how long it'll be until we start using these babies to surf the web and pay their car insurance online or you know other... techie things you'd love to do on a watch or small round device ... that's previously been un-LCD-able without going ugly and square. Ok this isn't OLED or EINK, but hey LCD is tried and true and it works and is relatively cheap right now, so the fact that LG is saying the new panels can do 262,000 colors and 160 degree viewing means maybe ... just maybe, we'll see instrument panels, watches, phones all coming with odd shaped LCD's instead of just the stock square panels we're all used to. ... Dish Network wants to go Mobile
2008-05-15 05:30:00 Want to hear something funny? Dish Network the massive wireless distributor of television needs anywhere between 500 million and close to 2 billion dollars to support the mobile (wireless) TV that they plan to deploy. You see Dish network owns a chunk of that fabled uber geektastic 700mhz spectrum that went up for sale a while back. The only issue now is finding a friend to make the party happen. But then again Carl Voge the Dish Network vice chairman says it's a long long way from deciding who it's partners in bringing mobile television to every john doe running on a treadmill or hopping a bus in the US. In fact he even said they were a "long" time from even planning to build out the system, the real question I suppose is how "long", long really is, considering the fact that many wireless carriers will probably be able to support similar content delivery over their advanced 3G and upcoming inevitable 4G networks. Sharp rolls out 46" and 52" LCD TV's... with... a web bro
2008-05-14 05:53:00 Ok sometimes hardware gets released that I really don't see coming, that pretty much sums up the release from Sharp today of 2 new TV's both with impressive specs but that come with a feature that I find quite... well, surprising to say the least. The 2 new models are the 46" TL-M4600 and the 52" you guessed it TL-M5200 (how original). Both models will sport basically the same panel specs coming in at full 1920x1080 resolution along with "sub-6ms" response time, no idea why they can't nail down the exact figure. As well as a whole lot of ports ranging from DVI-D to HDCP capable HDMI. The only difference beyond the size between the 2 models will be the smaller panel sporting 1,500:1 contrast ratio and the larger models 2,000:1 ratio, not a giant difference in reality. But here's where the interesting tidbit comes into play, the TV's will come with LAN Connectivity complete with a built-in web browser. Now no one has said what kind of browser and if we're ...
MSI Wind gets officially priced ... $399 hell ya!
2008-05-14 05:43:00 It seems the battle is on for the ultra-cheap ultra-small laptops, with The EeePC reining pretty much supreme currently, it looks like the boys at MSI are getting ready to pull out all the stops with them unveiling both the pricing and availability of the MSI Wind . From what I'm aware it will be the first ATOM based ultra portable to hit the US. The great news is it's trip overseas to the US has seen it's price also drop a bit and is starting to look like something i might actually consider picking up pending the benchmarks. $399 that's the price point the MSI Wind will be debuting for starting on June 3rd. The Linux (SuSE) version will feature 1.6GHz Intel Atom, 512mb Ram, 80gb Hard Drive and a 3 cell battery for 2.5 hours of use at the $399 price point. Super Powerful mini wind turbines light up the world, eventually
2008-05-14 05:35:00 Doug Selsam is a name that might not sound like someone you've heard of before but it gets a bit more interesting when you find out that this name might become a bit of a household name if his latest invention has anything to do with it. You see Doug has developed something that stands to amaze a lot of people, as you can see standing holding his prototype wind generator that consists of several micro 14 inch rotors that can produce 200 watts in 20mph of wind is an astonishing feat. The super light and extremely stable system's secret is the fact that the rotors are custom designed and made of high strength carbon fiber that allow all of the rotors to be hooked up and to function as one. The small 13 mini rotor system is apparently so powerful that it can produce enough juice to blow out a bank of car headlights like flashbulb lighting fixtures. Quite an impressive feat for such a small system that is so well balanced that a guy could hold it up in wind with one hand. The sad p... More About: World , Wind , Super , Mini , The World
MCE introduces a 1TB upgrade for the Macbook Pro
2008-05-14 05:17:00 Well MCE is a company that is in no way new to the aftermarket Mac line of products. The company however has a new trick that it's pulling out of it's proverbial hat, this time for the 17-inch Macbook Pro. The owners of the beloved large screen Macbook Pro 's can now also sport some major storage space in the shape of a new kit that comes with 2x500gb Drives one designed to replace the Macbook's stock optical drive with one of the 2.5 inch hard drives. The other 500gb drive is designed to replace the hard drive that's currently built-in to the Macbook itself bringing the total storage space to 1TB internal. In a bit of a bonus they also throw in 2 external cases one for the original hard drive and the other is for the optical drive so that none of the hardware goes without usage. Both of which happily plug into the two USB 2.0 ports for the Macbook. The only sad part is that the drive kit takes about as much money as a used Rolex to get a hold of weighing in at a whopping $800...
Sanyo's LP-XC55 and LP-XC50 projectors fitted with Active Maintenance Filte
2008-05-13 16:19:00 Sanyo is unveiling a new duo of projectors the XC55 and XC50. Both projectors boast white clothes and a wicked loud 7 watt internal speaker, just don't plan on pounding any big time parties, 1024 x 768 resolution as well as a security bar enabling extra thick cabling to hold it in place. But the specific cool feature is the Active Maintenance Filter system for easy maintenance that the new projectors come with. Now while this isn't a new advancement in low vision aids for people with projectors it is a nice feature for a projector that enables the filter to last longer between changes and "automatically senses when airflow is obstructed by dust, and advances the cartridge to the new filter". The one notable difference between the two is the 3,100 lumens in the XC55 and the 2,600 lumens that the XC50 are sporting which are probably the best vision aids for those that have issues seeing the screen :). Which are then accompanies by a bit of a price difference of $3,529 vs... More About: Projectors
25 year old unix bug fixed
2008-05-13 15:38:00 It's kind of amazing a 25 year old bug has remained burried in the bowls of the Unix code hiding and lurking. That's a very long time for a single piece of code to make it without getting overwritten or fixed. Marc Balmer an OpenBSD developer was the one that closed the book on the 25 year old flaw that was affecting BSD file systems. Because it was a file system related but it could have been triggered by anything from a rogue budgeting software to a file share. Well apparently the ancient bug was uncovered recently when an OpenBSD uesr emailed him about SAMBA crashing. After hearing of the problem he traced it back to a workaround that was used in SAMBA to make it function correctly on BSD systems, which he then traced back to a flaw that had existed since August of 1983 (wow i was born a few months after this error was introduced). The bug itself exists in every single system since then based on Unix, even Mac OSX is affected. The code itself was a very trivial fix, which ma... More About: Year , Fixed
What men will pay for a bit of plastic and metal, and bigger junk ;)
2008-05-03 19:57:00 Ok I've avoided writing about penis enlargement gadgets in the past because well it's just an odd subject. I mean me personally I'm happy with my stuff, though I've always wondered how much truth their is to the whole pop on a piece of plastic and metal and in a few months you've grown inches. The funny part is that the male enhancement gadgets are a lot like another male improvement product, hair restoration. Your probably wondering how penis enlargement and hair restoration go together, well besides them both being targeted towards men their enhancement products both tend to take multiple months to make any difference. Beyond that it also has the unfortunate side effect of being one of those items that people aren't 100% sure works. Some people use it for months and see that it works fine, but others see it not making a difference after 3 weeks and drop off. Personally I've been using Kirkland's hair treatment for over 2 months and while I haven't seen a "drastic" ch... More About: Metal , Plastic , Junk

An iPhone clone that goes "quack quack moo"?
2008-05-02 05:59:00 You know I saw this today over at Engadget and had to post about it because it's something so stupid it made me crack up immediately. You know those "super awesome" toys you had as a kid that would make farm sounds when you pulled the string. Well apparently someone decided packaging an iPhone look a like with farm animals and selling it cheaper than most picture frames sell for, would be something worthwhile. The Toggolino Phone apparently just is dieing to make the kid inside smile, and snicker a bit, I mean it looks like its made from the worlds cheapest plastic and cardboard. Hitachi's Ultra-Sexy Ultra-Thin 1.5" LCD HDTV's hit the USA!
2008-05-02 05:49:00 Yep you heard me right, those ultra sexy TV's that caused the huge stir at CES are now on the market. No you don't have to fly to Japan to get one of Hitachi's new "1.5" Ultra Thin LCD HDTVs that come in at a beautifully thin 1.5" thick. Ok so these aren't the super ultra thin LCD TV's that they were measuring in millimeters, but hell 1.5" is still damn small for a 47" TV. The new UltraThin 1.5 series will be coming in 32", 37", 42" and 47" variants, and has also been broken down into 2 separate Series of models, the Director Series(X) and Ultra Vision(V) models. The X models will come with a 2 year warranty with sticker prices ranging between $1,999 and a whopping $4,699, and I can almost guarantee they won't be shipping with any pimpy HDMI splitters or even HDMI cables for your pleasure, no those goodies are always extra. But hey no one ever said beauty was cheap did they? The V series comes at a bit less, ranging between $1,799 and $4,499. While all of the sets are "on sa... More About: Sexy
Apple silently unveils AppleTV movie purchases.
2008-05-02 05:36:00 Apple in something that's quite different than the shows of giant announcements that it's known for went and did something that probably every person with an AppleTV immediately noticed, that is unless you've got some really cheap eyeglasses and can't see the da*n TV at all. Without a press event or a big hour long "we'll be back soon" message to hint at it's release, Apple went ahead and suttly enabled Movie Purchases on full-length films today. Prior to today you could only rent movies (much like the XBLVM, I wonder if the change is coming there soon as well, hmm) but after today Cupertino has completely enabled the purchasing of movies. This comes on the heals of the announcement that they will be releasing movies for rent/purchase the same day as the movies hit the DVD platform, another thing I'd love see come to the XBLVM (and Zune marketplace!). While the movies are available to buy details still remain pretty sketchy, such as how the pricing will actually work for ... More About: Apple
