Reporting from Chuuk, Micronesia
2007-11-01 13:04:00 I just spent one week in Chuuk, a beautiful and tranquil island in Micronesia . I helped a group of teachers to learn powerpoint, digital storytelling, and E-portfolio. It’s such a fun group! Nothing bothers them. And they bond like a group of fish in the ocean.Chuuk, comparing to the modern and over-developed Shanghai, is like the village I grew up in the 70s. No high rises, no big markets, no TV or radio signals, and power gets cut off daily. However, Chuuknese are happy and free, from debt, mortgage, traffic, stress, and all other worries we have in the “modern” life. Many people just sit on the street and watch the day goes by.Here is a picture of our good-bye dinner. I am holding a dark fish, which Michael (the tall and dark guy on my left) caught in the deep ocean and BBQ-ed. At least that is what he claimed. They asked me to post this picture on our blog and title it—SDSU students in the 70s (China’s 70s).
EDTEC Prof Speaks to Brazilian Educators: Seeks to Inspire Educational Chal
2007-10-21 00:32:00 Professor Bernie Dodge recently returned from a visit to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil where he had been invited to be the North American representative at a conference of the Brazilian Educational Technology Association (ABT). Acknowledging the difficulty of speaking on behalf of our entire continent, Bernie compared the use of technology in the U.S. and Brazil, then shared his perspective about exciting developments in social software, massively multiplayer virtual environments, learners creating their own knowledge and some legislative aspects of educational technology. He used Rogers’ model of diffusion of innovation to describe how new educational approaches were being spread via blogs, web sites, and other social software. While in Rio, Bernie also spoke at the Brazilian Army Language School. Wonderful Palau: from Minjuan
2007-07-29 04:22:00 I just finished a two-week teaching and tour in Palau . I taught EDTEC 572 to a cohort of students from Palau. A great majority of them are teachers from Palau public schools, including an untouched island in the far north, Kayagnel. I had the great fortune visiting Kayagnel with Valentina, a student who was born there. The boat was small and the ocean was rough; but I still had a great time!My last day there was a day to remember. I snorkeled at three different places. Because I do not swim well, a high school student who is working on the boat, pulled me everywhere with a life jacket. I saw beautiful corals and swam with the famous mushroom-like Jelly fish. Before ending the last class, the students gave me a beautiful set of necklace, earrings, and bracelet, all made with Palau money beads. They only gave these to special people. According to the custom, a male needs to put the necklace on me. Smyth was charged with the mission and he was nervous. He had to ask Melissa for help. E... More About: Wonderful

Evaluating the Impact of Technology on Learning
2007-06-07 05:15:00 Dr. Allison Rossett writes:"I'm intrigued by the impact of technology on how we learn and seek out information, of course. It also raises questions about how we plan and evaluate. If learning and reference and community move on demand and online, doesn't that have enormous ramifications for how we measure? And don't forget that there is lots of room for improvement -- A recent ASTD Benchmarking Forum study looked at course evaluations by Kirkpatrick level. While 94 percent of courses are examined for Level 1 and 34 percent are checked for knowledge, just 13 percent of courses are examined for Level 3, transfer behavior. What about Level 4? What percent of courses are held to questions about influence in the field? Only 3 percent are.I published an article in Training and Development this February. Take a look. What do YOU think?" CSU Systemwide Survey of Teacher Preparation Shows Top Tech Prep from SDSU
2007-05-19 17:12:00 SDSU's College of Education, (in cooperation with the Office of the Chancellor and the other CSU campuses with teacher prep programs) participates in an annual evaluation of teacher education, drawing not only on feedback from graduates but also on assessment of graduate readiness and performance by their K-12 supervisors. The EDTEC program provides nearly all of the technology training for SDSU's preservice educators through EDTEC 470 (see: http://edweb.sdsu.edu/Courses/EDTEC470/). The latest results suggest that SDSU graduates are better prepared for teaching with and using technology than their counterparts systemwide. On all of the technology-oriented questions, the percentage of SDSU's respondents choosing Well or adequately prepared far exceeded the reported systemwide percentage. Just a few examples (all focused on multiple subjects candidates) follow:As a new teacher, I am able to use computer-based technology to help students learn subjects of the curriculum (SDSU/87.5%; ... EDTEC's pivotal role in the SDSU Course Design Institute
2007-05-19 17:10:00 EDTEC is one of four campus entities (Center for Teaching and Learning; people, Information & Communication Technology; and Instructional Technology Services) sponsoring a major campus-wide event on May 21: Blending Learning and Hybrid Courses--synergizing classroom and online learning. Well over 100 faculty---representing both undergraduate and graduate programs as well as a variety of disciplines and class types---attended interactive sessions that focused on ways to reshape courses for delivery online; engage students who may be reticent about participating in web-based chats, forums, and discussion groups; help students work productivity with virtual teams and groups; ensure students take full advantage of online resources--whether instructor provided or accessed at the library; assess how well their hybrid courses are going--and make changes based on the data; and much, much more. Learning and Development at Wachovia
2007-05-19 16:52:00 90 minutes with Sandy Quesada: Special funding allowed the EDTEC Dept. to offer an exciting symposium on May 21 featuring Sandy Quesada, Wachovia Corporations, Senior Vice President for Learning and Development /General Banking Group. What We Can Learn from Infomercials: Dr. Rossett's IPSI Speech Highlights
2007-05-17 02:43:00 Allison Rossett gave the closing presentation at the ISPI conference in San Francisco earlier this month and has shared a few highlights for those of us who could not attend..."If I am susceptible to infomercials, and oh my goodness, I am, then I imagine you might be too. Are you? How about your clients? I am thinking that they too might be vulnerable to messages inspired by infomercials. How does the infomercial do what it does? How does the infomercial work? My sources…. A not-scholarly journal called the Ridiculous Infomercial Review (not kidding) and a podcast interview about infomercials from the NY Times with somebody who calls himself the business shrink, Peter Morris. Then you might also want to include all those late night visits to infomercials. Sort of "learning by doing—or watching."What is it that makes infomercials successful?Infomercials target our problems. They are designed to touch us, know us. When they show they know our pain, they succeed... Balder than you w... More About: Highlights , Learn , Speech
