The Quest for the Perfect Cocktail: Examining the Gin & Tonic

The Quest for the Perfect Cocktail : Examining the Gin & Tonic Source: http://www.slashfood.com/2007/04/29/the-q uest-for-the-perfect-cocktail-examining-t he-gin-and-tonic/As you may know I am a spirits fanatic, especially gin, and a big fan of fine cocktails. I have been doing intense research in the areas of spirits and cocktails for quite awhile and examining the details of what takes a cocktail and elevates it to the realm of sublime. Many cocktails have a plethora of ingredients, sadly they are dismal creations better suited to cleaning drains than sipping for enjoyment. For a good cocktail, usually less is more. Classically in a cocktail you have the main spirit or two, spirit or alcohol based modifiers to add their character, possibly a fruit component, a small but very important addition of something like bitters for complexity, and another modifier that brings down the strength of the drink. Usually this is melting ice/water, but in the case of highballs it is also soda, tonic, ...

Movie Review: Wind Chill

Movie Review : Wind ChillSource: http://www.cinematical.com/2007/04/28/rev iew-wind-chill/Much like Jodie Foster's Flightplan, Wind Chill is an example of a 'first hour' movie. The first hour, played alone, would make for an intriguing and suspenseful short film, with Emily Blunt and Ashton Holmes starring as two unnamed characters, college students who don't know each other but agree to share a car because they both need to travel the snowbound roads to Delaware. Because of the odd things he says and the questions he avoids during the trip, the girl begins to suspect that the boy is not who he says he is, and she starts to question why he seems intent on getting off the main highway and taking the back roads. Eventually, their car will end up swerving off the road and barreling into a snow drift, which is exactly the point when you should get up and leave the theater. Just leave the rest of it to your imagination, because what really happens next is not only stupid, it's also co...

USA Today Crowns New Generation of Scream Queens

USA Today Crowns New Genera tion of Scream Queen sSource: http://www.cinematical.com/2007/04/29/usa -today-crowns-new-generation-of-scream-qu eens/I'm not really sure what to think of USA Today's unexpected list of up-and-coming scream queens, but I have to start by pointing out that they felt it necessary to consult a representative from Troma on this matter. I mean, come on -- Troma? Are we really looking to the geniuses behind Poultrygeist for insights into future of the horror genre? Has it come to that? Okay, moving on. The first choice on their list is Rob Zombie's 36-year-wife, Sheri Moon, who has appeared in some of his movies, I guess. I don't know how that qualifies her as a scream queen in any way -- it seems like the simplest requirement of a scream queen is that she's college-age or thereabouts. If we're going to shoot for late-30s, then Dina Meyer should be on the list. Also on their list is Cerina Vincent, who I have the vaguest memory of in Cabin Fever and who co-s...

Karl Rove's Jim Crow Voter Suppression Machine is Humming Along Just Fine,

Karl Rove's Jim Crow Voter Suppression Machine is Humming Along Just Fine, All Ready for 2008By BuzzFlashCreated 04/24/2007 - 6:57amIt was an April 21st article that could easily escape your notice: "Ruling lets Arizona require proof of citizenship from voters." [1] The first paragraph of the Associated Press story reads, "A federal appeals court on Friday rejected an attempt to halt enforcement of Arizona's first-in-the-nation requirement that all residents prove they are U.S. citizens when they first register to vote."Not that the one article in itself should set off alarm bells. But when you put together evidence from the Bush Administration in regards to voter suppression tactics, the partisan U.S. prosecutors, and other indicators, it becomes clear -- as Greg Palast has been warning us ? that the Bush Republican Party plans to hold onto the White House for the GOP in 2008 through whatever means possible. The key electoral strategy, beginning with the infamous "felon purge" in ...

Gen Y's" Top 15 Most Trust ed Brand s Source: http://consumerist.com/consumer/branding/ gen-ys-top-15-most-trusted-brands-254501. phpAs much as we hate to fall back on sad concepts such as "Gen Y", Reader Plaid sent us an interesting list of the top 15 most trusted brands among new consumers aged 21-27. According to the research firm that put together the survey, the youngish are drawn to brands that speak to them in a "straightforward and stripped-down way, use plain packaging, and avoid excess," Personally, we don't find this surprising as we (and most of the people we know ) are suffering from some sort of extreme marketing exhaustion as a result of being young during the 80s and 90s.Plaid says, "I have to admit, I do prefer many of the brands on the list. However, as a marketing minor in undergrad, I'm kinda appalled that I've fallen for their marketing schemes." It's OK, buddy. Those Red Stripe commercials are too awesome to resist. Plus, the beer is good. Brand list inside.Th...

Tarantino's next film "Come Drink With Me?"

Tarantino's next film "Come Drink With Me?"Source: http://www.filmwad.com/tarantino-s-next-f ilm-come-drink-with-me--2284-p.htmlHaven' t heard this anywhere but the Hollywood Reporter. Apparently, the Weinstein Company is making a push to invest in Asian films, be they directed and starring Asian filmmakers or if they simply take place in Asia and surround Asian themes. One of the films the Weinstein Company has said is in production is a remake of the Hong Kong flick "Come Drink With Me" that will apparently?be directed by Quentin Tarantino. The original "Come Drink With Me" is a 1966 Hong Kong martial arts picture that's set in the Ming Dynasty that starred Cheng Pei-Pei and Yuen Hua. The film is considered one of the best martial arts films ever made. If this is true that Tarantino is remaking the film, there will be a lot of complainers (hell, there are still people bitching about how "Reservoir Dogs" ripped off John Woo flicks). But remember how badass the kung fu sequences we...

Though he recognized that it currently requires more "friction" to get legal content than illegal content, Roberts wasn't sure that the loss of DRM would be a good thing for the digital content industry in the long term.Paul Jessop, CTO of the RIAA, agreed that removing DRM could pose a particular challenge because open formats often mean "free" to consumers used to pulling down MP3s from peer-to-peer networks. Managing consumer expectations could be crucial to the long-term health of the industry. Roberts agreed, saying in...

Stripped: Your Guide to Gentleman's Club Etiquette Source: http://www.doubleviking.com/stripped-your -guide-to-gentleman-s-club-etiquette-4951 -p.htmlIt?s said that Disney Land is the happiest place on earth. While that may be for 5 and 10-year-old kids, adult males need something a bit more risqué ? we're talking about strip clubs. Also known as ?gentleman?s? clubs, these adult havens may just be the most perfect places on earth. They have booze, sports on the TV and most importantly, beautiful women that will gladly take off most (if not all) of their clothes for money. But even Heaven has rules. And so do strip clubs. Six Must-Know HDTV Facts

Six Must -Know HDTV Facts Source: http://tech.yahoo.com/blog/patterson/578D isappointed by how fuzzy CNN looks on your new HDTV? Wondering why Jack Bauer looks so soft and plump on your new flat-screen? Maybe it's because you're not really watching HD on your high-def TV. According to Audioholics, almost half of the 24 million homes with HDTVs lack an HD cable or satellite feed, and about a quarter of those surveyed didn't even know they were still watching non-HD signals. Why such big numbers? Actually, it's not hard to understand; I can't tell you how many times I've watched salespeople at TV stores push HDTVs on hapless shoppers, going on and on about the razor-sharp picture and surround sound, but not bothering to tell them how to get HD signals into their living rooms. The Audioholics story ticks off six things you need to know before you buy an HDTV, and it's a must-read if you're in the market for your first high-def set. Here's a brief summary of some of the pointers, a...

MUSIC: Find lyrics at Yahoo Music
2007-04-27 00:24:00
Yahoo Music has teamed up with Gracenote (the database from which most applications - like iTunes - pull CD data) to offer a giant, legal lyrics repository with lyrics from several major music publishers.Searching for lyrics online has always been somewhat of a hit-or-miss affair, with search results driving poor users to pop-up ridden web sites and questionably accurate lyrics. That's because for reasons beyond my limited mind, aggregating and publishing most song lyrics on the internet was technically illegal. Until yesterday, that is. With Yahoo's new lyric search, you can count on accurate lyrics drawn from a fairly comprehensive catalog. ? Adam PashYahoo Music Lyrics [via Yahoo Music Blog]

70 Reasons to Love Jack Nicholson

70 Reason s to Love Jack Nicholsonby Maggie Van OstrandJack Nicholson had a birthday over the weekend and you?ll never guess by looking at him which one it was. We all have our own reasons here in the U.S. of A and across the Big Pond, The Scotsman (which is why some of the words have funny spellings) has listed 70 more reasons to love the guy.1: NICHOLSON is a basketball nut, and is said to pay for his own court side seats to support his beloved LA Lakers. He enjoys hounding the opposition and the referee, and was arguing with officials so much during a 2001 Lakers playoff game that he was assessed as a technical foul. His refusal to miss a home game means that directors need to schedule filming around the Lakers? home fixtures.2: HE OWNS an impressive collection of fine art, which includes works by Tamara de Lempicka and Pablo Picasso. One of the Picassos hangs in his toilet.3: AS WELL as basketball, he loves golf and is a keen player and spectator. His clubs are often to hand - as...

Renault-Nissan Chief Executive Carlos Ghosn is betting that for autos, the magic number is under $3,000. At a plant-opening ceremony in India Apr. 4, he was already talking up the industry's next challenge: a future model that would sport a sticker price as low as $2,500?about 40% less than the least expensive subcompact currently on the market. Renault-Nissan is the first global automaker to take up the gauntlet thrown down in 2003 by India's Tata Motors, which plans to launch a $2,500 car next year. Both are leading a race to the bottom that could affect the business every bit as much as Henry Ford's Model T did a century ago. After years of making their mass-market cars more expensive, the world's automakers have abruptly shifted int...

How Wal-Mart's TV Price s Crushed RivalsThe retailer's holiday decision to slash prices on flat-panel sets?selling one for less than $1,000?proved disastrous for electronics stores.Source:http://www.businessweek.com /bwdaily/dnflash/content/apr2007/db200704 23_364297.htm?campaign_id=rss_topStoriesL ast "Black Friday," for its annual post-Thanksgiving sales blitz, Wal-Mart Stores (WMT) decided to slash the price of one of the hottest electronics items for the holidays?the 42-inch flat-panel TV?to $988. The world's largest retailer had staked similarly audacious positions before, in numerous product categories, as part of its quest to remain U.S. retailing's "low-price leader." In turn, Wal-Mart's move caused a freefall in prices of flat-panel televisions at hundreds of retailers?to the glee of many people who were then able to afford their first big-screen plasma or liquid-crystal-display model. Now, it is becoming apparent that Wal-Mart's calculated decision to break the $1,000 bar...
