How To Destroy The World

Top 5 Ways To Create an EarthquakeIn the first Superman movie, supervillain Lex Luthor plans to trigger a massive, California-detaching earthquake by detonating a couple of nuclear weapons in the San Andreas Fault.Crazy Lex! That scheme never would have worked, geologists will tell you. But, if he'd been serious about creating an earthquake, there are ways he could have actually done it. He would just have to inject some liquid (as some carbon-sequestration schemes propose) deep into the Earth's crust, or bore a few hundred thousand tons of coal out of a mountain."In the past, people never thought that human activity could have such a big impact, but it can," said Christian Klose, a geohazards researcher at Columbia's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory. It turns out, actually, that the human production of earthquakes is hardly supervillain-worthy. It's downright commonplace: Klose estimates that 25 percent of Britain's recorded seismic events were caused by people. Most of these hu...

How To Hedge Against Rising Gas and Oil Prices?
2008-05-12 23:43:00
Everybody?s talking about gas prices? they?ve reached another high, everybody wants a hybrid? so why not explore how an individual can try to limit their exposure to gas prices? How much more are you really paying?Yes, $50 for a fill-up hits some sort of mental trigger, but sometimes I wonder if people really have calculated exactly how much more they are paying. According to AAA, the current national average is $3.70/gal, while a year ago it was $3.05. If your car gets 20 miles per gallon, you drive 12,000 miles per year, paying 65 cents more per gallon equates to an extra $390 per year. (If you got a stimulus check, this means a lot of it might have already been spent?)Now, for many families who are walking a financial tightrope, such a hard-to-avoid increase is just a another step closer to the edge. But for the Wii-playing, Starbucks-drinking crowd, is an extra $32/month really worth making a fuss over? I mean, some of these folks are the same ones whose eyes glaze over when I de...

Six Ways to Dine for Less
2008-04-01 06:33:00
World Appetites for oil and grain have put higher food prices on the menu ? literally.Wholesale restaurant food prices rose 7.4% in 2007, the largest increase in three decades, according to the National Restaurant Association, an industry group. That's even bigger than the jump consumers are seeing at the supermarket, where grocery prices have gone up 5.3%, per the Consumer Price Index.Blame a combination of inflation and surging demand for commodities in developing countries, says Nicole Miller Regan, senior research analyst at investment bank Piper Jaffray in Minneapolis. Oil prices hovering above $100 a barrel haven't helped, adding to shipping costs, as well as energy bills for on-site storage and cooking. The end result might be sticker shock the next time you dine out, from haute cuisine to McDonald's ? which has re-branded its Dollar Menu in many locations as the "Dollar Menu & More." Industrywide, average menu prices increased 3.7% in 2007, according to the National Re...

Obama goes nuts, supports wasting taxpayer dollars
2008-03-28 21:52:00
Excerpt:At a speech in Manhattan yesterday, Senator Barack Obama blamed lax oversight and deregulation for the housing sector's woes, saying that "Under Republican and Democratic administrations, we failed to guard against practices that all too often rewarded financial manipulation instead of productivity and sound business practices. The result has been a distorted market that creates bubbles instead of steady sustainable growth, a market that favors Wall Street over Main Street but ends up hurting both."He's right about that -- but his solution is to pump $30 billion into the system, in part to help bailout homeowners who were the beneficiary of overly aggressive mortgage lending. His position makes no sense: If people were able to buy homes because of a distorted market caused by lax oversight, doesn't pumping in money to help them keep "their" homes just prolong the problem? He also lashed out at Senator John McCain's reasonable, consistent argument that we shouldn't be bail...

High Yield Online Savings Accounts
2008-03-21 23:12:00
The rates on this page are current as of 21 March 2008.For more information about these banks, please see the 600+ comments that follow this list.I?ve heard a lot about online high-yield savings accounts, but I?ve never bothered to look into them. I did some research. I googled for ?high yield savings account? and ?ING direct? and ?HSBC Direct?. I followed promising links (and ads) from the search results. Here are the offers that I was able to find with minimal digging. All of these accounts are FDIC insured and, unless otherwise noted, can link to other bank accounts (your local credit union, for example).Capital One offers 3.85% APY, no fees, free checks and ATM card, an automatic savings plan. $1 minimum to open. Rate is 3.00% on balances below $10,000. This is a money market account.WT Direct offers 3.56% APY, no fees. No minimum to open, but your interest rate drops to 0.50% if you don?t have a $10,000 balance after 60 days.Washington Mutual offers 3.55% APY on a special savin...

Iraq War going GREAT!

Iraq suicide bombings kill at least 175Blasts that injured at least 200 targeted small Kurdish religious sectBAGHDAD - Four suicide bombers struck nearly simultaneously at communities of a small Kurdish sect in northwestern Iraq late Tuesday, killing at least 175 people and wounding 200 more, Iraqi military and local officials said. The death toll was the highest in a concerted attack since Nov. 23, when 215 people were killed by mortar fire and five car bombs in Baghdad?s Shiite Muslim enclave of Sadr City. And it was most vicious attack yet against the Yazidis, an ancient religious community in the region whose members are considered infidels by some Muslims. The bombings came as extremists staged other bold attacks: leveling a key bridge outside Baghdad and abducting five officials from an Oil Ministry compound in the capital in a raid using gunmen dressed as security officers. Nine U.S. soldiers also were reported killed, including five in a helicopter crash. The U.S. military, mea...

Use Virtual Credit Cards
2007-07-26 22:31:00
Use Virtual Credit Cards http://soundmoneytips.com/article/41 938?source=feedMillions of Americans are the victims of credit card fraud every year. A fifth of these people blame the internet. In fact, the top reason people shy away from internet shopping is the fear of theft of personal information.Virtual credit cards, also known as substitute credit card numbers or controlled payment numbers, have already been around almost seven years but have never caught on despite being a free and effective layer of protection. Here?s how they work. You sign up for the program (MBNA, Citibank, Discover and PayPal all have them.) and download their software. Enter your credit card info, and generate a new number whenever you want to make an online purchase.Depending on the program, the new number will be one-time use, have a small spending limit with an imminent expiration date, or will be able to be used multiple times but only with one merchant.Your actual account number will only be visible to ...

FAMILY GUY Movie??
2007-07-23 21:25:00
So When Will 'Family Guy' Make It Into Multiplexes?http://www.cinematical.com/20 07/07/22/so-when-will-family-guy-make-it- into-multiplexes/With The Simpsons Movie (finally) about to make its appearance, a few eyes have turned toward that other animated Fox series, and the new question seems to be this? Will Seth MacFarlane's Family Guy ever hit the silver screen? And if so, when? (And will it be NC-17?)During a recent appearance at the Just for Laughs Festival, Mr. MacFarlane told The Hollywood Reporter that while there certainly have been some discussions regarding a Family Guy movie, there's nothing down on paper just yet: "We have been trying to figure out how to do that and the series at the same time without the series suffering ... Nothing is official." Fans of the generally hilarious animated series are probably well aware that Family Guy has already spawned a direct-to-video movie ... one that wasn't any funnier than the TV episodes, if you're asking me. But hey, any ti...

High-Tech Squirrels Trained to Conduct Espionage
2007-07-23 21:18:00
High-Tech Squirrels Trained to Conduct EspionagePcol writes "In the July 20 issue of the Washington Post, columnist Al Kamen reports that the BBC has translated a story headlined 'spying squirrels,' published in the Iranian newspaper Resalat on the use of trained animals to conduct espionage against their country: 'A few weeks ago, 14 squirrels equipped with espionage systems of foreign intelligence services were captured by [Iranian] intelligence forces along the country's borders. These trained squirrels, each of which weighed just over 700 grams, were released on the borders of the country for intelligence and espionage purposes.' According the story the squirrels had 'GPS devices, bugging instruments and advanced cameras' in their bodies. 'Given the fast speed and the special physical features of these animals, they provide special capabilities for spying operations. Once the animals return to their place of origin, the intelligence gathered by them is then offloaded. . ...

Digital S.L.R.?s That Let You Shoot Like a ProBy DAVID POGUECopyright 2007 The New York Times CompanyTo an ordinary person, the summer might mean barbecues, baseball games and trips to the beach. To a photography nut, however, it means longer days of sunlight, brighter subject colors (beach balls, bathing suits) and more people who don?t have to be told to ?Smile!?Nothing has turned more ordinary people into shutterbugs than recent price drops in digital S.L.R. (single-lens reflex) cameras. These big, black, interchangeable-lens cameras may not fit in your pocket, and they may scream, ?I?m a tourist? when hanging from your neck, but their photos blow those little shirt-pocket cams out of the water. Digital S.L.R.?s turn on instantly, can take three shots per second, offer optional manual controls, go for weeks on a battery charge and have zero shutter lag. In short, they?re awesome. In the last few months, Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Olympus and Sony have each started selling new advanced ...

Splitting up with your cell phone carrier

Splitting up with your cell phone carrierBy Marguerite Reardonhttp://news.com.com/Splitting+up+w ith+your+cell+phone+carrier/2100-1036_3-6 195301.htmlBreaking up is hard to do, especially when you're getting dumped by your cell phone carrier. After eight years as a Sprint Nextel customer, Rene, who goes under the pseudonym MissDiva on SprintUsers.com, received a letter from Sprint Nextel telling her they were done.As is the case at the end of many relationships, Rene--who doesn't want her last name used because she was publicly criticized after posting her saga on the SprintUsers.com forum--said she never saw it coming."I am very upset," she said. "I was a very loyal customer. I didn't even get the courtesy of a phone call."Rene's service was cancelled because Sprint said she had called the customer support line too often. In a letter dated June 29, 2007, the company informed her that her service would be terminated on July 30, 2007. The letter also said she wouldn't have to pay t...

Verizon, LG intro new Chocolate
2007-07-06 23:08:00
Verizon, LG introduce new Chocolate We'll spare you the "even sweeter the second time around" punnage that Verizon couldn't help crack and get straight to the point here. Following up its hit VX8500 last year, Verizon has introduced a new Chocolate to its lineup, the aptly-named VX8550. The re-upped model gets very slightly trimmer by shaving a few hundredths of an inch off every dimension from its predecessor, a new keypad with touch feedback, and something LG is calling "Trace Motion" -- some sort of lighting that works in conjunction with the new nav wheel. Carried over from the original Chocolate are the 1.3 megapixel cam, microSD slot, and wealth of music-related features, though sadly, the rumored 3.5mm jack ain't here. Look for it in stores July 9 in your choice of "Black Cherry" and "Blue Mint."

How Facebook could crush MySpace, Yahoo!, and Google.
2007-07-04 01:09:00
In Your FaceHow Facebook could crush MySpace, Yahoo !, and Google .By Christopher BeamThere comes a time in every young person's life?soon after teething, usually?when she must make a momentous decision: MySpace or Facebook? One's preference is a matter of taste. MySpace, if you ask me, is a spam-infested state of nature. The average user page comes with a crapload of embedded music and video players, some seizure-inducing wallpaper, and a bunch of friend requests from "models" who want to "get to know you." (It also happens to be nearly three times the size of Facebook.) Facebook, on the other hand, is much less customizable but also a lot more reassuring. The interface is comfy, sturdy, and attractive without being showy?the kind of social network you'd bring home to Mom. Think of it as the Volvo of social networking. But a few weeks ago, Facebook pulled a MySpace-like maneuver. The site tore down its walls and opened its pages to outside developers. A new tool kit called Facebook...

Carlos Slim edges out Bill "Fatty Fat Fat" Gates as world's richest person
2007-07-04 01:08:00
Source: http://www.engadget.com/2007/07/03/carlos -slim-edges-out-bill-fatty-fat-fat-gates- as-worlds-rich/It was probably inevitable, with Bill Gates handing out his cash right and left, and Microsoft's stock in pretty much a holding pattern for most of the 2000's, but it's still sad to see our man Bill get knocked off the top spot on the "world's richest" list. His replacement is no stranger to tech though, Carlos Slim built his fortune in the Mexican telecom biz, and has amassed an estimated net worth of $67.8 billion, thanks to a surge in the shares of America Movil. Slim's fortune represents 8% of Mexico's gross domestic product, and whatever he lacks in geek cred he more than makes up on the streets with that entirely gangster name of his.

Wal-Qaida? Ads link retailer and terrorismSource: http://wmt.bloggingstocks.com/2007/07/03/ wal-qaida-ads-link-retailer-and-terrorism /After reading the latest story on an advertising campaign by WakeUp Wal-Mart, I was left with a little "shock and awe" about the message the activist group has put out against the world's largest retailer. In what I would consider a very strong yet indirect connection, the new advertising campaign loosely attempts to connect Wal-Mart with terrorism as it mentions the cookie crumb trail from Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT) to China to Afghanistan. Okay, that inference warranted a little more reading from yours truly. The connection that is made links the dots between Wal-Mart's business relationship with China (which is mind-boggingly huge) and how China also supports terrorists in Afghanistan by shipping weapons there. The television ad then ends with "So, before you think about shopping at Wal-Mart think about that." What is doesn't mention is that the U.S. ec...

Movie Review: Transformers
2007-07-04 00:50:00
Review: Transformers If Michael Bay's intention was to make a Transformers movie that would have the established fans peeing in their pants and clapping with nerdly glee, he's succeeded in fine form. If, however, Michael Bay's intention was to create an accessible sci-fi adventure movie that could bring in moviegoers who believe a "transformer" is something you stick into your fuse box ... he's failed pretty miserably. Hitting the screens with all the subtlety of a 50-piece drum set thrown down an eternal flight of stairs, Transformers should have been bankrolled by the fine people of Tylenol: Twelve random minutes of the flick are enough to give you a brain-bruising migraine. But loud and mindless I can handle. Lord knows I'm a fan of enough empty vessels like Transformers. (Indeed, I'm even a Bay supporter sometimes. I adore The Rock, I consider Armageddon a blissfully guilty pleasure, and I'm one of the few who bothered to find some good things in The Island. The less said a...
