Build your own USB charger
2008-02-26 08:31:00
I read the Guru's post about a USB charger out on DealExtreme and I immediately remembered a post I've read a while ago on an Arabic mobile forum. It describes building your own USB mobile charger that will eventually look similar to the 6$ charger. I haven't tested this myself, but user comments on this thread were very promising. This is a translation of the guide, original thread is on ArabNokia. Please note that I'm not responsible for any damages that might happen to your phone because of following this guide. I have not tried it myself and I'm not 100% sure if it works, or if it is safe to perform. Here we go: Get a cheap compatible Car Charger and a cheap USB mouse. We won't need the charger itself, we'll only be using its end the connects to the phone. Cut it off but leaving a fair length of cable attached to it Same thing in the USB mouse, we'll be needing only the USB end. Cut it off, also leaving a fair length of the cable. Unwire both cables. In the charger ...

See New, Hear New, Feel New
2008-02-23 19:08:00
I've had the N81 for 2 weeks now and I've been asking myself, why N81? What makes somebody buy an N81? Or what makes me I, give up my money on some phone that has a 2mpx camera, no GPS and no acceleration sensor? Maybe because it just follows Nokia's rules? The See New, Hear New, Feel New thing? N81: A couple of Notes
2008-02-23 15:25:00
Last week I noticed my N81's firm was not updated so I backed up phone memory, plugged in the USB cable, and started the update. 20 minutes later, the update was complete, unplugged the phone, waited till it booted so as to head directly to memory application to restore back up. The phone booted and to my surprise, everything was the same. Same concert theme, same standby apps, same settings, same everything. There was a moment that I thought the update was unsuccessful and the phone somehow restored itself, then I remembered that a couple of months ago Nokia induced a new technique in software updates that does not destroy phone memory data and settings after the update. Kudos Nokia! The other thing I want to note, is the Switch application. Switching phones will make you usually lose messages everytime you Switch phones. That's why Switch came to replace data transfer and facilitate the Switch process. And nice name picking; Switch. Btw can you say switch 15 times without mistak...

Finally a Facebook application
2008-02-23 04:16:00
I wondered many times why no one has written yet a Facebook application. A one that lets you update your status, check for new requests, pokes... etc. Anyway, somebody was kind enough to do so finally (thanks!) and released version 1.0 of MobileFacebook. To get it to work you need to click here to get a clearance from Facebook for this application, then download the actual app from here. And It's a jar type so your phone supports it ;)

N81 Tip: Did you know?
2008-02-17 09:59:00
In music player when scrolling music list using the down/up button, did you know that if you release the button then quickly hold it again, increases the scroll speed? That could be like double clicking, but only the second click is while already scrolling, not from the beginning..

It can actually stand in all positions
2008-02-16 14:29:00
I like the fact that the N81 has almost flat top, bottom, left, right surfaces. This enables it to stand in all positions even upside down. This is handy when using self timer while taking pictures.

N81 8GB: Music Power
2008-02-16 00:08:00
My phone is my Music player. What I care probably the most about a phone is its music playing capabilities; sound quality/volume, number of songs it can carry and simplicity in control. I literally listen to music on my phone everyday, every time when there is nothing to do or when there is. Before the N81, I used to move around with about 300 tracks on my N80's 1GB miniSD. The phone just wouldn't stop screaming memory low delete some data. It also gets more frustrating when I want to add a song, then I have to delete one in exchange so there will be enough space for it. 8GB is like heaven! Whatever music I want to listen to I could just download them to the mass memory without fear of being faced by the stupid memory low message! Thumbs UP! Headset: I don't know if it's the phone or the supplied headsets, but the sound quality produced when playing music is absolutely impressive! I just can't get enough of it! Visualisation: Visualisation looks.. damn cheap! I agree I don't ...

Get contacts from broken Backup
2008-02-15 21:40:00
What's the worst that could happen when you upgrade your phone's firmware or format it? (of course other than damaging the phone itself ).. The inability to restore backup! Sometimes the phone just refuses to restore the backed up phone memory. This is pretty frustrating specially if you don't have a back up of at least contacts and messages somewhere else. In this guide however, I'll show you how you could retrieve most of the contacts, and if you're lucky enough, all of them.. First connect your phone to PC in Data Transfer mode. Find backup folder (you'll have to show hidden files in order to see it), then copy the file Backup .arc from it to PC. You can now disconnect your phone. Download Backup Parser and place it in the same folder of your backup. This program extracts the Backup file into several files inside which, lies the contacts file. Run Backup Parser and wait until it finishes. The process could take up to several hours. Now we have to find out which is the con...

N81: Buttons Buttons Buttons...
2008-02-12 15:06:00
I've had the N81 for 2 days now, and the first thing that took my attention is the number of buttons. There is a total number of 17 buttons on N81's interface without counting numbers pad, camera, volume and power buttons. 17 is a huge number if distributed on such a small space, but this is where Nokia got smart by letting only buttons to be used light up in their appropriate time. For example, music keys light up when you're listening to music, game Keys only light up when you're playing a game. You'll never feel the place is overcrowded. Thumbs up! NaviWheel: It's not as smooth as the ipod's. Sometimes I just can't get it to scroll properly, but I love it! It works in Music player, it works in Gallery, and in Multimedia menu. And it's damn fast! Thumbs up! Game Keys: Before seeing them in real, I couldn't really get that there are actually 2 buttons on the top phone just for games.. And you know what, I download and play games only because I love these 2 buttons...

N96: It's getting hotter!!
2008-02-12 05:04:00
What do you get if you blend an N95 8GB and an N81 8GB altogether??? A 16 GB N96!! MWC unveiled today the Ultimate Nokia N96. With the 16 GB Internal Memory and the 128 MB RAM I bet you'll never see the memory low message again. The smart dual slide is awesome; If you play games, dedicated game buttons light up, if you listen to music, dedicated music buttons light up instead. There is also a beautiful stand arm so watching videos can never be easier. No news about whether acceleration sensor is available or not, but I hope it's there. Before the N96 came into officiality, a friend asked me whether I prefer the N81 over the N95. I said I want an N95 with N81's looks and buttons. Take a look at N96's gallery and specs:     Specs Summary: WCDMA2100/900 (HSDPA) / EGSM900, GSM850/1800/1900 MHz (EGPRS) 16GB internal flash memory, plus microSD memory card slot (hot swappable) for expandability and flexibility 128MB RAM, 256MB system memory Battery: Nokia Battery B...

Mobitubia arrived.. a bit late?
2008-02-01 14:43:00
The famous 10,000$ winner YouTube client finally managed to get out to public as a public beta. Even though it was supposed to be the first S60 YouTube client, it was beaten by applications that do the same job but arrived first like emTube or so who took all the shine of watching Youtube on mobile. However, because it took much time in development, I'm sure Sittiphol has delivered a best quality application; better then all who arrived first. Download Mobitubia and tell Sittiphol what you think!

A day without Internet
2008-01-31 07:48:00
Yesterday, a major Internet crisis has happened in Egypt. 70% of the Nationwide Network in Egypt was disrupted due to cuts in two international submarine cable systems in the Mediterranean Sea on Wednesday morning. Of course, the remaining 30% was extremely unusable. Being forced to no Internet for a whole Day made me feel like locked in a room and isolated from the outerworld. However, they seem to be doing a good job fixing this problem or else I wouldn't have been able to publish this post. Can you stand a day without Internet?

Now why is there a clone of every image in the Gallery?! And why the HELL are application sources shown in the Gallery?!!! Totally frustrating!!
