2007-11-01 00:19:00
To get more friends - on 43 things, as of today, there are 111 people who want to do this in the year 2007. This year has gone already. Well, how do you get more friends?I have been thinking why some people have large number of friends, and others don't. Some people are considered to be 'NICE', and others are not. I have read the famous book, 'How to win friends and influence people' by Dale Carnegie and would highly recommend that you read at least once if you want to make friends. I know within my friend circle, few friends receive plenty of phone calls, they keep in touch with everyone and people enjoy calling them or talking to them. Then, I observed their habits to make a list of tips for myself and you, the readers, on why they are famous among friends. This would be a growing list and hence I am planning to update often.List of MUST DO's:1. People like good news. So, be a good-news carrier. 2. Smile often - smile or laugh when you can, while you are o...

5 reasons why people do not leave comments on your Blogger blog
2007-10-30 01:59:00
These 5 reasons apply to the users of Blog ger service only. I have to admit that commenting on some blogger blogs is not an easy task. There are few hurdles a reader need to cross before they comment. If you are a blogger user and wants to get more comments, please sort out your commenting options.1. Your blog says "You need a Blogger ID to comment on this blog"What if a reader do not have a blog, but wants to leave a comment. I am sure, there are some billion people who read blogs but do not have a blog. Fix this by logging into Blogger account ---> Settings ---> select 'Anyone' for 'Who can comment?'Certainly, the wordpress users are going to get pissed off.By this way, people can comment anonymous. Anonymous comments sometimes provide good feedback for your posts.2. Your blog shows a 'Word verification' AND you moderate the comments as well.If you have set 'Enable Comment Moderation', then you need not set 'Word verification' for commenting. Because, the word verificatio...

Can you actually download the whole Wikipedia?
2007-10-19 14:14:00
Wikipedia as you know, is the largest encyclopedia created by human beings and covers information on almost any topic on the cosmos. We also know the text and images contained, created by Wikipedians are free to use by anyone (You are not allowed to sell or make money from it).The question is can you download the whole wikipedia on your computer. YES. Wikipedia maintains periodical database dumps and they measure in Gigabytes (from 20 GB onwards). If you plan to download Wikipedia at any stage, visit http://download.wikimedia.orgBe aware, but, though Wikimedia foundation gives free access to download the Wikipedia, you will be successful only if you have a ultra-fast broadband and comfortable download limits(Say at least 30 - 40 GB). You can choose to download only few sections, however. For example, the September 2007 edition of Wikipedia (static html pages) can be download from this site http://static.wikipedia.org/downloads/Sep tember_2007/SOS Children has made use of the Wikipedia ...

Looking for a Keyboard shortcut to mute PC speaker volume?
2007-10-18 08:20:00
Do you want to mute the volume or silence the PC speakers with a keyboard shortcut? This will help if you rely on PC speakers to listen to music. And, this would be really handy, if suddenly your boss barges into your office room without any notice. Unfortunately, you can not set such a nice keyboard shortcut with Windows (if you know, let me hear it) So, here is a work around. Download and install Sound Control a small freeware. Start Sound Control. Right-click on the Sound Control icon on your taskbar and choose "Options". Look under the tab "Mixer and Hot Keys". You should see an option to set a shortcut to Mute. I have set a Win + X (windows key + X)  (I found it easy for me) for Mute. You can set a different combination with Ctrl , Alt or Win keys. Test the Shortcut key. If you press the same shortcut, Mute will release and you will hear the sound. You can set a shortcut to reduce or increase the volume. Try 8 Great American Wines fo...

Love shopping? You can support a Charity as well
2007-10-16 01:47:00
If you do online shopping, then without spending another penny, you can donate a percentage of your spendings to a charity. Confused? Usually, the affiliate marketers and publishers get a percentage for every referral they make to such online stores. Giveness springs from the same concept but they help to direct such commissions (affiliate sales) to charity programs. Giveness is a social network for philanthropists who love shopping. When you buy something from online stores such as Amazon or eBay, via Giveness, they donate a percentage of their earnings to a charity of your  choice directly. Giveness lists a big basket of about 134 online charities ranging from Children of Rural Africa to Sustainable Harvest International. When you sign up to Giveness, you can choose your favourite charities, before you do shopping. When the online stores send the commissions, all 100% of the money is sent to the charities. Now, you would have had a double joy as your shopping has not onl...

How to ignore a Facebook request in a polite way?
2007-10-15 03:21:00
One of my friends asked her if there is a polite way to ignore a friend request in Facebook ? She did not want to be too rude and she feared if facebook will send a "your request rejected" message to her friend.Fear not. Facebook is nice. The official facebook help section says, "Facebook never notifies anyone that you have ignored a friend request."So, when you decline a friend's request, facebook never sends any notification to the person. So, the first tip is you can safely reject the unwanted requests immediately. But, you can not cancel the request sent by your friend, also. What if your colleague or your uni mate asks you next time, 'Hey, did you receive my facebook invite?'. This is tricky to deal with.Prepare a set of standard answers, and provide them. For instance,"I really dont have a clue. I did 'Accept' your request, but, it gives some javascript/invlaid function error on my PC.""I am not big on facebook. I would prefer to be in touch in the real world!"Be creative, ma...

2007-10-14 11:44:00
Do you publish your blog RSS feeds with feedburner? Then you can increase your feed subscribers counts by bringing your old subscribers into your new feedburner account. And, the best part is you need not ask your old skool RSS readers who subscribed to your blog before you burnt the feedburner feed.If you are hosting your blog on Blogger, and you recently moved to your own custom domain, then this is a simple hack to increase your Feedburner Subs cribers count.Recently, feedburner gave the option of combining Blogger's default atom feeds with your feedburner. All you need to do is go to your Blogger account's Settings page.Click on "Site Feed". Use the empty box of "Post Feed Redirect URL" and paste your Feedburner feed URL.From now onwards, all your feeds will be combined. Anyone wishing to subscribe to your blog will get your feedburner feed. Now, you may ask how does that increase the subscribers count. The redirect URL settings add your previous (atom feed) subscribers who subscr...

Do this if you want your PC to do a meaningful Spell Check
2007-10-11 10:31:00
Are you using Spell Check feature in Ourlook, Word or Powerpoint? Do you think it gives crappy, incorrect suggestions as the right spellings? If you are living in Australia, you know that there are few things that are not written in the same way as others do. One good source to get used to the Australian spellings is to refer the Macquarie English dictionary. For instance, Australians prefer to use '-ise' for 'prioritise' instead of 'prioritize'. But, when I typed the 'ise' firefox will show as an error.Quick fix (for only firefox): Tools --> Options --> General --> Languages -- Add 'English [Au]' to your list and hit 'Move up' till it reaches the top of the list.Another way to overcome this problem is to edit the "Custom.dic" file that comes with the most of the applications such as Word, Outlook or Firefox.Where to find the custom dictionary file to edit:Firefox C:Documents and Settings\Application DataMozillaProfiles\persdict.datWord / Outlook /PowerpointC:Docu...

Does Australia need more active bloggers?

I have found Australia ns are very straightforward in expressing their opinions and thoughts. It is surprising however, to find only a few thousand active bloggers in Australia. Pity!Meg in her Recounting Australian Blogs has posted these questions. I have been thinking to write on these lines for a while. So, Here are my thoughts. What ideas do you have for promoting Aussie blogs and bloggers?Telly (television) will be my first medium to promote blogs and blogging. Do a special episode (or a series) about Blogging in prime-time shows such as current affairs, today tonight.Running an advert on a newspaper is the next best thing. Even if we put together 50 cents each, we can publish an ad on the Sunday newspaper. The promotion lines could be .."Start a blog, Change Australia", "Express yourself with a blog" (dont laugh!).Running a "Great Aussie Blogs" contest and let the readers vote on blogs under different categories.Creating an awareness on different blogging media and platforms -...
