Feedrer - a social network for RSS feed lovers
2007-09-03 06:02:00
Feedrer is a social network for feed readers. Before you ask, I will explain what it is about. We all track our favourite blogs and websites via the RSS feeds to save time and to read all the favourite items at one place.Google reader allows you to make certain things public (the feeds that you can share with others), and google offers those rss items on a public page as this one, Thiru's shared items (sorry, you are not supposed to monetize those feeds, ok?Google can build a social network around such shared RSS feeds by us and they can put together a Digg like site. They have not done it yet. Here's where Feedrer is coming in.Feedrer is a social network where you can add friends, and see what others are reading currently. Now, you can get a list of mini-feeds that your friends have subscribed. If you like a friend's feed then, you can subscribe to them with a click.Feedrer is a start-up and they are working on the site to add more features. What they can do is to add a front pa...

I have a Web 2.0 idea - ?Who are you??
2007-09-03 04:34:00
With Twitter, you answer ?What are you doing??At 43 things, you say, ?What you want to do??At WAYN, they ask, ?Where are you now??Now, I propose a new idea for another web service. Answer a simple question, ?Who are you??Huh, you don?t say a thing. Let your friends say all about you. Let your friends add tags (sort of one-word testimonials) on you saying, ?sexy?, ?brave?, ?good guy?, ?SOB?, ?BS? or whatever. Part this idea is inspired by the movie ?Citizen Kane?. What if we sit back and ask our friends to describe us. We can borrow a dictionary of adjectives; let the users tag their friends. We need not develop this as a web service (enough of existing social networks), this service can be developed as a facebook application.Ok, you heard this idea from me. But, I no nothing about programming or APIs (I know there are geeks out there, come on!). I can give more details on this idea, we can develop a cool widget.Wants to get famous, Precious?Bored? There are 240 fun things that you c...

Switch between your different Wirless Networks easily
2007-08-27 04:11:00
I use my laptop to access Internet at Office, Public library and at my home. All the three are of different (wirlesss/ proxy settings) networks and I was struggling to switch between different Connection / Network settings. I had to use IE (duh!) for office and Firefox at home. When I use at library, I had change the settings at IE. Now, there is a ready-to-use solution in our hands. Daniel Milner's free program "Net Profiles" (link via Amit of Digital Inspiration) solves this problem of swtiching between different networks. This free program when installed on your laptop automatically detects the wirless network (office or home), and changes the corresponding settings. You need not worry about remembering connection settings, or use different browsers for different networks. Additional features include, You can have different network drives for each profile. You can have a different "default printer". Unique, home pages, desktop profiles for each networ...

Gift your loved ones a Real Star! Well, sorta..
2007-08-25 06:37:00
Yes, at least thats how the companies who 'specialize in naming the stars' say to you. One of my friend said, he bought a real star for her girl friend for her birthday. I said, 'A real star? You must be kidding, dude!'. He replied, ' Yes, even the company is approved by NASA! (oh buggers!)' and went on and on. At least, his girl friend believes in the "special gift" given by her boy friend.I did a bit of research - and found out this. The International Astronomical Union is the official body who can assign name to a star - they do their duty as and when a star is found in the galaxy. In fact, the IAU provides a technical number for each star - not a fancy name. So, none of the companies that proclaim that you can buy a star and name it after anything you like is technically false propaganda. Here's what IAU says in its website about the star selling companies."As an international scientific organization, the IAU dissociates itself entirely from the commercial practice of "s...

A few weeks ago, I wrote a post, Getting Famous in Flick r : Killer tips for Flickr users , which provided some tips and tricks on using flickr - the most-loved photo sharing tool on the web - and becoming popular with it. I want to provide some more tips in this second post.1. Essential things, FirstNow, flickr requires a valid yahoo account (username and password) to login to it. By default, flickr uses your filename as the title of your photo - like this one, 'DSC4506' for a photo that you shot using your Point and Shoot camera. After uploading, flickr will ask you enter a title and description for each photo. Add a catchy title and a small description to provide more information on the photo. Additionally, tags can be added to each photo describing the location where you shot this photo, objects, t...

Are you constantly complaining about problems?

"The World is not dangerous because of those who do harmbut because of those who look at it without doing anything."- Albert EinsteinThis is one of my favourite quote from my favourite scientist. Now, tell me honestly how often we have ignored some happenings saying,"I don't care!","What goes to my father","None of my business","It's all F**King Howard (or whoever) Government" etc etc.Bribery, Prostitution, Crime, Beggars, Theft, Abuse, Scandals.. What else. (We watch and sit silent , sometimes we discuss and forget ..Till we get a new topic!)We are very happy to (including myself) sit and watch television, read newspapers – discuss in the canteen, then go back and do the same thing again and again. We always blame the system. We forget that we are also part of the system. If you are not part of the solution, then you are also a problem. Is that sounds harsh? I don't know from where to start.Everyone is blaming everyone other than himself. I am Honest but, the world is NOT. If e...

Seven more Secret habits of Successful Bloggers
2007-08-02 02:57:00
After posting the “Seven Habits of Highly Effective Bloggers ”, I thought I missed out some of the little-known, secretive habits of the successful bloggers. So, here we go:1. Volume blogging: Can you guess how many blog posts a typical ‘A’ list blogger publishes every week? 7 or 15. No, the average is about 28 (that is 4 posts a day). When you post in such great volumes and regularly paced out publishing, the search engines take note of your blog’s update schedule and revisit your blog more often. When you publish a post, say every 6 hours, you attract visitors from every time zone – so, the chances of getting new readership is very high.2. Value blogging: Once in few days, they write a blog post that you can not resist reading it at once. That’s value blog post. It might be a collection of tips or resources from the web; you would love to blog about it in your blog pointing to it (that’s link bait).3. 5 things that you MUST do manage comments on your blog
2007-07-28 01:40:00
Comments are the lifeline of blogs. They encourage bloggers to write more. But, many of the new bloggers find it hard to get comments and they find it difficult to manage the comments (most of them get loads of spam comments). Here are the basic 5 steps to manage comments on your blog. 1) Use word verifications That’s an easy way to stop spam comments. Blog ger, Wordpress or any other popular blogging platform provides this option to show a piece of captcha that must be solved for a valid comment. This step prevents the spammy bots filling up your blog’s ‘comment form’ with unwanted, junk marketing messages. Blogger has an inbuilt ‘word verification enable’ feature that can be found under the Settings  Comments. 2) Moderate comments Moderating the comments left by users is essential, because – some people leave spam comments with a marketing objective. It is good for you if you set comment notification by email. You will receive an em...

5 Reasons why you MUST leave comments on other blogs
2007-07-27 03:38:00
Do you know what a blogger’s wildest dream will be? It may go like this: waking up one fine day - to find lot of comments on their blog posts. A blog is a personal take on a subject matter, and the comments made by the readers of the blog are a way to assess the viewpoint. If you have a established blog, your readers would engage in a discussion which will add good value to the blog post itself. 1) Because, every blogger loves comments: I will be happy to see comments on my blog (like any other blogger). When they are happy, they will pay you back a visit (to your blog) and in case if you have a worthy content, they might even link back to it. Nowadays, I regularly login to check if I have got any new comments rather than checking my Google Analytics page. I have seen that it is difficult to get 'the first comment', once someone comments, people would like to follow. The most commented page on this blog is 'StumbleUpon vs. Digg:Which is best for promoting a blog' - and i...

10 Powerful Money Saving tips that have worked for me: Part 2
2007-07-26 04:36:00
Before reading the second part, start with the part 1 of "Money Saving Tips "I am not a qualified financial advisor, but over these years, I have learnt few things that worked for me in saving money. Continuing from the yesterday’s post, here are the remaining five money saving tips that have worked for me. You would’ve heard many of them and they are nothing but common-sense, if you actually look at them. They will work for you as well, I bet. 6) When you go in a group, Spend for yourself onlyWhen going in a group, try to spend for yourself only. Don’t get me wrong. You can spend for your friends once in a while, but do not make it as a habit and becoming a sponsor of everyone. Have a check on the amount you spend. If someone is paying for you, give back your money to them or spend for them another time. Keep track of the records on things such as these - who spent for you and for whom you have spent. I don’t keep track of every cent with my close friends (‘You pay a movie...

10 Powerful Money Saving tips that have worked for me: Part 1
2007-07-25 03:35:00
Here are the 10 money saving tips that have worked for me which would very well work for you to. I have acquired them by own experience of money (mis)management and from my friends, books and some old financial advisors. I am going to publish it as a two-part post because, it is fairly long and I think it is worth contemplating on each of these five aspect for a while. I am eagerly waiting for your comment as usual. 1) Pay yourself firstWhen the pay check comes, who comes to our mind first? Right, the bills. But, if you choose to set aside a specified sum for savings, you have done the first step in creating a secure future. The savings account you transfer should be without an ATM card access and the savings are for your major pleasure – for the year-end vacation, or for your dream car. Additional tip: Ask your bank if they provide an additional low-fee account that provides high-interest-rate (up to 8% returns) for the savings. They are termed as investment accounts or award-sav...

7 reasons why I bought the new “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows”
2007-07-24 05:58:00
I have not read the other six Harry Potter books, but I bought the 7th book. I am inclined towards reading non-fiction. Occasionally, if anyone recommends with a stick, I will read fiction such as ‘The Lord of the Rings’, ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’ and ‘Life of Pi’. But, I went and bought the ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows’ only after a thought.I chose to buy “Harry Potter” because,1) It is a legendary marketing success storyHave you heard of the Bloomsbury – the publishing company - before? Who would have ever thought in this Internet age, a series of books could rewrite and revive the publishing industry? All credits to the writer, J K Rowling, who single-handedly achieved this feat and took the world by a storm. This is also an example of a remarkable marketing success story which proved its stronghold against all odds of piracy. How many times a book hits the bestseller list shortly after the title was announced? Harry Potter introduced the technique...

Google TV is coming. Are you ready?

"I do not want to watch 100 channels for my favourite tv shows. I want one channel that could provide me with all my favourite shows".I am agreeing to the words spoken by Nicholas Negroponte, the founder and chairman of the One Laptop per Child non-profit association, in a conference a few months ago.You call it a personal television or a customizable tv or whatever fancy name you like. This is the future of tv, I guess. We spend most of our time in front of our PCs and on the web. Make that as a personal, internet tv. You have understood the concept what Googl e is talking about.Already, the success of social video sharing sites such as YouTube and MetCafe shows that we no longer would rush home to watch our evening favourite tv shows. We can afford miss them because, most probably we can find them online and we can watch them whenever we wish.Google has much grander plans for Internet TV.
