2007-08-08 06:15:00 TOKYO: Japan Airlines, the largest Asian carrier by sales, said Monday that its first-quarter loss narrowed from a year earlier as it eliminated staff and planes, dropped unprofitable routes and increased revenue from flying.The airline's net loss was ¥4.29 billion, or $36.5 million, in the three months through June, compared with a loss of ¥26.8 billion a year earlier. Sales fell 0.3 percent to ¥521 billion.Japan Air reiterated that it would post an annual profit this year for the first time in three years, saying Monday that it will earn ¥7 billion in the 12 months through March.Growing business travel to China and Southeast Asia lifted income from flying, though sale of a stake in the unit Jalux, an airport store operator, cut overall revenue.
