Fuel prices up, air fares to follow
2007-08-10 14:59:00 Air fares are set to go up again as airlines contemplate increasing the fuel surcharge in the range of Rs 150-200 per ticket. This is to offset the 3.3 per cent increase in jet fuel prices. On August 1, oil companies hiked jet fuel prices due to the steep increase in global crude oil prices that crossed over $78 a barrel. This will be the first time that domestic airline companies will be increasing the fuel surcharge twice in a span of little over a month. On July 3, the airlines had increased the fuel surcharge by Rs 50, taking the total fuel surcharge to Rs 950. Apart from this, they also levy a congestion surcharge of Rs 150. ?We have not taken any decision so far but we will discuss about it in a day or two,? said Jet Airways Executive Director Saroj Datta. ?We are looking at it and will take a decision by tomorrow. If jet fuel prices go up every month, we cannot do much. We have to pass on the additional burden to passengers. How long will we go on bearing losses? But we will ... India aims to ease air space management snarls
2007-08-09 14:22:00 India's civil aviation ministry has initiated talks with the defence establishment to ease restrictions on the use of air space to accommodate growing civilian traffic. And it has projected a two-fold increase in the fleet size of carriers over the next five years. With military concerns being a sensitive issue and airspace management a pressing need, talks are on to work out a plan for the flexible use of India's air space, said Airports Authority of India (AAI) chairman K. Ramalingam. 'We have an active dialogue on with the Indian Air Force (IAF). As a result, Goa has got more flying hours. Also Hindon (an IAF station near Delhi) has allowed us the use of air space,' K.N. Srivastava, joint secretary in the civil aviation ministry said. The release of air space under IAF is, in fact, among the key suggestions in the draft civil aviation policy and the Vision-2020 document that is being examined by a group of ministers under External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee.Air traffic... Air India's maiden flight to NY leaves near-empty
2007-08-04 05:39:00 New aircraft, new look and new routes - but the same old story, Air India is still struggling. It managed to get just 80 people on board its first non-stop Mumbai-New York flight. It may have been a grand welcome for Air India's new Boeing 777 aircraft but the passenger response was luke warm. Its maiden non-stop flight between India and the US took off with only 80 passengers. That's even though the aircraft can carry 238 people. Air India officials say August is a lean month anyway, and besides, they announced the flight late. But they also admit fares were 20 to 40 per cent higher than the competition. That's now been corrected. But industry sources say Air India launched the service too close to the Jet Airways maiden flight to the US via Brussels, which is due to take off on the 5th of August. They reason that passengers opted for Jet. Jet Airways officials claim its first flight to the US is fully booked. That's even though some of its fares are higher than Air India's. J... Goa may lose second airport at Mopa
2007-08-02 06:15:00 If Goa doesn't make up its mind on a second airport fast enough, you may have to fly to Maharashtra and then drive to reach the state of famed beaches. Maharashtra has submitted a proposal to build an airport in Sindhudurg, that's about 50 km from Goa. On the other hand, the proposal to build Goa's second airport at Mopa is embroiled in a bitter fight of business interests within the state. Now the aviation ministry is going to ask Goa for a final decision before deciding Maharashtra's proposal. The existing Dabolim airport, a Naval base being used for civil flights, is in southern part of Goa while the proposed site for the second airport - a purely civilian one - is at Mopa in north Goa. So intense is the rivalry in business interests in these parts of the state that tourism industry in south Goa fears losing business if the civil airport is set up in north. This factor, coupled with other local socio-economic factors, has stopped land acquisition. This indecision is happening... More About: Airport , Econ

Private carriers up in arms over new ground handling policy
2007-07-30 06:29:00 Private carriers are up in arms against the government?s decision not to allow them to undertake their own ground handling under a new policy that is awaiting Cabinet approval. They say this would increase the cost of ground handling four to seven times, depending on the airport, and that this additional cost will have to be passed on to customers. Under the proposed new policy, only the national carrier, ground handling companies and airport operators can offer these services. Currently, Jet Airways, SpiceJet and GoAir are among the major airlines that look after their ground-handling at many airports. The new policy, once approved, will be applicable immediately at new airports like Hyderabad and Bangalore which will be operational next year. In other cities, the policy will be implemented after January 1, 2009. Pawan Hans negotiating for BSF's Mi-17 helicopters
2007-07-30 06:11:00 India?s largest helicopter operator Pawan Hans is negotiating with the BSF to acquire its six Mi-17 helicopters on lease. In fact, the negotiations have got stuck over the number of flying hours that Pawan Hans is willing to yield in lieu of acquiring these helicopters. It is estimated that total worth of these six helicopters in the international market is around Rs 280 cr to Rs 300 cr, sources close to the deal said. Though BSF, which is primarily engaged in providing security at the border areas, bought six helicopters more than three years ago, five of those have been lying idle in Delhi?s Safdarganj airport (behind Rajiv Gandhi Bhavan) as the paramilitary force possesses just three pilots to run its fleet. Significantly, getting a pilot is not an easy job as civilian pilots are not allowed to fly BSF choppers. When contacted, director general of BSF, A K Mitra confirmed that they have been working on a "suitable sharing model" so that the fleet can be optimally utilised. "It ha... More About: Helicopters

2007-07-30 06:02:00 Turbulent weather in a 30-mile radius around Mumbai spelt some bad luck for two Jet Airway s flights on Friday evening, with one reporting a lightning strike and another a windowpane crack in the cockpit. An incoming flight from Chennai (9W-470) requested priority landing at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, when window No 2 on the left side of the cockpit (near the commander's seat) started cracking? ?arcing? in aviation parlance. "The crack appeared while the aircraft was descending from 41,000 feet to 32,000 feet," said a Jet Airways official. "It generally happens due to sudden change in temperature or because of an electrical issue," the official added. 2007-07-30 05:59:00 Finland's flag carrier Finnair, which operates two flights to as many Indian gateways from Helsinki, is working on a frequent flyer partnership with an Indian carrier as a precursor to a code share agreement. Finnair already has interline agreements with the likes of Jet Airways, Kingfisher Airlines and Indian, under which airline partners accept each other's travel tickets. "We are trying to find an Indian partner for frequent flyer programme," Finnair Director (India region) Taina Tornstrom said, adding this would take the airline closer to a code share agreement. A code share pact would allow airlines to sell tickets on routes and flights operated by a partner as their own.
