May 20, 1873 - The Pants That Changed the World
2008-05-20 16:48:00 May 20, 1873: Blue jeans assume their distinctive form when a patent is issued for the rivet process used to strengthen the pockets on what were then called "waist overalls." Jacob Youphes, a Latvian immigrant who changed his name to Jacob Davis (.pdf) after coming to the United States in 1854, was working as a tailor in Reno, Nevada, when he hit on the idea of using copper rivets to reinforce denim working pants (.pdf). Since he obtained his denim from Levi Strauss & Co. in San Francisco, Davis approached Strauss with an offer to file for a joint patent. Strauss -- knowing a good thing when he saw it -- accepted, and the modern "blue jean" was born. Levi Strauss (.pdf) -- himself an immigrant from Bavaria -- arrived in San Francisco 20 years earlier, at the height of the California gold rush, to establish a wholesale dry-goods business. From various locations along the San Francisco waterfront, Strauss sold clothing, fabrics and other s... More About: World , Pants , The World
Why Don't You Get Rid of That Donorcycle?
2008-05-20 16:00:00 The term "donorcycle" irritates me. At least, it did, until I thought about the people who use it. See, using the word comes across as angry and scornful, but it's really just disguising the speaker's fear. Sure, sure, they go on about "all these" motorcyclists (usually in gangs of 50 or more, as I hear it) who fly through traffic with little regard for the safety of those around them. Why, they got cut off one time by a guy on a bike! Another time a whole bunch of motorcycles passed them, and they were so loud, and dressed so strangely! If you listen to them long enough, their fear becomes more evident. Are they afraid of motorcycles? Sure, at first glance. But are they really afraid of a machine that merely provides thrust and a means to direct it? No, what these folks are really afraid of is the underlying psychology of freedom and self-reliance. I believe certain people are afraid of bikers for the same reason certain people are afraid...
Bakker Grizzly All-Round puts big Gixxer power in an adventure package
2008-05-20 15:00:00 It might look something like a Beemer R1200GS Adventure - but it’s much nastier. Flying Dutchman Nico Bakker saw a gap in the market at the top end of the adventure Tourer segment - BMW’s massive Adventure is absolutely decked-out for touring, but probably sees far more road use than off-road in the hands of most owners. So why limit that bike to 100 horsepower? The Bakker Grizzly All-Round matches the BMW’s adventure credentials, with a comfy all-day riding position, sturdy braced frame, bash plates and massive armored luggage - but it’s built around a GSX-R1000 engine that’s around 80 horsepower up on the Beemer’s. Built in Holland and to the buyer’s specifications, the Grizzly can be ordered with your choice of most modern 4-cylinder superbike engines, although it’s been developed around the GSX-R. The frame, single-sided swinger, tank and fairing are custom built by Bakker, and other parts are brought in from Ducati... More About: Power , Package

2008-05-20 13:53:00 This mornings Motorcycle Commute to Tampa was in 80 degrees f. with some heavy cloud cover and a line of thunderstorms rolling in off of the Gulf of Mexico. Traffic moved well with no delays along the route. I passed several other motorcycles on the road this morning. FHP Cruiser running ambush in the median of the Veterans Expressway. It felt so strange to not ride to work yesterday. I hope the new tires arrive today so I can get them fitted and not worry about wet roads, again. Have a Great Day everyone! Sidi Doha Riding Boots - Revisited
2008-05-19 16:00:00 I received the Sidi Doha Riding Boots a week or so ago and I have to say, I Love These Riding Boots! They are well made and very comfortable. They have excellent arch supports and the laces make it easy to fit them as snugly or loose as you like. The Velcro strap secure the laces and helps secure the top of the boots. I have been wearing them daily to work during my commute and all day long in the office. These are by far the most comfortable riding boots I've ever worn, period. I paid $169.00 US, but I hear you can get them on eBay for even less. LATER Technorati Tags: RilySi,Ride it like you stole it,Motorcycle Riding,Motorcycle Commuting,FlatLand,Florida
Ride Your Motorcycle into the History Books June 13th
2008-05-19 15:00:00 Friday, June 13th, 2008 is the day that PD13 in Port Dover will be making Guinness World Record(TM) history. PD13 (Friday the 13th) in Port Dover has grown to be Canada's largest motorcycle event, with an estimated 150,000 attending last July in this fishing port on Lake Erie (pop. 6,000). This year, Friday the 13th falls only once - in June. "With attendance expected to soar, we see this as an opportunity to set a world record in the category of Largest Parade of Motorcycle s," says Norfolk County's Promotions Coordinator, Cindy Vanderstar. This will be the first record attempt, according to Guinness World Records. Places such as Daytona Beach, Sturgis and Harley Davidson's Head Office in Milwaukee have never made the attempt. PD13 began in 1981 when Chris Simon and 25 of his biker friends, through word-of-mouth, met in a bar now known as Angelo's. It was a Friday, November 13th. Every Friday the 13th thereafter, no matter what time of year, they met again... More About: Books , History , Ride

2008-05-19 13:56:00 This morning's commute started out in a balmy 77 degrees f. and within 2wo miles of the Casa, the heavens opened up and dumped some very heavy rain on FlatLand. It has not rained here in well over a month so the roads were immediately slick & greasy from the initial floating of the rain. I have new tires inbound to the Casa for today or tomorrow and the rear tire on the GS is basically a slick, so I turned around and headed back to the Casa and procured the demon truck for today's commute. This is the first time this year that I have driven the truck to work. Safe Riding Intentions
2008-05-16 16:00:00 I am of the school that believes our intentions shape our experiences. Simplistic example: Intend to do well and you will do well. I am also of the belief that the Spoken Word is more powerful than the Unspoken Word. Simplistic example:Telling someone you love them is more powerful than writing it down for them to read. I had made a habit of vocally stating my intentions before certain endeavors and find remarkable positive results are the consequence of these actions. None Simplistic example: Before every ride on a Motorcycle, while donning my riding gear, I verbally state my intentions as detailed below: Its my Intention to be a Safe Rider and Safe Driver, and to share the road with Safe Riders and Safe Drivers, and to arrive at my destinations on-time, feeling Relaxed, Refreshed and Invigorated, having enjoyed the ride and having enjoyed this beautiful weather for a ride. Tar Snakes and Far Horizons
2008-05-16 15:00:00 The open road calls to me almost constantly these days and I'm virtually powerless to resist the songs of this Siren. The far horizons I seek tend to find me trekking through the pits of the deadly Tar Snake. For those unfamiliar with this particular reptilian genus; it's habitat spans the width and breadth of North America and may be found in a hosts of countries around the globe. Even Ireland has not escaped the infiltration of the Tar Snake. For most of the year the Tar Snakes are dormant in North America but when the ambient temperatures climb near and into triple digits Fahrenheit they become active, and with this activity comes their appetite and need to feed. These deadly serpents feed almost exclusively on unaware Riders. I say ''almost exclusively" due to the fact that sometimes Riders that have had previous exposure to them still fall prey to their bite. Their feeding behavior is predictable and while understood, still claims victims every y... More About: Motorcycle , Riding , Horizons

New Florida Law Puts The Brakes On Motorcycle Wheelies
2008-05-15 18:23:00 Wheelie-popping daredevils, your days of dangerous road antics are nearing an end. New legislation that outlaws motorcycle wheelies is on its way to Gov. Charlie Crist, who should sign it in a flash. Few things are as potentially dangerous on Florida roads as motorcycle "stunters." There should be some recognition of the fact that there are bikes, sold and ridden legally, that are so powerful that merely opening the throttle can lift the front wheel off the ground. You can shift normally and, in hard acceleration, lift the front wheel. That isn't the same as stunt wheelies, out on the road, at excessive speeds. Perhaps there should be language that defines a "wheelie" as lifting the front wheel more than half its diameter off the road and riding with it off the road for more than, say, twenty five or so yards. If you've never had the frightening experience of seeing one on the road yourself, check out the videos shot by their buddies and pos... More About: Motorcycle
Card-Carrying Christians
2008-05-15 17:00:00 I posted this as a comment on another's blog and thought I should blog it here, the beauty of it is in its truth, as I see it anyway. I had been preparing some ribs for the smoker one Saturday morning and had blood from the meat on my hands when the Card -Carrying Christians again came knocking on my door. These aren't like other Christians I know, love and cherish as Family & Friends and whom I respect and they me. The Card-Carrying Christians I'm making reference to are the ones who travel in packs, moving door to door through a neighborhood handing out tracts like illegal aliens hand out hooker adverts on the Las Vegas Strip, and who pridefully display their Leather bound Gold Leaf Embossed Red Letter Edition Bibles containing only a select few of the original books and as if their status among their peers were based on the extravagance of their Customized Religious History Books. How motorcyclists won the right to feel the wind in their hair - and why dr
2008-05-15 16:00:00 On a Monday afternoon in June 1999, Richard Quigley was riding his Harley near Capitola, California, when a local police officer pulled him over for violating the state's helmet law. There ensued a half-hour debate with the officer and his supervisor about whether Quigley's headgear--a trucker's cap emblazoned with "United States Freedom Fighter" into which he had inserted a rigid plastic disc--qualified as a "safety helmet." Quigley, a 61-year-old with a ponytail and a ZZ Top style beard who directs Bikers of Lesser Tolerance of California and once ran for Congress on the Libertarian ticket, later called the encounter "interesting, informative and fun!" Richard Quigley's idea of fun, whether riding a motorcycle without a helmet or arguing with the police about it, may not be the same as yours or mine. But his enthusiasm for fighting California's helmet law, a battle in which he has been engaged for seven years "on the streets and in the c... More About: Wind , Hair , Feel
Motorcycle Helmet Laws - Ralph Nader or Sonny Barger
2008-05-15 15:00:00 J ust as Rock Hudson’s death brought the AIDS epidemic to the forefront of American consciousness, Ben Roethlisberger’s motorcycle accident without a helmet has brought brain buckets back into the pop topic tent. Big Ben’s record contract with The Steelers this past year has made it hardly arguable that for him at least, getting into a motorcycle accident while not wearing a helmet was an excellent career move. The subject is of particular relevance where I live in New Hampshire, as we are one of four states that have no helmet law. When speaking of motorcycle helmets, New Hampshire’s Nathan Hale paraphrase motto of “Live Free or Die” says it all, though to substitute one conjunction for another, “Live Free and Die” might be more appropriate. Bike Week, as it is called, the New Hampshire Lakes Region’s annual celebration of motorcycle culture, recorded its bloodiest season in 2006. Three died the previous year ... iPod Contents Recoverable Using iPod2Computer / CopyToy
2008-05-14 23:01:00 I have had problems with my 80GB iPod Video for some time now with it locking up or freezing. When it first started the freezing I would just let it stay on the table in the ON state until the battery was drained. After it was working again, I would listen to it through the docking station, until the next freeze up where I learned to leave it in the docking station where it would drain faster, thus becoming operational a little faster. Back when the laptop hard drive crashed I received a new Laptop. I installed iTunes on that laptop last evening only to find that Apple will not facilitate the restoration of your iPod to a new PC, even if the old PC was no longer available. Once I got the software installed on the new laptop, I was able to update the firmware in the iPod to the latest version which should stop the freezing. We'll see. I called Apple Support and made my way to a tech quickly where I explained the problems and he simply ... More About: Ipod , Contents

2008-05-14 17:00:00 A spiritual master received a learned man who came to gain deeper insight into the mysteries of life. The learned man watched the overflow until he no longer could restrain himself, "It is overfull, No more will go in!" he exclaimed. To this the master responded by saying ; "Like this cup, you are full of your own opinions and speculations. How can I show you anything unless you first empty your cup?" Michael Schumacher helps Schuberth Develop Motorcycle Helmets
2008-05-14 16:00:00 German motorcycle helmet manufacturer Schuberth recently announced they have struck a deal with seven-time Formula 1 World Champion Michael Schumacher to be a test developer of their latest helmet designs and have completed their first collaborative effort, dubbed the Schuberth Race. The new helmet features a variety of safety innovations that include a lightweight composite construction and a low-drag aerodynamic design. Since retiring from F1 in 2006, Schumacher has found a new outlet for speed in amateur motorcycle racing and seems to be getting pretty good at it. In addition to winning his first European pro-am race in only his second try on the track, Schumi has tested with Ducati and other German IDM (German superbike) teams where he has posted competitive lap times. Before his fledgling two-wheeled career, Schumacher was also a developer for Schuberth's automotive racing division during his F1 days. There was no word yet on when the Schuberth Race... Boutique Bikers, Social Darwinism and Culling the Herd
2008-05-13 17:30:00 Boutique Bikers, the phenomenon of recent years where a person walks into a Boutique Styled Motorcycle Dealership, plops down the signed Credit Application and purchases a New Motorcycle, along with all of the branded accoutrements of a Motorcycling Life Style. The Bikes I've Owned - So Far Anyway!
2008-05-13 16:00:00 T hese are the motorbikes/motorcycles I've owned through my riding life. At the age of Ten in 1968 the Fox Mini-bike found it's way home to me. We lived on a hill in the Ensley Highlands and must have circled that block a thousand time on this mini-bike. This set the stage for a life of riding enjoyment. In 1973 at age 15 I came into a new Suzuki 185 Enduro. My first real motorcycle. I was on this bike from sun-up to past sun-down most days. My friends Tim Cooper & Paul Hugley & I would ride the Power Line or Pipe Line access roads climbing hills and playing in the woods all day. In 1974, my brother-in-law Albert gave me his used Yamaha 360 Enduro. This beast would out run, out climb and out jump all the other bike around at the time. We bored it out to a 408 after 50,000 miles of hard riding and the beast was an amazing motorcycle. This is when I was racing Enduro's and Hare Scrambles. ... More About: Bikes , Owned
See No, Speak No, Hear No Evil Among Us
2008-05-13 15:00:00 A line from The Wallflowers Three Marlenas that I find disturbingly appropriate when taken in the context of Motorcyclist, as well as other overly sensitive groups. We as a group generally abide by this mantra and I think we do so at our own peril. This behavior is clannish at best and extends from the position of "Nobody criticizes my family" or "Don't say nothing about my Mama", and other such verbalizations of the insecure. Somewhere along the way, a lot of people have taken the position that a criticism is synonymous with an attack. If you say anything that is not complementary or neutral in nature then you are attacking them and they must respond in kind. If this sounds familiar it's the same culturally childish behavior we hear about from the radical Islamic fundamentalist who riot over damn cartoons or the shape of an Apple Store in New York. Political Correctness Revisited, Again

The Origins of modern Political Correctness and PC Speak are easily traced to the activities of a German Think Tank circa 1923. "Political Correctness started in a think tank in Germany in 1923.
