Portage Man's 'Trikeamunga' Motorcycle
2008-05-12 16:00:00 P ORTAGE - It was the spring of 2005, and Steve Stojic was dealing with loneliness and tragedy. His 15-year-old daughter, Alexis, was killed in an automobile accident a few months before, and he was in the midst of a divorce. Stojic, a mechanical engineer at Dana Corp., sought a diversion from the tumult in his personal life. So he went to what he knew. He started planning, drawing schematics. He purchased parts. He began to build. Now, after 1,500 hours of work, $15,000 in expenses and three years of near-constant focus on a project born of heartbreak, Stojic, 53, is the proud owner of a one-of-a-kind machine. "I call it Trikeamunga," Stojic said, primping and polishing his remarkable creation. "It came at a time when I needed something to keep my mind off of life-altering troubles, to keep me busy. "After a while it took on a life of its own." The trike is a conglomeration of two 1976 Honda CB-750 motorc... More About: Motorcycle , Portage
Jimmyisms and 30 Years of Friendship
2008-05-12 15:00:00 I have had the good fortune to have known and shared the last 30 years of my life with my Brother James. I met James while I was still serving in the Army and we have been friends since. James was born in Tennessee and raised in Birmingham and possess a wit and sense of humor that at times can double you over if your not ready for it. James is in the photo. Years ago, on a lazy Saturday afternoon I decided to spend some quality time cleaning some of my firearms. I lived in the country at the time and had the room to safely fire guns near my house into a back stop. I sat up a work bench outside and proceeded to tear down and clean some of the rifles and hand guns. A short while later my Brother James arrives and we stand around jaw jacking while I continue to clean and wipe. At the time I owned a few full auto weapons and James had been chomping at the bit to fire my 9mm MAC-10 on Full Auto. I retrieved it from the safe and ... More About: Friendship

Political Correctness Revisited
2008-05-09 17:00:00 Political Correctness is a poison being handed out daily and in toxic doses by its proliferators Political Correctness is a doctrine fostered by a delusional illogical liberal minority & rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous liberal press which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.positioned so far Left they would rather argue that they posses two Left Arms that admit to having anything resembling or categorized as right. The damage to all societies caused by the relentless and irresponsible spread of the PC doctrine will continue unchecked as long as WE tolerate it. Two Wheels Good - Four Wheels Bad - The Road Trip
2008-05-09 16:00:00 E ver since the internal combustion engine was invented, the road trip has offered a romantic allure for the traveler. But whereas journeying by car merely does the job, traveling by motorbike is associated with the most carefree of all road tripping experiences. Travel by motorbike offers many things a car deprives us of; first and foremost a much stronger connection with the landscape through which you pass. Motorcyclists often speak fondly of the sounds and smells of the outside world that they enjoy as they pass. This is something that their car driving counterparts tend to miss out on, being confined to the insides of their vehicle. Motorcyclists' tales of the road have often been shared with armchair travelers in the form of books, films and TV documentaries. One of the most famous motorbike trips to be enjoyed by the mainstream was undertaken by Argentinean-born revolutionary icon, Che Guevara. The image of Guevara's face is said to be the most reprod... What Is A Motorcycle and What Is It's History
2008-05-09 15:00:00 A A motorcycle or motorbike is a single-track, two-wheeled motor vehicle powered by an engine. Styles of motorcycles vary depending on the task for which they are designed, such as long distance travel, navigating congested urban traffic, cruising, sport and racing, or off-road conditions. In many parts of the world, motorcycles are among the least expensive and most widespread forms of motorized transport. The inspiration for arguably the first motorcycle was designed and built by the German inventors Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach in Bad Cannstatt (since 1905 a city district of Stuttgart) in 1885. The first petroleum-powered vehicle, it was essentially a motorized bicycle, although the inventors called their invention the Reitwagen ("riding car"). However, if one counts two wheels with steam propulsion as being a motorcycle, then the first one may have been American. One such machine was demonstrated at fairs and circuses in the eastern U.S. in 1867, b... More About: History , Motorcycle

Splitting Florida in Two Is Not A New Idea
2008-05-08 16:00:00 W ith the discussion of splitting Florida into two separate states going on here locally, I came across this while searching the cloud. Click the image for the full size view. I blogged about this yesterday with North Lauderdale wants to split Florida into two states It seems there's been division between South Florida and the rest of the state since the early years of Florida's Statehood. Florida's statehood happened March 3, 1845 and this article was published April 15, 1883. It's an interesting read with basically the same argument for division. Drivers on Cell Phones Kill Thousands, Snarl Traffic
2008-05-08 15:00:00 F inally, empirical proof you can blame chatty 20-somethings for stop-and-go traffic on the way to work. A new study confirms that the reaction time of cell phone users slows dramatically, increasing the risk of accidents and tying up traffic in general, and when young adults use cell phones while driving, they're as bad as sleepy septuagenarians. "If you put a 20-year-old driver behind the wheel with a cell phone, their reaction times are the same as a 70-year-old driver who is not using a cell phone," said University of Utah psychology professor David Strayer. "It's like instantly aging a large number of drivers." The study was announced today and is detailed in winter issue of the quarterly journal Human Factors. Traffic jams and death Cell phone distraction causes 2,600 deaths and 330,000 injuries in the United States every year, according to the journal's publisher, the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society. ... North Lauderdale wants to split Florida into two states
2008-05-07 18:01:00 S outh Carolina, South Dakota and ... South Florida ? Furious at what they consider the giving of more tax dollars than they get, North Lauderdale commissioners passed a resolution to divide Florida into two states: North Florida and South Florida. They'd draw the boundary line at Jupiter, the northernmost city in Palm Beach County and head south down through Broward and Miami-Dade counties and into Monroe County. "It's based out of frustration with the state Legislature ignoring the cities in South Florida," said North Lauderdale Commissioner Rich Moyle. "They don't really care too much what happens with South Florida." Commissioners want to get the word out, directing the city clerk to send copies of their April 29 resolution to state officials, plus all members of Congress and President Bush. They invited other South Florida cities to join them. Tonight Margate weighs the issue. The resolution apparently is mo... More About: States , Split
Marines Take On Motorcycle Madness
2008-05-07 17:00:00 M ay 6, 2008: Both the U.S. Army and Marine Corps have been having a growing problem with motorcycle accidents, outside of combat. Over ten percent of army and marine personnel own a motorcycle, and that number has increased rapidly since the invasion of Iraq. The reason for all this is the large amount of money many troops find themselves with when they come back from Iraq or Afghanistan. In combat zones, there aren't too many things you can spend your money on. Then there's the extra pay for being there. It adds up. If the trooper isn't married (and about half are not) many arrive back home with up to $50,000, or more, in ready cash. This leads to temptation, and that temptation often takes the form of a hot new bike. Many troops return jacked up on combat and all the fast road movement they experienced in Iraq or Afghanistan. Last year, 93 military army personnel were killed in automotive accidents. Most of these were soldiers, while 19 were marines. Whil... More About: Motorcycle , Marines , Madness

Germans Toast the Anniversary of Their Beer Purity Law
2008-05-07 14:48:00 The German 'Reinheitsgebot,' or beer purity law, started 492 years ago. Germans find reason to celebrate the drink even the mild-mannered Benjamin Franklin once called "proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy." Brewski. Suds. Cold one. Pint. Cerveza. Call it what you will, beer may be the world's most traditional beverage. First brewed in ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia over 8,000 years ago, it rates a mention in the epic of Gilgamesh, and its earliest chemical traces -- from 3500 BC -- have been found in the Godin Tepe in the Zagros mountains, in present-day Iran. Beer is a model internationalist. The German Reinheitsgebot, or beer purity law, celebrates its 492nd birthday on April 23. On Wednesday, Germans mark their own contribution to the history of beer, the Reinheitsgebot, or purity law, which strictly regulated the price and ingredients of beer at the start of the 16th century. It's an excuse for parties and brewery tours across Ger... More About: Anniversary , Toast , Purity

Louisiana Committee Approves Repeal Of Helmet Law
2008-05-06 19:28:00 L ouisiana should get rid of a law requiring adult motorcycle riders to wear helmets, a House committee voted on Tuesday. The House Transportation Committee 's approval moves the bill by Rep. Mert Smiley, R-Port Vincent, to the House floor. Smiley's bill would require bikers under age 18 to wear helmets, but not adults. Smiley and others argue that helmets can contribute to crashes, by limiting bikers' vision. Louisiana is one of 20 states that require all motorcyclists to wear a helmet, a statute that safety activists say saves lives in accidents. The measure moved forward despite opposition from James Champagne, former head of the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission, who mocked Smiley's position as "tantamount to believing in the tooth fairy." "If you get into a crash, that helmet may be the one thing that saves your life or saves you from a serious injury," Champagne said. Champagne was removed earlier this y... But the Hollywood has-been will still continue to ride with minimal protection, even having sustained some nasty scrapes after toppling off his Harley-Davidson. I was driving along and the bike slid from under me, and I skidded across the two lane highway. "I grabbed the bike hauled it up and got back on. I had to get to Los Angeles. Purchasing The Perfect Motorcycle Helmet
2008-05-06 16:08:00 You cannot choose a helmet based on its size or the material it’s made from alone. There are many things that need to be considered when purchasing motorcycle helmets. Sure, it’s probably possible to locate a helmet that is the right color or that is made from the type of material that will satisfy your safety concerns, but when it comes to “proper fit” it opens up a whole new can of worms. It is so important to consider the “safety factor.” Some motorcycle helmets are just not as safe as others and you should be aware of this. Some of the more popular motorcycle helmet manufacturers are Icon, Arai, Shoei, Suomy, Erex, Bell, HJC and Nolan. The majority of their helmets are approved by DOT or Snell. There are many other makers, but these are some of the better known companies. When it comes to safety there are two major concerns. One, how is your visibility? How is your peripheral vision? Can you see enough of the surrounding area to b... More About: Motorcycle , Perfect , Helmet
Ecstasy (MDMA) - The Key To Treating PTSD
2008-05-06 15:20:00 I have been battling with PTSD daily since the early 1980's. This report gives me hope that a better class of drugs and therapy's may be on the horizon. At last the incurably traumatized may be seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. And controversially, the key to taming their demons is the ‘killer’ drug Ecstasy An Ecstasy tablet. That’s what it took to make Donna Kilgore feel alive again – that and the doctor who prescribed it. As the pill began to take effect, she giggled for the first time in ages. She felt warm and fuzzy, as if she was floating. The anxiety melted away. Gradually, it all became clear: the guilt, the anger, the shame. Some doctors believe MDMA could be the key to solving previously untreatable deep-rooted traumas. For a hard core of PTSD cases, no amount of antidepressants or psychotherapy can rid them of the horror of systematic abuse or a bad near-death experience, and the slightest reminder triggers vivid...

1000 Horse Power Monster Bike
2008-05-05 19:52:00 The 1,000bhp Monster Bike . What do you get when you bolt a supercharged 1,000bhp engine, hitherto found under the bonnet of a four-wheel-drive monster truck, into a home-made motorbike chassis? Most people would probably say “trouble” or possibly “a ride in an ambulance”. But for engineer Nick Argyle, it seemed the obvious thing to do when tinkering with some bits in his garage one day. Argyle had built his own monster truck some years previously before selling the chassis but keeping the whopping 8.2-litre Mopar V8 engine. Lacking the space to build another truck, he decided that the ideal home for the supercharged powerplant would be a two-wheeler. Called the Rapom V8, the result is the most powerful road legal motorbike in Britain, with between 1,000 and 1,200bhp depending on the boost from the Littlefield supercharger. That makes the Bugatti Veyron, the fastest car in the world with 987bhp, look rather tame.... More About: Power , Horse
Europe's Top 10 Motorcycle Roads
2008-05-05 17:42:00 What makes a good biking road? Well, there's a saying among motorcyclists that driving a car is like watching a movie, whereas riding a motorbike is like being in one. And I guess it can all distil down to that: open to the elements and without a metal box around you, the feeling of vulnerability and danger merely serving to heighten the senses, you really do feel part of the world around you. A great biking road should have twists and turns so you can get your knee down and your heart rate up, certainly. If it's got a smooth surface and has good visibility, all the better. Add in an epic landscape and a real sense of adventure and you've got biking nirvana. 1. Theodore Roosevelt and the Spanish-American War
2008-05-05 17:08:00 Theodore Roosevelt , who arguably accomplished more than any other American man, called his experience in the Spanish -American War, “the great day of my life.” It was during his charge up Kettle Hill that Theodore Roosevelt’s leadership and confidence finally crystallized. He passed the test and emerged as a leader capable of ascending to the presidency. His actions during the war impart crucial lessons on manly leadership: 1. Walk the Walk. Theodore Roosevelt was a sickly child who grew up reading of ancient battles and warriors and longing to be one. He built up his body and as he got older started writing his own books about military feats. Yet he still longed to see action firsthand, and when the opportunity finally arrived, he wasted no time in seizing it. As soon as the Spanish-American War broke out, Teddy pestered the Secretary of the Navy for a commission in the army. He then sold his cattle ranch and some of his possessions, and took out life ...
