2008-04-08 14:48:00 This mornings Motorcycle Commute to Tampa was in 65 degrees f. with a strong wind out of the East and heavily overcasts sky's. The Flag in this shot is Giant Scale and the stiff breeze is standing out straight. Traffic moved well except for the cagers that have to ride three abreast on a 3 lane road as if they were flying in formation and holding everyone up. Not a LEO in sight throughout the commute this morning and only a few other Motorcycles on the road. The Rear View showing I'm between the cager clusters at the moment. Traffic also moved well on the Toll Roads even though there were several service trucks along the route working on the big-brother cameras and speed sensors. Yet another early spring Morning in FlatLand and the riding was good. Have a Great Day everyone, and Ride it like you stole it! LATER Technorati Tags: RilySi,Rid... More About: Commuting , Flatland

2008-04-07 14:44:00 This mornings Motorcycle Commute to Tampa was in 61 degrees f. with no wind and heavy fog. Traffic moved well for the conditions this morning on the surface streets as well as the toll roads. I didn't see another motorcycle on the road this morning and not a LEO in sight along the commute. It was a fine ride this morning as 90% of the road surface was already dry from the traffic, so there was basically zero road spray to deal with. It's Monday in FlatLand and Hey! Sonny Bono was Clubbed to Death
2008-04-04 18:09:00 Tragic rocker SONNY BONO was clubbed to death by hired hitmen, according to a stunning new tabloid expose. An investigator who has been researching Bono 's 1998 fatal skiing accident for the past decade claims top officials linked to an international drug and weapons ring feared the singer-turned-politician was about to expose their criminal acts - and so they had him killed on the slopes. Cher's ex-husband Bono's death was listed as a "skiing accident" with family and friends satisfied he died after colliding with a tree on the piste in Nevada in January 1998. But former FBI agent Ted Gunderson tells America's Globe that there's more to the tragedy than meets the eye, after studying the autopsy reports and other evidence. He says, "It's nonsense for anyone to now try to suggest that Bono died after crashing into a tree. There's zero evidence in this autopsy report... to show such an accident happened. Instead, there's powerful proof he (B... More About: Sonny , Death

2008-04-04 17:27:00 This mornings Motorcycle Commute to Tampa was in 72 degrees f. with light winds and scattered clouds. In other words; A gorgeous FlatLand Spring Morning. Traffic was light and moved really well for a Friday morning on both the surface streets and the Toll Roads as well. There was an FHP Cruiser running Radar on SR54 near the beginning of my commute but that was it for LEO's along the route this morning. No photos for this mornings commute as I was preoccupied with just enjoying the Motorcycle Ride for a change; have no fear the photos will return Monday morning. Safety Tips For Motorcycle Riders
2008-04-03 15:52:00 Here are some more safety tips for motorcycle riders that can help you enjoy a long & safe Motorcycling lifestyle! Make eye contact – never assume others see you. Always try to make eye contact with drivers who may be about to pull into your path. Read “vehicle language” – even when drivers, cyclists and pedestrians do see you approaching, they often misjudge your distance and speed. Don't rely on them. Watch out for left-turning vehicles at intersections – getting hit by an oncoming vehicle that's turning left is the most common type of motorcycle crash. Check behind when turning from a highway – watch your mirrors and make sure you have plenty of space behind. The drivers behind might not slow down for you. Flash your Brake Lights as vehicles approach from the rear, make sure they see you. Look out f... More About: Safety , Motorcycle , Tips , Riders

The Road To Motorcycle Safety
2008-04-02 20:14:00 Operating a motorcycle takes different skills than driving a car, but the laws of the road apply to every driver just the same. A combination of consistent education, regard for traffic laws and basic common sense can go a long way in helping reduce the amount of accidental motorcycle fatalities. For instance, something as simple as wearing a helmet with protective eyewear could drastically reduce your chances of being seriously hurt in a crash. In fact, a motorcycle rider not wearing a helmet is five times more likely to sustain a critical head injury. Try these additional tips from GEICO. They could keep you on the road to safety. On The Bike • Wear appropriate gear - Protective clothing, boots with nonskid soles and gloves can protect your body from severe injuries. Consider attaching reflective tape to your clothing to make it easier for other drivers to see you. • Follow traffic rules - Obey the speed limit and be a... The measure of motorcycles' MPG
2008-04-02 19:29:00 There's no standardized test for bikes' fuel economy, so where are figures coming from? Hint: the EPA emissions test is involved. Motorcycles get about 50 miles to the gallon. That's a general statistic trotted out by motorcycle manufacturers, government representatives, individual riders, your mailman. But specific MPG figures for specific models? That's been difficult to find. There are any number of reasons why motorcycle manufacturers have been loath to give actual MPG figures for actual models with any consistency. Bikes are already fuel-efficient, so differences in their MPGs aren't considered as important. Besides, actual MPGs vary wildly depending on how a bike is ridden. Even more significant, there isn't an industry wide protocol for motorcycle MPG testing. Unlike with cars, federal law doesn't require motorcycle manufacturers to perform fuel-economy tests or, if they do, to reveal their numbers, since bikes make up such a small percentage of o...

Rider education, driver awareness are better ways to prevent crashes.
2008-04-01 16:59:00 Government officials will tell you that motorcyclists make up 2% of the vehicles on the road and 10% of the fatalities, and they would be correct. That sounds like a major problem. But what they don't tell you paints a very different scenario. Motorcycle registrations have more than doubled since 1997, and new motorcycle sales have quadrupled since then. Surely, when the population is increased one must expect the crash numbers to climb as well. Simple statistics. The last time motorcycle deaths were as high as they are now was in 1986, when motorcycle registrations were slightly more than 5 million. In 2006, almost 6.5 million motorcycles were registered in this country. That's an additional 1.5 million motorcycles and the same number of fatalities. Maybe the motorcycle fatality rate isn't as out of control as some would like you to believe. When motorcycle safety is addressed, it almost always revolves around one controversial issue: helmet laws. All but t... More About: Education , Driver , Awareness , Crashes , Rider
When mandates are repealed, deaths and injuries increase.
2008-04-01 16:31:00 If you ride a motorcycle, you're 37 times more likely to die in a crash than someone in a passenger car. Motorcycle deaths have more than doubled in the past 10 years, and motorcycle accidents kill more Americans each year than all the nation's much higher-profile plane crashes, ship disasters, pipeline explosions and railway accidents combined. But motorcycles are economical, popular and — as many people who've been on them will testify — seductively fun to ride. So how do you reduce their toll without severely restricting their use? There's one proven method that the nation, regrettably, has moved away from. For years, the federal government withheld highway money from states that didn't require motorcyclists to wear helmets. Study after study has shown that helmets save lives: A University of Southern California analysis showed that helmets were the single most important factor in surviving motorcycle accidents. 2008-04-01 14:53:00 Another beautiful Spring Morning in FlatLand for the Motorcycle Commute to Tampa. 65 degrees f. when I rolled out of the Casa with a light breeze out of the East and scattered high clouds. Old Sol shined brightly as I headed East on SR54. Traffic moved very well on the surface streets and it was easy to slip up to the head of the pack. Traffic on the Toll Roads moved well for the first few miles then slowed to a stop & go crawl. The Traffic Slinky was two miles long prior to my exit and extended well past my exit so I jumped off the Toll Roads to Tampa Surface Streets that were just as congested as the Toll Roads. Florida Raptors Around the Casa
2008-03-31 18:41:00 I live just a Par-5 from the Gulf of Mexico here on the Nature Coast of Florida , and I'm fortunate to have several Raptors nesting & hunting around the Casa daily. We have both Bald and Golden Eagle nests within 100 yards of the Casa and they have found that catching & eating the local stray cats is easier than fishing the ponds. It's not unusual at all to see one of these magnificent creatures flying low overhead with a Cat hanging from their talons. We also have a wondrous variety of Owls that also hunt the cats, feral and domesticated. The Owls use a cool technique of sitting on top of the street light where you can't see them. Then they silently swoop down and grab the unsuspecting cats by the back of the neck and fly away with them. The Black Vultures likewise have taken a liking to all manor of small animals as well as partaking of the road-kill of turtles and other less fortunate beast....
