History Of Loi Krathong Festival

“Loi Krathong” is traditionally performed on the full moon night of the twelfth lunar month, which usually falls on some day in November. The floating of a ‘Krathong' – a banana–leaf cup – is intended to float away ill fortune as well as to express apologies to Khongkha or Ganga, the River Goddess. Some believe that the ritual is meant to worship the Buddha's footprint on the bank of the Narmada River, while others say that it is to pay respect to Phra Uppakhut, one of the Lord Buddha's great disciples. The Loi Krathong Festival is celebrated nationwide in Thailand, especially where there are rivers, canals or sources of water, with different unique characteristics. Wat Sangkat Rattana Khiri This temple is situated at the foot of Khao Sakae Krang. The very beautiful Buddha dates from Sukhothai period named "PhraMongkhonSaksit" is housed here. The ghost festival, known as Phi Ta Khon, is a masked procession on the first day of a three day Buddhist holiday known as Boon Pra Wate. This is an annual festival that takes place either in May, June or July in a small town called Dan Sai which is situated in northeastern province of Loei.      The masked procession is marked by a lot of music and dancing with the participants dressed up as ghosts and monsters.   (BangkokPost.com) - Samui island is declared disaster zone on Thursday after it was hit by heavy rain the night before. The rain caused flood in several locations. Water level on the main road is at 30 centimetre high. Hundreds of tourists are left stranded as weather condition prevented aircrafts from taking off since late Wednesday. Authorities are trying to pump water into river to alleviate the problem and prevent further flooding if rain comes again. Surat Thani provincial office sent 170 soldiers into the island to assist locals and tourists.
