They are also a very hot car these days aming celebrities: California's green governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, drives one, of course, as does Prince Charles in Britain. So do Brad Pitt, Cameron Diaz and Jack Nicholson.The price of adopting hybrid technology is more than with regular cars.In Paris, the price of a weekly hybrid rental was euro 474, compared with euro 313 for a regular car. In Rome it cost euro 634 compared with euro 445, while in New York, prices were $737 for a week long hybrid rental, versus $541 for a regular car.The base price, before taxes, on a 2008 Ford Escape ranges from $18,770 to $23,770. Mayor Greg Nickels touts Seattle's growth and progress, but how about some tough decisions when it comes to greening up our city and reducing landfills? We need to take environmental action to ban Styrofoam.Food is biodegradable; but much of what goes into Seattle's landfills is not. What Styrofoam and plastic containers? I say that Seattle ban the Styrofoam takeout cartons from any and all restaurants.A study by Andrea Kremer and Raquel Pinderhughes in 2003 found, "Although Styrofoam breaks into pieces easily; it will take five hundred years for one cup to dissolve. As for recycling, the same report says that when Styrofoam is recycled, it goes into products with a low level of recycling patrons.
