The Art of Marchander
2008-05-15 03:22:00 Hippos, wall hangings, fertility figures, statuettes representing days of the week, monkeys that hear, see and speak no evil, pirogue-shaped trays, woven baskets, djembes, rings and bracelets: all of these items and more are to be had at most any Senegalese market. It goes without saying that everything is of course made of the finest ... More About: Africa

Dying for Comfort: Backpacking Solo on the Thames River
2008-04-24 03:09:00 It was 3 AM and I was wide-awake, huddling under questionably clean sheets in a hostel bunk. There are usually lots of reasonable causes for insomnia in these grimy, youth-oriented lodgings: anything from blaring communal televisions, phone calls made from hallways, to 19-year old backpackers loudly professing their degree of inebriation. However, none of these ... More About: River , Solo , Dying , Backpacking , Comfort

Of Waterfalls and Water Cuts
2008-04-21 16:27:00 After the 15-year old mechanic came to our rescue with the small but essential part that was necessary for us to continue with our trip, we were on our way. A TAWDRY Affair?
2008-03-25 14:18:00 A Tawdry Affair ? Oscar Wilde once said, “What is bigamy? One wife too many. What is monogamy? The same.” One of the many things distinguishing me from my Muslim students is our very different views on polygamy. For me, a liberal feminist type educated in the west, the very notion of polygamy is chauvinistic, insulting and degrading ...

Reunification Day in Berlin: An Experience for Americans
2008-02-26 00:06:00 Photo by the author As a citizen of a country newly vulnerable and flirting with the idea of world domination, spending this last October 3rd, Reunification Day, in Berlin was a profound experience. The throngs milling around Brandenburg Gate and basking on the steps of the re-built Reichstag, looked and felt like the Fourth ... More About: Europe , Germany , Experience , Americans
Sick to Death of Bali
2008-02-20 16:00:00 Photo:Flickr/Tabea-Marie The air was dense and sweltering as I lay on a sweat-soaked sheet gazing forlornly through the mesh of a mosquito net, attempting to glimpse what lay beyond, just outside the door of my rented bungalow in Bali ’s art capital, Ubud. Delirious, writhing in pain, and folded neatly into a fetal position, I was furious that such beauty could lie only a few feet away. The sun was beginning to set behind the thick exotic foliage that lined the perimeter of the tiny rice field just beyond the tile porch. Even mosquitoes seemed to pirouette on the light evening breeze and as the sun knelt down, bats joined in their aerial acrobatics show, filling the sky in a uniform and graceful fashion like macabre starlings. But for me it was merely a reminder that an entire day was wasted in the city that I had long dreamed of; wasted to a nasty stomach infection. I had been careless. Despite having done my homework prior to leaving, forewarned not to drink the water or ice a... More About: Death , Sick

The Boat Trip
2008-01-27 03:39:00 Photo : Flickr/good_day I have loved boats since I was a little girl. My Boppa had a huge fishing boat (well it was huge to my 6-year old mind). It was an adventure every time we stepped onto the Muz Too. Since then, whenever I had a chance to get on a boat or take a boat instead of walking, I always, hands-down, chose the boat ride. Fast forward to my last trip to Florida with my family, when I heard we had to take a boat to the beach on the Gulf of Mexico, I was giddy with joy. …As the wind flowed through my long locks, I am brought back to my childhood sitting in the captain’s seat next to my hero. I smile as the sun peaks through my closed eyes. I reminisce of the times dolphins almost jumped right onto the deck of the Muz Too while Boppa was creating a playground of waves behind us. Those were the days… Fast forward further to my 21st year, walking through the hills of Cinque Terre with Jenny, Brian, Angie, and Jon, fellow students of mine. We were walking down this ...
