At last - Trinidad's Carnival is here again
2008-02-01 18:34:00
A gleeful masquerader. Photo source: www.mayarobeach.comIt's called the "Greatest Show on Earth". It's been named the number one Festival in the Caribbean. And well... it's hear. Come February 4th and 5th 2008, Trinidad and Tobago will be transformed into a place of revellry as masqueraders take to the streets to play a mas. The climax of Trinidad's Carnival lies in these two days, as from months before, momentum builds with many fetes (parties) taking place from as early as the previous December. Carnival isn't the only exciting event that takes place in Trinidad and Tobago, but people certainly do think about it whole year, and you really can't blame them. Carnival is an absolutely euphoric experience.Like most Trinis, Kerri Tucker, MACO Destinations Magazine's International Sales and Marketing Manager, loves "the infectious excitement surrounding Carnival, the adrenaline, the buzz, the music, and the sense of unity, the whole country coming together to celebrate... chippin...

Editor's Note - Here's to inspiration!
2008-01-24 11:50:00
I remember the days prior to becoming a publisher; I would buy architectural magazines and ogle at the breathtaking homes across the globe to collect ideas for that day when I would build my dream home on the beach. I believe this (expensive) habit gave birth to the inspiration that led me to launch my first magazine. I have just completed that dream home, and, I have to admit, the millions of magazines I?ve collected over the years influenced the architecture as well as the décor.Mark Johnson, featured on page 26 of the current MACO Caribbean Living issue, was evidently inspired by the late architect and stage designer Oliver Messel and used coral stone blocks, green-painted wooden trim and seamless open spaces to create one of the most beautiful homes I have had the pleasure of visiting in the Caribbean. This magnificent 12,000-square-foot house is a perfect ode to Messel, who designed homes in Mustique, including one for Princess Margaret, who happened to be his cousin.Photograph...

Caribbean Jazz in January
2008-01-08 13:04:00
If you?re visiting the Caribbean in January , it?s going to be a musical time. Throughout the year, numerous Caribbean islands host music and jazz festivals. In November 2007, we did a round up (click this link to view) for you?ll, and thought it?d be nice to remind you about what?s on the festival circuit for January. As it stands, there are four, major, music festivals in January - the St Bart?s Music Festival, the Barbados Jazz Festival, the Air Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival, and the Mustique Blues Festival (St. Vincent and the Grenadines).St Bart?s Music FestivalFrom January 11-23, the St Bart?s Music Festival kicks off, showcasing various genres, from classical to jazz. The festival is being marketed as opportunity to relax, take in the sites during the day, and get ready for nights of music and dancing. Located in the French West Indies, St. Bart?s makes for a relaxing holiday with its beautiful beaches (at least fourteen are not crowded, even in peak season), quaint villages...

A Unique Christmas - St Vincent and the Grenadines
2007-12-19 16:41:00
In St. Vincent and the Grenadines, if you find yourself humming the tune to ?Twelve days of Christmas ?, you?ll soon realise that you need to subtract three days from the song. From December 16th to 24th, nine mornings before Christmas, locals participate in the annual Nine Mornings Festival, which spans nine days of festivities from 4 a.m. to dawn.Christmas Vincy style is a unique celebration. While the islands share many of the similarities that define Christmas festivities in the Caribbean and around the world, this particular festival ensures that Vincentians have a distinctive story to tell. Locals wake in the early morning and take part in a multitude of activities including church services, fetes (parties), beach limes, street concerts or go to the capital of Kingstown to take in competitions that include singing and fun competitions such as speech making, beer drinking and banana eating, crying, laughing, ?ring play? games and story telling. Imagine dancing, carolling, and ta...

Back to 101
2007-12-10 22:15:00
Moving back into your newly renovated home evokes feelings of joy, relief that the wait is over, and absolute excitement. Then there?s the added fun of moving around furniture, changing the look and feel of rooms. We recently returned to our original office at 101 Tragerete Road, Port of Spain, Trinidad, and it?s fabulous. We occupied 101 prior to its refurbishment, and consider it home. It is really great to be back in our space.Last week we invited friends of Toute Bagai Publishing and MACO, and had a nice open-house warming to celebrate. It was really good to hear footsteps trampling all through the building, as people toured the rooms, and limed on the front porch upstairs where you have a full view of everything that takes place on Tragarete Road. Some of us stayed outside under the stars, listening to the Silver Stars steel pan side, as they serenaded us with Parang music (local Trini, Latin-flavoured, Christmas music).Toute Bagai Publishing bought 101 in 2004, and moved out l...

Jazz is in the air!
2007-11-29 21:22:00
Source: www.stluciajazz.org Jazz festivals are always ?happenin? in the Caribbean. From January to December, you can choose to go anywhere from Antigua to Barbados , St Lucia, Jamaica, Bermuda, Aruba , the Cayman Islands, Dominica, Tobago, and other islands, and somewhere on the calendar, you?ll find an event worth attending. While some shows stay true to the artform, showcasing strictly jazz musicians, some also invite non-jazz, R&B or other artistes in order to increase the festivals? appeal, and to satisfy the varied musical palette of patrons. Regardless, Caribbean jazz and music festivals have become popular with international audiences. Visitors from all over come together with residents to enjoy good music, great food, dancing in the sun, and Caribbean hospitality.Additionally, there are Caribbean-jazz festivals, like the October Jazz Festival in St Lucia and the Pan Jazz Festival in Trinidad. These involve Caribbean musicians and music. Here are some of the popular music fe...

Swimming with celebrity dolphins in the Bahamas
2007-11-19 13:36:00
Dolphin Encounters attraction on Blue Lagoon Island in the BahamasWriter Julia Stein got a once-in-a-lifetime experience recently when she visited Blue Lagoon Island in the Bahamas, and met several celebrities. If you?re starting to think of superstars, well they?re not really of the human form; they?re dolphins. In the current issue of MACO Destinations, Julia writes:?Coming right up to me, kissing my cheek and begging for a hug was a real-life celebrity. This was Jake, one of the dolphins that starred as Flipper in the 1996 movie of the same name, and he seemed as pleased as Punch to see me. Jake is one of the 19 Atlantic bottlenose dolphins at the Dolphin Encounters attraction on Blue Lagoon Island in the Bahamas. In fact, quite a few of the dolphins are famous, having also starred in Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen?s 2001 movie Holiday in the Sun and TV shows all over the world. Jake and his aquatic friends really seemed thrilled to have me, and the others in my small group, take par...

Our second place winner in the MACO Share your Caribbean experience competition is Liesl Harewood. Liesl incorporated her own style of writing to give us her view of Guyana , a land where she was born, but moved from at a very young age to live in Barbados, which she considers home.?Since my Guyana experience is rather limited, my recent trip there a few months ago was not through the eyes of a returning national, but a tourist whose experience I have captured in my entry," says Liesl.According to the Guyana Tourism Authority, the country is often described as:"the Caribbean gate to South America due to its unique location on the North Atlantic Coast of South America, bordered by Venezuela, Suriname and Brazil. It is where the virgin rainforest leads to the Amazon Basin, where the jungle is still unexplored, rivers uncharted and mountains unclimbed. With over 300 waterfalls, including one of the World's longest Single drop falls, the stunning Kaieteur at over 700 feet, over 800 spec...

Have you ever been to the French -Caribbean isle of Guadeloupe? Well Trudy Cox, the winner of MACO's recent "Share your Caribbean experience" competition visited there earlier this year, and in her winning entry (see below), she tells us all about her experience, the Guadeloupian culture of entertaining guests, great cooking, and beautiful beaches and architecture.Guadeloupe - Parlez-vous francais?by Trudy Cox (writing from Trinidad)I left Trinidad in February 2007 for a vacation in the French Island of Guadeloupe, also commonly and passionately referred to as ?Gwada? by the locals. It was a long overdue trip that was inspired not only by a need to escape the madness of Carnival but also to discover the enigma surrounding our European neighbour, which so many of us in the Anglo Caribbean forget exists. A trip that was supposed to be smooth sailing however, began with French police drama from the time I arrived at Pointe-a-Pitre International Airport. Not having an attestation d?acc...

Green fig souse
2007-09-25 15:30:00
If you?re vegetarian, your options for enjoying a good souse are limited, especially since the popular souse dishes are made of meat, usually pig parts or chicken feet. Key ingredients for souse include chopped pieces of the meat, seasonings, cucumber and lime juice. What makes a great souse is the seasoning; the longer you leave it to marinate, the better it tastes. And if you add a hot pepper to the mix, it really spices things up.For most Caribbean people, souse must have meat, but for vegetarians there?s an option. Here?s a recipe for green fig souse that will give you four servings. Note that souse is served cold.Ingredients - 10 green figs - cup chopped seasoning peppers - chopped chives - cup chopped chadon beni (cilantro) - chopped onion - 1 clove of garlic, chopped - 1 cup black olives - 1 cup green olives.
