Top diving spots in the Caribbean
2007-09-17 18:12:00 Picture the crystal blue water of the Caribbean Sea. Close your eyes, and dive in. Oh, and be sure to secure to your mask before you dive in. The Car ibbean Sea is a diver?s paradise. Some of the best diving sites are based in Aruba, Cayman Islands, Grenada, British Virgin Islands (BVI), Tobago, St. Lucia, Antigua, St. Lucia, US Virgin Islands, Belize, Turks and Caicos, Bahamas, Honduras, and Bahamas. Cozumel, Mexico is often noted in Caribbean diving site lists because of its proximity to and shared features of our waters. There are reefs stretching for miles with tropical fishes, sharks, and octopi roam, and sea wrecked ships once inhabited by pirates ? yes pirates of the Caribbean. Diving in the Caribbean offers a combination of the most dramatic vertical wall terrains, colourful coral and sponge composites, and habitats of small, tropical, reef fish and larger pelagic fish. You get face-to-face encounters with marine life such as black grouper, green moray, domesticised stingrays... More About: Spots

MACO Memories - Prada, Comedy and Caribbean Chic
2007-09-03 17:34:00 The next issue of MACO Caribbean Living (Volume 9 Issue 2). Available in bookstores from mid-September. Imagine the cast of The Devil Wears Prada crossed with Last Comic Standing. That would aptly describe my entire staff at Toute Bagai Publishing, which consists of an all-female team; so imagine 15 women in an office, not including Nasma in Jamaica and Kathy, our editor, who thinks our office is too noisy for even her, a state prosecutor! A smile on my face never fails to turn into a giggle when an unsuspecting subscriber walks through our doors to renew a subscription and finds Mari-Ange in midst of practising for her role in the latest stage production, or Parris regaling us with details of her life as a newlywed. I sit back and watch as the visitor to our MACO headquarters enters, pauses, and then joins me in a cackle. Our production trips for MACO are no different. And with every editor?s note I write, these memories come flooding back. In April, Kerri Tucker, photographer Cooki... More About: Comedy , Events , Cuisine
Caribbean Golf Courses - Tee ya there
2007-08-30 16:59:00 Sun, sea, and sand have long been the selling points of Caribbean tourism. Others include our sumptuous cuisine, melting pot of cultures, natural wonders, our constant energy, and golf. Golf courses have been growing across the Caribbean apace. From Barbados to the Bahamas, most golf courses are linked to luxury resorts. Not too long ago Destinations discovered five of the best, which are listed below with a few teasers. We?ve also listed a courses that continue to delight the most enthusiastic of golf players.1. Dominican Republic ? Casa de CampoDesigned by Peter Dye, Casa de Campo is one of the Caribbean?s most luxurious resorts. It is so large that guests are given a map and golf cart to get around. On the Teeth of the Dog course, seven holes are set adjacent to the sea, whereas the other 11 are confoundedly labyrinthine. The ?teeth? of Teeth of the Dog refer to a local nickname for the island's jagged-edged coral reefs, which are often in view along the track?s famed seaside ho... More About: Sports , Antigua

Andrew Zimmerman and Rachael Ray go cuisine crazy over Trinidad and Tobago
2007-08-24 19:17:00 It seems as if US food networks have gone cuisine crazy over Trinidad and Tobago. First, Andrew Zimmerman from the Travel Channel?s Bizarre Foods show featured several of Trinidad and Tobago?s dishes, which seem really normal to us Trinis, but seem bizarre in other parts of the world. One dish, the ever popular bake and shark, which is always available at Maracas Beach, got Andrew?s vote as one of his top ten favourite foods in the world! Andrew calls it a fish sandwich. We know it as fry bake with the best shark ever. Andrew discovers that Trinidad and Tobago?s diverse ethnic population, which includes Indian, African, Chinese, Creole, Spanish and French descendants, creates what he terms ?a cuisine unlike anywhere else in the world?. He went deep sea fishing, iguana hunting, conch shell hunting, and sampled souse, doubles and roti, and had loads of fun along the way. Now, the cooking guru everyone loves to love, Rachael Ray has joined in on the excitement, and will feature Trinida... How Hurrican Dean affected Caribbean tourism
2007-08-21 15:53:00 Many tourists often flee a destination when nature takes a turn for the worst, and it was no different with Hurricane Dean within the last week, as it had hundreds of tourists fleeing to the airports to escape its wrath. As the various, affected islands assess damages, and tend to citizens' needs, they're also assessing the impact on their tourism product. Travel Diva Ellen Creager, in a brief post of how Dean affected tourism sites in the Caribbean and Mexico , noted that several sites were spared. St Lucia, Barbados , St Kitts, Grand Cayman, Dominica n Republic, JamaicaShe reports that St Lucia's, Barbados' and St Kitts' tourism spots are in good shape and that their airports are open and electricity is on. Grand Cayman was spared a direct hit and "miraculously escaped with only 50 mile per hour winds". Similarly, the Dominican Republic had heavy rains and winds, but was spared major tourism damage. However, in Jamaica, the Kingston area and south coast were hit badly. Creage... More About: Tourism
Hurricane tips for tourists
2007-08-19 22:06:00 When you?re on vacation, the last thing you want to hear is that a hurricane is headed your way. Especially when you?re on vacation in the Caribbean, you?re busy thinking about fun in the sun, floating in the sea, trekking nature trails, sampling divine cuisine, and experiencing the duality of the Caribbean, from its luxurious offerings to simple delights. So when the words ?Hurricane headed your way? come into the picture, your first response is to scamper, and head straight to the airport. Travellers to St Lucia, Martinique, Dominica, Cayman Islands, and Jamaica have found themselves in this predicament, as Hurricane Dean bulldozes its way through parts of the Caribbean. Many have flocked to the airports to get flights out. Typically, tourists book flights and get out of the country before the hurricane can hit, because really, no one wants to spend their vacation in a hurricane shelter. Sometimes a hurricane may swerve and not hit the island after all. However, it?s prudent to tak... More About: Tips , Tourists , Cane , Tourist

Culinary tourism in the Caribbean
2007-08-07 23:25:00 Culinary tourism has emerged as the hottest niche for the travel industry, and many countries such as Canada, France, Italy, Scotland, and Spain have been positioning themselves as destination hotspots for travellers who love to spoil their taste buds. They?re on the right track, because according to the International Culinary Tourism Association (ICTA), food and beverages have an equal, if not more powerful, allure as museums, sports and shopping. One of a country?s greatest attractions is its culture, and every culture is known for its delicacies, whether it?s France for its escavêche (cold terrine of sweet water fish in wine and vinegar), Spain for its gazpacho soup, or Jamaica for its jerk. There is a definite connection between tourism and culinaria. Ever met a traveler who has never mentioned the various foods sampled on their last trip?Caribbean cuisine Some Caribbean islands have tapped into the culinary tourism market, and the region can boast of events such as:- ... Holidaying in Antigua
2007-08-05 18:00:00 You?d think that after years of visiting numerous Caribbean islands and experiencing so much of their undiscovered beauty, some of the memories may have dulled in my mind. Au contraire! I?ve got so many stories to share with you, but I?ll take them one at a time. So, let me tell you about Antigua (pronounced An-tee-ga).Antigua and its sister isle Barbuda are located in the middle of the Leeward Islands in the Eastern Caribbean. Barbuda is just 15-minute flight or 90-minute ferry ride from Antigua. To the south are the islands of Montserrat and Guadeloupe, and to the north and west are Nevis, St. Kitts, St. Barts, and St. Martin.Like Antigua?s Department of Tourism says, ?the beach is just the beginning?. Antigua is one of the most beautiful places to visit for vacation. It?s got historic sites such as Betty?s Hope sugar mill, St. John?s Cathedral and Nelson?s Dockyard. Island hopping for content
2007-08-02 13:56:00 For the past eight years, people keep asking me the same question over and over again. ?Aren?t you afraid you?re going to run out of content?? Let me answer that question by giving you an idea of what we have been up to lately. The MACO team started out the year island hopping to territories we had not yet featured. Photographer Cookie Kinkead, writer Kerri Tucker, and I explored the Turks and Caicos Island s, which will be featured next issue. We then ventured to the Cayman Islands, where the buoyancy of the people is inspiring. In 2004, Hurricane Ivan, a category-five storm, caused catastrophic damage to Grand Cayman. A quarter of all buildings on the island were reported to be uninhabitable. But there is still plenty to celebrate.Architect John Doak has devoted much of his career to celebrating Cayman Island style. Born in Scotland (his accent is unmistakable), Doak has made the Caymans his home and has designed some of the country?s most intriguing dwellings. And he has improved h... What MACO means
2007-07-30 15:12:00 Caribbean Creole has spawned many words that are the backbone of expression in the region. Creole is a bonafide dialect of its own, and like many things of the Caribbean, its makeup samples parts of various cultures and languages. For example, in Trinidad , Creole has roots in various languages including, African, Hindi, French and Spanish ? which brings us to how we got our name, MACO.MACO (mako) is a verb. It?s a French Patois word, which means ?to mind other people?s business?. We like to call it exclusive peeping. After all, month after month, we venture into people?s properties ? with their permission of course ? to explore the beautiful homes or hotels they?ve created. We get some divine recipes from some of the best chefs in the Caribbean, and we discover exotic travel destinations that can literally take your breath away. Then, we come back to give you the scoop, and so the MACOing continues. Some time ago, Caribbean Beat wrote a short article about us, and we think it?s a fit... Cuban, eclectic architecture
2007-07-25 21:27:00 Havana?s Eclectic ism.?Whilst this is a term rather too frequently used by Cuba n architectural historians striving to explain the luxuriant eccentricities of Havana's architecture to bewildered visitors, it is in fact an accurate description; many of the buildings outside the Historical Centre are capricious combinations of a wide variety of building styles and decorative detail. From Neo-Baroque to Neoclassical, Art Nouveau to Art Deco, Hollywood Hacienda to Modernist, there are few early twentieth- century building styles not represented in Havana , and local architects often combined several of them within one building in a merry extravaganza of decorative confusion.Even where they might themselves have been inclined towards a more conservative approach, the designers were overruled by their clients. Havana's richer residents liked to pick and choose decorative detail at whim, so that in a number of mansions in Vedado, which used to be one of the most exclusive residential areas... Pirates of the Caribbean - Pirates Week Festival: Cayman Islands
2007-07-20 02:05:00 Johnny Depp may have now coined the image people have in their heads when they hear the phrase pirates of the Caribbean . But in the Cayman Islands, people think of pirates landing on their island. You see, every year, the Cayman Islands hosts the Pirates Week Festival. Attracting locals and foreigners, the festival started off in 1977. In the current issue of MACO Destinations, writer Catherine MacGillivray found herself in the midst of the excitement and gave us tonnes of information about the event. The festival spans 11 days and includes fun activities like mock pirates landing, the Cayman Islands governor being taken ?hostage?, a float parade, fireworks and street dances. Onlookers also get in on the fun, dressing up as pirates. Pirates Week takes place in November, and starts at Little Cayman. Ideas for a different sort of Caribbean vacation
More articles from this author:2007-07-19 04:21:00 posted by Neysha SoodeenThe smaller islands of the Caribbean , such as the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, the US Virgin Islands, St Vincent and St Kitts, are fast becoming more and more popular with tourists. These may seem to be mere rocks in the sea, but they offer travellers surprising blends of romance, adventure, seclusion, excitement, rustic and luxe. The current issue of Destinations unintentionally focuses on the smaller islands. For this issue, Kerri, Cookie and I visited the fabulous, one-of-a-kind Amanyara Resort in the Turks and Caicos. Sought out by the rich and famous, the Aman offers utter calm in pristine surroundings. The resort is a good hour away from the capital and the entire hotel appears to float on a pond of water.Eden Rock in St Barth, one of my favourite places in the Caribbean, is also quiet and stunningly gorgeous, with a spectacular view from every room. The best part of this boutique hotel, however, is that it?s a minute?s walk to the trendiest spot in the ... More About: Ideas , Vacation , Sort , Diff 1, 2, 3, 4 |
