Teenagers getting high
2007-12-08 11:42:00
Verdant vineyards and hot air are making this December in the desert quite memorable. So far the excellent weather has brought rainstorms and the welcome cool that follows. Mornings have been ideal, and these three teens actually got out of bed and made me coffee following the first 5.00am wake up call. Here we are at about 1500 ft.

River Rafting / Orange River / Augrabies Falls National Park
2007-11-26 23:31:00
River Rafting - Orange River - Augrabies Falls National park River rafting on the Orange River at the Augrabies Falls National Park must be the best half day river rafting trip on the Lower Orange River. The amount of entries for “river rafting” is huge and from the 12 years of operating these river rafting trips all the Orange River am now confused, as any web surfer must be, as to exactly where and when these Orange River rafting Trips take place. It seems that every adventure operator visiting the Orange River has to include some sort of Orange River Rafting trip in their itinerary. There are now so many itineraries which include Orange River rafting, about 6 of these even advertise the river rafting at Augrabies. None of them have had a river rafting trip in the Augrabies falls National Park for the past year. All of the overland outfits dont even operate trips to include the river rafting at Augrabies Falls. They all seem to follow like sheep the sizzle that river rafting o...

Augrabies Rafting
2007-10-30 13:16:00
“The Rush” may well be happening again soon. I am so glad that it is not me that has had to go through the whole contractual obligation and paperwork saga. With the backpackers being restored to it’s future glory, prospects out here on the perimiter seem to be improving. Must be all the rain bringing the blessings…..

Dam Orange
2007-10-11 23:41:00
Looks like the Dam is being mainstreamed as a hydro-electric project which will help for the power outages. Whatever the reason, we need to do this soon. Hopefully we can get the standing waves into the design as well…..see the earlier “Millenium Solution” post for some additional possibilities.

School’s out
2007-09-20 00:38:00
It’s that time of year again, school holidays and time to escape to the sunshine. Guaranteed out here. Today we had 36 degrees so can officially declare the winter a thing of the past. The river is at it’s lowest in year and Die Gemsbok reports on the drastic state of the water, a ph of 8.4. Not very good for anything.

Facebook and Web2
2007-09-19 00:51:00
So it seems that to keep on top of things a place like Facebook adds an excellent dimension to this blogging thing. Although I only have six friends so far, I am having fun adding things to it. The Outventures IT department has finally kicked into gear and hopefully the site they are working on will be ready for the season.
Lower Orange River Conservancy
2007-09-07 13:48:00
Breaking with the finr tradition of leaving the public in the dark, an excellent meeting was held in Kakamas this week introdicing us to the Lower Orange River Conservation Planning Initiative. The plan is grand and realistic and we can all look forward to some great developments out here in the future. So far the best name for the South African side I believe is “Greater Namaqualand” but has yet to be broadend to the Greater Namaqualand Transfrontier Peace Park. Question is, what is a good name for this?

Kuierfees
2007-08-28 00:36:00

Hot and High
2007-08-14 00:19:00
Got wings, can fly! Today my instructor gave me a test which I passed. He then climbed out and with the loss of his weight, I launched off the ground and shot up to 3500 feet without even burning! What a rush. So that is what I have been doing for the past while…….getting wings. Soon to follow will be my own balloon and then if anyone brings along a whole lot of gas, we can all get high. “Usually he was insane, but he had lucid moments when he was just stupid.” Heinrich H

Millenium Solutions
2007-06-21 22:31:00
Millennium Solution s (If you get my DRIFT) Andrew Hockly Location Lesotho, South Africa and Namibia downstream of the Lesotho Highlands Water Scheme, Lake Gariep and the Van der Kloof developments. Rivers affected are the Senqu – Garieb continuum and inter basin transfers to the Tugela, Vaal and Great Fish Systems. Outline There is an immediate opportunity with the implementation of a number of Low Flow Guaging Weirs and proposed Irrigation Diversions on the lower Gariep (Orange River – South Africa / Namibia.) By redesigning the downstream bed profile in order to create standing waves and incorporating this with step pools / vortex weirs, larvaecide applications could be more effectively administered. Monitoring and research whether remote or local would be improved. Tourism opportunities and destinations would be created. The concept is repeatable globally. Aims To reduce the effects of the Blackfly Plague To monitor toxic spills, organophosphates included. To assist in es...

Tcta, the 3 Plagues, Eskom and my DRIFT
2007-06-01 02:51:00
Tcta is evidently a “new word for water” but in our experience it has come to encompass plagues, toxicity and serious health issues. Essentially, the Lesotho Highlands Water Scheme together with Eskom’s control of both Lake Gariep and the Vanderkloof Dam has resulted in the Orange River, previous sole source of potable water for an entire province, as well as the southern portion of Namibia, has been allowed to rot. Essentially, the imposed flow transactions have been so minor over the past three years, that for the first time in history, the water from the Orange River is no longer safe human consumption. This is affecting all of the riparian subsistance herders, among the poorest of the poor in Southen Africa and includes the following communities: Richtersveld Nama’s; Namaqualand herders from Gudaus, Witbank, Klein Pella, Pella, Onseepkans and the Riemvasmaak Community in the Area below the Augrabies Falls. Advice given has been not to immerse oneself in t...

Kalahari enters the blogosphere
2007-05-31 20:25:00
Greetings from out here to all in there. This is the #1 test blog of the adventure crew in the far Northern Cape. Seems it may take a while down the copper cables we still operate on so will press some buttons and see what happens next. Watch this space for a progression of river, desert, surf and soul “blogs” currently under construction. Thanks
