Right from a young age my imagination was piqued by the thought of travel to different parts of the world.I used to scour through the world atlas in my bedroom wondering what life might be like in the different countries that I was viewing.I suppose it was inevitable that I decided to join the British Merchant Navy on leaving school, so that I could fulfil my ambition to travel. After 16 weeks of training and having qualified with the grand title of “deck boy” the world was my oyster at the age of seventeen.I shall never forget the excitement of being told that I was flying to Antwerp in Belgium to join my first ship, a mini bulk carrier. In the years that followed I got to see many parts of the world on many different types of ship and still think back with wonder at some of the sights I saw.Being at the wheel of a 350,000-ton Super tanker coming out of Lisbon Harbour is one moment I will always cherish.Standing on the wing of the Ships Bridge, in the middle of the night on looko...

Coconut Airways.

Picture courtesy of www.bigphoto.com Recently a commercial airliner took off with one of it’s four fuel tanks containing a 20 percent mixture of coconut and palm oil, the first ever usage of biofuels in the airline industry. The Virgin Atlantic 747 flight flew from London to Amsterdam and the boss of Virgin Atlantic; Sir Richard Branson hailed it as a breakthrough for the airline industry.Environmentalists insist that this is just a cynical publicity stunt as food prices are being pushed up in many developing countries by the diversion of staple food crops to the bio fuel industry. In many areas of the world, unique habitats and forests are being destroyed and converted into palm plantations in order to feed the increasing demand for palm oilThe use of bio fuels needs to be thoroughly examined to see what impact increasing demand will have on the environment and food prices. Whether a publicity stunt or a major breakthrough, the aviation industry is here to stay and if new technolo...

Cruises not just for the wealthy
2008-02-20 16:57:00
Picture courtesy of Interactive affiliate networkToday’s modern Cruise liners come equipped with a fantastic selection of amenities, and offer superb shopping and entertainment options as well as a huge choice of onboard leisure facilities. Most people assume that Cruises are only for the very rich, or are a once in a lifetime experience, but they are actually extremely good value for money taking into account the food, onboard activities and entertainment all included in the price.A wide choice of Cabins are available on most Liners, from luxury staterooms with outside balconies, to interior cabins for those on a lower budget, the choice is huge. Today’s modern Liners come equipped with stabilisers that keep movement to a minimum and there are lots of over the counter remedies available if seasickness is a worry. As a last resort there is even an injection available from the ships Doctor which will cure any ill affects. The Caribbean tends to be the most popular Cruise Destinati...

Winter Wonderland in the UK
2008-02-19 16:17:00
It has been really cold here in the UK these last few nights and I woke up this morning to a magical looking winter wonderland. There is no snow, but all of the trees and shrubs are coated in a brilliant white hard frost.Winter seems to have come late and although there has been little snow, it is taking time to lose it's grip.My wife and I are looking forward to the summer coming and another trip to Greece in the middle of September is looming.Spring is just around the corner and no doubt, for those of us living in the Northern Hemisphere we will be planning our Holidays for the forthcoming summer.Worldwide Destination Guides for trip planning

Lanzarote or the Moon!
2008-02-02 12:36:00
As promised in an earlier post here are some details of our recent trip to Lanzarote. The Island has a good climate throughout the year and winter temperatures rarely fall bellow 70 degrees farenheit. There can be some wind as it is a fairly exposed Island being stuck out in the Atlantic Ocean some 70 miles off of the coast of Africa.Lanzarote has avoided the over crowded development and beer swilling culture of many of the larger Canary Islands and has it's own distinctive character, with dramatic volcanic landscapes in the South of the Island and a greener more verdant side in the North. Most of the resorts are low key small complexes, which come well equipped for the holidaymaker and the coastline offers some lovely beaches with varying degrees of black and yellow sand.Cesar Manrique (1919-1992) was born on Lanzarote and his artistic influence can be found all over the Island. He was given a free hand by the council to create whatever he wanted and created artistic marvels out of...

Ticketless flight booking an innovation
2008-01-07 17:14:00
Picture courtesy of www.bigphoto.com Booking Travel online is getting easier than going to the travel agents nowadays and it is much more convienient, this article describes the innovative process of ticketless flight booking. Most of us have probably been through the unpleasant process of standing in a huge queue waiting to check in for our flight abroad at some time in the past. There always seems to be an unruly family ahead of you, full of noisy screaming kids, or the passenger who has too much weight in their case, holding the rest of us up while the problem is resolved.I recently booked a budget flight to Lanzarote with a company called Jet2.com who offer budget flights from some UK airports and they operate an innovative ticketless check in system.I booked my flight online and was able to reserve our seats prior to our departure through a simple computer interface, simply click on the seats available and bingo they are reserved for you. Just print off a copy of your seat conf...

Lanzarote forthcoming visit.
2008-01-05 15:09:00
Well the decorations have finally been taken down and put back up in the loft for another year, now it is all downhill till spring. Fortunately my wife and I who are not lovers of the British winter have booked a trip to Lanzarote in the Canary Islands at the end of January.Having never visited the Canary Islands before we are looking forward to getting some warm sun on our bodies and exploring the dramatic volcanic landscapes, barren terrain and beautiful beaches that this Island has to offer. We decided not to book this holiday through a brochure as all we could find were Hotels with kids clubs in large noisy resorts and did not think it would be a peaceful relaxing holiday for us if we booked this way.Searching online we found a NICE BUNGALOW in a small complex nestled in the quiet resort of Playa Blanca, which is on the southernmost tip of Lanzarote and not too developed. A lot of property owners in the Canaries advertise online and I thoroughly recommend this method if like me y...

2007-12-01 17:44:00
Well Christmas is nearly upon us once again and all we can look forward to in the Northern Hemisphere is those long cold winter nights and very short daylight hours. This time of the year a lot of people plan travel to escape the winter blues and head of to sunnier climes for a break.Fortunately my wife and I are lucky enough to be going to the Canary Islands in January and are looking forward to a winter break and some sun on our skins.I would like to wish anyone travelling over the Christmas break a safe journey and enjoyable holiday and of course a Merry Christmas to you whether you are travelling or not!

Flamingo spotted in Greece!
2007-10-29 15:38:00
It took my wife and I a long time to work out what this bird might be! Looking at the shape of the beak we found out that it must be a juvenile Flamingo . We only saw it for two days and then it dissapeared so I assume it was on its way to Africa for the winter. I wish I was!

Rhodes Town Visit
2007-10-15 21:12:00
Rhodes town is a fascinating place to visit on one of the more cosmopoltan of the Greek Islands. The Old town is well worth a visit, it is contained within giant fortified walls and surrounded by a moat. Inside there are a maze of alleyways and broader streets where you can view some fascinating architecture going back hundreds of years. There are a host of places to visit. The Grand Masters Palace is well worth a visit as is the Magnificent Suleiman Mosque and the Jewish Synagogue and Museum. The New town is modern and has lots of fasionable shopping outlets and is a complete contrast to the Old Town .The Harbour area is very picturesque and of course is one of the famous landmarks of Rhodes. All in all if you a going to Rhodes then Rhodes Town should not be missed!

Greece here we come again!!
2007-09-23 16:45:00
My wife and I are off to Rhodes for a fortnight at the end of September 2007 and can't wait.We last visited Rhodes 10 years ago and really enjoyed ourselves in a small resort caled Haraki about 10 miles south of Lindos. We are staying in the same resort again and it will be interesting to see if has changed from the small quiet resort that we remember. We booked with a Greek specialist company called Kosmar and have been travelling to Greece regularly with them for a number of years. They have always offered excellent value for money and the accomodation has always been of a good standard. The reps in general have been very useful (only one bad one) although we very rarely have much to do with them as we like to be independent and do our own thing. We are staying in the Haraki beach studios and I shall be posting a review of them and the resort in general on our return on my Greek Islands and Mainland message board (Link on the right of the page called Grecophile).Looking forward to a ...
Abandoned in Greece a dogs tale
2007-09-14 15:52:00
My wife and I arrived in the resort of Finikounda on the Peloponnese peninsular Greece in the middle of May 2006 looking forward to a nice relaxing holiday. We arrived at our studios to be met by a really friendly looking Labrador retriever female dog that was rather fat and pregnant looking. but very affectionate and being the animal lovers we are we gave her a lot of attention. The following morning we found the dog outside of our door, with her tail wagging and an expectant look on her face, so all three of us shared breakfast together. I had assumed up till then that the Hotel next door must have owned the dog and decided to find out more about her as the dog had attached herself to us and followed us around the resort wherever we went, much to the delight of the locals. Our holiday rep told us that the dog was a stray and had been around the village for a few weeks scavenging from bins and fending for herself and that the last occupants of our studios had been feeding her and had ...

Greece is my addiction
2007-09-11 16:53:00
There is something about this fascinating country that has me returning year after year and like an addict I need my twice-yearly fix.The feeling of space and not being hemmed in by the multitudes is certainly a tonic for the soul in this large unpopulated country.I try to put my finger on what it is that keeps drawing me back here rather than visit another different part of the world .for my holidays.Perhaps it is the majesty of the many mountainous landscapes that inspire a feeling of awe and spiritual fulfilment within me every time I visit.Or is it the Greek people who make you feel so welcome with their warm and open ways. Apparently it is part of Greek culture to be kind to strangers.Sitting in a beachside Taverna looking out over a crystal clear turquoise Sea to the distant haze shrouded mountains, whilst enjoying a delicious meal accompanied by a refreshing glass of retsina or two, certainly fills one with warmth and contentment. Have you ever noticed that if you bring rets...

Online Travel Booking
2007-09-10 16:37:00
Have you ever wondered how the online travel booking websites can offer such discounted rates for hotels.Because of the huge volume of hotel bookings that the travel operator processes, they are able to use this buying power to negotiate special rates with the individual property owners. It is a similar scenario to the supermarket chains who because of their buying power can sell baked beans much cheaper than the poor corner shop down the road as they get a better price because of the volume they purchase. Most online travel agents will guarantee that the Special Internet Rates are the lowest that you will be able to find. You may say to yourself "What's the catch?" as these cheap rates are bound to raise some scepticism. The answer is that the only requirement is that you pay up front using your credit card. So booking a room at these discounted rates gives you both savings and security. Can you beat that! You may decide that you don't want to book online, this is not a problem as on ...

High Street Travel Agents, the days are numbered
2007-09-10 07:51:00
By: CapybaraWith the massive increase in online shopping one has to wonder if the traditional highstreet travel agents will eventually decline in numbers or fade away completely over time.Nowadays you can plan your own holiday itinerary from the comfort of your own home. Everything the traditional high street travel agent could do for you, from searching for flights, car hire, hotel bookings and holiday packages can be done from one web site by anyone who is reasonably competant on the Internet today. With up to date modern technology todays travel websites come equipped with comprehensive destination guides and fast search booking engines linked to many travel retailers world-wide so searching out and costing a trip is an easy thing to do and Internet rates are invariably cheaper than high street retailers as there are no overheads to pay.A considerable number of people are still concerned about security online as there is so much fraud going on out there. The cardinal rules for onli...
