Birdsong Trail Rides: From Brenda's Journal
2007-12-29 18:50:00
During our travel across Tennessee, Bob Frost has assisted us in finding accommodations. One of the places he helped us to find is Birdsong Trail Rides. They are located south of Camden, TN in hill country. What a peaceful, beautiful place. There are great accommodations for campers of all kinds. You can find more information about their facility at www.birdsongtrailride.com. Bill really enjoyed talking with Mr. Fowler about some of his adventures and his livestock. They also have some very interesting and unusual livestock. If you like horses, nature and the great outdoors this is the place to visit. read more

Vet Visit
2007-12-22 01:36:00
Friday, December 21, 2007Today Dr. C. Maben Thompson D.V.M. in Crossville, Tennessee came out to check Blackie. Our hostess, Jennifer Parsons, arranged the visit for us. Since he began to exhibit signs of soreness in his left hindquarter/leg, we have been very cautious and observant of the way he travels. He has not exhibited any sign of difficulty or lameness while being ridden. He only seems to be a little sore when resting. Dr Maben thoroughly examined Blackie and found no sign of lameness or other problems. He injected him with Legend which is a drug that helps maintain joint health. Dr. Maben commented that Blackie's overall condition, and his cardiovascular health was better than many of the horses he examines. When the exam is done, we turn Blackie loose in the pasture and he takes off at a run. No sign of lameness there. We will be adding a supplement of MSM to his diet to further assist with joint health. This is the most difficult part of the journey. The shoulders of the...

The challenge of staying warm and dry.
2007-12-21 22:28:00
The weather is becoming more and more gloomy. They say it is going to rain this afternoon. It’s a good thing that we will be inside tonight and Blackie will have a nice place to rest.  I know the rain is needed here and even though it makes things harder for us, I thank God for sending it. I hope that when it is going to rain or snow we will have a dry place to sleep from this point on. Our trailer is just a stock trailer and can be rather wet inside when it rains. Our bedrolls get damp and it is hard to get warm when trying to go to sleep. Many mornings we wake up to a wet ceiling, dripping on our heads. We have a small electric heater and a propane heater. The propane heater doesn’t do much to fend off the cold. Sometimes it makes the condensation worse and we cannot sleep with it on. The electric heater is ok, but in order to warm our bunk we have to suspend it from the ceiling of the trailer, close to us. It helps to have electricity too, but that is not always...

Route From Nashville
2007-12-16 13:48:00
We are leaving Nashville today. Our route will follow 70S/26. Some of the stops we will make are: Alexandria, Smithville, Sparta, Pleasant Hill, Crossville. We will need to stop for 2-3 days rest in Crossville. Then on to Westel (Rockwood area). The next 20 mile segment will leave us at the intersection of Eblen Cave Rd. and Hwy 70. After that we may be able to make it to Boxwood Hills in the West Knoxville area. We haven't figured out how to get through Knoxville yet. That is where we most likely will be for Christmas. I will post another segment on our route when we reach Knoxville. We hope to be able to find shelter on our route. Especially when it is raining or the temperature drops below freezing. Lose A Shoe Meet Some Amish: Huntingdon Part 2
2007-12-15 01:39:00
Randy brought us over to his his Amish friends so Bill could reshoe Blackie. We had been looking for Drill Tech/ Borium for quite some time, and the shoes Blackie had on needed to be replaced. Without Borium the shoes will not have the grip needed on pavement or concrete. In this video Bill removed the old shoes and prepares the hoofs. read more

Huntingdon, Tennessee - Lose a Shoe, Meet Some
2007-12-14 02:16:00
Bill nearly made it to Huntingdon when Blackie lost one of his shoes. Luckily Randy, who we had met in the previous town at a restaurant saw Bill and bought us to him. He then brought us to some Amish folks that had a facility to shoe, and more importantly the Drill Tech Bill needed. (Drill Tech is used on steel horseshoes to provide traction and a much more resistant surface.) read more

Thank You W. Bailey Allen, Jr D.D.S. & Arthur L. Cole D.D.S Endodontist
2007-12-11 23:57:00
One of Bill's back teeth have been bothering him really bad and we finally convinced him to go get it checked out. W. Bailey Allen , Jr D.D.S. was the first dentist to see Bill. He had a look at Bill and found that his tooth was cracked. The visit was on very short notice and was free of charge. His recommendation was that Bill get a root canal and a dental crown. Mr. Allen is a Tennessee Walking Horse breeder and shower. The second dentist to look at Bill was Arthur L. Cole D.D.S Endodontist, and is a quarter horse enthusiast. Mr. Cole rearranged his scheduled patients to perform the root canal, which Bill desperately needed to relieve his pain. His donated services are much appreciated. Last but not least, we would like to thank our good friend Bob Frost. His continued support has been phenomenal.  The dentists Bill saw today are acquaintances of Bob's. Both dentists are located in Clarksville, Tennessee. read more

Almost to Nashville
2007-12-06 15:31:00
Hello, This is Dallas, the guy who is filming video of this whole adventure, hoping to make something interesting out of the 80 hours of footage I have accumulated..  Bill calls me "The film guy". I have been amazed at how much this story has touched  people.  I've read emails from all over the country and even from soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan.   Th ere is even a fellow in India who is so thrilled and happy to have met a "real cowboy."  Your kind words and offers for places to stay have lifted their moods tenfold, givine further purpose to their mission. They were down to their last $20 when all of a sudden the story broke on Associated Press and you gave what little you had to keep this rolling.  America is an amazing land, but it is the people that reperesent the true Spirit of our wonderful country.  Your generosity is astounding.   Who needs corporate america when we have ea...

Route in Tennessee
2007-11-25 15:42:00
I think we will be traveling on Highway 104 until we run into Highway 70. We will follow Highway 70 into Nashville. We hope to be in Nashville by the 11th of December. I have been trying to answer e-mails, but it seems that many of the connections I can get access to have that port blocked and itmakes it impossible to send and answer. I hope everyone has had a safe and wonderful Thanksgiving. We will be posting new stories and videos as soon as Jon is able to get the new server up and running. Please bear with us, the transfer of information takes a while and we only have the one laptop which is old and slow. Thanks again for all of your support Brenda read more
