Ton Sai
2007-12-28 18:50:00
Ton Sai is a beach near Krabi in Thailand, offering a combination of inexpensive accommodation and great rock climbing routes that make it popular with both backpackers and climbers alike. Compared to neighbouring Rai Leh and Ao Nang it's relatively rough around on the edges; in particular, the beach is unsuitable for swimming and becomes quite rocky as the tide goes out. There's no overland access to Ton Sai, so all visitors arrive by boat. Rai Leh is a two minute long-tail ride or a 10-15 minute walk away, while long-tails from Ao Nang to Rai Leh will also stop at Ton Sai on demand. There are three ways to reach Rai Leh on foot:1) At low tide it's possible to walk around the rocky outcrop which separates Ton Sai from Rai Leh (10 minutes).2) At high tide, most opt for the steep path which climbs up and over the rocky outcrop, which is densely covered with foliage (10 minutes).3) The least used option is a longer trail which starts on the northern, forested, edge of Ton Sai and mea...
Ko Siboya
2007-12-28 18:45:00
Ko Siboya (see-boy-ya) is off the regular tourist trail. Other than the island's one resort, you will find only a few local stalls selling household supplies, snacks and petrol as you explore the local culture. Ko Siboya is home to about a 1000 or so residents whose work is mainly in the rubber plantations or fishing. Dirt roads and foot paths connect the 4 or 5 small communities on this 3 x 10 km island. The lack of easy access to the island has limited transportation to either motorcycles or walking. A new community clinic is able to handle minor medical problems.Ko Siboya escaped the destruction of the crushing tsunami of December 2004, as it was in the lee of Ko Jum, but did have to deal with the high water surge which devastated the island's fishing fleet.Get inFrom Krabi Town there are three possibilities:charter a private longtail boat (about 1000 baht)take a songthaew to Nua Klong (on the southern highway towards Trang), where you can transfer to another songthaew to the c...
Krabi People
2007-12-28 18:40:00
People of Krabi Cave paintings and artifacts found around Krabi indicate that the area has been inhabited since prehistoric times.Today the people of Krabi represent a mix of three different ethnic groups who came to settle from other regions. It is said that each ethnic group has written a page in Krabi's rich history. The origins of the Chao Ley or "Sea Gypsies" are unknown. Living mainly on the islands, these nomadic people live in small settlements and earn their living from fishing, collecting shells and diving. They still retain their own language and beliefs and spiritual worship is still strong in the community. Although overexposure to tourism, and inevitable assimilation with mainstream culture is unfortunately threatening their small communities. Some of their traditional ways are celebrated at the yearly sea gypsy sailing ritual held in May on Koh Lanta, Koh Pu and Koh Cha and various ceremonies are still celebrated within the community. In the late 19th and early 20th cent...

Krabi Town Guide
2007-12-28 18:20:00
Everything you need to know about Krabi Town Krabi Town is a functioning Thai town that's been around long before international tourists started to visit Krabi. It's charming, laid back, and as much as the word is overused, it's very local. Tourism has arrived, but Krabi Town doesn't jump through hoops to bring in foreigners; as the main commercial and transit point for the province, it doesn't need to. Its unique personality is a welcome contrast to the surrounding beach areas. The river is a hub of activity with fishing boats and river taxis ferrying both locals and visitors to spots near and far. It's the place to catch a ride to the surrounding beaches and islands. Many hurry to the big name destinations - Railay, Ao Nang, Koh Lanta, Koh Phi Phi - getting in and out of town as quickly as possible. But for those interested in a dose of genuine Thai culture and hospitality, sticking around Krabi Town for a bit is a rewarding experience.Where to Stay in Krabi TownThere are mor...

Scuba Diving in Krabi
2007-12-28 18:13:00
The remarkable variety of dive sites that are concentrated in such a small area, particularly off Phi Phi Don Island, is what makes this area unique, as do the amazing limestone cliffs that rise dramatically out of the sea and plunge equally dramatically straight down underwater. The opportunity to relax on exquisite beaches, explore the numerous coves and bays, whilst enjoying some colourful and enticing scuba diving or snorkeling in this marine park environment, is one not to be missed.Learn to Dive in Krabi Krabi is a great place to learn to dive as there are a number of first-rate dive shops offering affordable scuba accreditation (usually with PADI) all the way from absolute beginner up to master instructor. In many hotels you can 'try a dive' in your pool, or dive shops offer 1 day 'try a dive' trips. Many people go on to take the PADI Open Water Diver course which is a 4 day course that combines some theory with practical experience (around 6 dives). Once complete you can ...

Temples in Krabi
2007-12-28 18:11:00
Wat Tham Seua (Tiger Cave) Wat Tham Seua (Tiger Cave Temp le) 5 km from Krabi Town is a small temple built inside a long shallow limestone cave, surrounded by natural forest. The temple, one of the south's most famous meditation centres, takes its name from a stone formation nearby which resembles a tiger's claw. Today, about 250 monks and nuns live in the temple compound. Two staircases wind up the limestone cliffs. The first one leads with 1,237 steps to the top of the mountain offering a superb 360-degree view and is definitely worth a try. Pillars on the staircase indicate how many steps you have already climbed and a monkey family lives around the stairs. Reaching the top will reward you with an incredible view and there is a huge sitting Buddha, a golden pagoda and a few other small constructions. The second one (only 130 steps!) leads into a valley where the monks live in simple huts.Riddled with cave systems, the whole area has revealed many archeological findings including ...

The limestone scenery which dominates the entire region offers a fascinating network of cave systems, both inland and along the coastline. Many contain wonderful crystalline formations, stalagmites and stalactites. A number are said to be the home of spirits and are steeped in local forklore, containing Buddha images and items of spiritual worship. Many of the coastal caves reveal collapsed caverns or "hongs" Inside the hongs are many interior lagoons open to the sky and accessed only at certain tides through tunnels in the rocks. Local kayaking companies provide excellent tours inside these cave systems giving an unobtrusive view of a unique eco-system.Many of the caves also contain prehistoric paintings, stone tools and pottery shards, giving a clue to Krabi 's rich past.Klong Thom Museum, south-east of Krabi Town, has a collection of ceramics, stone tools and bronze implements found at various excavations throughout the area. Located 18 km west of Krabi town and just next to Ao Nang, this quiet beach lies within the Hat Noppharat Thara-Ko Phi Phi National Park and features a 3 kilometre long sandy stretch lined by casuarina trees.Popular with local Thai picnickers and those who like to swim, eat and laze in the sun.Where to Stay in Nopparat Beach (Editor's Hotel Guide ) As Ao Nang spills over further and further into Nopparat it's getting harder to tell where one finishes and the other starts. In Nopparat Beach new resorts are opening regularly as the area is getting more and more popular, however the quiet astmosphere which attracts so many remains intact.Nopparat Beach An excellent beach if you prefer to have natural shade provided by the trees. Ko Jum Island
2007-12-28 17:37:00
The People Of Koh JumThe local population of Koh Jum is just 1,500. Outside of the bungalows, Jum residents are based in three main villages, Jum, Pu Village and Ting Lai.The Pace of life on Jum has two distinct speeds - slow and stop!Tourists only started to arrive on the island around 6/7 years ago. The first bungalows to be built were Joy Bungalow, the brainchild of a couple of local guys who were keen to advertise the natural beauty of their island home.Koh Jum is just like Koh Phi-Phi - 15 years ago. A very relaxed atmosphere, no rush to do anything and, thankfully, no huge resorts and pumping dance clubs. Having spoken to a few of the local community, this is likely to remain the case for years to come.In a province so well promoted around the world, it is refreshing to know that at least one corner of Krabi has remained a distinctly Thai charm.Whether it is fate, creative planning or just pure good fortune, the big money men have overlooked Koh Jum and just kind of drive by. ...

----------------------------------------- ----------------------- Ao Nang is Krabi's vibrant tourist centre. It has the relaxed vibe of a small town, the beauty of a beach resort, the modern comforts of home, and the friendliness the sets Thailand apart. The town itself is small; an hour-long stroll takes you from one end to the other. Given that floating buildings are impractical and sheer cliffs don't readily lend themselves to development, this paradise won't be paved over anytime soon. By road, Ao Nang is just minutes from Krabi Town and Klong Muang Beach and mere seconds to Noppharat Thara Beach. Via sea, Railay's beaches - including Ton Sai - and a grab bag of small, intimate islands are nearby. Pick a direction and give your waterborne taxi thirty minutes. A world of adventure waits.Of course, leaving Ao Nang is far from necessary. Great food, interesting people, cheap shopping, and a stellar beach make it a standalone destination. For plenty of travellers, this is the end ...
