Spanish pronunciation – the letter H - mp3 exercise
2007-11-26 09:58:00 The Spanish H at the beginning of a word is always silent. In my experience as a Spanish teacher, this simple pronunciation rule is easy to forget, especially with words that look very similar in English and Spanish, and one tends to say the ‘h’ like in English. To get used to the silent Spanish ‘h’, here’s a pronunciation exercise. Press play to hear the sentence below said by me, a native Spanish speaker, and repeat the words out loud. You can practise the ‘h’ and other letters with my Spanish Podcasts for Beginners.(it may take up to a minute to download) Practising the letter H El hijo de Helena tiene una hucha holandesa en su habitación Helen’s son has a Dutch piggy bank in his room Learning tips:Say this sentence out loud, not just quietly, to get used to the silent ‘h’.To sound like a native, join together the ‘l’ and the ‘i’ in ‘el hijo’.Also join together the two ‘e’ in ‘de Helena’. How to learn Spanish when you’ve got no time
2007-11-22 05:32:00 Finding the time to learn a foreign language is often impossible. Many of us simply don’t have the chance to sit down for half an hour every day to make progress, and in the evenings we’re too tired to concentrate on learning anything. That’s just how life is for most of us. If we want to learn a foreign language, we have to find other ways of doing it.For work and please I have studied languages regularly for over twenty years, often having very little or no time to spare. I’ve found that the trick is in making the most of those ten or twenty minutes here and there, sometimes longer, when you aren’t doing anything too demanding and you can multitask. For example, I listen to language podcasts while I cook, clean, walk, on the bus, at the gym, at the airport, etc. There are dozens of Spanish language courses on cd and mp3 for all levels that don’t require a book or dictionary. There are also Spanish audio magazines and hundreds of audio books in Spanish you can listen to... More About: Learn Spanish , Time , Learn , Nish

How to learn katakana
2007-11-02 08:43:00 When I found out earlier this year that I was coming to live in Japan for a few months, I soon started learning Japanese. First I bought a book + cd, and then I joined a course at my local language school. The lesson were good, but I wish my teacher had insisted at the time on how useful it is to know katakana when you live in Japan. There are dozens of everyday Japanese words that come from European languages, and they’re written in katakana: pan, cheese, monitor, coffee, beer, elevator, chocolate, cream, milk, shampoo, salad, pizza, burger, computer, apartment, and many more. I had only been in Japan for a couple of days when I realized that if I knew katakana my trips to the supermarket would be a lot more enjoyable, so I got Let’s Learn Katakana. It’s an 88-page book that teaches you how to read and write the 46 katakana characters, and introduces you to plenty of words usually written in katakana. I learned the first ten characters in about half an hour. The next day I lea... More About: Kana
Spanish verbs – tips to learn them easily
2007-11-02 05:22:00 Finding patterns common to several verbs or verb forms is the easiest way to remember even the most irregular Spanish verbs. Here are some of the most useful patterns I always show my students:Verb endings indicate the person. To build regular present tense forms, for example, we drop the endings ‘ar’, ‘er’, ‘ir’ and add the following endings: mirar leer escribir miro leo escribo miras lees escribes mira lee escribe miramos leemos escribimos miráis leéis escribís miran leen escriben You will often find the endings marked here in red even in the most irregular verbs. The person ‘yo’ is less predictable and some irregular verbs in the present end in ‘y’ (voy, soy, estoy, doy), ‘go’ (tengo, digo, salgo, caigo) or other less common endings, but the endings of the other persons are easy to figure out in most cases: tú – s; él/ella – vowel; nosotros – mos; vosotros – is; ellos/ellas – n.The imperfect is the least irr... Don't buy language courses – download them!
2007-11-01 13:42:00 Have you ever wondered why people still pay for language courses when you can get so many for free on the Internet? Are those people wasting their money or is there more (or, rather, less) to free language courses than we would like?Over the past few months I’ve listened to many of the most popular free language podcasts and have visited dozens of sites offering free language lessons, and have come to the conclusion that they all have one thing in common: poor quality. If you haven’t used a good language course before, the free ones might not feel that bad at all. I agree. But I have used many, both as a Spanish teacher and a student of several languages, and I wouldn’t recommend to my students any of the free lessons I’ve found. Why? What makes them poor quality courses? They’re not written by experienced language teachers and, therefore, lack consistency and depth. They bring up topics randomly and don’t cover them thoroughly enough. They don’t stick to one level, rath... More About: Download , Language

Common language learning mistakes
2007-10-30 07:48:00 In my experience both as a language learner and a teacher, these are the seven most common mistakes we make when we use a language course. Avoiding them will help you learn faster, stay motivated and have a sound knowledge without gaps.Using any old language course you can get. Not all language courses are the same by any means. In fact, choosing the right language course for you is going to be a main factor in whether you succeed or not. Modern language courses are significantly better than old ones. For a start, they have more and better audio material. Also, the teaching methods used nowadays are more practical than traditional ones. They put the emphasis on speaking and understanding, rather than on grammar and reading. Using a language course without audio material. The audio material not only brings a language course to life, it’s also its backbone. Without it you will not be able to develop your listening and speaking skills. Great deals on Rosetta Stone software
2007-10-26 08:06:00 The Rosetta Stone language learning software has rightfully earned itself an enviable reputation as one of the best language learning methods. Its award-winning products are used by NASA, the US State Department, and thousands of schools. To prove its quality, Rosetta Stone offers a 6-month money back guarantee.Probably the most positive aspect of this software is its ability to inspire confidence to speak in the new language from the beginning. User reviews often mention it. Rosetta Stone uses an immersion method which does not require you to learn grammar rules, or do tedious drills and vocabulary memorization. Instead, it centers on image and word associations, and as you learn more words, you start to build sentences step-by-step.This is how the Rosetta Stone method works. On the screen you get four images, for example, four everyday objects. Each image has a sound file associated to it. You then click on the sound to hear it as many times as you like.
