Der Gotteswahn
2007-10-16 09:04:00
The German translation of Richard Dawkins' The God Delusion is entitled Der Gotteswahn. It was launched on September 10, 2007. It became a bestseller the day after, and it remains in the top ten.Richard Dawkins is a British evolutionary biologist, and most of his books have been translated into German. Other titles are: Das egoistische Gen (The Selfish Gene), Der entzauberte Regenbogen (Unweaving the Rainbow), Gipfel des Unwahrscheinlichen (Climbing Mount Improbable), Und es entsprang ein Fluß in Eden (River Out of Eden), Der blinde Uhrmacher (The Blind Watchmaker), etc. Here are some quotations from Der Gotteswahn:Der Gotteswahn ~ by Richard Dawkins ~"Die Bibel ist in großen Teilen nicht systematisch böse, sondern einfach nur grotesk. Nichts anderes erwartet man von einer chaotisch zusammengestoppelten Anthologie zusammenhangloser Schriften, die von Hunderten anonymer Autoren, Herausgebern und Kopisten verfasst, umgearbeitet, übersetzt, verfälscht und 'verbessert' wurden...
The God Delusion
2007-10-16 06:38:00
Richard Dawkins' The G o d Delusion must be one of the most misquoted books in history. While reading what others have to say about Dawkins' book, I couldn't stop wondering whether some reviewers had genuinely misunderstood his words, or whether they were twisting them on purpose because his arguments are a truly uncomfortable read. If you're not an atheist, that is.Here are some quotations from The God Delusion that give an insight into Dawkins' arguments:The God Delusion ~ by Richard Dawkins ~"Imagine, with John Lennon, a world with no religion. Imagine no suicide bombers, no 9/11, no 7/7, no Crusades, no witch-hunts, no Gunpowder Plot, no Indian partition, no Israeli/Palestinian wars, no Serb/Croat/Muslim massacres, no persecution of Jews as 'Christ-killers', no Northern Ireland 'troubles', no 'honour killings', no shiny-suited bouffant-haired televangelists fleecing gullible people of their money.""I have found it an amusing strategy, when asked whether I am an atheist...
Love in the Time of Cholera
2007-10-10 08:19:00
García Márquez's Love in the Time of Cholera (El amor en los tiempos del cólera), is one of the most magical books ever written in the Spanish language. Published in 1985, it's set roughly between 1880 and 1930, somewhere unnamed in the Caribbean. It depicts the love triangle between Doctor Juvenal Urbino, Fermina Daza and Florentino Ariza; and is said to be inspired by García Márquez's parents' courtship. If you're familiar with his works, you will have experienced the strong impact of his writing, and this book is no exception. If you have just discovered him, here's an excerpt that brings his magical world to life:Love in the Time of Cholera ~ by Gabriel García Márquez ~"Once the stormy years of his early struggles were over, Dr. Juvenal Urbino had followed a set routine and achieved a respectability and prestige that had no equal in the province. He arose at the crack of dawn, when he began to take his secret medicines: potassium bromide to raise his spirits, salicyl...

Advanced Spanish
2007-10-09 16:50:00
Finding good Spanish language learning material for advanced students is notoriously difficult. Beginners have a vast array of books, cds, dvds, cdroms, videos, etc., to choose from, but if you've reached a high level and want to improve fast, there are only a handful of products on offer.Unfortunately, many of the packages that claim to be for advanced students only cover up to an intermediate level, and some of the publications that have been around for decades don't teach you useful words and phrases. So the choice really is quite narrow. In my opinion, at the moment the best publication for advanced students is the audio magazine Puerta del Sol. I've used it to teach some of my best students and it is what it claims: a fun way of learning lots of new and practical vocabulary. If you need help with your verbs, this audio magazine is not the best option. But if what you want is to hear a variety of Spanish accents and learn about all aspects of the Spanish culture around the worl...

Spanish words in English
2007-10-09 10:37:00
There are dozens of words of Spanish origin in everyday English . Some of those words have changed their spelling slightly, others have remained the same. In my Spanish podcasts you can find out many of these words, and you can hear how Spanish speakers say them (often quite differently from the way English speakers say them, even when they look the same in both languages). Here are some words of Spanish origin that have changed slightly: alcove (alcoba), barbecue (barbacoa), cannibal (caníbal}), canoe (canoa), canyon (cañón), Caribbean (Caribe), cigar (cigarro), cockroach (cucaracha), desperado (desesperado), grenade (granada), hammock (hamaca), hurricane (huracán), incommunicado (incomunicado). Many words, however, have preserved their Spanish spelling. Here are some of them: alfalfa, Apache, armadillo, barracuda, bolero, bonanza, bonito, burro, cafeteria, cargo, chocolate, cilantro, conquistador, coyote, El Niño, embargo, fajita, fiesta, Filipino, flamenco, guerrilla, hacienda...

Spanish greetings
2007-10-01 15:56:00
Here we're going to learn when to use the Spanish greetings: buenos días, buenas tardes and buenas noches. You can find these Spanish language tips in my free Lesson 1 - Spanish multimedia pdfThis is how you use these three Spanish greetings:Unlike in English, these three expressions have more to do with whether you've had your lunch or dinner than with the actual time of day. Roughly speaking, you'd say buenos días in the hours between getting up and having lunch, buenas tardes between lunch and dinner or at least dusk, and buenas noches between dusk or dinner and going to bed. Spanish speakers often have their meals later than English speakers, so it's common to hear people say buenos días at 2.00 pm and later. Buenas tardes, especially in summer, can be said till 9.00 pm and later. Perhaps the most interesting of the three expressions is buenas noches. Buenas noches doesn't necessarily mean ``I'm'' or ``you're going to bed'', like in English, although it means that...

Spanish translations
2007-09-28 09:15:00
Lately I've been testing Google's Spanish into English automatic translation abilities. The experiments have given me the most puzzling results. You can see for yourself. These inspiring verses are from La vida es sueño (Life is a Dream), by Calderón de la Barca(1600-1681), one of Spain's greatest playwrights:Cuentan de un sabio que un día / tan pobre y mísero estaba, que sólo se sustentaba / de unas yerbas que comía. ¿Habrá otro --entre sí decía-- / más pobre y triste que yo?Y cuando el rostro volvió, / halló la respuesta, viendo que iba otro sabio cogiendo / las hojas que él arrojó.And this is Google's intriguing and unedited translation:They count of a wise person, that a day so poor and miserable it was, that it was only sustained / of a grass that took. "There will be another one", to each other it said, "more sad poor man and that I" And when the face returned, / it found the answer, seeing that another wise person went taking / the leaves that it threw....
