Julian California

Julian was once the biggest gold mining camp in California . Today julian is home to world famous apple pies. In season you can also pick apples at the local orchards. The town has become so popular with tourist during apple picking time that the orchards are usually picked clean in just a few days. You can still pick up a pie but chances are the apples were grown somewhere else. There is a self guided historic tour and you can pick up the map at Town Hall. Lots of little shops with unique gifts and items and of course several resturants selling apple pies. Near-by Lake Cuyamaca offers fishing and hiking. Weekends can get very busy it is best to visit during mid-week to enjoy the quiet and peaceful historic town. View Larger Map

Mission San Antonio de Pala

Mission San Antonio de Pala is located in the San Diego back country. Founded by father Antonio Peyrei on June 13, 1816. The Mission is the only one of the original Spanish California Mission's which still serves Native American Indians. Just about half a mile from the mission you will find what is keeping the natives busy these days, Pala casino. The mission is well worth a visit, the gardens are beautiful and very inspiring. There is also a small museum which displays artifacts from the early history of the mission. A small donation of two dollars is charged to view the garden and museum. Burro Schmidt Tunnel

Burro Schimidt labored for thirty two years digging the 2000 foot tunnel through Copper Mountain. His dream was to haul ore through the tunnel to the smelter in Mojave. Before the tunnel was finished a rail line extended from Mojave making the tunnel obsolete. The Burro Schmidt Tunnel is listed on National Register of Historic Places and is located in Kern County, California near Garlock. GPS 35°24.62′N, 117°52.55′W. Directions to Burro Schmidt’s Tunnel and the cabins. Drive about nine miles up a dirt road that intersects Highway 14 north of Red Rock Canyon State Park, about 35 miles north of the community of Mojave. Watch closely there is a sign pointing out the start of the dirt road. High clearance vehicles recommended.

Point Reyes Lighthouse

About seventy miles north of San Francisco is the Point Reyes Lighthouse . There is a small visitors center with interesting information and facts about the 1870 lighthouse. A winding pathway leads down to the lighthouse from the visitors center. Warning signs advise you about the 300 steps you need to travel down to the lighthouse. Going down is not too bad but climbing back up is not for everyone. On a clear day you get breathtaking views of Farallon Islands and the Pacific Ocean below. This rugged section of California coast is part of the Point Reyes National Seashore covering approximately 71,000 acres. Pirate-themed camp outs at Legoland California ? Merlin Entertainment Group is asking the Carlsbad planning commission for permission for a campground program that could accommodate up to 275 people a night. With this new program families would be able to stay at Legoland after the park closes at 8 PM and camp in tents. Guest would be able to play games and watch shows. Calistoga's Old Faithful Geyser

Located in the upper Napa Valley near the town of Calistoga you will find one of only three Old Faithful s geysers in the world. Every thirty minutes or so this geyser shoots a stream of scalding steam up to 75 feet into the air. A side attraction is the small herd of fainting goats, a breed that faints when startled. Unfortunately the goats have become accustomed to the noise from all the visitors and are not easily scared. But they do add to the charm of the place and kids really enjoy seeing them. There are some picnic tables, a snack bar and gift shop where you can pick up souvenirs. Old Faithful Geyser is a great day trip from the San Francisco area. Fun and interesting for adults and kids. California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is starring in a TV ad campaign to be aired in Britain and Ireland. The £2.4 million campaign will promote California as a tourist destination. Along with the governor ‘Ugly Betty’ star Vanessa Williams and Rob Lowe, star of ‘The West Wing’ will also appear. Gov. Schwarzenegger, said, “People heard about the fires and they just assumed most of Southern California had burned down. I’m here to announce to the whole world: Southern California is still here and it remains open for business. The ad campaign will start showing the day after Christmas. California can expect a British invasion this summer if Governor Schwarzenegger has anything to do with it.

Good news ! Adventure City 's 10-acre lot along Beach Blvd had been sold to a developer for condominiums. Due to the soft real estate market the deal has fallen through. The little amusement park will continue operation along with Hobby City's other tenants. The property owner would still like to develop the property or sell it outright. But at this time there is no immediate need to close Adventure city. The little parks future is still uncertain so take a day to visit Hobby City, The Doll & Toy Museum and Adventure City.
