Crazy UP implements one-way oval scheme
2008-05-09 13:32:00
It has been ages since I passed by the University Oval, so when I did I was dumbfounded and very annoyed by the number of detours I had to take going to University Avenue coming from the Registrar's office. Can you imagine how short a ride that would've been if a one way oval scheme hadn't been implemented?I cannot find a logical or practical reason for doing this so I Googled it and found the answer on the Inquirer:The plan aims to lessen the number of vehicles passing through the university, subsequently reducing pollution and risks for UP students. Ultimately, she said, the goal was a “car-less oval,” as recommended by the UP Transport Committee.(I also found several blogs ranting about this too.)My first thought was how inconsiderate they were to everyone. They want lesser cars passing by, but that really can't be helped now, could it? The entire campus is in the middle of major areas such as Philcoa, Commonwealth, and Katipunan. The whole time I was driving to take a U-...

Danger Zone: Mindanao Avenue corner Road 20
2008-04-24 02:18:00
I don't like posting about negative stuff in this blog, because it an opportunity to talk about and promote the wonderful things you'll find in Quezon City, but every time I pass by Mindanao Avenue corner Road 20, it really bothers me to see this:The street post has been broken and dangerously entangled with electric wires for a couple of weeks now. Doesn't anyone see it at all?! What's the barangay doing about it?! The MMDA? Everyone seems to be turning a blind eye to this horrible sight. Do they really think they can let it be and that we can live with it? Sooner or later, somebody's gonna get hurt because of it. It's a double threat! Do we really want to wait until that happens before we do something about it?!And while we're on the topic of Mindanao Avenue and Road 20, another concern needs to be brought up: a pedestrian overpass urgently needs to be constructed in that intersection. It's very dangerous to cross Mindanao Avenue from Road 20 to Pluto Street, especially d...

Magnolia Scooperman opens in SM The Block
2008-04-20 16:55:00
Just what we need: another ice cream shop in SM The Block . When I'm in the mood for ice cream and I'm in SM North Edsa, the only place I could really go to where I'd have ice cream choices is Icebergs located in the main building, which is always full and crowded. That's why I let out a sigh of relief when Magnolia Scooperman Ice Cream Store had its grand opening today at the Activity Center of SM The Block. Magnolia Scooperman is actually located outdoors at the side of The Block; you won't miss it when you're crossing from the main building (Goldilocks/Watsons entrance) to The Block. If you've been to Ocean Park in Manila, then you've probably been already introduced to the ice cream parlor. Magnolia Scooperman, as its name promises, serves different concoctions of Magnolia ice cream. I can't really say that they offer anything new to the ice cream restaurant industry. The menu includes typical ice cream treats like banana splits, ice cream shakes, ice cream served in a w...

Can I have your used cup?
2008-04-01 16:08:00
A strange thing happened to me today. My boyfriend and I had just finished shopping for groceries in Cherry Foodarama, and we decided to rest for a while in the French Baker branch inside the supermarket. We ordered two large cups of Iced Mocha and sat at the outer area of the store, where we could view the cashier stalls.A guy enters a store. We noticed him because he was wearing thick round eyeglasses, where the lenses seemed to be like mirrors as it reflected things around it. He had long hair but the top part was like a mohawk. So anyway, he enters the store and we forget about him; then he walks out and passes by us. I thought that he had left already. Then he goes back to us and points to my empty cup of Iced Mocha, complete with ice, cover, and straw. He says, "Excuse me, are you done with this?" Sort of freaked out, I say yes and he takes the cup, then goes to the counter. It was so weird that I observed what he did once he arrived at the counter (my seat was facing that direc...

More and more restaurants open along Matalino St.
2008-03-28 13:13:00
You know a place has become a high-density commercial area when it has a Starbucks branch in it. West Avenue has two branches, Katipunan Avenue has three branches, almost all call center buildings have one nearby, and now there's one in Matalino St., Bgy. Central (Teacher's Village), also known as the street-slash-commercial-strip that connects Kalayaan Avenue to the East Avenue corner of Heart Center. But Matalino St. had always been a busy place. I remember when the place was still bare, with only a few restaurants in sight, namely the old Little Quiapo branch and Trelis. Slowly, more and more restaurants were established; small eateries, videoke bars, and later, franchises of popular food joints such as KFC, McDonalds, and Kowloon House. Just recently, Chowking and Jollibee had their grand openings in Matalino St., next to the newly opened Heart Center parking lot. And even before Starbucks set foot there, Mocha Blends had already catered to the caffeine craving of nearby reside...

Natural Spa
2008-02-27 10:40:00
Need to relax? Then you should probably go to Katipunan Avenue, not to lounge around in one of its three Starbucks branches, but to get some actual R&R in one of its best-kept secrets, the Natural Spa. A hideout for Brgy. Loyola Heights residents, celebrity and commoner alike, the Natural Spa guarantees relaxing spa and massage treatments for reasonable prices. The ambiance of the place alone makes you feel like you're in an authentic Japanese home, with a Zen interior design. The staff is very welcoming, but coming there on a weekend as a first-timer can make you feel out of place. Once regular clients arrive for their monthly or weekly treatments, they are received like family, and you'd realize that you're the only one there that they do not know personally. But that's not really a minus, just an observation. The Natural Spa's services vary from massage therapies, facial therapies, and natural body treatments. The one-hour massages include the usual Swedish and Shiatsu te...

Asian Environmental Issues Exhibition at SM The Block
2008-02-21 01:21:00
The Japan Foundation Manila's 10th Asian Cartoon Exhibition is currently on display at the activity center of SM North EDSA's The Block. The exhibition's theme is Asian Environment al Issues . Drawings and sketches created by Asian cartoonists focus on environmental issues, but given that they are cartoons, the issues are portrayed with a touch of humor. It is a little ironic that the Japan Foundation is sponsoring this, because the Japanese government has plans to dump its country's toxic wastes in our country through the JPEPA deal. But...that's another story.Representing the Philippines is Elizabeth T. Chionglo, creator of the comic strip Love Knots, which can be read in the Philippine Daily Inquirer from Mondays to Saturdays. Environmental ly-related works from Love Knots and her other comic Bobita are displayed. I read the Love Knots series in the Inquirer everyday. It always focuses and sheds humor on major current events such as the Peninsula Siege and the ZTE Scandal. I'm...

Tayo'y um-AHON: Acts of Hope for the Nation Foundation
2008-01-18 04:50:00
Blogging is fun, and it has become a pastime for most Filipinos everywhere. When I started blogging, I had no idea how many well-written Filipino blogs existed out there. These blogs contained just about everything and anything under the sun - personal memories and experiences, technology, moneymaking, art, music, politics and current events, education, showbiz gossip, gay/lesbian issues - you name it, it's out there (just look for it)! Blogging takes up so much of our time because it is the new form of edutainment; we not only get to write about what we want, we also get to read and learn from and become entertained by others.Indeed, it has reestablished among us the love of writing and reading, which, sad to say, is not very common for majority of Filipinos. Those that have no access to the Internet most likely resort to television and radio as their source of information, primarily because they are not interested in reading or they don't know how to read. I'm not really sure w...

Wedding, Debut and Party Venues in Quezon City
2007-12-14 04:59:00
My friend and I were talking the other day, and she told me she just came from a debut held in Grand Terrace, Commonwealth Q.C. She said, "I was surprised that a place like that even existed along Commonwealth!" I told her that there are a lot of places like that in the city, and most of the ones I know are in "hidden" locations, or at least the most unexpected ones:1. Fernwood Gardens, Sanville Subdivision - I'm guessing this place is quite well-known, or that people have heard of it even though they're not exactly sure what or where it is. It is best known as a wedding spot because it has the "only air-conditioned garden venue". A number of celebrities and well-known personalities held important events in Fernwood - Aiko Melendez and Martin Jickain's wedding, television news journalist Katherine "Kat kat" de Castro and Eric Rada Cruz's wedding, and Nadine Samonte's debut, for example. Fernwood also played host to tapings for such local television programs as Pangarap sa Bitui...

Recycle at TriNoma's Waste Market
2007-11-19 02:51:00
Good news! TriNoma Mall will be holding a Waste Market on November 23, 2007 from 8am to 3pm at the TriNoma Parking Lot (not sure which one). Get rid of your trash and earn money at the same time! You can bring and sell:broken office/home electrical and electronic appliance;used lead-acid batteries such as vehicle and UPS batteries;nonworking and obsolete computers and monitors;empty ink and toner cartridges;plastic and mineral products;paper and carton products; andempty Tetra Pak cartons.I'm not aware of any recycling centers in Quezon City, so we should take advantage of this event - clean our homes, earn money, and help the environment. It's a win-win situation, really. For more information, call Ayala Foundation at 752-1084 and look for Tin, Jess or Adel. You can also email them at swm(at)ayalafoundation(dot)org.

Big Brother Committed a Big Bad No-No in the "Pinoy Big Balita" Auditions
2007-11-08 01:41:00
I'm not an avid fan of Pinoy Big Brother , but I was able to watch a portion of the show last night. Big Brother decided to launch Pinoy Big Balita and held "auditions" inside the house for a newscaster. All the housemates were asked to read actual news from a teleprompter. Since most of them aren't professional reporters or speakers, it was inevitable that they would commit mistakes that looked funny to the viewers. Unfortunately, the news they were asked to read about involved the recent findings for the investigation of the Glorietta 2 blast, which the housemates knew nothing about.I found it inappropriate for Big Brother (or the show's producers) to use such a sensitive and serious issue as the topic for the Pinoy Big Balita auditions. The housemates had no idea if the news report they had read about was true or not. I switched channels when the auditions ended, so I did not really see them talk about their auditions. However, I caught some of them wondering about the news rep...

A Taste of "Quiapo" in Quezon City
2007-11-03 07:15:00
The last time I went to Little Quiapo, I was still a little kid who didn't want to eat there because the restaurant was not air-conditioned. It was still located along Matalino St. where the new KFC now stands, and I recall that it was sort of dark and maybe a bit dirty. Since my memory's a little fuzzy about it, here's a brief description (or a review, rather) of the old Little Quiapo: "When the common TV is open for viewing, expect almost zeroservice. The waiters are more likely watching TV than serving and they will getangry if you call them during the climax. Haven't been to their toilet but willsurely expect unsavory sight. Monobloc chairs gives it authentic cheapappearance complete with plastic washable table clothes. Don't go during peaklunch hour or late dinner because they become beer garden-like with thosegang-looking patrons." (This was back in 2002.) But hey, times change, and so do restaurants. Little Quiapo has not only moved its location, but also greatly improve...

Buhay Coke sa Ikot Jeep!
2007-10-29 12:48:00
Coca-Cola launched a great advertising campaign by contracting UP Jeep ney owners to sport a replica of the Coke bottle on their roofs and having Coca-Cola images and slogans painted on their bodies. You gotta admit, it's a brillant way to promote their product. Ikot jeeps go around the campus from day to night, so people passing by UP (not just students) are guaranteed to see them. And because of the colorful paint jobs and Coke bottle on the roofs, these jeeps are definitely bound to catch people's attention. Although I'd love to say that you'll only find these Coca-Cola jeeps in Quezon City, I saw one a little while ago in Manila along Quiricada St. However, the one in Manila doesn't have the "Yes! Buhay Coke" colorful design, just the Coca-Cola bottle on the roof and some product slogans on its body. It's a great piece of pop culture, no doubt about it. I think they look great, considering the designs look wonderful. They certainly spruce up the typical Ikot/Toki jeep design...
Pick A Book Super Value Bookstore
2007-10-24 11:17:00
Pick A Book Super Value Bookstore is another good place to buy pre-owned books. It's located inside the ELJ building of ABS-CBN, near Casa Ilongga (that's all I can say about directions, I'm not familiar with the interiors of ABS-CBN). It's a small bookstore but offers a wide range of selections in the categories of fiction, non-fiction, reference, puzzle books and children's books. They have books on photography, music, history, romance, and bestselling books. There are also some magazines but I'm not sure if they are back or new issues (forgot to check!).I think the cheapest price they have is 75php, while most hardbound books cost about less than 200php. Pretty good buys, especially if you really want the book or it's a rare find.Oh, and by the way, ABS-CBN Publishing is having a sale. Back issues of Metro, K (Kris's mag), Working Mom, Pink, Chalk, Maxim, Star Studio, hiM, and other magazines by ABS-CBN Publishing are sold at around 20-90php. Just a tip.Related posts: Boo...

Park your car properly: Don't let this happen to you
2007-10-24 10:45:00
Here's the scene: You park your car on the side of the road, in front of the parking space of an establishment that's still closed. There are watch-your-car boys or manongs that guarantee you that it's okay to park there and that they'll take care of your car.But then it's opening time, and the establishment's patrons need to park their cars so they could get in. Your car, however, is on their way. What will the manongs do?Here's what the parking manongs of the Power Up Badminton Center along Mother Ignacia Avenue did:They moved the car by towing it so that the parking entrance will be clear. I don't know about any of you, but I sure wouldn't want them to do this to my car, especially without my consent. I don't know if this is the only place they do this, but I wouldn't risk it.Wherever you are, make sure you park your car properly. If it's really urgent, then you should've woke up early enough to make sure that you find a proper parking spot.

Books For Less branch in Mindanao Avenue
2007-10-24 05:45:00
When it comes to shopping, there isn't much to see along Mindanao Avenue as most businesses there are composed of auto shops and banks. That's why the Books for Less branch along Mindanao Avenue stands out. It's nice to have a Books for Less branch in Mindanao Avenue because pre-owned bookstores usually have titles that mainstream bookstores like National (which has a branch along Congressional) don't have. You'll find it at the second level of the MedExpress building, where Padi's Point used to stand, near the Congressional-Mindanao intersection and right before KFC. There are a few parking spaces that they share with MedExpress. But whenever I pass by there, I don't see a lot of cars parked especially since the drugstore has a drive-thru sevices, which is so convenient.I've never been to a Books for Less store, but I do know that they sell pre-owned books, thanks to the big flashy signs in the Mindanao Branch . Once you go upstairs you'll see nothing but tarps on sale promo...

Good ukay-ukay locations
2007-10-22 05:03:00
A lot of people have been searching for good ukay branches around Metro Manila. Here are some good spots that I usually go to:1. Anonas Complex - this is the building where Freedom Bar is located. It has been around for years, I first discovered it in 2004 and it's still there and selling today. There used to be two stores facing each other in the complex, but last time I checked, the other one had closed down and a new store/establishment has opened. Anyway, the one left has good finds too. There are times when they go on sale where all shirts are for only 40php.2. ...A few steps away from Anonas Complex - There's another ukay along Anonas Rd. It's right before the Anonas Complex building if you're coming from Sikatuna. The store is quite big so it's not stuffy, there are fitting rooms, and the prices are fixed. Once you enter, you'll find two sections of the store: on the left side are the regular-priced items and on the right are the items that are on sale. You'll find a l...

Timbooktu: A little bookstore in Katipunan
2007-10-20 07:23:00
If you take a right on the alley after the Ateneo-Miriam overpass, you'll find a modest little bookstore called Timbooktu. It's actually just a stall along with the other newly-set up stalls in that area (mostly composed of small restaurants and eateries). You won't miss it when you're walking from KFC going to Bo's Coffee.Timbooktu sells used/pre-owned books, much like the style in Filbars, which is located nearby. The book products aren't at rock bottom prices but they're pretty cheap if you consider that they're in good condition. They're even wrapped in plastic, just like new ones in big bookstores; you can, however, request the salesperson to open it up so you could see what's inside.Book subjects range from children's books, fiction, self-help, classics, and philosophy. There are some good novels also that you won't normally find in bookstores that sell pre-owned books.

QCPD patrol car

Check out the awesome patrol car of the QC Police Department:You'd think that when the QC govenment gave the local police department geared-up cars, they would abuse and not take good care of it. As someone said, lalaspagin lang nila yan! (they'll just sabotage these cars)On the contrary. The car was very carefully making its turn from CP Garcia to Katipunan. It wasn't speeding, overtaking, or reckless in traffic.A welcoming sight is the policewoman that was driving the car. She's probably part of the All-Women Mobile Patrol Unit that the QC government lauched last July 26. Read the story here.
Environmental organizations in Quezon City
2007-10-15 09:49:00
Quezon City is home to most national offices, but did you know that most headquarters of international environmental organizations are also found within the city? Maybe it's also time to consider and develop Quezon City as a hub for non-profit organizations. The offices of the following organizations are located in Quezon City:1. Greenpeace Southeast Asia - one of the most well-known and most successful environmental groups around, Greenpeace Southeast Asia concerns itself in such issues as global warming, genetic engineering, toxic pollution and the protection of forests. There are many ways to show your support Greenpeace; you can donate, join its campaigns/rallies, or sign online petitions for its causes. You can also signup for their email newsletter to know more about important environmental issues. Their office is located at 24 K-J St., East Kamias.2. Haribon Foundation - Haribon is dedicated to conserving Philippine biodiversity through community work and advocacy. It has fo...

Circle C Mall
2007-10-10 05:02:00
The Circle C Mall in Congressional Avenue is one of the busiest commercial centers in the area, giving Cherry Foodarama serious competition. When it was established 5 years ago, there was not much to do there except look around some tiangge stalls and DVDs. Today, it is home to restaurants, beauty shops, photo centers, a bank, and of course, the tiangge stalls. It also has Robinson's Supermarket, a BPI Express Center, Abensons Appliances, Bingo, and Hardware Exchange. Shopping Pirated CDs and DVDs used to dominate the stalls in the second floor of the mall, but due to a number of raids by the OMB, you won't find them there anymore. There remains, however, dozens of clothes stalls that sell the latest trends. The merchandise probably isn't as nice as the stocks in Greenhills, but if you stroll around and look hard enough, you'll probably get a good find. There are also some stores that sell nice clothes and stuff for babies and children. There used to be a Cinderella department st...

Congressional Avenue: New Gimmick Hotspot?
2007-10-03 05:38:00
While I was passing by Congressional Avenue this morning, I noticed a construction site with a sign that says: GERRY'S GRILL: GRILLING SOON. This was right in front of the building where Starbucks is. With Gerry's Grill on the way, will Congressional Avenue be the new gimmick hotspot in the city?Currently, Congressional Avenue is becoming a serious commercial district. First was the construction of Circle C, a pseudo-mall with tiangges, salons, and a supermarket. It is also home to Shakeys, Mocha Blends, Chowking, and other restaurants. Northridge Plaza has Red Ribbon, Pancake House, Max's, Figaro, and National Bookstore. Then of course there's Cherry Foodarama, a supermarket that also houses some tiangges, Jollibee and Greenhills.Aside from these restaurants, there are also a couple of bar and grills in the area - During's, Pork Barrel, and db grill and restaurant, which recently just opened. And now, Gerry's is on the way. The government is also said to be developing the exte...

Poor Management at Ybardo Bar
2007-10-02 04:03:00
Word of advice: If you're looking for a place to party in the Timog/Scout Area, don't do it at Ybardo Bar along Sct. Ybardaloza and Sgt. Esguerra St. The food and drinks may be cheaper than the usual bar price, but their management is so unprofessional, I don't think they even have a manager.Imagine making a reservation two weeks ahead - and the head waiter/manager(?) tells you that you don't have to make a down payment until days before the date you reserved. Then comes that week for paying, and you discover that somebody has already been reserved - and confirmed - for that date! What happens to your party now? What kind of restaurant makes a mistake of reserving two parties at the same time on the same date? They don't even have a logbook of the reservations they make; they didn't even try to contact and inform us that someone is also asking to reserve on the same date. The only consolation they gave us was to move the party to another date, with a cheaper minimum rate. Despi...

Quezon City Circle underpass inauguration set

Put a Sock In It (a postsecret project): Ateneo Student Exhibit
2007-09-26 03:57:00
Inspired by Frank Warren's http://postsecret.blogspot.com/, the Put a Sock In It: a postsecret project student exhibit celebrates the idea of a secret: its anonymity, the power it holds, and the sharing of a secret.Drop boxes were placed all over campus, where students can anonymously contribute their secrets written in creative and colorful designs. Random (or maybe the juiciest) secrets were selected and displayed in different categories: "Let's Get It On;" "I'm Gay Too;" "Unhappy that I am, I cannot heave my heart in my mouth;" "What? Me? Weird?;" and "I Know Who You Are." These categories were determined by the number of secrets that go under them. For example, because there were too many secrets about sex, the "Let's Get It On" category was created. The "Let's Get It On" category are secrets that involve erotic thoughts and activities. The exhibit explains that sex is a popular "hushed" subject among peers, and this is especially true here in the Philippines. Sex is taboo a...

Ukay Tip: What to Look For When Buying Clothes
2007-09-24 05:56:00
Although I think Baguio City still has the best ukay (thrift) offers in the country, the ones in Quezon City aren't that bad either. A lot of ukay-ukay stores have been popping all around and now it's pretty rare to go to town without seeing one. Shopping in ukay stores can be a good experience because it not only teaches you to be a good shopper, it also brings you totally unique clothes. When you wear a shirt you bought from ukay, there's a 95% guarantee that you won't be seeing anyone wearing the same shirt anytime soon. But you mustn't be deceived. Tempting as it is to visit and buy from most of them, not all ukay stores are that good. Some take advantage of the fact that they sell cheap clothing and therefore offer extremely ugly selections. Others take advantage of the uniqueness of their finds that they price them too high. Before you devote yourself into becoming a regular or suki at an ukay-ukay shop, make sure to check the following first:What they have to offer or the ...

Elliott Yamin at TriNoma Mall
2007-09-22 01:51:00
Eliott Yamin, the third place finalist in American Idol season 5, came to the Philippines for a mall tour this week. His first stop? TriNoma Mall in North Ave/Edsa, QC (September 21 2007). Even though Elliott Yamin is not that well-known in the Philippines, it was surprising to see how big already his following was. The entire TriNoma activity center was filled and the floors surrounding it were also crowded. The people who watching were actually fans of Elliott's, and not just some curious bystanders looking around.
