Jamaica, VERMONT -- Weeeeeeeeee!!!
2007-08-28 20:36:00 I love Vermont and I love little hippie towns. Jamaica is soooooo one. Mitch and I trekked down a few weekends ago to Jamaica to spend a weekend at a backwoods camp belonging to some friends of my roommate in celebration of her birthday!! I never get to Southern Vermont as much as I like and this weekend reminded me why - it is such a long drive when you're exploring via-NON 91 - which is of course where the best Vermont exploring takes place!Susan (my roommate)'s friends have this beautiful house at the end of this back road. But, the weekend extravaganza was not held there - it was up a logging road behind their house at their camp. (NOTE: For those of you who do not live in Vermont, a "camp" is anyone's second home - it ranges from a shack in the woods to a sprawling estate) Now, I was Vibeless this weekend as we knew before hand the camp was up a logging road and Mitch has a Jeep so of course we had to use it!!I absolutely love meeting Vermonters of different ages and w... Joe's Pond
2007-08-13 20:04:00 I have heard mentions of this place called Joe's Pond located up in Danville - past St. Johnsbury since my days as a Caspian Lake dwellah. And last weekend, I had a chance to see what it was all about. My "corporate friends" as I call them (this just means they are people I met professionally as opposed to on the internet or at moe. shows) headed up to one friend's house where we spent two days in the sun, on the water, and drinking this delicious lemonade I found in Yankee Magazine a few years back. It was a blast hanging out with friends I see more at Chamber of Commerce events than floating in "party barges" on Joe's Pond. The highlight for me was playing on the lake, for Mitch it was the hysterical music and dancing that went on after the sun went down. After coming home from the weekend, I looked through some old photos and felt I had to post the comparison of me loving green floating things when I was young to still loving them now:Now, Mitch may have thought the music...
Beat the Heat with Blueberries!
2007-08-03 18:58:00 I did! Last night Mitch and I trekked off in the air-conditioned Vibe (yes, I love this car!) and drove out to Richmond, Vermont. We watched the temperature drop from 95 at 5 pm in Burlington to a cool 87 in Richmond as we approached our destination of Owls Head Farm. This was a night that made life worth all the effort. The Gordon Stone Band was playing above the blueberry groves and the joyous music (extra joyous on this night as Gordon was just reunited with his banjo that had been stolen earlier in the summer) echoed through the groves, reverberating off the mountains, and back into my heart and soul. All the while Mitch and I skipped through the groves picking blueberries with the waning sun shining on our skin, making life and being alive a truly beautiful Green Mountain experience. We picked 6 quarts of blueberries and lounged on a blanket listening to the music and enjoying fellow Vermonters and each other, all while keeping cool on a hot summer evening. And with all th... More About: Heat , Beat
Tips on How To Be a Vermonter
2007-07-26 16:06:00 I have been working on this one for a while - definitely longer than I have been blogging. Before I continue (and yes, this is long, but it's really good - especially if you are new to the state or traveling and want to be like a Vermonter.) And please add suggestions or correct me if you want!My Background: I grew up in the Berkshires of Massachusetts, yes, a Masshole, but at least the Berkshires, well, that's for a Berkshire blog. After high school I went to college in Poughkeepsie, New York and got to experience the "New York thing." Then I moved to Nashville, Tennessee and got to really experience the "Southern thang." (shudder) Now, throughout all this time, I spent many summers in Greensboro, Vermont on Caspian Lake. And while my parents were not born in Vermont, the Carter families who built the cottages on Caspian Lake were - for instance, my grandmother on my father's side was born and raised in Mont pelier and my grandfather's father or grandfather was the minister... Vermont Campfire Toast
2007-07-12 19:33:00 Due to popular demand, I am going to post some campfire meals - the first being a yummy breakfast:VERMONT CAMPFIRE TOASTNeed:~ a campfire with lots of hot coals~ Tin Foil (lots)~ Thick cut bread (homemade from a local farmers market is preferred)~ Egg Beaters (so much easier camping than dealing with eggs and milk, but the localvore way is to get local eggs and milk)~ Cream Cheese~ Local berries (whatever is in season, the seasonal progression moves like this - strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, blueberries)~ Vermont Maple Syrup~ Cooking spray (always a good thing to carry in your "camp box")Directions:~ Mold 6-8 sheets of tin foil into a pan of sorts to fit no more than two pieces of bread side by side~ Cooking spray the tin foil~ Batter the bread with Egg Beaters and lay down bread side by side (or just one per tin foil pan)~ Spread a layer of cream cheese~ Pour Vermont Maple Syrup over it~ Lay out your selection of berries (may want to cut the strawberries)~ Plop down a lit... 4 Days Camping on the Connecticut River
2007-07-04 20:48:00 I love the Vermont State Parks. LOVE THEM!!!!! I think some of it has to do with the fact that when I worked at a marketing agency, the Vermont State Parks were one of my favorite public relations clients and I wrote the majority of the press kit. But mostly, it has to do with the fact that they are gorgeous, well-kept, convenient, historically fascinating, and just downright filled with magic and Vermont energy - one of my most favorite things in life! One day I will go to all of them, and this past weekend helped me cross two more off the list. Mitch and I camped at Wilgus State Park in Weathersfield (just south of Windsor, Vermont - the state's birthplace!) at a beautiful lean-to site on the Connecticut River . Wilgus is a small park with only about two dozen campsites (and two rental cabins!), but they are most known for the canoeing and kayaking and we got to camp right next to the launch and people watch all sorts of fun river rat types. Did we canoe? No, it was too chop... More About: Camping , Days , The Con
Vibin' in the Green Mountain National Forest
2007-06-25 17:27:00 What a weekend! So, Mitch (that would be my cute, Vermont rock star drumming boyfriend) and I decided to get outta town and participate in one of my all time favorite activities ever - driving my Pontiac Vibe all around Vermont. No, this isn't a plug for the Vibe, although I do think that car was created for me! Anyway, we bounce out of Burlington Saturday afternoon and have the car packed for camping - just in case. I am thinking I want to go south - like Green Mount ain National Forest south because it is almost too far for a one day trek - and if the energy flows a certain way, we'll find a place to stay and be able to hike in a part of Vermont I don't get to as much as I like. And did that energy flow ever!!! Holding the Vermont Road Atlas like a cult guidebook, we trekked more or less down Route 7 with some backroading and cemetery visiting, eventually leading us into Wallingford. We had dinner at a local Italian place called Sal's and giggled like kid's at the fact th...
Those Random Connections
More articles from this author:2007-06-05 20:03:00 Well, those of us who get what life is about know random connections are not random at all. But, that still does not lessen the magical impact of them! I was at Dark Star Orchestra at Higher Ground last night and while in line to get in, there was a pretty gal in front of me with a really cool embroidered jacket. My reaching out to her and commenting on her jacket put a smile on her face and gave me a look in my eyes of such thankfulness for reaching out in this time of human cravings for connections. I kept seeing her throughout the night and by the end of the night we were dancing up a storm together and exchanged emails for the next time we can meet, dance, and connect again! And that, my friends, is what this blog is about. Vermont Vibes - and the connections that energize them. Oh, and by the way, this blog is posted through Technorati! Technorati Profile More About: Random , Connections 1, 2 |
