The damage done
2007-11-12 04:38:00
There's some serious structural damage around the island. Here's some pix that show the situation at our daughters school, and it's the worst damage that I've personally witnessed. On the road in front of the school entrance, opposite where the new university is being build, constructions were underway to build a new water disposal system. During the whole month of October, it seemed that almost nothing has been accomplished by the constructors/contractors, although they must've been full aware of the pending rainy season. As if they haven't lived here long enough.......Result is that the structure collapsed by the massive amount of waters and worse, under the public road, the sand has been washed away, creating voids. Have a look at other pictures, it will explain itself. This is the river created by the water coming off the mountain at the other side of the road and since this was the only way down, water must've come from various ends to join the party, consequently to floo...

Today's weather; Not time yet to give up checking in here, since last night it rained again (not extremely hard) and thunder and lightning was going on in the near vicinity. Momentarily it's dry and it seems that the sun is trying hard to peek through, despite some grey clouds overhead. Current temp at 7am is 23.5C.Yesterday was a lovely day with sunshine all day long, except in the early evening, when it started to become greyish again. Max temp reached the low 3tees.Camille

Beautiful Samui pictures........
2007-11-11 02:01:00
This is an amazing website with stunning pictures of Samui.Besides having joined the Thron Tree forum and stumbling over Tezza's website, I also recently stumbled over Monique's Land of Smiles website. She's Dutch and lives on Samui and took photography on as a hobby, the results are just stunning.Especially after the recent stretch of rain and bad weather, I thought it to be a pleasant change to view some of Monique's pix.Enjoy.Camille

Don't drown during your Thai holiday!
2007-11-11 01:35:00
Required reading for holiday makers during the rainy season on Samui. Before I start off with restaurant reviews or other posts, here's some well meant warning for all your beach lovers during the rainy season, roughly from November through to February, if it boils down to this topic. This was posted before at my dive blog. Having just joined the Thorn Tree forum, the official Lonely Planet travel forum, where lots of good travel advise and information can be found, I stumbled over a prolific poster there, Tezza, who runs a couple of blogs, one about beaches and islands in Thai land and on this specific blog, he has a great post about not drowning during your Thai holiday. You may think, what is all this about and it won't concern me, but have a look and read up on it, he talks about rip tides and undertows and this should be required reading for everybody visiting Thailand, especially during the rainy season, when the likelihood of these rip tides is greatest! It's a subject I was...

Today's weather; It looks most promising, as the picture beneath shows, taken at sunrise between 6.30 and 6.45am this morning. The sun is out again, early in the morning, despite some (white) clouds being in the sky. The view is great, I can see the Koh Phangan hills from our balcony, a good few clicks away. It will take a few days or possibly weeks to clear all away from the recent flooding and hopefully the local and national Government learned some lessons and are willing to do something with those lessons learned, so in the future, Samui isn't that vulnerable for flash flooding.Current temp at 7am is 25.5C Yesterday saw a lovely day, smiles all around and people hanging their damp and wet clothes etc out to dry in the sun. Max temp reached 29.5C, we're on the way back! Thanks to every watching my simple weather blog over the last few days and the support received, the amount of visitors was sky high, in my little blog world, sometimes up to 300 per day! I do hope that once you ...

Rice is the word!
2007-11-05 13:57:00
Or should I say, it's a colourful world? On our shopping trip to Big C today, we saw this amazingly coloured rice, which I've never seen before. Blue, purple and yellow rice. Blimey! That looks pretty awesome.Unfortunately all notes were in Thai, so I'm not sure what this rice is mixed with, but it sure looks tempting to try out.Rather expensive though at 68 to 70 baht per kilo! Today's weather;White clouds have at last replaced the grey clouds and this morning the sun was out, although momentarily the clouds are taking over again. Another major difference is that the 'promised' wind by Wind Guru has come in, and there are warnings for boat traffic by the Thai Meteorological Department. Ferry traffic between the islands may be suspended for a day or two. On the upside, it's currently 27.6C at 7 amYesterday was a lovely day, despite bad weather forecasts we had sunshine all day and stars in the evening and, no rain! Max temp reached since a long time the 3tees again, 30.2CSince it's been a while that I posted pictures, here's one from yesterday's smashing weather.Camille

Today's weather; It's (light) grey with rain and the wind came up, at last, as predicted by Wind Guru, although not as strong as predicted and it has been toned down by Wind Guru as well. The sun is fighting to get e peek through the clouds though. Current temp at 7 am is 25.5CYesterday was a rather nice day, all day had sunshine on Koh Tao where I was diving and Samui had some rain around 10 am but sunshine for the rest of the day. Max temp reached 29.6CCamille

Today's weather; It looks rather nice this morning, light grey clouds with bits of sunshine trying to pry through although the forecast at the WindGuru forecast site doesn't look good, especially Sunday and Monday don't look too good. It's currently around 25C at 7 am.Yesterday was a nice day on Samui with no rain (although there was rain last night) but on Koh Tao, where we were diving, there was a heavy shower around 2 pm that almost blackened out everything for a few minutes. Max temp reached 26.2CCamille

There's some thin blue patches but still surrounded by plenty of clouds. Current temp at 7 am is 24.9CYesterday was not so good, a lot of rain from the early morning all through the day. Welcome to November
2007-11-01 16:05:00
Welcome to November .It looks like this is going to be a very interesting month ahead of us. Normally this is by far the wettest month of the year, however, it will be difficult to beat the amount of rain that we had during October, so let's hope this November will slack off.Slowly the roads are recovering from the floodings during October, although marginal amounts of rain will have them flooded again and unfortunately today, 1st November didn't start that great, there was quite a bit of rain.Let's hope for the best however and keep our fingers crossed. We can do with a bit of sunshine once in a while!Camille

See my dive blog. This morning and last night there was a lot of rain and it was around 24C in the morning, now at 5 pm it's only 24.7C.Yesterday was a lovely day, almost all day sunshine except around 2 pm when we were on Chaweng Beach, getting ready for a dive and it rained for a bit! Afterwards there was sunshine again however! Max temp reached 29CCamille

Today's weather; It's a mix today, dark grey clouds are fighting with the sun for supremacy but at the moment the sun is having the upper hand. Current temp at 7 am is 26.2CYesterday was a mixed day, in the morning there was lots of rain and in the afternoon it dried up with a max temp of 29CToday is the last day of our daughters one month long school holiday, much to the delight of my wife! Due to the bad weather there wasn't that many outdoor options for them so it gets very busy at times with a 2 and a half year old and an almost 5 year old in the house all day.Camille

Goodbye to October
2007-10-30 02:34:00
Goodbye to October of 2007 indeed. This was by far the worst October on Samui in my 8 years here and it's a good thing to wave goodbye to it.The beginning of October was still good and sunny but by mid month the rain started and it came down relentlessly. I only witnessed so much rain in November 2005. Talking about November, that's normally the wettest month so I don't know what that is going to mean next month...............October being so wet as it was this year is unusual so let's hope for the better and November is getting better, last year in November it was nice and sunny until the end of November.Camille

Today's weather; There's still hope! This morning we woke up to sunshine, not full blasting blue skies but still, sunshine in the morning, in between the clouds! Gives for a different feeling. Current temp at 7 am is 25.1CYesterday was a rather nice day, in the morning sunshine and in the afternoon bits and pieces of rain but not as hard and long anymore as it used to do. The flooding on the roads is subsiding so things all around are on the up again!Chaweng Beach yesterday morning at 8am in front of Centara Hotel. The garden at Centara Hotel, yesterday morning at 8am, which gives a good feel about the sun being out again.Camille

Current temp is 23.8 at 7am.Yesterday saw lots of rain in the morning hours and it dried up a bit in the afternoon although it still drizzled on a few times.Yesterday also saw the Full Moon party on, wonder how they all got on Koh Phangan. Finally got around to post an update on the current IDC as well, with an update of the PADI IE in the pipeline by tomorrow on my dive blog.Camille

Today's weather; It's not as grey as the previous days and I've spotted a small blue spot in the sky as well this morning before 7am. The sun is even trying to pry through the clouds, very bleak but nonetheless. Temp right at 7 am is 24.8Yesterday started out bad, hard wind and more rain and more roads were flooded, as if the drainage system was about to collapse. However, in the afternoon things changed for the better and we had the first sunshine and patches of blue sky again!Today we're about to finish the current IDC with a trip to Koh Tao to complete the final Open Water dive, which we had to postpone yesterday. Keep tracking progress at my dive blog.

Today's weather;Same old same old, grey and wet, it's raining right now at 7.20am and on top of that the wind has joined the party as of this morning. Temp right now is 25.4CYesterday was wet and grey as well. Rain most of the day with a max temp of 26.2C.These shots were taken yesterday and are directly around the corner of my house, this picture shows how deep the water is, between my house and the local 7-11. This picture gives an idea how long the stretch of water is, I'm not half way yet and the car at the opposite side is already in the water. This is one of the pumps in action all around the island at critical points. This pump is located at the Bophud traffic lights.Camille

Today's weather; This post is about 10 hours later than usual, since this morning we had a power cut and I didn't have access to my internet connection until now, just after work, almost 5 pm.It's not been a great day though, again, pretty much all day rain and loads of roads have water running over the road or are just completely flooded. Current temp is 24C.Yesterday was rain all day with a max temp of 28.2CThis shows the road around the corner of our house, this afternoon, on the way to the local 7-11. Lots of roads around the island are submerged just like this.

Today's weather; It's grey and everything was wet this morning. Right now at 7.30 am it started to rain again. Max temp at 7 am was 24.3C.Yesterday was one to quickly forget, rain pretty much all day long. Had a day off from work, and with the oldest having her holidays from school, there wasn't much to do unfortunately, so we went shopping at Makro and Big C, which pleased them nonetheless.Max temp reached 27.8C and due to the almost non stop rain, many roads were flooded, some knee high! Water pumps are put in place at well known hot spots to pump excessive water away! It's the rainy season at it's 'best'.Here's a link to an article in the Bangkok based, English language newspaper 'The Nation' about warnings being issued for flash flooding in Southern provinces or have a look at the Thai Meteorological site.Camille

Fire next to Big Buddha market
2007-10-19 14:26:00
The electric wiring next to Big Buddha was on fire this evening when I drove by.In two different spots, as can be seen here, the electrical wiring was on fire. In most of Thailand (everywhere that I know of) the electrical wiring is all above ground. I'm not sure what happened on this occasion, but it must've been very recent when I drove by. It's nice to see that the airport fire truck was already at the scene and a good handful of Police officers and fire brigade people were standing around, looking at the fire. Electric wiring had fallen down to the ground but was not severed from their mains but nobody took any effort to keep anybody at distance or to secure the scene and everybody was having a good time just watching or just like me snapping pix. Amazing Thailand! Whilst taking these pictures, a second fire truck arrived, with flashing red lights and blazing horns. I didn't even know Samui had that many fire trucks. Friends told me that after I left, even a third fire truck...
