2007-11-15 13:16:00 HK Travel Agencies Field-Study Shaoxing Tour Itineraries About 70 kilometers from Hangzhou, Shaoxing is sheltered by Kuaiji Mountain and nestled among Zhejiang province's abundant Yangtze-fed waterways. The architectural style and atmosphere is typical JiangNan, meaning the area south of the Yangtze river. White walls punctuated with black tiles line narrow cobbled streets, so that when harried city dwellers dream of an idyllic paradise and retirement home, they often dream of Shaoxing. Yet Shaoxing is more than just a quiet place, it's also served as the home to many of China 's most renowned scholars, writers and poets. No city in China can claim to be the hometown of as many nationally known personalities as Shaoxing. This 4000-year-old city was established by the Yue Kingdom and later became the capital of this state, with legends remaining which stretch all the way back to this period. 2007-11-09 11:39:00 Chinese New Year starts with the New Moon(新月)on the first day of the new year and ends on the full moon(满月)15 days later. The 15th day of the new year is called the Lantern Festival(元宵节), which is celebrated at night with lantern displays and children carrying lanterns in a parade. The Chinese calendar is based on a combination of lunar and solar movements. The lunar cycle(月运周期)is about 29.5 days. In order to "catch up" with the solar calendar the Chinese insert an extra month once every few years (seven years out of a 19-yearcycle). This is the same as adding an extra day on leap year (闰年). This is why, according to the solar calendar, the Chinese New Year falls on a different date each year. New Year's Eve and New Year's Day are celebrated as a family affair, a time of reunion and thanksgiving. The celebration was traditionally highlighted with a religious ceremony given in honor of Heaven and Earth(万物), the gods of the hous... More About: China , Spring , Tour

beer festival in qingdao
2007-11-08 12:24:00 There are many places in China that are very nice, but to my surprise,I went to Qingdao for the first time awhile ago and I liked it alot!!! It's hard to find sunshine and good beaches in China, butQingdao has it! I have heard so much about the place and I finally hadthe pleasure of going there for the first time a bit ago. After Iarrived, what I found was bright sunshiny blue skies, nice oceanbreeze, and lots of very nice sandy beaches. What's nice about Qingdaois that on certain streets, you can't even find any motorcycles orbicycles because of certain regulations. The streets are clean, andthe roads and structures are all very neat and tidy. What we also raninto, was the annual beer festival, tons of people having a good timesipping brew and enjoying the festivities! Qingdao is known for itsbeer and there is nothing better than downing a gulp of ice cold brewafter a hot afternoon of pure sweating! I love to have a few beershere and there, but I had the time of my life... More About: Beer , Festival

2007-11-03 10:19:00 Crazy week this week with mid-terms, but I had a great weekend. This past weekend Jess cashed in her fabulous prize from the CapitalClub ball and she, Cary, Patrick, and I went to the seaside city ofQingdao for the weekend. We left early Saturday morning, but the flightwas only an hour. The hotel was nice, with Louie Viton and otherhigh-end name brand stores in the lobby and a gigantic chandelier inthe midst of a spiral stairway. At 11 we met Jessica who was from theyacht company that sponsored the trip. We went out on the yacht, whichI guess was nice. I know nothing about yachts. We got to ride in thefront and got bounced around and we went out to an island for lunch. Myfirst ride out on the ocean was great, the weather was perfect. Coolbut bright an sunny. Plus there's hardly any pollution in Qingdao sothe sky was bright blue, and the ocean was beautiful, emraldy blue. The dock of the island was covered with drying fish caught on old bluewooden boats that look like something str... 2007-11-03 10:10:00 Sitting in a smoky internet cafe, continually asking Ryker what thischaracter means for logging in, etc. But, we are on our 3rd day ofbeing in Qingdao. It is perfect for the weather. Bright, sunny daysand nary a sign of any smog whatsoever. Just like being on the otherside of the pacific. Maybe if I stretch far enough, I could see Pier39. But, we like the sun and clean air here on this side of thePacific. Our train ride up on the hard sleeper was not so pleasant as our rideto Beijing on the soft sleeper. Our cabin had 6 bunks and Ryker and Ihad the bottom ones. Grandpa had to climb up to the one over me and amiddle aged lady took the top bunk while two younger men took the onesover Ryker. For some reason the train seemed to stop for 5 to 25minutes at most stations. At one, it took over an hour to get going. While the train is in motion, the noise from the steel wheels anduneven tracks drowns out the various sounds etc. of the passengers. The sounds are difficult enough to deal with, b... 2007-11-03 09:46:00 Venturing out of our dorm rooms and out of our schoolwork, we went to a section of Harbin known as "Old Harbin." Here, there were lots of great things to see, chief among them being the architecture. Here is a very beautiful mosqque, closed to the public, but still very beautiful from the outside. This old building was quite a strange site. On the very corner of the intersection, it looked almost as if the wrecking crew quit a little prematurely! I'm not sure what its uses were. New shops have, like in many cities with long histories, set up shop (no pun intended) in second-hand (or 10th hand) locations. If you look at the top of the building, there are some details similar to that of the octoganal building in the picture above. Here, I was just hanging out under the shade of a rather large tree, and watching the pedi-cabs stream by. Again, you can see some of the architecture typical of the area.-- china tour ! you are welcomed More About: China , Tour
