My Discoveries : Langkawi Smooth Sailing
2008-01-12 18:17:00
My Discoveries : Langkawi Smooth Sailing Dutch visitor, Thomas Kothuis gathers a few sailing buddies to discover that the 99 islands in the Langkawi archipelago offer more than just a holiday in the sun, surf and sand. They charter a Sunsail yacht with a skipper who is familiar with the local waters for a relaxing five-day sail around the main island and to several of the outer islands. The group enjoys the peace and tranquility of the near-deserted islands as well as some of the good life at two Langkawi marinas. We had been searching the web for different sailing options in Malaysia and found an international yacht charter company called Sunsail based on the island of Langkawi in northwest Malaysia near the maritime border with Thailand. Sunsail has operations all around the world and has now opened an office at the Royal Langkawi Yacht Club. The decision was made to sail with them since it was our first time in that part of the world and the company has a good reputation as it opera...
My Discoveries : Mount Kinabalu Ascent
2008-01-12 18:11:00
My Discoveries : Mount Kinabalu AscentBeth, an adventurous young American traveller finds out that climbing one of South East Asia’s highest mountains is a challenging but rewarding experience. In the process she discovers muscles she didn’t know existed in her body and obtains a certificate for climbing to the summit of Mount Kinabalu in the East Malaysian state of Sabah on the island of Borneo. She learns from her local Kadazan guide that the mountain is one of the most important homes for plants and animals with some flora being only found here in the park and nowhere else on the planet. This helps her understand why UNESCO has classified Kinabalu National Park as a World Heritage Site.At the end of my descent from the 4,101metre high Mount Kinabalu I could barely stand and my legs felt like jelly but that doesn’t mean that every step of the climb up Mount Kinabalu wasn’t worth it. Upon reflection and a soothing and relaxing rest in the heated pools of the nearby Poring H...
My Discoveries : Sandakan Animal Sanctuaries
2008-01-12 18:07:00
My Discoveries : Sandakan Animal SanctuariesBill Boakes and Nicolla Briggs, two UK nationals with backgrounds in printing and retail decided that, with few ties in the UK, it was time to 'see the world.' Already with a deep love of diving, they decided that a holiday in south-east Asia sounded ideal. Although they had initially only planned to transit through Malaysia en route for Thailand, visits to west coast Islands of Langkawi and Pangkor convinced them there was something 'special' about this country. However, it was trips to the east coast and Perhentian in particular, where they unearthed a conflation of well-priced dive sites and the ambience of the Islands that led them to believe they had found their 'spiritual home.' This was only enhanced by subsequent trips to Sabah, Sandakan and the diving paradise centred on Sipidan Island. After diving in the Sipidan area, we made the journey due north to Sandakan. This part of Malaysia has a very different feel to that of the p...
My Discoveries : Melaka Heritage
2008-01-12 18:03:00
Greek friends, Katarina and Vicky meet up with their American friend Jennifer and head south from Kuala Lumpur for two days to the old historic port of Melaka (or Malacca) to unravel the city's history, explore the back lanes lined with artisans whose forefathers have worked their trade for centuries, appreciate the spicy delights of Peranakan food and to stay in some very historic local lodgings in the Puri Hotel. Using their trusty Lonely Planet guidebook they obtain the services of their hotel taxi driver to drive to and discover Melaka.Having heard so much about Malaysia it was inevitable that we would end up here one day for a holiday. We chose to stay in the Westin Hotel in Kuala Lumpur as shopping, eating and entertainment are always high on our travel agendas. Here we met Jennifer who was visiting from the United States and was keen to travel with us to Melaka as she had been reading about the city's colourful history. While there are various organised tours to Melaka we wa...

HEALTH TOURISM IN MALAYSIAMalays ia is fast becoming a strong competitor in the global health and medical tourism sector. Given the potential of health tourism as a foreign exchange earner, the government has taken a series of proactive measures to enhance Malaysia as a preferred health tourism destination.Health tourism in Malaysia consists of two main categories which are medical tourism and wellness programme. Patients can opt for medical treatments in one of our internationally recognised hospitals, and stay on during the convalescence or recovery period. Or they can come for a holiday by exploring the various forms of wellness programmes that are available in Malaysia.Competitive medical fees and modern medical facilities are two vital factors that make Malaysia a popular destination among health tourists. Patients can undergo treatment and recuperate in any part of the country for much less than what it would cost them for a treatment in other countries. For example, a normal c...
