The varied faces of Christiania
2007-05-21 22:32:00 by: Tim Anderson (timothyanderson2005@gmail.com)It's time to return to the subject of Christiania, the 'hippy enclave' in Copenhagen that has existed since the early 1970's. Since writing the last article about Christiania for this blog over two years ago, Getting the Christiania vibe...or not, plenty has happened, though little has changed.Christiania hit the news once again last week, thanks to the actions of the police who moved in unannounced to knock down an abandoned building there. To be clear about my view on things, there are a few occasions when police presence is required in Christiania. Probably about 5% of the occasions when they actually show up there. It's good business for the police, at the behest of the authorities who give the orders, to carry out these sorts of muscle-flexing actions - show up and tear something down - since it tends to provoke a few locals, along with the various outsiders who take an interest in these things (and in particular the ones alwa... Bringing the farm to Nørrebro
2007-05-15 11:30:00 the small fruit and veg market at Israel Plads in Copenhagen...A new farmer's market is set to open later this month (May 26) in Nørrebro (around Jaegersborggade between Kronborggade and Stefansgade). The market - not a big one, just a small handful of stands - will be open Saturday's from 10.00 - 14.00.Copenhagen is not a place where you find people going to the market to shop for fruit and vegetables. Or perhaps the real problem is that farmer's markets that have never embraced Copenhagen. Either way, it's too bad. Shopping for fresh fruit and vegetables, and various other gastronomic pleasures like tasty cheeses and various preserves and so forth, is one of the underrated joys in life, if you ask me.At present, the best bet is the fruit, vegetable and flower market just behind Nørrebro Station, at Israel Plads, which is open daily.Perhaps the lack of popularity of farmer's markets in Copenhagen has something to do with the weather. Perhaps it has something to do with Denmark... More About: Farm
The Books at Lab in Copenhagen
2007-05-13 02:06:00 by: Tim Anderson (timothyanderson2005@gmail.com)sorry, only grainy mobile phone pics once again...The guys from Komponent struck again on Friday night (May 11), booking The Books , the fantastic guitar/cello duo of Paul de Jong and Nick Zammuto from New York. These two guys know how to put a song together. Their music is a series of beautiful and emotional guitar/electric cello pieces, complete with vocals and plenty lots of electronic effects. The result is an original, distinct and compelling sound which quickly hooks the listener. Moreover, what Paul and Nick really know how to do is put together a stunning performance befitting of their songs. Each and every song is complimented by a purposefully created visual presentation that Paul and Nick have created, synced to the music - the guys queue the videos themselves at the start of each song. Filled with vibrant themes created using an assortment of random video images, old home videos and computer graphics, each one of them powerfull... More About: Copenhagen , E Book , Cope

Trentemøller: Moan
2007-05-10 09:48:00 The latest video from Denmark's Trent emøller, for his track Moan, can only be described as weirdly fantastic. It also happens to be a brilliant track to boot. The first time I heard the track, it was at about 4AM in a rather underground club in Berlin some friends and were directed to during a recent visit last month (located not so underground on the 15th floor of an office building...). An appropriate way to be introduced to this one, I can assure you.Somehow Trentemøller's international stature has grown significantly during 2006, he's still pretty 'local' in Copenhagen, the only difference from past years is that now he does solo shows that sell out, rather than low-key club appearance on keyboards (alongside his DJ buddy Tom Von Rosen).Enjoy!Or check out his myspace page: http://www.myspace.com/trentemoeller More About: Rent
Give me hope. Give me change. Give me the New Alliance Party...
2007-05-09 16:28:00 by: Tim Anderson (timothyanderson2005@gmail.com)If there is a couple of words politicians can be counted on to trade upon time and time again, it's hope and change. The formation of the Ny Alliance Part y ('New Alliance') yesterday, Denmark's first new political party in the past 10 years (at least the first to actually hold a seat in parliament, that is), is the latest political development offering up the prospect of a bit of hope and dose of change. There has been a clear and gaping hole in Danish politics since the last election - which the Ny Alliance are cleverly taking the opportunity to attempt to exploit. In recent years, there has been a lack of parties in Denmark positioned in the very center. The existing political parties essentially form two dominant clusters - one distinctly right of center (the government of Venstre and Konservative, supported by the Dansk Folkeparti) and one distinctly left of center (Social Demoncrats, Socialistisk Folkeparti, and Radicale Venstr... For the love of...Danish potatoes
2007-05-08 18:57:00 excitement in a box (for some)...The annual food event that makes arguably the biggest and loudest (marketing) splash around the world each year would be the arrival of Beaujolais Nouveau wine from France each year, I would suggest. It's pretty tasty wine, even if few wine enthusiasts would rate Beaujolais wine as the best that's out there (though myself, I do quite like it).Well, quietly Denmark also has it's own annual food traditions. One that never goes by unremarked upon is the arrival of the first New Dani sh Potatos ('Ny Danske Kartofler') each year. They're small, they're more or less round, and they look like basically any other small round potato out there - and they're rather expensive if you want to be one of the first to buy some each year. But it's a prestige thing for some local restaurants to get ahold of them as soon as they begin to appear. This year the first batch of New Potatoes was sold for 1000 kroner (125 Euro) for a kilogram (link in Danish). Target practise, anyone?
2007-05-07 02:36:00 'There seems to be an unusually large concentration of bicycles along Vesterbrogade today, we're going to check it out. Over and out.'Those regular readers may have noted that I occasionally direct a few derogatory comments at TV2 News, Denmark's 24 hour news channel (that just went into operation a few months ago).As I am involuntarily subjected to this channel for several hours each day at work, I have a pretty good idea at this point how the operate. For example, there was the recent extensive coverage of the Crown Prince and Princess putting their son into daycare for the first time, which extended on for several hours. I'm not kidding.TV2 News also managed to buy themselves a helicopter, the first news operation in Denmark to have such a thing. And this is what I want to talk about. Please, PLEASE, please - somebody stop them. The pedestrians of Copenhagen: (maybe) faster than speeding bullets
2007-05-06 01:29:00 by: Tim Anderson (timothyanderson2005@gmail.com)According to research by the British Council, Copenhagen is home to the second fastest walkers in the world. That is, on average, people walk very quickly. Who would have guessed it?Yet, somehow I find myself a bit skeptical of this claim. So I got to thinking, maybe, just maybe there is an explanation for these findings - one on 2 wheels.See, what if the researchers - overzealous to cover a wide range of walking spaces around the city - without realising it managed set up there measurement equipment in such a way that, though managing to avoid clocking car traffic speeds, actually ended up clocking not only pedestrians walking, but also bicycle speeds as well? No way, you sayy! Weeeeell....Maybe, just maybe, while setting up their measurement devices they got confused and thought many of the bike lanes were actually sidewalks. After all, unlike in most cities, there are bike lanes lining virtually every street in Copenhagen (and not o... More About: Bull , Speed , Speeding , Bullet

Dinner at Noma in Copenhagen: A little more than finely polished silverware
2007-04-25 16:08:00 While Copenhagen has long been considered a leading European city in terms of fashion and design, until recently the culinary delights to be found here were not exactly seen as one of the city's strong points. That is, restaurants (and food in general) in Copenhagen has rather lagged behind other cities of Europe (and elsewhere). But as the restaurant scene in Copenhagen continues to develop, it is fast changing for the better - from the high end on downwards. And Noma, a restaurant on the waterfront in Christianshavn, has leapt to the forefront of the high end thanks to events over the past while.Noma was recently awarded it's second Michelin star and has also just been ranked No. 15 in the world on Restaurant Magazine's World's 50 Best Restaurants - apparently a rather influential magazine in this area, if you're into those sorts of things. Naturally, price is not exactly factored into these rankings and awards - so bring your credit card.Actually, the full Noma gastronomical ... More About: Dinner , Polis , Little , More
Aha! Gotcha!
2007-04-22 09:20:00 An oddly satisfying moment occurred a couple nights ago coming home on the metro from visiting some friends out in Amager. Satisfying because it proved that even in Denmark, a place where there is a bureaucratic process for everything and, more importantly, a person responsible for overseeing each of these processes (and making sure every one is followed correctly and in a timely manner) - oversights do happen.Even lapses and oversights that would no doubt be considered rather serious by those of a more bureaucratically-oriented disposition (which is certainly not me). In fact, this one could even be given the onimous sounding classification of a safety issue.Yes, at Lergravsparken Metro station an elevator inspection date had actually passed without the scheduled inspection occurring. You heard it here first. It's reassuring knowing that even in Denmark the bureaucrats and inspectors are human. Oh, and we opted to take the elevator, anyway. better hurry up with that inspection boy...
Feist concert in Copenhagen cancelled - damn! (to be rescheduled...)
2007-04-21 18:27:00 I was rather disappointed when I received an email in my inbox today informing me that the Feist concert in Copenhagen tomorrow (that I was supposed to attend) has been cancelled.Last time Feist played in Copenhagen, she put on a great performance - it was a sold out show at Lille Vega for 300 people of so. This one was supposed to be at Store Vega in front of an even larger (and again sold out) crowd...apparently it will be rescheduled.About Feist.Feist is one of those artists that just grows on you. It doesn't take long. She writes brilliant songs that are seductively simple. Her voice is utterly unique and her videos, though relatively simple productions, have this compelling quality about them that just kind of grabs you. Just like her concerts. My first introduction to Feist was about 3 years ago, one of those seemingly random happy coincidences that occurs from time to time. 2007-04-20 16:35:00 So that's it, Danes are the happiest in Europe (or at least they were back in 2004 when this survey was compiled). Really. It's true. The statistics tell the story. From The Economist.com.Still, if you ask the average Dane how they feel about this idea, they will almost universally scoff at the notion. The feeling is generally that things could always be better. However if you ask me, well, I think it could well be true.Naturally there is always one thing or another could be improved. The amusing thing is that in Denmark , whatever your particular quibble, there's probably somebody already looking into it, working dilligently to change things. And you can probably find their phone number and email address. And they'll almost surely get get back to you (and promptly) if you drop them a message. The yes-men of Danish broadcasting: TV2 News mindlesslessly tows the global
2007-04-19 13:57:00 by: Tim Anderson (timothyanderson2005@gmail.com)Sitting in the office where I work, a media bureau, small flat screen TV's line the columns down the center of the office. Most play TV2 News , Denmark's 24 news channel, throughout the day.Almost constantly, for several hours all this morning, TV2 News focussed on the tragedy in Virginia involving the deranged gunman who ran amok. Not only that, the editors and producers at TV2 News chose to incessantly play the video the gunman sent to NBC, along with various still images of the gunman (waving his guns around). Why would TV2 News do this? Not only TV2 News, but all the other TV stations and news organisations around the world covering the story in a similar manner. Are the producers and editors of these news organisations so intellectually challenged, shortsighted and generally boneheaded that they cannot comprehend that by broadcasting the gunman's picture and his message, they are playing right into his hands - even when he's dead... 2007-04-11 18:00:00 by Tim Anderson (timothyanderson2005@gmail.com)is there an ice cream shortage in Copenhagen ?On pretty much any hot and sunny day in Copenhagen (in fact, it doesn't really need to be that hot, just sunny), at certain hours of the day you'll find queues like it was a supermarket twenty-five years ago in Eastern Europe suffering a food shortage.Alas, it's not a shortage of food that drives the crowds toward Paradis in Copenhagen, rather it's a shortage of comparably tasty ice cream to be found anywhere else in the city. Really f#%*ing tasty ice cream. How good would I say Paradis ice cream is?Well, in the office where I've been working the past couple months Ben and Jerry's, one of the most popular American style ice creams, is stocked in the freezer for staff to help themselves to. Help! I'm selling my apartment in Copenhagen. What should I do?
2007-04-03 01:10:00 It's hard to imagine a relatively dry article about the housing market in Copenhagen - The sound of the popping bubble: A bit about psychology and Copenhagen's housing market - a recent article on this blog, going over especially well. Especially as it also happened to be a rather long article - even by my own rather, ahem, lengthy standards. To my surprise, up to now it is the article that has generated the most emails of any of the articles on this blog. Even more amazingly, it's actually one of the top google hits for 'Copenhagen housing market' at the moment, which is rather funny. So here's a slightly shorter follow-up.The issue of the buying, selling, renting and moving apartments - and the general state of the Copenhagen housing market - are all subjects that tend occupy a rather significant mental space in the minds of many of those living here (myself included - we're in the process of moving apartments right now). A stroll down Istedgade (Part 3): Istedgade the Nightowl
2007-03-30 12:04:00 By: Tim Anderson (timothyanderson2005@gmail.com)Following on the heals of Part 1 and Part 2 of this Istedgade series, the focus of this one will be the trendier end of Istedgade, let's call that 'upper Istedgade'. What could be referred to as 'lower Istedgade' (or 'Istedgade the Hooker' and 'Istedgade the Junkie') are areas of the street offering their own distinct set of nightlife possibilities - and these will be the subject of part 5 of this series...Istedgade by night is pretty good, indeed. Bars and cafés abound. It's not wall-to-wall cafes or anything like that - that would in all liklihood prove to be hugely problematic. Furthermore, the target clientel at the establishment of Istedgade trendier places are not those planning to end the night in a mess of sloppy drunkiness (even if a good few end up this way, nonetheless). 2007-03-29 08:50:00 The Sound s - struttin' their stuff at Vega in CopenhagenAs I've mentionned before, there is nothing better than having a good, loud, guitar driven rock band to watch in the middle of the work week to liven things up a bit.Last night at Vega in Copenhagen, a fairly excitable crowd witnessed an outstanding performance by The Sounds, from Sweden, and Under The Influence of Giants, from California. In a way, the concert was something of a throwback. A true rock 'n roll show. Both bands have evidently earned Master's degrees at the University of Rock 'n roll (or are well on their way to doing so), with the stage presence of the lead singer in each band more than worthy of the moniker 'rock star'. If any of the numerous performers who could be counted among the Gods of Rock had they witnessed last nights performances - one of those performers who has wandered through the hallowed halls of rock 'n roll stardom - they would have surely nodded their heads approvingly. And when The Soun... 2007-03-18 11:25:00 by Tim Anderson (timothyanderson2005@gmail.com)Sometimes seedy, with it’s graffiti and hookers, other times trendy with it’s design shops and cafés, Istedgade is a street of complex character. It’s not so easy to put a finger on just what Istedgade is and where it is heading in the future - which makes it a fascinating spot on the Copenhagen map. But the next several articles (yep, this is the first of five of them) will try to.Allow me to make a slightly abstract comparison between Woody Allan movies and Istedgade, the street in Vest erbro with, well, many faces. I love Woody Allen movies. Istedgade, like many a character in many a Woody Allen film, happens to be of a slightly neurotic temperment. This is pretty evident when strolling along the street and perhaps that’s part of the reason why I like it so much.despite the street art, it's hardly scary...Of the two main (almost parallel) roads that transverse Vesterbro and infuse the area with life, Istedgade and Vesterbrog... Introducing: The Danish Citizenship Test
2007-03-07 08:00:00 by: Tim Anderson (timothyanderson2005@gmail.com)If there is one thing that can be said about the current government in Denmark, it's that they are becoming rather predictable.Needing the proudly xenophobic/racist Dansk Folkeparti to prop up their minority government, the government has developed a nasty little habit of throwing their support behind various proposals propogating the idea of 'Danishness' (thereby helping to ward off perceived threats to whatever it is that this so-called 'Danishness' is...). The D ansk Folkeparti loves squeezing out these sorts of legislative turds from the bowels of their parliamentary caucus, as they are the self-proclaimed protectors of the Danish society and cultural identity in parliament. An eye-witness account of the 'riot' events of last week in Copenhagen
2007-03-05 00:32:00 My good friend Marcin ended up caught in the 'Ungdomshuset support' melee, and has written an excellent firsthand account of what he witnessed and experienced happening on the streets of Norrebro in Copenhagen during the demonstrations on Thursday and Friday night. His account says it all (and definitely says something about how it is to live in Copenhagen) and strikes me as a little more nuanced and informative then the way the events were portrayed on television - particularly by the 'live-on-the-scene' reporters. Marcin's description is so enlightening (and entertaining) that I've quoted it below. So here's what he wrote - enjoy!"Pamplona has its bull running, Manila its crucifixion reenactments, and Copenhagen its royal weddings...and occasional street riots. So what follows is a small, subjective eyewitness account about being in Norrebro on Thursday and Friday night.I think Tim's comment comes very close to explaining the cause of all the 'ballede': "opportunists usi... The Ungdomshuset action continues (but what to make of it all?)
2007-03-03 14:52:00 Okay, this whole Ungdomshuset issue is getting rather confusing.First, an update.Following the eviction of Ungdomshuset in Copenhagen (click here for a little background on this) on Thursday, plenty of action has occurred Friday and today. Some of it obnoxiously violent and destructive (like a school in Christianshavn in Copenhagen getting looted and heavily damaged and a lot of cars getting torched yesterday). It seems an undefined portion of it was caused by troublemakers coming in from abroad in order to get in on the action. That is, opportunists using the Ungdomshuset controversy to attract attention to themselves.Once again, thanks is in order to TV2 News (and all the rest of the mainstream media) for playing right into their hands with their largely superficial but in-your-face coverage. The police, it seems, have done a good job arresting those causing the violence, and expelling a number of people from the country. What choice did they have? There has been a lot of peaceful ... Must have been big news!the TV2 News helicopter - in action over UngdomshusetYeah, I suppose. The police tried to clear out Ungdomshuset early this morning with predictable results (fighting, riot police, etc.) - apparently they succeeded. The aftermath of this carried on throughout the day, with a good number of people arrested (100-200 hundred, by some reports). In fact, at this moment there are a couple demonstrations in support of Ungdomshuset going on.
