Maui Hawaii Celebrate Gay Marriage this Week
2012-01-06 16:08:00
Paradise is a strong word, and I don't use it lightly. But Maui , Hawaii is truly a paradise in every way. It has glorious warm weather all year, with just enough of a breeze from the trade winds to keep you feeling refreshed. The tropical greenery and colourful flowers are spectacular, and there's nothing better than the relaxing sound of the surf crashing on the beach as you drift off to sleep every night. Wouldn't you want to get married in Paradise?! A gay Oklahoma City couple is happy to be on Maui and among the first couples to be joined in a civil union after a state law allowing such unions went into effect last  Sunday. "We are proud to be part of it," said 40-year-old Rich Tucker, a mortgage company owner, shortly before his Monday sunset ceremony with partner 37-year-old David Dobson, a Realtor. "We wanted to have the ceremony somewhere tropical. It's awesome to have accepting people that accept everyone. No one is segregated," Tucker said about Hawaii and...

Gay Marriage Comes to Cancun Mexico in 2012 #gaytravel
2011-12-31 00:10:00
Everybody wants a piece of that pink dollar! The city-state of Mexico City legalized gay marriage in 2010 and remains the only municipality in Mexico where such marriages are officially allowed. Now  Cancun and other resort areas on the Mexican Caribbean will have a new attraction for gay and lesbian couples from the US, Canada  and Europe, allowing them to legalize their unions thanks to a quirk in the local civil code, activist Patricia Novelo.Novelo said that in January the first same-sex group wedding will be held in the resort area as part of local support for the human rights of the gay community.Gay travel groups in the state say they are now preparing to market the state as a destination for gay couples to marry and will promote a mass wedding of gay couples sometime in January. (It was not clear whether the first 8 confirmed couples would wed in separate ceremonies.)The gay travel groups say that travel agencies on average receive about 200 requests per month fro...

Annual Gay Travel Data from Community Marketing
2011-12-20 14:13:00
NEW YORK CITY is  #1, again, for the 16th year in a row, as the #1 Gay Destination. San Francisco-based Community Marketing , Inc. just released their yearly data. And while some of the results will be less-than-shocking (gay New York City gets high scores, as does gay Miami and gay New Orleans), there are still a few surprises in the 40-page report. The 16th annual survey of its kind analyzes online responses from more than 6,700 U.S. residents and 540 Canadians, completed between September 20 and October 31, 2011.Based on the survey and Department of Commerce tourism statistics, CMI estimates that gay and lesbian tourism generates more than $65 billion a year in the U.S. alone. Here are  some of the more interesting findings of this year?s survey:1. Economy be damned! Overall, the gay and lesbian community reported more trips in the past 12 months, while travel had been down in the past two years? surveys. Both men and women took an average of more than three leisur...

2011-11-30 16:42:00
AMR Corporation, the parent company of American Airlines , Inc. and AMR Eagle Holding Corporation (American Eagle), announced yesterday that it filed voluntary petitions for Chapter 11 reorganization in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York.American Airlines passengers should not expect any near-term changes, but the bankruptcy filing may affect their future plans. The Chapter 11 reorganization of American Airlines and its parent company AMR Corp could lead to a shakeup in prices, fewer flights and an altered flying experience.American sent a letter on Tuesday to its frequent flyers saying, "We want to assure you that your AAdvantage miles are secure," and noting its intent to honor existing program awards.Airlines tend to protect their mileage programs throughout bankruptcy, he said, because they make money selling miles to credit card issuers, and even passengers trading in miles fill seats and spend money.American may cut prices to keep planes full ...

Amtrak Dealing With WiFi Gay Issues This week
2011-11-08 18:02:00
Despite opposition from anti-gay groups such a the Family Research Institute, in recent years, Amtrak has been very active in marketing to the LGBT communities. While they are not painting the cars rainbow colors anytime soon,  they  are  a member of the International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association; and they operate a website design specifically for LGBT travelers, Amtrakridewithpride.com; and has been a sponsors of many gay events.Last week Amtrak  confirmed that it is conducting a soft launch of free WiFi service on its Northeast Regional trains, which include those serving Washington, DC. WiFi is already available on its Acela trains, some regional trains on the west coast and at select stations. Amtrak is expect to provide a formal update next week about its expansion efforts.Of course they are trying to block porn on the train.  But some LGBT news sites were also blocked. Christina Leeds, a media representative for Amrak, also acknowled...

A Battle for the Pink Gay Travel Dollars... Beirut vs. Tel Aviv
2010-10-27 22:52:00
We all know, Gay tourism is a multi-billion-dollar industry. EVERYONE wants our money. And is this economy, it's amazing how many cities have decided GAY IS OK! And are rolling out the red carpet for us!And  two Mediterranean cities are both angling for a piece of the action. The two hotspots, each boasting trendy nightlife, warm climate and carefree attitude, are vying for the pink dollars of the world?s gay tourists. Tel Aviv, Israel?s cultural and business capital, has already earned its place as a must-go destination for globe-trotting gays, and now Beirut is making its pitch, too. ?Western travelers come to us to feel the Arabian spirit,? Bertho Makso, Lebanon?s first and perhaps best-known gay travel operator, told The Media Line . ?And Arabs have come to feel more comfortable.? Beirut and Tel Aviv are less than 200 kilometers (125 miles) apart on the Mediterranean coast, but two-city package tours for gays are not  going to be offered anytime soon. Israel and Lebanon ...

Gay Travel and ReLocation to Maryland and Mount Rainier
2010-10-26 15:54:00
Mount Rainier   is a city in Prince George's County, Maryland .  Bordering Washington, DC, Mount Rainier got its start as a streetcar suburb.According to local tradition, surveyors from the Pacific Northwest named the town, giving the streets names such as "Shasta" and "Cascade". Mount Rainier has attracted a significant gay and lesbian population. In 2000, same-sex couples accounted for 1.0 percent of households, almost double the national average. IN fact, in 2004, gay and lesbian families were showing up in greater numbers in the nation's suburbs and rural areas. The trend is a product both of migration from the cities and of cultural changes that have encouraged same-sex couples to become more visible . Maryland Gov. Martin O?Malley, a Democrat, told a radio caller Thursday he would sign a gay marriage bill ? if he?s re-elected  and the state legislature were to pass one. Malley had previously only been in favor of civil unions. These fabulous photos were sent to us from ...

LGBTQ2 Transgender Travel Information and Tips
2010-10-22 21:21:00
It was brought to my attention the other day that we never address the transgender community here on this Gay Travel site. So we wanted to include some resources and tips - Transgender people have as much right to travel as anyone else and we have a right to express any gender we want, any way we want while traveling (with the exception of some head and face coverings). However, recent heightened airport security has meant increased scrutiny, harassment, and discrimination against trans people who fly. NCTE hopes this document will help make your air travel experience smoother. This document for transgendered travel is little dated, but provides some useful guidelines. In 2009,  2009-The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) rolled out a new phase of their Secure Flight program over the weekend. Passengers will now be required to provide their birth date and gender when they book an airline ticket as part of a move to help distinguish passengers from those on the governmen...

Being Smart With Your Phone Traveling Overseas
2010-10-14 15:26:00
Last year we did an article about traveling with our iPhone .  Common sense told me that international roaming rates would be outrageous - so I barely made any calls. Only 2. To my mother and  my  mother  in law!  Roughly  $2.30  per minute. A  15 minute call  was  $35! Ouch! I should have sent postcards! I guess I am naive...or stupid...I really  didn't  think  about  roaming  charges  being  applied  to  texts and that data usage could be an issue. The iPhone, with all it's  delicious apps and bells and whistles -  SUCKS  DATA. Most domestic plans here in the US  have  unlimited  data, so few users, like me, bother to track the amount I send and receive. Shame on me. When you travel to overseas, AT & T offers a pricey a la carte menu which is almost impossible for the simple mind like mine, to decipher. I don't know how many  bytes of this and that I am going to need to read emails!  How is that even calculated? I flunked  Algebra! And every country has different rates...

Kent Connecticut Is Becoming The Place For Nuptials, Hiking, Camping and S
2010-10-09 16:03:00
GUEST AUTHOR LYNDON EVANS shares his take on Kent, Connecticut . When folks think of travel and tourism in Connecticut most think of the southeastern part of the state from Essex/Deep River over to Mystic and up to the casino area of Uncasville and Mashantucket. But I?d like to tell you about my part of Connecticut the western side. Recently the Litchfield County Times ran an article by Kathryn Boughton about same-sex marriage and how the village of Kent is becoming the place to celebrate nuptials. A quiet revolution has been taking place in Kent as same-sex couples have made their way to the beautiful little town to solemnize their marriage vows. Town Clerk Darlene Brady said that the number of marriage licenses issued in the town has more than doubled since a New York State minister started to promote Kent as a location for gay and lesbian weddings. She reports there have been 161 gay marriages in Kent since 2008 and another 13 civil unions performed before that. Also boosting th...

Southwest and AirTran Merger a ?Big Win? for Gay Lesbian Travel
2010-10-01 03:20:00
The DC Gay Travel Examiner, Troy Petenbrink, reports that the pending merger of AirTran and Southwest airlines (announced this week)  appears to be a big win for gay travelers. While AirTran has generally remained invisible when it comes to marketing to gay travelers and supporting the gay community, Southwest has been flying sky high. Southwest is a member of the International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association and has been a supporter of many gay events, including Washington, DC?s Capital Pride. In addition, Southwest operates a corporate-wide gay-specific micro-site: SouthWest GayTravel .  On the site the company states, ?Southwest Airlines is a Company that works hard every day to provide Positively Outrageous Customer Service, regardless of race, religion, and sexuality.  It?s in our DNA and goes to the heart of our Culture of Freedom, inclusiveness, and living and practicing the Golden Rule.? Assuming that Southwest retains AirTran?s current gates, the merger will result in S...

Gay Travel to Costa Rica
2010-09-29 18:03:00
So, how do Costa Rica ns view gay people? Can I kiss in public? Are there any nude gay beaches? Gay friendly hotels? Get your answers HERE! Costa Rica decriminalized homosexuality between consenting adults in the 1970s. Since then, a series of legal rulings, on a judicial as well as administrative level, have turned things around for Costa Rican lesbians and gay men. The Costa Rica constitution makes the Catholic Church the official state religion (church and state is not separated in Costa Rica), and about 80% or more of the country is Catholic. So, you can imagine where the gay lifestyle sits in their eyes. Gay Costa Rica citizens are still fighting their straight counterparts so they can have the same benefits that heterosexual couples receive such as inheritance rights, pensions, and tax rights to name a few. Besides the Catholics in Costa Rica, the gay community here is battling against the Evangelicals in Costa Rica, who came out 20,000 strong from all over Costa Rica...

Lesbian Travel and Festival at Eressos on Greece's Lesbos island
2010-09-17 16:53:00
It's  September and for a 10th year, the village of Eressos on Greece's Lesbos island has drawn lesbians from across Europe to a unique international festival for women. In a country strongly influenced by the Greek Orthodox church and where roughly half the population is against same-sex marriage, the lesbian-run event has been quietly growing in this corner of the Aegean Sea. Over the past decade, attendance at the two-week International Women's Festival has jumped from 30 to hundreds of women - mainly German, British, Dutch and Scandinavian, but also Greek and Italian. Lesbian s began to visit the island in the 70s, and have been coming back ever since. Tensions have been high at times and trouble has  brewed in the past. Three Lesbians (natives of the island of Lesbos)  submitted a legal challenge in an attempt to stop the Homosexual and Lesbian Community of Greece (OLKE) from using the term "lesbian". The use of the word to denote a sexual preference derives from the islan...

2010-09-16 15:52:00
Scandinavian airline SAS  plans to host the first-ever in-flight gay wedding in December, and is searching for a suitable couple to walk down the airplane aisle. "It will be a very traditional wedding," SAS spokesman Anders Lindstroem told AFP. "There will be wedding cake and dancing in the aisles." SAS has 100 gay couples in the running, with the winning entry will be chosen by an online vote . The ceremony itself would need to take place in Swedish airspace, where gay marriage is legal. As part of SAS Airlines ? big new social media contest campaign titled "Love is in the Air"  on December 6, the winning gay or lesbian European-based couple get flown via SAS from Stockholm to New York, and on the way they?ll take over an entire business class cabin and have their same-sex nuptials performing in-flight by the plane?s captain.  Once they land, the newlyweds will enjoy a glam U.S. honeymoon, staying two nights at one of NYC?s finer W Hotels and then jetting off to L.A. for three nigh...

Buenos Aires Sets Up PINK POINT for the Gay Lesbian Traveler
2010-09-12 15:20:00
The city of Buenos Aires has long been regarded as one of the hottest international destinations for gay tourism. Now, with the passing of the Same Sex Marriage Law in Argentina, the country has already seen a surge in gay travel. Yet some, who have never been, wonder whether Buenos Aires really is as gay-friendly as it seems to be. Unlike many cities known for being gay friendly, there is no ?district? in Buenos Aires housing a slew of gay bars and nightclubs. This often makes it difficult for gay tourists to find exactly what it is they are looking for. There is nothing worse than being in strange territory, trying to navigate your way around. ?A lot of gay students and tourists that come to Buenos Aires get lost in this big jungle of a city, and without any specific districts or signs to help them out, it can be overwhelming,? said Erik Hovenga, Managing Director of Ecole del Sur Travel Agency and founder of The Royal Family , a gay-friendly language school. ?The truth is, Bu...

State Department Worldwide Travel Alert

The Christian minister of a small church in Florida canceled on Thursday his plan to burn copies of the Quran that had been scheduled for Saturday, the ninth anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attacks on the United State s.  The planned protest had sparked angry demonstrations by Muslims around the world.   The Reverend Terry Jones announced his change of heart at a news conference late Thursday in front of his church in Gainesville, Florida. Jones said he called off the Quran burning protest because he had secured an agreement with Muslim leaders in New York City to move the location of a controversial planned Islamic center and mosque away from the site of the 2001 terrorist attacks known as Ground Zero in lower Manhattan. "The American people do not want the mosque there and, of course, Muslims do not want us to burn the Quran," said Terry Jones. "The imam has agreed to move the mosque.  We have agreed to cancel our event on Saturday.  And on Saturday, I will be flying up there...
