Hardwick VT Featured in Yankee Magazine
2010-07-31 20:30:00 Once the site of a thriving granite mine, Hardwick VT became a pleasant but hardscrabble looking town after the mine closed. Then it got hit by a major fire five years ago which destroyed several important old buildings in the middle of town. But it has made an admirable comeback in recent years. Most of that is due to the local food movement. Several articles have appeared with headlines along the lines of : "The Town That Food Saved."The current issue of Yankee Magazine now describes Hardwick as "The Center for an Agricultural Economy." It was written by Bill McKibben, a Vermont resident famous for his work on global warming. Mr. McKibben writes about some of the key people involved with the local food movement including the local investor funded restaurant, Claire's, and organic seed producer, High Mowing Seeds. It's an interesting read and provides insight into many of the related types of activities going on in Vermont today. Jeff Connor Grunberg Haus, located about half... More About: Featured
VT Lodging Featured in Huffinton Post
2010-07-26 02:01:00 I've been a Vermont inn owner for ten years and I still come across a few new inns each month that I've not heard of before. If memory serves, I think I read years ago that there are 1800 some lodging facilities in little ole Vermont but I just read an article about a place that may top them all. I had never heard of Twin Farms in Barnard VT until I came across an article about it in the Huffington Post . In summary: WOW! I'm familiar with top shelf places like Rabbit Hill Inn and the Pitcher Inn but Twin Farms is something else. There are 20 accommodations including suites each with fireplace, full bath; plus cottages of different designs and each in its own secluded environment, set throughout the property's 300 acres. Take a look at Twin Farms website's photos - these cottages would make fine primary residences for most people. I love the rustic Vermont theme incorporated in many of them. Naturally, we always want to know the rate. Sit down and hang on. Rates at the Twin ... More About: Featured
Moose Watch
2010-07-21 23:02:00 Photo credit: www.central-vt.com/moose "Montpelier, Vermont, the nation's smallest capital city had an unexpected visitor Monday, July 19th as a moose wandered leisurely during the lunch hour. This picture was taken by an administrative assistant at Vermont State Housing Authority on 1 Prospect in the city. A co-worker, Lindsay White, remarked that she loves the ruralness of Vermont, and this was the exclamation point of the day! " I think the most frequent question we get from guests is "Where's a good place for dinner?" A close second is "Where can we go to see moose?" Answering the first question is easy because we have dozens of good restaurants in the immediate area.Answering the second question is tougher because we don't have dozens of moose hanging around nearby. We have one (perhaps more) around the inn that must come through about once a week judging by the fresh tracks we see that often. In fact a guest and his family last week pulled into our driveway one evening to... More About: Watch
Draft Horse Days at Billings Farm
2010-06-19 19:09:00 Copyright © 2010 Billings Farm & Museum As mentioned below, if you are visiting the Quechee Balloon Festival today or tomorrow, I recommend a trip over to nearby Woodstock. It's one of my favorite towns in Vermont. And one of my favorite places in Woodstock is the Billings Farm and Museum, a beautiful facility. This weekend, Billings Farm is holding Draft Horse Days from 10:00 to 5:00 both days. There will be demonstrations and activities showcasing Billings Farm's draft horses, including traditional fieldwork, horse shoeing, horse-drawn wagon rides. Draft horses teams will demonstrate plowing, planting, cultivating, and mowing in the farm fields during narrated programs at 11:00 a.m., 1:00, and 3:00 p.m. each day. Each morning will begin with braiding the horse's mane and tails. There will also be shoeing demonstrations on the farm's Percheron, making horseshoes, and rope making. Children can learn how to make clothespin horses, take part in hobby horse races, and play ...
Quechee Balloon Festival June 18 - 20
2010-06-19 14:51:00 One of central Vermont's most popular events is taking place this weekend. The 31st annual Quechee Balloon Festival features about 20 hot air balloons which launch twice a day at 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. In some cases, they can accommodate passengers and there will also be tethered balloon flights. About 60 craft vendors are there and there is music, food, and children's activities. The deepest gorge in Vermont is located in Quechee and the town is known for its antique stores and shopping opportunities. While you are in the area, I recommend a visit to Woodstock VT, one of the most picturesque villages in New England. Woodstock is located a short drive west on Route 4 from Quechee. Stowe Summer Attractions Open This Weekend
2010-06-16 03:00:00 Stowe Alpine SlideThis Saturday, June 19, Stowe opens its summer attractions including my favorite, the Alpine Slide. This adventure starts with a chair lift ride to the top of Spruce Peak Mountain. At the top, you are given a plastic sled on wheels and directed to one of the two parallel fiberglass tracks. The starter, one of the many young people from all over the world who serve as summer interns, holds the people going down and lets them go about every minute or so to allow plenty of separation from other people on the same track. You're not supposed to race the person in the track next to you but the starter sends you both at the same time so who's to say you can't get a little competitive? The track has curved sides to help hold the cart in. You would have to be going crazy fast to fly off a corner but, of course, a few people have found a way to do that. The ride is very safe if you don't take wild chances. You control the sled with a stick between your legs: push forwar... More About: Summer , Attractions , Open , Weekend
Waterside Dining in Vermont
2010-05-05 18:08:00 One of the new Vermont travel blogs I've been reading for the past few months is called Love Vermont. It's written by Katherine Kerrigan who describes herself as a "girl who fell in love with a state and a state of mind" which is actually a common situation in Vermont and one that applies to me and many others who find their way here as well. Her blog yesterday is especially helpful for Vermont travelers looking to find unique dining experiences. "top ten tuesdays - waterfront dining" is a great little article with quick reviews of the best dining next to lakes, ponds, and rivers throughout the state. I've only eaten at four of the ten restaurants so I have some work to do. But in a state awash in great dining, it takes more than the decade I've been here to get to a large number of them let alone all of them. But that's part of the charm I suppose - the never ending discovery of new places to enjoy Vermont. One word of advice about one of the restaurants, Hen of the Wood loc... More About: Dining
Round Barn Inn on YouTube
2010-04-18 03:11:00 The Inn at the Round Barn is one of my favorite places in Vermont. It's in a beautiful valley a few minutes drive from the village of Waitsfield. It's not only a great place to stay but also the perfect venue for a Vermont country wedding if you're in the market for such a dream event. Dave Hartshorn, shown in the video, owns a farm and farm stand nearby on Route 100 - - about half way between my inn and the Inn at the Round Barn. He has vegetables, maple syrup, honey, and other goodies on hand most of the summer and early fall. It's worth a stop just to see rural Vermont at work. I have had the good fortune to sample some of chef Charlie Menard's creations and I am happy to confirm that his work is outstanding.Jeff Connor Grunberg Haus More About: Youtube
Tour Vermont With an Expert Photographer
2010-04-18 01:46:00 Here's a great way to get a personalized tour of the most picturesque parts of Vermont and also get some help in photographing it all. It's like getting two for the price of one! Steve Mermelstein is a professional photographer who makes a living doing commercial, fine art, and wedding photography. He also operates VT Photo Tour s, a company in South Burlington Vermont that escorts small groups of people to photograph some of the most picturesque scenery around this beautiful state. You can see some client samples here. Not only does Steve know where to go, he knows what time of day to be there to get the best light. As someone who has found a great scene but was unable to get a good photo because I was facing straight into the sun, I know the value of being at the right place at the right time. Magic Hat Presents World's First Twitter Pub Crawl?
2010-04-16 05:15:00 If it's not the world's first Twitter Pub Crawl , it definitely is Burlington VT's first. And who else but Magic Hat would put on such an event. It's scheduled for April 22, 2010 at 7:00 pm and it is structured as a team event. Throughout the night each four person team will receive clues from Magic Hat via Twitter on which pub to go to. At the end of the night, Magic Hat will check each team to see if they made it to each pub. The names of all the successful teams will be put in a drawing to determine the overall winner. Each person on the winning team gets the top prize of a round trip ticket from JetBlue to wherever the airline flies. All proceeds will go to The Committee on Temporary Shelter (COTS). The cost to each team is just $5 per person. Also, the entry price includes one of the coolest looking T-shirts I have seen in a long time. That alone has to be worth a lot more than $5. Two Beer Festivals in VT This Weekend

On Saturday, September 26, Siptemberfest is taking place at Mad River Glen on Route 17 near Waitsfield VT. Some of Vermont's best known brewers will be there: Magic Hat, Long Trail, Rock Art, Trout River, Otter Creek, Wolavers. In addition to the "big guys," the festival will present an unusual opportunity to sample local beer from Lawson's Finest Liquids plus beers that are only available on the premises at The Alchemist Pub and Brewery, Bobcat Cafe, and American Flatbread. The Skinny Pancake will be making their crepes on site and the Mad River Glen Pub will be serving food as well. Mad River Glen will be running their single chair lift for fall foliage viewing. British Sports Cars and American Hot Rods Travel to VT This Weekend
2009-09-16 17:08:00 I just posted a few photos from the 2007 British Invasion on Flickr to give you a small sampling of what this car show is about. As mentioned in my September 6 blog entry below, there will be hundreds of beautiful British cars from old to new. The British Invasion web site has more details. My friends from the Classic Bike Experience will be there as well to display some British Motorcycles. The Boston Sunday Globe named this event as their number one choice for "Best 10 things to do within a day's drive of Boston." And the Vermont Chamber of Commerce has named it several years in a row as a Top Ten Event in Vermont. The event will be held at the Stowe Events Field on Weeks Hill Road, just off Route 108. It runs this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. On the same weekend, there's a very large street rod show at the Champlain Expo Center put on by the National Street Rod Association. British Invasion Car Show, Stowe, September 18 - 20
2009-09-06 21:11:00 A boy and his car.My first car was a 1959 MGA. I bought it for $350 and sold it a few months later, a deal I had to make with my parents to get them to acquiesce to what I thought was one of the greatest ideas of all time: me in a sleek, fast, and nimble car to try out my inestimable driving skillI sold it for the same amount I had bought it for and I broke even except for gas plus all the polish, wax, and other chemicals I put on or in it. I enjoyed - no, make that - LOVED, driving the MG that summer. I spent hours each day driving or working on that car. It has rusted out rocker panels which I carefully scrapped out and painted rust-proof silver. With a meticulousness worthy of a new category of dementia, I sanded each wheel and sprayed them in short stages with the leftover paint from the rocker panel project. There was not one run in the paint. Of course, it took me more than a week of light spraying to achieve that. And I had to mask the tires each time to keep overspray off th... Vermont Moose
2009-08-22 02:26:00 Mad River Glen moose population has grown by two this year. One of the most frequent questions we get here at the inn is "where can we go to see a moose?" There are several areas nearby where the possibility is greater but sighting a moose is a rare occurrence even for people who live and work in the forests. The moose photo at the top of this Vermont Travel Notes blog is a good example. It was taken by a guest in early November several years ago while he was driving on Route 100 between Warren and Granville VT, a popular place to spot moose because of the swampy areas alongside the road. It's not a particularly good photo because he quickly took the shot through the car windshield. He got some better quality photos after he stopped the car and got out but by then the moose was into the woods and walking away so the angle of the photo does not work well. But he was lucky to see it at all. If he had left here a minute earlier or a minute later he would have missed the moose entirely.... More About: Nature , Advice
