2008-05-30 16:46:00
For those of you with as bad a compass as me, you'll be pleased to know that I've just added and greatly improved my map section, to include an embedded Glasgow Street Map on my site that can be zoomed in and out, dragged around, and in which you can view street names as well as see the satellite image of your favourite buildings and attractions.Have a look around, and if you still need a point in the right direction, just whisk yourself over to my Getting Around Glasgow section.Have a safe and relaxing journey...
Imperial Rooms at Stavka Glasgow - Just like being back in the U.S.S.R.
2008-05-29 17:06:00
I'm getting there - only a few more reviews to go and the Glasgow Restaurants section will finally be complete. Yey...Here's my little take on Stavka Glasgow Imperial Rooms, one of the best Glasgow Russian restaurants and proudly in my Top Ten of all the restaurants in Glasgow.Learn all about the four outstanding rooms there (Tsarskaya Dacha Cocktail Lounge, Dvor Baltika Courtyard, Imperial Rooms Restaurant, and Na Zdorovye), and spend a unique evening enjoying delicious cuisine and cocktails that have been inspired by the largely misunderstood history and people of Russia. It really is a place that stands out from the rest in Glasgow, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do on a regular basis.

Mix it up with the Orchestra+ Glasgow Festival
2008-05-27 10:57:00
Between 19th and 26th June this year, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra is hosting a pretty unique and progressive three concert festival at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall.On the 19th, you'll have the chance to see the ground-breaking Concerto for Turntables, which has been billed as pushing the boundaries of classical music by merging it with Hip Hop, and alongside the RSNO it'll feature the experimentalist Gabriel Prokofiev and the original and critically-acclaimed DJ Beni G.On the 21st the British Pop Icon Elvis Costello will join the stage with the RSNO, and will perform some of his greatest hits like Accidents Will Happen, Shipbuilding, and God Give Me Strength, and the RSNO will also perform extracts from Costellos first orchestral work II Sogno (The Dream), which was originally penned for a Ballet version of Shakespeares Midsummer Nights Dream. Finally, you might think that the legendary video games like Mario, Zelda, Sonic the Hedgehog and Halo have absolutely nothing t...

2008-05-21 15:34:00

All in all, a day out in Pollok Country Park with the Pollok House and Burrell Collection will leave you feeling completely relaxed and enriched with culture, a few hours of escape from the vibrant, pulsating City beyond...

Here's an extract from a wee article from the Evening Times newspaper.Friendly Glasgow a hit for touristsBy John McCannA WARM-HEARTED Glasgow welcome is still the biggest selling point for Scotland's best city, overseas visitors say.Foreign tourists in a survey named spending time with 'friendly people' as their holiday highlight ahead of the city's shops and cultural attractions. But Kelvingrove and the Gallery of Modern Art remain the biggest attractions for UK-based holidaymakers. The 2007 Glasgow Visitor Survey found that 22 percent, almost a quarter, of foreign visitors loved the bonhomie of ordinary Glasgow punters.Almost 75 percent of all holidaymakers quizzed said they were on their second or subsequent visit here. And 69 percent said the city was the main or only reason for their trip to the UK.The study, by marketing group LJ Research, polled more than 3000 people throughout last year.Visitors gave the range and quality of attractions, accommodation and tourist informat...
Pollok Country Park - Voted Best in Europe
2008-02-28 10:51:00
Well done Pollok Country Park .It's just beaten off stiff competition from Poland, France, Sweden and Germany to pick up the coveted award of the best park in Europe , having already won the title for being the UK's best park.In the park you'll experience plenty of open space for a walk in the woods, a mountain bike trail, the countryside rangers' centre, the world famous Burrell Collection and of course, the much loved Pollok House.Pollok Park has been in the news recently because of the controversial plans to build a Go Ape centre like the one in Aberfoyle, but regardless of whether or not it gets the go ahead, I'd certainly suggest that if you've some time to spare on your next trip to Glasgow, you should try to find a space for this outstanding attraction. In my mind it's one of the top ten Glasgow attractions, and once I've a few minutes to spare myself, I'll be completing a wee guide about it. If anyone has any photos of the park they'd like to share in the meantime, fe...

Sparkling new guide to cycling Glasgow
2008-02-13 22:11:00
Well I'm completely out of puff now.Just polished off a wee guide to cycling Glasgow , and if you take a look you'll learn why Glasgow and the haunting terrain of Scotland beyond has a reputation for cycling, and in particular mountain biking, which stands above that of every other country on the planet. Not bad for a City and Country with a tiresome rep for being fat and deeply in love with all things deep-fried...

The Quiet Riot Glasgow
2008-01-31 10:48:00
I'm always happy to support exciting new opportunities for a great night out in Glasgow , and have been hearing some great stuff about something called The Quiet Riot that's recently started up here.Basically, it's held every Thursday night from 9pm in The Drawing Room Bar, which is at the Charing Cross end of Sauchiehall Street in the City Centre. The idea is that every week there's some high quality music and entertainment (completely free for a change) from some up and coming acts, and an open mike section at the start for performers looking to play to a pumped audience (if you're up for showing off your talents you'll be happy to note that you'll get some free beers just for turning up and playing).I'm planning to head along soon to sample what I've been hearing is a pretty cool atmosphere, something new to start the weekend, but if any of you beat me to it I'd love to hear your take on it.

New Sunday Sloans Market Glasgow
2008-01-29 13:24:00
Following on from the Council's recent look into how best to revamp our City Centre lanes, and from the brilliant success of the great wee Christmas Market organised by Sloans (Glasgow 's oldest Bar and Restaurant), it's just been announced that we're now going to be treated to a regular Sloans Market every Sunday in the lane bridging Buchanan Street and Argyle Street. It's all due to kick off next month with around 40 unique craft, veg and general stalls from the City's independent traders and artists being set up, and a 'Cake Heaven' and more funky stalls in the middle at Sloans Bar and Restaurant. There's also an inspired plan to use Morrison Court right outside the bar and if the weather's decent, have a regular BBQ there (which pretty much ensures that I'll be there every week). This kind of thing will do wonders for the City Centre, and give visitors and shoppers a really good opportunity to browse leisurely around the type of creative and artistic stalls you'd normall...

Fly the Flag
2008-01-22 10:01:00
Well spotted, to those of you who noticed my sparkling new favicon. I thought I'd sneak it in there yesterday without you noticing, but clearly I'm no good at sneaking, judging by the number of emails about Scottish pride I received as a result. If you can't see it, it's likely you've got Internet Explorer as a browser, and will have to refresh yourself. Just press CTRL F5 a few times until you see it (in case you don't know what a favicon is, it's the cute wee Saltaire Flag to the left of my URL in your address bar), and if that doesn't work, click your mouse onto the Internet Explorer icon in your address bar, hold it down and drag it to the right a few times again until you see it. Another way to make sure it comes up every time is to put my Home Page in your list of Favourites (yeah, any excuse Docherty, I hear you cry).Either way, from now on I'll truly be flying the flag for Scotland and by far its greatest City...
Glasgow Aye Write Festival 2008
2008-01-21 10:40:00
Have a peak at this wee announcement about the upcoming 2008 Aye Write Book Festival in Glasgow , and head along if you can to this year's event as it's promising to be the biggest and best yet.FORTY-TWO years ago, Archie Hind published a novel that earned him three British literary awards and defined the character of Glasgow for a generation. The Dear Green Place told the story of a Glasgow slaughterhouse worker, a young working-class man driven to write. There was never a follow-up.After the book appeared in 1966, Mr Hind dropped off the radar of literary life after struggling with family tragedy, a lost manuscript and cancer. That was until yesterday, however, when the Aye Write! book festival in Glasgow announced his impending return...

2008-01-07 15:25:00
For some time now I've been receiving a number of emails asking me to throw up one of those wacky About Me pages you always see.I've resisted until now because for one, to be honest I ain't that interesting, and two, I've not had a spare minute to do it.So now that I've found myself with a whole five minutes at the start of the year, I've done this wee page to introduce me to the world, and once things get going again I might even add to it a little about how you could build your own site like this, even if you're as technically behind the times as me...
Experience the thrills of Xscape Glasgow
2008-01-04 15:20:00
Well how's this for encouraging signs? Only four days into 2008 and already I've completed a page on the exhilarating Xscape Glasgow , one of our best Glasgow attractions.Have a wee look at the time we went there and met Kevin Keegan, the British football legend, and learn why this place should definitely be in your plans if you want to experience a different side to the City. All I'll say is - make sure you warm up the muscles before going, and pack some energy drinks for after - I'm still feeling the effects of my time there but boy was it worth it...

State of the Bunion 2007
2007-12-11 16:16:00
According to the National Health Service, a bunion's described as a bony swelling at the base joint of the big toe. It causes the big toe to be angled inwards, towards the second toe. The skin and tissue on the bump of the bunion can become inflamed, swollen, and painful.Well you know, in a funny way, I like to think of my Top Ten Glasgow Guide as somewhat of a big swelling at the base joint of my increasingly busy life. Now don't take that the wrong way - I absolutely love my wee guide to Glasgow. During 2007 my site's become significantly inflamed and swollen with a great deal more information than it had this time last year. It now reaches across the world to thousands of visitors every month, and has almost doubled in size since 2006.It's like a bubbling bunion though, because of the pain I suffer from, the aching inability in finding the time to infuse it to bursting point every day with even more gleaming pus about life in Glasgow.Boy how my mind works when I get distracted...

Christmas in Glasgow
2007-11-20 08:22:00
I've just returned from an exhausting weekend in London with my mate Alan, but despite the lack of sleep and a pretty hefty hangover, now that I'm back in Glasgow I'm just raring to go for Christmas .I came back to see the lights switched on in George Square, and if you get the chance this year I'd certainly recommend heading there to catch the spectacular effort they've made this year.Coming up in the next few weeks will be Radiance, Glasgow's International Festival of Light, Shindig in the Square on St. Andrew's Day, and The Festive Market in St. Enoch Square, together with a great few months of celebration, shopping and over-eating.If I get a chance to catch my breath this year I'll try and get some photos of Christmas in Glasgow for you in the Photo Box, but if you have your own special photo of this amazing time in the city at this time of year, I'm sure everyone would love to see it. Simply upload it to my Photo Box and tell the story that goes along with it.I'm off f...
Glasgow Hogmanay 2007/2008 Announcement
2007-11-08 16:30:00
It's just been announced here that The View will be headlining this year's Glasgow Hogmanay extravaganza in George Square. They'll be supported by the up-and-coming (and far too talented for her age) Amy Macdonald, and the King's tribute act Suspiciously Elvis, who I've heard are really pretty close performance-wise to the main man himself. This year the 15,000 tickets will be going on sale for 10 bucks each on this Saturday, 10th November. Can that number of people really fit into George Square? Make sure if you're heading along to it you've gone easy on the Festive dinners, otherwise you might not squeeze in...It promises to be a great night, and whilst I'll be spending it elsewhere in the comfort of a 5 course dinner dance (now who's talking about excessive eating?) taking place inside, I know that if you're brave enough to confront the cold in the George Square you'll be warmed up by the atmosphere and entertainment all night, so for a tenner it's pretty much worth eve...

It's Official. Glasgow rocks like no other
2007-11-07 10:44:00
I've been saying this all along. I've just read this article in the Scotland on Sunday newspaper about the new Rough Guide published on my home town. Well it must be true then...SCOTLAND'S largest city has been named as Europe's music capital by an influential international travel guide. The new edition of The Rough Guide To The World has named Glasgow as a centre of excellent live rock music. The 2008 version of the book, which is published around the globe, claims that seeing a gig in the Dear Green Place is a 'must-do' experience. The guide describes the city's music scene as 'vociferous, rambunctious and utterly magnificent'.It states: 'Pop stars travelling from coach to bar and from plane to arena are notoriously oblivious to the city they happen to be performing in.'Some places have a genuine buzz about them and sometimes, just sometimes, when bands grandly announce how glad they are to be there they are telling the truth.'And they are always glad to be in Glasgow.
