Malagos Garden Resort
2007-07-02 10:47:00
The Mala gos Garden Resort is an ideal place for vacationing, as well as for meetings and parties. But for me, it's best for getting away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Papa Ching?s Resto
2007-05-19 05:42:00
My friend Ian brought me to this fairly new chicken place in downtown Davao, Papa Ching’s. I want to say straight away, their greaseless chicken is awesome!! It really was greaseless, and the taste was just heavenly. I don’t particularly enjoy chicken as much as, say, beef. But that experience last night made me reconsider… ...

2007-05-17 07:42:00
This is the first of a series of personality features that will be published in this blog. I’ll be featuring Davao people who have somehow made a mark in their particular fields of interest, and in Davao. And what better way to embark on this series but with the Dabawenya herself, Jojie Alcantara.

All of us have something that we’re proud of in our families. Mine is the creative blood that courses through our veins. Our clan is populated with artistic people, from painters to writers. An aunt is adept at the canvass, and has done exhibits in New York and the Hague. While she modestly disavows being ...

Honey Bear Chicken House
2007-05-06 17:02:00
Restless on a Sunday afternoon, I set off to do another walk of the city, since the afternoon weather was proving to be agreeable. At first I thought I’d check out the ongoing construction of the PTA grounds, but there wasn’t anything noteworthy (or picture-worthy) just yet. So I ended up at my favorite haunt ...

HairZone Salon & Spa
2007-05-05 06:10:00
Here’s an update to a previous post on massage places. I was looking for another place to get a massage, but couldn’t bring myself to try Philosophy Spa just yet — no budget! So a friend of mine suggested I try this new place right beside Basti’s Brew. Perfect!

I have a Japanese friend who’s married to a Filipina, and she recently gave birth to a healthy baby girl. My friend, Naoki, has been in Davao for about 6 months now, and got to love the city so much he made a Japanese-language website about it. However, recently, he had a truly disappointing and ...

Travel agents now refuse credit cards
2007-05-02 03:41:00
The Department of Trade & Industry (DTI) has reissued a warning against the tacking-on of additional charges to credit card purchases. The reason for DTI’s move is that, many stores — especially small retailers — pass on the 3-5% charge that credit card companies levy on merchants. According to our laws, this is illegal.)

Cafe Palma Gil
2007-04-24 11:31:00
A client asked me to a meeting last week, at a coffee shop I hadn’t been to yet. It was all business so I wasn’t able to sample anything other than their house blend, though. So yesterday, during a lull in my schedule, I headed for Cafe Palm a Gil to check it out in earnest.

Summer is officially here!
2007-04-08 17:43:00
After a couple of false starts since after February, I think I can safely say it’s officially summer now. Today, Easter Sunday, was a lot hotter than usual, although it surprised me to see that we had a high of only 35°C this noon. I don’t know about you guys, but I had 4 showers ...

Customer service makes all the difference
2007-03-24 02:00:00
Last Monday I went out to dinner with a couple of Manileños and a fellow Davaoeño, all kindred bloggers. Andrew suggested the place: Karlyn’s. He said the restaurant had just transferred from somewhere; now it’s located off the Ecoland Diversion Rd., just past SM City if you’re coming from the north.

The road less traveled
2007-03-13 12:23:00
Somehow I haven’t witnessed any expressions of gratitude or jubilation after the installation of new traffic lights all over the city. Some say that’s because of the traffic accidents that have happened ever since. And this, in turn, is apparently due to Davaoeños’ not being used to so many traffic lights.

Ten days to go?
2007-03-05 11:38:04
17 March is fast approaching, and it’s blog party time! Heck, I’m even more excited about it than about Araw ng Dabaw! Over the past week, the organizers and I have been busy making sure that the preparations are all running smoothly. And last night we had fun choosing the winners for the Davao Blog Awards — this isn’t a serious campaign like the Philippine Blog Awards. There are eight categories (we removed two because we couldn’t even nominate a single blog for those two: darkest blog and most politicized blog). Besides, this is just for kicks. Maybe next time we can do a full-fledged Davao or Mindanao blog awards gig. (more…)

Manado flights from Davao
2007-03-05 11:38:04
One of Davao ’s most personable travel agents is a very close friend of mine, Alex Divinagracia of Pacific Royal Wings. I used to be in the travel industry a lo-o-ong time ago, before I discovered the Internet and ultimately the then-fledgling IT industry of Davao. Anyway, Alex had just come back from Mana do, Indonesia, and he was telling me about his trip. They were hosted by Sriwijaya Air, the newest foreign airline to fly in and out of Davao. Read about that familiarization tour at Sun*Star Davao. (more…)

I was at Netfront Coffee Shop & Internet Cafe last Frida y , to talk to the owner and managers regarding the Davao Bloggers Party #1, which they’re sponsoring. I was with Kim C., who took this picture here. This new café is owned by a Korean who calls herself Janice. It’s interesting the way Koreans choose an English name for themselves. Somehow it shows an eagerness to learn the English language. But I don’t really know; I have virtually no Korean friends yet. (more…)
Massage, anyone?
2007-03-01 23:35:10
A new acquaintance gave me an idea to blog about: massage places in Davao. While we were engaged in conversation, Austin asked me about the best place in Davao to get a massage. I realized just then that there are actually quite a few now here. A colleague in the IT industry even opened a ...

I’ve been preoccupied with my Japanese clients lately I haven’t had time to check out Davao’s newly-opened restaurants and cafés. But it hasn’t stopped me from noticing them. As soon as I have the time — and extra cash — I’ll sample all of these new places and their offerings. There’s Barbecue Boss over at the ...

Coffee shop poll
2007-02-28 23:34:06
In my old blog over at davaoenos.blogspot.com, I ran a poll called "Which is the best wifi café?" Well, here are the results after 41 votes. Of course it’s not definitive, but it does give you an idea, not of the best coffee in town, but of how many people access the Internet in coffee ...

2007-02-17 05:23:03
Yesterday, after a pleasant time with my friends Bob & Feyma Martin, I wrapped up some loose ends for the day and proceeded to one of my favorite cafés to unwind. Basti’s is usually a bustling place at that time of day, and this foreigner didn’t have a table, so he asked if he could ...
