Kumon offers free trials nationwide
2009-08-28 15:26:00 Kumon Philippines will be offering for free its Math and Reading Programs in all its centers nationwide on September 17-30, 2009 to allow more Filipino children and their parents to experience the benefits of the widely-recognized Kumon method. The free trial campaign allows interested students to go through the same learning routine as regular Kumon students. Participants under the free trial campaign will attend four class days and receive daily worksheets at no cost. According to Kumon Philippines president Mr. Norihiro Nakamura, “With these free trials, Kumon aims to provide parents a clearer picture of what we can do to help maximize their children’s capabilities. More than an organization that assists children with their academics, we also hope to equip the country’s next generation of leaders with Life Skills that will allow them to contribute positively to the community.” Prior to their children attending the free trial lessons in the nearest Kumon center, parents wi... City all set for Kadayawan festival
2009-08-12 15:28:00 The City of Davao is geared up for this year’s celebration of the Kadayawan Festival . As city streets have already been adorned with colorful buntings and streamers, the 2009 Kadayawan Festival Executive Committee — headed by Mayor Rodrigo Duterte along with private sector co-chair Lorenzo Te, Jr. — has lined up an exciting calendar of events for this year’s celebration. This year’s theme, “Naghiusang Katawhan Nakigdait sa Kalibutan” (“One People in Communion with the Earth”), fittingly responds to the need of the times as Dabawenyos are reminded of their responsibilities towards Mother Earth. As Davao’s indigenous tribes have deemed the earth as the core of their existence, they have also maintained a special connection to the earth which is also the source of the life, living, culture and traditions. Thus, the earth seriously needs to be given utmost care especially this time when climactic changes have affected the lives of many. That is the main cause...
m Mag: Sec. Durano recalls days of youth
2009-08-03 03:34:00 [Media Release] From rowing a banca in a river during his teen years to bringing his own children to their first beach outing, Tourism Secretary Joseph “Ace” Felix Mari Hotchkiss Durano shares why idyllic Carrascal in Surigao del Sur is still home to him in the latest issue of m (Life and Living in Mindanao) magazine. Durano, champion of Philippine tourism, reveals the many unforgettable summers he spent in his maternal hometown as well as his plans for tourism development in Mindanao. Also in m’s sixth issue, learn about the sumptuous paella recipe of Dabawenyo chef Juan Guino-o Gaddi; the purposeful journey of Eric John Madela in helping rebuild lives in many Mindanao communities; the stylish creations of Cagay’anon designers Roel Rosal and Melvin Lachica in the recent Philippine Fashion Week; Mindanao’s bustling rubber industry and Zamboanga’s Ecozone and Freeport Authority; and, the passions of visual and performing artists Rosalie Zerrudo and Jun Cay... Davao bloggers & the American ambassador
2009-07-18 08:02:00 Bloggers & Amb. Kenney The U.S. ambassador to the Philippines, Kristie Kenney, is often in Mindanao, attending to the various projects and commitments that her government has in the Philippine South. But this time, she made a special stop while in Davao just to meet and get to know some of the bloggers here. Last year, I had a chance to meet the U.S. embassy’s press attaché and spokesperson, Rebecca Thompson, in Tagaytay for the Media Nation conference. Then a couple of weeks ago, her office contacted me to get a group of bloggers together for a meet-up with Amb. Kenney during her brief stay in Davao City. I thought it would be good to have a diverse collection of bloggers, and I came up with this seven: Jaime Haw (Apple® fanboy); Migs Hipolito (mobile technologies); Ria Jose (politics, lifestyle); Rhodilee Jean Dolor (family, business); Sarah Matalam (community work, motherhood); Lyle Santos (nursing, Internet); and Brendel Balaga (nursing studies). Mayor signs Kadayawan 2009 E.O.
2009-07-08 22:01:00 Here’s a copy of Executive Order #13, signed by City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, creating the steering committee that will oversee the organization of this year’s Kadayawan sa Dabaw festival. These are very capable and dedicated people in the steering committee, and the private sector, as always, is very supportive. Ergo, we can expect an even grander ... More About: Signs
New emergency response center
2009-07-05 23:35:00 Davao City still enjoys the distinction of being the only city in the Philippines with an emergency response center available on call 24 hours a day. Just dial 911 on any landline or mobile phone (toll free) in case of emergency. Recently, the Davao City 911 Emergency Response Center opened a new operations hub in the south — a stone’s throw away from where I live, in fact. The new center used to be a public market. And, for the life of me, I cannot fathom why the city government back in the ’80s decided to put a wet market in the middle of a residential district. Needless to say, it was a terrible idea. I’m glad that the city has found a much better use of the facility. Here are some photos I asked Chattee Lara to take of the new center located in Juna Subdivision, Matina. From their new base in Matina, these are the city’s services that will respond to emergency situations anywhere in the city: Emergency Medical Service, Urban Search & Res...
adidas gives back to the community
2009-06-21 14:36:00 A few months back, and up until 31 May 2009, adidas Philippines had a very attractive sales promo: Wanted Old Shoes. Shoppers were given a ₱500 to ₱1,000 discount on adidas purchases, provided they brought in a pair of old sports shoes for donation. adidas was able to collect thousands of pairs via 100+ participating stores nationwide. These shoes were donated recently to the Pamulaan Center for Indigenous Peoples’ Education in Mintal, Davao City. In simple rites but in a festive setting, adidas executives, led by Country Manager Nolet Puno, turned over the shoes to the students of Pamulaan. All who study at Pamulaan are children of indigenous peoples from all over the country. adidas assets graced the event, among them Purefoods cagers, Enrico Villanueva and Peter Jun Simon, who hails from Davao City. Pamulaan, the first of its kind in Asia, is established in the Mintal campus of the University of South Eastern Philippines, which is about half an hour’s drive from d... Havaianas Filipinas
2009-06-19 15:52:00 My personal celebration of Philippine Independence Day got extended with a new pair of special havaianas® flip-flops that I got today. Havaianas Philippines sent me their limited-edition Filipinas , which are “emblazoned with renditions of Filipino pride.” And they were serious about the nationalistic campaign. They sent the flip-flops along with truly Filipino icons: a miniature jeepney replica, a bag of dried mangoes, and a packet of Choc•Nuts!! Seeing the Choc•Nuts brought to mind images of my much younger days… Suddenly, comfortable tsinelas and those pseudo-chocolate goodies do make a nostalgic match. “Emblazoned with renditions of Filipino pride, the Limited Edition Havaianas Filipinas Collection features the style Havaianas Filipinas Plain, which showcases a stylized pin of Philippine colors and the style Havaianas Filipinas Print, which features the ever-enduring symbol of Filipino culture, art and lifestyle, the Jeepney, rendered in edg...
NO TO CON-ASS!!! Copyright © 2009, Oliver Robillo. This feed is for the exclusive use of ...

2008-05-31 05:49:00 Ang Dabawenyo will be flying to Manila again, and the trip will be related to blogging again. Only recently I was in the nation’s capital for iBlog4, but I didn’t stay long enough to enjoy the respite. This time I’ll be staying for a few extra nights. Davao-Samal bridge: at what cost?
2008-05-14 03:00:00 In last Monday’s issue of Edge Davao , my fellow columnist, Mr. Aurelio Pea of Trading Post, wrote about the planned bridge that will span the gulf from mainland Davao to the island of Samal. Cebu Pacific opens Davao hub
2008-05-13 01:45:00 Great news for us down South! Cebu Pacific , the leading domestic airline in the Philippines, has inaugurated its operations hub in Davao City last 8 May 2008, to further serve the island of Mindanao. Hopefully this will mean more air routes to the “missionary” destinations on the island. This is the carrier’s third hub, after ... More About: Tours , Cebu Pacific

Kadayawan 2008 logo
2008-05-09 17:59:00 Take a look at the new logo for Davao’s festival of festivals. 2008-04-30 17:59:00 Landed in Davao City a couple of hours ago.
