DejaVu Or EuRussion 2009
2008-05-29 20:25:00
As I predicted in my previous post, Russia took first place in the Eurovision this year. Ukraine (my other prediction) were next in line on the chart boards as this music contest is moving more and more to the East. Yet again, block voting politics is the most effective way of winning this competition. Also predictably, ...SHARETHIS.addEntry({ title: "DejaVu Or EuRussion 2009", url: "http://todercan.com/?p=87" });

Eurovision 2008
2008-05-23 01:24:00
About a year ago, I have written about the Eurovision music contest that takes place annually in Europe. This year, the competition was organized in the country that won last year: Serbia. There have been some changes to the rules of participation this year that require two semifinals instead of one. Unfortunately, Moldova (represented this year ...SHARETHIS.addEntry({ title: "2008 .html">Eurovision 2008 ", url: "http://todercan.com/?p=84" });

Legislative Internship 2008
2008-04-04 03:29:00
As a student majoring in Political Science at the University of Alaska Southeast, I had the opportunity (and the requirement for graduation) to apply for the Legislative Internship Program that is offered each year in Juneau, Alaska. After being accepted into the program (with a significant amount of stress involved on my part) in September ...

Notes on Hawaii (1)
2008-01-08 22:39:00
After having celebrated New Year?s Eve in New York last year, with confetti and atmosphere, this New Year?s celebration has caught me on a remote island in the Pacific. So instead of the giant skyscrapers and the Statue of Liberty, I was surrounded by the palm trees and exotic beaches of Hawaii . I got off the ...

Finally I have found some time to sit down and update my blog. My flights to Mold ova went just fine, with some minor inconveniences that haven?t affected me that much. 2007-06-21 23:45:00
 La doar 9 zile pana la decolarea acasa, ma simt deja putin dezamagit. Am impresia ca cele doua luni care le voi petrece in apropierea celor dragi vor trece prea repede ca sa reusesc macar sa-i vad.  In acelasi timp, simt deja nelinistea si fiorii dinnainte de plecare. Ma gandesc la pregatirea bagajelor si sunt sigur ...

Finals Are Over!
2007-05-11 06:50:00
Finally done with classes, I have decided to write a couple of words in here about my latest endeavors. Finals week has definitely drained a lot of my capabilities of keeping up with the multitasking, and capabilities to concentrate on other things, and I am slowly “recovering” from it. It is a great relief to know that it is finally over, and that I can focus my attention on more things. I am working full time at Media Services on-campus until late June. I am setting off for a trip home on the 1st of July for about two months or so. It is a shame that I will not experience the euphoria that comes (from what I have heard) with the 4th of July again, but I am still hoping to catch the chance of feeling the American spirit and their love for details one of these years. The Independence Day is considered (judging by the preparations for this feast) more important than other holidays that, at least in Moldova are paid more attention to. People set records on hamburger meat and hot-d...

Happy Easter

I wrote an entry a couple of days ago with advice on how to drive during a blizzard. I omitted to say one crucial thing though. Don’t underestimate ice. Unfortunately, I made that mistake earlier this week (3/12/2007), while driving to the University. The road was more slippery than usual, and I felt that as soon ...

March 8th, International Women?s Day
2007-03-09 01:20:06
On March eight, people all over Europe (and especially Eastern Europe) celebrateInter national Women ’s Day. It started as a women’s rights movement, and in some places, the holidaykeptits political roots. However, it has become part of many cultures, and lost its initial significance. Instead, it became a day when the men show their affection and love for women. Something like the Western St. Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day mixed together. It is a beautiful holiday, and I would like to wish a happy Women’s Day to all of you ladies who make the world go round and the life go on. Thank you. *** As vrea sa felicit toate doamnele si domnisoarele pe care le cunosc cu ocazia Zilei Internationale a Femeii. Sa ne traiti, caci voi faceti viata interesanta, colora si frumoasa. Felicitari! Share This

Waiting for Spring
2007-03-06 01:18:01
In a few countries in Central-Eastern part of Europe, spring has started. March 1st is considered to be the beginning of spring. In Moldova, everyone celebrates it with a holiday called Martisor. ?Martisor? (pronounced martsishor) comes grammatically from the word March, and is a direct diminutive of it, meaning something like ?young March.? It is an interesting tradition, in which people exchange a white-and-red totem also called ?martisor.? It is the symbol of spring and fertility, and that is why, after about a week of wearing it on the left side of their chest, people hang it on a plant, or tree. You should make a wish when you do it, which will supposedly come true if the tree is fertile that year. Not really… but it?s still a beautiful tradition. The ?beginning of spring? in America however has not brought much cheering or joy. The tragedy in Alabama has brought sadness and more skepticism against the current administration regarding helping the region, especially after ...

From Hell

From my experience of being an exchange student for a while, and currently an international student in college, I can say that one of the key factors that influences one?s stay is the host family. I was indeed lucky to get into a host family that was ? and is ? an open-minded family with great values and achievements in life. I had the opportunity to learn many things, from replacing a car tire to cooking hamburgers, from the moderately conservative, but pleasant people that treated me (and still do) like their own child. A lot of other exchange students haven?t had that luck however. From the group of students that left Moldova, for example, a friend of mine (who will remain unnamed) ended-up in a family that was at least unreasonable in relationship to my friend. When he opened the refrigerator he could see certain foods that had sticky notes with a message like ?DO NOT TOUCH? on top of them. Another one had to walk the dog every two hours starting at 6:00 am. (more…) Share ...

Alaska vs. Arkansas (II)
2007-02-24 13:12:01
I told my friends about my real destination (AK) only later that week. Some of them laughed; a lot of them didn’t quite know how to react. Hesitant, they tried to consolate me with things like: “I am sure it’s not that bad.” I knew that they didn’t really mean it. One of the wittier of my friends compared me and my program to the USSR and their “excursions” to Soviet Siberia for those who did not obey the “Big Brother.” On the other hand, my parents (especially my mother, who cried of happiness when she found out I was a finalist), were not really worried. My father thought it would actually be better for me and my “individual development”. Yes, I will give him credit for that. It took some time to actually get used to the idea that Alaska was to be my home for one full year, but once I could do that, it wasn’t that bad anymore. I became more and more curious and excited about what this place had to offer. Now I...

My Trip to New York City (English)
2007-02-21 01:09:04
I am finally back in Alaska. What a trip! I feel like I just woke up from a dream in which I have seen extraordinary things, and just the pictures will prove that I hadn’t been dreaming. I can say that one of my greatest dreams came true, and Santa (my host dad and Michael Wilford) had been very generous to me, for which I am very grateful. Traveling was exhausting at times, but in the long run, I think it was totally worth it. The two days that we had spent on our way to New York and back were tuff, but they had also given me an unforgettable experience. We started from Murphy, North Carolina (where Cheree, a friend of Michael’s lives). North Carolina is the state that reminds me most about home. The deciduous trees and the hills are very similar to the ones in Moldova, and it felt like I was there. We arrived in Maryland ten hours later, and we spent the night at Michael’s grandparents. Next morning, we were on our way to the capital city. Washington DC is a beau...

My Trip to New York City (Romanian)
2007-02-21 01:09:04
(more…)

Alaska vs. Arkansas

After I had found out that I was a finalist in the Flex Exchange Program for my first visit to the United States, my first question was a natural one (in my opinion at least). I wanted to know what state I was going to. The response was that there was no information on that subject quite yet. A bit disappointed and very anxious, I started dreaming about the place that I would enjoy going to most. California (which I eventually went to), Massachusetts and Florida were on the top of my list. Of course, I didn?t know much about the different kinds of people who lived in those parts of the United States, but I was basing my top choices on the things that might have interested me at the time. California was this fairy-tale land that I always imagined to be a very exotic place, where it is always summer and celebrities are born and the show-biz flourishes. Florida was very similar in that respect, however something else attracted me to it. In my mind, this state was perfect because it had...
