Bodrum Castle, Bodrum
2008-05-27 20:36:00 Bodrum Castle , located in southwest Turkey in the city of Bodrum, was built by the Knights Hospitaller starting in 1402 as the Castle of St. Peter or Petronium. Confronted with the invasion of Seljuk Turks, the Knights Hospitaller, with their headquarters on the island of Rhodes, needed another stronghold on the mainland. Grand Master Philibert de Naillac (1396-1421) found a suitable site across the island of Kos, where there was already a castle of the Order. This location had been already the site of a fortification in Doric times (1110 BC) and of a small Seljuk castle in the 11th century. The same promontory was also the probable site of the palace of Mausolos, the famous king of Caria. Turkey is interesting country for vacations and trips. Jeanneken Pis, Brussels
More articles from this author:2008-05-27 07:32:00 Jeanneke Pis is a modern fountain and statue in Brussels , which forms a counterpoint in gender terms to the city’s trademark Manneken Pis, as it does aurally and geographically, being about the same distance away on the other side of the Grand Place / Grote Markt. It was made by Denis-Adrien Debouvrie in 1985 and erected in 1987 and endowed with its own instant legend, the better to amuse strollers. This half-metre-high statue of blue-grey limestone depicts a little girl with her hair in bunches, squatting and urinating, apparently very contentedly. It is located on the east side of the Faith Alley, a narrow dead-end street some 30 metres long leading northwards off the restaurant-packed Rue des Bouchers / Beenhouwersstraat. It is unsurprisingly much less well known than its male counterpart, being a new addition instead of a centuries-old symbol of the city. Not famous like other statue, but Brussels has many toruist attractions. GPS travel coordinates: 50° 50′ 55″ N, 4Â... 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 |
