Light Dinner at the Grand Lux Cafe Beverly Center on La Cienega in Los Ange
2008-01-25 19:02:00 SeeTheGlobe.com Travel Article :: After seeing a movie at the chilly Beverly Center Cinemas we needed a place to warm up and grab a bite to eat. Grand Lux Cafe is in the same building as the Beverly Center and on this rare rainy and cold Southern California evening it proved the deciding factor. We just did not want to drive around in the rain looking for another place. We visited this restaurant years ago and wanted to try it again. We parked at the large parking structure at the mall. At a dollar per hour it was not an over the top expensive place to leave our car. Rate and Review : Light Dinner at the Grand Lux Cafe Beverly Center on La Cienega in Los Angeles
Hello From Ontario - A Driving Tour Along the Niagara Escarpment
2008-01-24 18:42:00 SeeTheGlobe.com Travel Article :: Although I love the city the summer always makes me itch to get out into the country. So I called up my friend Karel with whom I had helped organize a conference many years ago and asked him if he would mind getting together in his neck of the woods near Burlington for a country driving tour of the Niagara Escarpment. Since we had not seen each other for a couple of years it was a great opportunity to catch up and enjoy a beautiful drive at the same time.Rate and Review : Hello From Ontario - A Driving Tour Along the Niagara Escarpment

Dinner at Sardi's Restaurant on 44th Street, New York Theater District
2008-01-21 20:07:00 SeeTheGlobe.com Travel Article :: We made reservations for Sardi's weeks prior to our New York City visit. The visit was to be a part of our evening at the theater. Sardi's is a popular restaurant destination in the theater district. It has been serving writers, actors, stage hands and anyone else involved with the performing arts for eighty two years (says their site). During that time it has become one of the essential pre-theater or post-theater dining establishments. On the evening of our visit we almost showed up late. It was a rainy New York night and there were no cabs to be found anywhere. At the last moment we found one and soon after stopped at their location on 44th Street. Fish and Chips at Ye Olde Kings Head British Pub in Santa Monica, Californi
2008-01-20 08:03:00 SeeTheGlobe.com Travel Article :: After a long day of chasing discs at a beach ultimate tournament, our friends were eager to get some food into their systems. We were mere observers during the physical activities but built up an appetite nevertheless. Ye Olde Kings Head on Santa Monica Blvd. was conveniently located close to the pedestrian bridge that connects the beach and the Santa Monica urban center. That and a promise of good food and drinks made it a clear winner when deciding when to eat. As the sun set everyone made their way uphill the restaurant. Once at the entrance we learned that the entire place was booked for the night. It was Saturday evening after all.Rate and Review : Fish and Chips at Ye Olde Kings Head British Pub in Santa Monica, California

Whale Watching from Point Vicente in Palos Verdes Peninsula, California
2008-01-16 18:52:00 SeeTheGlobe.com Travel Article :: Every year, between the months of December and May, volunteers from the Los Angeles branch of The American Cetacean Society gather daily at the Point Vicente Interpretive Center on the Palos Verdes Peninsula to participate in a census of whales passing through the Catalina Channel. Since this is one of our favorite walking trails in all of LA we often stop by, say hello to the participants, ask them questions and analyze the data that is presented. Not that we know how many whales appeared or should have appeared be but it is always interesting to note that just a few miles off the coast of one of world's largest metropolis areas, whales swim by, almost unnoticed, on their yearly migration. Discover Medieval Vilnius Old Town, A Postcard Perfect City
2008-01-15 14:00:00 SeeTheGlobe.com Travel Article :: Travelling and discovering new places has always been my passion. I find travelling truly rewarding - you are always exposed to new sites and exciting adventures, meeting new people and learn something about their culture first hand. By the year of 2003 I have covered most of the western European countries but the Eastern part was left undiscovered. I learned about Lithuania for the first time from my friend who has just arrived back from his vacation in Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania. He was full of pleasant impressions and affectionately described it as "a chocolate box city of three-story baroque buildings". At that time I didn't know anything about the country, except that Lithuania is one of the Baltic States, which heroically gained its independence back from the former Soviet block in 1991.Rate and Review : Discover Medieval Vilnius Old Town A Postcard Perfect City
Weekday Brunch at Rue 57 Restaurant, Midtown West, Manhattan, New York City
2008-01-15 04:22:00 SeeTheGlobe.com Travel Article :: It is not our custom to eat brunch on weekdays. We were on vacation in this instance. After a late start to the day and a missed breakfast we decided to grab a bite to eat on our way to the Museum of Modern Arts. A restaurant that we were planning to visit was closed at this hour (11am). We noticed Rue 57 during our walk. It had a pleasant interior, the menu had plenty of options and they were serving brunch. It was a chilly and windy day and the warmth of the restaurant brought a sigh of relief from all. Our minds were made up. Saturday Evening Dinner at Ric's Restaurant Bar and Grill in Camarillo
2008-01-13 20:19:00 SeeTheGlobe.com Travel Article :: Camarillo Outlets are probably our favorite shopping area. We visit them approximately once a year and try to stock up with bargains for the coming period. A meal in Camarillo always ensues. This time we went to Ric's Restaurant . I read through several Chowhound.com discussions and someone recommended Ric's as a solid restaurant. We noted the address and decided to visit it after our buying spree. We did not have reservations. Just after five o'clock, on the day of our visit, we drove into the restaurant's parking lot. Ric's is located in a large mall at the corner of Las Posas Blvd and Ameill Road and parking is plentiful. The outside of the establishment has the same look as the mall. It is in the part where most of the other eateries are also located.Rate and Review : Saturday Evening Dinner at Ric's Restaurant Bar and Grill in Camarillo, California
Seven Day Stay at the W Hotel Union Square, Manhattan, New York City
2008-01-12 00:51:00 SeeTheGlobe.com Travel Article :: We spent a pleasant week in New York just before the holidays in December. It was a great time to explore the city, see new plays, view latest exhibitions, check out the cool new eateries and visit family members. During the planning stage, we were looking for a hotel near Union Square. The W Hotel was always on our mind, but we found it to be pricey in the past. The difference this year was that all hotel prices in New York seemed to have increased drastically. Staying at much more modest lodgings was going to cost us several hundred dollars per night. We might as well go all out then and pick a nicer place. Thanks to a sweet special by Starwood Hotels (stay four nights, get two free) we were able to bring our costs down and stay at the W Hotel. This was our first visit to this hotel brand and we were excited.Rate and Review : Seven Day Stay at the W Hotel Union Square, Manhattan, New York City

2008-01-10 23:51:00 SeeTheGlobe.com Travel Article :: Large signs near the intersection of Sepulveda and Rosecrans Boulevards introduced the opening of the La Sirena Grill in El Segundo. We drove there for lunch today. The restaurant is located in the Edge mini mall, which is at the East border of the gargantuan new Plaza mall in El Segundo. They tried to make this part of the shopping experience more modern. There are a lot of windows everywhere, metal, straight lines dominate and some exposed brick. Not bad at all visually. At the Eastern most point is La Sirena. Not all the shops have opened yet so parking was not a problem. We had some business in this part of town and decided that it makes sense to get an early start and beat the morning rush hour. We would have breakfast near our planned destination at our own pace, enjoying the start of a new day. Needless to say that parking was available everywhere at this hour. The doors of the restaurant were open so we peeked inside. The staff were setting up the tables and getting ready for the day. They offered us coffee and asked us to wait a few more minutes while they set up. We sat in the lounge area and relaxed until it was time to move to the dining area and have some breakfast.Rate and Review : Early Breakfast at Toast Bakery Cafe on Third Street in Los Angeles , CA
Evening at the Comedy and Magic Club in Hermosa Beach, CA
2008-01-07 07:33:00 SeeTheGlobe.com Travel Article :: We have been wanting to see Jay Leno perform at the Comedy and Magic Club in Hermosa Beach for a while now. He has his regular gig on Sunday evenings here. Somehow we always forget to book in advance. His shows do sell out regularly and you have to plan in advance. Tonight was different though. A rainy weekend seemed to have kept many Southern Californians indoors in their warm and dry homes. We called the club just after four in the afternoon and they had a few tickets available. A credit card was all that was needed to ensure our attendance. The show was to start at seven in the evening but they opened the doors around five.Rate and Review : Evening at the Comedy and Magic Club in Hermosa Beach, CA
Sunday Family Brunch at Les Halles Restaurant in Midtown Manhattan, NYC
2008-01-06 07:30:00 SeeTheGlobe.com Travel Article :: Les Halles was recommended to us as a good location for a family brunch in New York City. Its location was convenient, enabling everyone in the party to walk to it from their homes or hotels. The weather forecast promised rain and snow. It seemed like many New Yorkers decided to stay in bed and sleep through it. The streets were half deserted. An interesting sight. It did not turn out that bad after all. Just a drizzle here and there. The restaurant was almost empty when we arrived. Not bad, we thought. The entire place just to ourselves. We were seated at a nice round corner table with a view of the entire establishment.Rate and Review : Sunday Family Brunch at Les Halles Restaurant in Midtown Manhattan, NYC
Lunch at Cosette French Bistro in Midtown Manhattan, New York City
2008-01-04 20:49:00 SeeTheGlobe.com Travel Article :: Four of us had to synchronize a lunch time meeting in Midtown Manhattan in late December. Quick review of restaurant options netted several possibilities. Cosette won as a casual, seemingly solid and inexpensive French Bistro. We made reservations and headed out on foot on this cold and brisk day. The city was not very busy. Usual lunch time crowds seemed to have subsided as Christmas was nearing. From Park Avenue we made our way East onto 33rd Street. From there it was not hard to locate Cosette with a maroon entrance and a sign announcing it. Easy Hike Through the Malibu Creek State Park in Malibu, CA
2008-01-02 18:57:00 SeeTheGlobe.com Travel Article :: Malibu Creek State Park is one of my favorite outdoor areas in Los Angeles. From the initial visit more than ten years ago to the most recent visit yesterday, I have visited it on numerous occasions, often bringing family and friends to learn about this wonderful park. We started off this new year with a relaxing walk here. Southern California weather completely cooperated with us. It was January 1st, and the temperature was around seventy degrees Fahrenheit, making it a perfect day for outdoor activities. To get to the park we drove down Pacific Coast Highway, took Las Virgenes Road North and after approximately five miles saw the signs directing us to the entrance. The road from PCH to the park goes through a beautiful canyon. There are several turnoffs where you can stop and admire the natural beauty of the Malibu Canyon. Be careful though as it is a two lane curvy road.Rate and Review : Easy Hike Through the Malibu Creek State Park in Malibu, CA
Breakfast at the Friend of a Farmer Restaurant near Union Square in NYC
2007-12-31 20:28:00 SeeTheGlobe.com Travel Article :: Concierge at the W Hotel recommended that we try Friend of a Farmer Restaurant for breakfast during our stay in New York City. It was just around the corner from the hotel. The promise of a good breakfast always gets me even more hungry than I already am. The restaurant is located on the East side of Irving Place between 18th and 19th streets. Not hard to find at all. Due to the time difference between West and East coasts we were eating breakfast closer to noon. On this day we got in just before 11am when the menu changed. The hostess was nice enough to ensure that we could order from the breakfast menu even though they seemed strict regarding this rule.Rate and Review : Breakfast at the Friend of a Farmer Restaurant near Union Square in NYC

This time around we carefully prepared (read "called in advance") and ensured that it was open for visitors. Originally, it was the private library of financier Pierpont Morgan. His son J. P. Lunch at Bistro Du Soleil French Restaurant in Playa Del Rey, California
2007-12-29 15:00:00 SeeTheGlobe.com Travel Article :: Bistro Du Soleil is one of our standard lunch spots. We visit this French bistro every few months and always come out satisfied. As you might suspect from our return visits we do like the food here. Its location is a bit unusual, at the sharp corner of Vista Del Mar Lane and the much larger Vista Del Mar Street. Busy Vista Del Mar runs just underneath the dining room but the sound insulation is solid and the inside of the restaurant is not loud at all. Parking is available right above the restaurant. There are only a few spots here. You might have to park on the street. If you do not mind walking a few hundred yards, you are guaranteed a parking spot at the Del Rey Lagoon Park near Convoy and Esplanade.Rate and Review : Lunch at Bistro Du Soleil French Restaurant in Playa Del Rey, California

2007-12-28 20:22:00 SeeTheGlobe.com Travel Article :: One of our signature stops while visiting New York is the The Museum of Modern Art. It never ceases to amaze us with its exhibitions, architecture and the overall experience. Museum touring can be tiring as well. After a few hours of complete focus on art we tend to get quite tired, our feet start to ache and we seek out a resting place. Terrace 5 proved to provide just that during our December visit. The holiday crowds had not yet started to overwhelm this museum and the waiting line to dine at this cafe was not long at all. On previous visits we were discouraged by, what seemed like, hundreds of anxious patrons patiently waiting in line to experience Terrace 5. Just ten minutes after we approached the cafe, we were escorted to a nice window table.Rate and Review : Lunch at Terrace 5 (The Carroll and Milton Petrie Cafe ) at the MOMA in New York City

Prior to this activity, we needed to grab a bite to eat. Breakfast is our favorite meal of the day. Our hotel concierge put together a list of worthwhile breakfast destinations on the Upper East Side. A quick taxi ride brought us initially to Cafe Sabarsky at the Neue Gallerie. They stopped serving breakfast at 11am and we were really in the mood for some eggs and pancakes. A few blocks away was Sarabeth's so we mosied down to its location on Madison and 92nd. The outside of the restaurant was really cute. Locals and visitors stroll up and down Santa Cruz Avenue, shop, have coffee, meet their neighbors and have jolly ole time. We decided to do just that with our friends who live not too far from this main thoroughfare. Christmas season was in full swing and festive decorations were blanketing the town. It was slightly chilly, but pleasant for walking around. Our friends were taking us to one of their favorite eateries, Pastaria & Market Italian Restaurant on Main Street. Reservations for this Friday evening were made in advance. This is recommended since the dining area is not very large and was completely full all night.Rate and Review : Dinner at The Pastaria & Market Italian Restaurant in Los Gatos, California

Around 9:30 we got going and Vanessa's sister dropped us off, right in front of the Angel de la Independencia, a monument erected in 1910 to commemorate independence from Spain, on the Paseo de la Reforma. The Paseo de la Reforma is an almost 4 km long tree-lined boulevard, connecting the center of the city with the Bosque de Chapultepec. Various monuments adorn its glorietas, or traffic circles, and we had already seen one of the monuments, the Caballito, yesterday. Right next to the Angel de la Independencia, an officer of the tourist police stopped us and asked us where we were going and if he could be of help. Sunday Brunch at Venus Restaurant in Berkeley, California
2007-12-12 07:32:00 SeeTheGlobe.com Travel Article :: Shattuck Avenue was quite calm this last Sunday morning. You could spot people here and there as they went about their early day activities. We walked around the neighborhood waiting for our friends to arrive by BART from San Francisco. Parking is free on Sundays at meters in the area and it was plentiful as well near the Durant Avenue intersection where the eatery is located. We made sure to put our name on the waiting list at Venus Restaurant because we did not have reservations and it was very crowded inside. After our friends arrived we had to wait another fifteen minutes . Another party failed to show up on time making our seating that much quicker.Rate and Review : Sunday Brunch at Venus Restaurant in Berkeley , California
