Japan Fingerprinting Foreigners
2007-11-29 02:49:00
In the “Everybody Else is Doing It” column to complement South Korea’s new E-2 visa requirements, Asian Pop with YeinJee reports that Japan now requires all foreigners age 16 and up to get fingerprinted, even travelers.   This is for terrorism reasons.

Naver Bans User for 100 Years
2007-11-29 02:42:00
This is from Web 2.0 Asia.  Korean mega-portal Naver , you know, the site with more blinking annoying ads than a Korean street at night, has banned a user for 100 years for, ironically, posting commercial information in their Q&A section. More here (it’s near the bottom).

The Politics of Soup
2007-11-29 02:17:00
Mongdori has posted a campaign ad for presidential front runner Lee Myung-bak, which basically is a bunch of shots of him eating soup. I guess his advisers saw how much it hurt John Kerry when he ordered a Philly cheesesteak with swiss cheese instead of the traditional Cheez Whiz.

AP Does Metropolitician

Michael Hurt (Scribblings of the Metropolitician, Feetman Seoul, Seoul Glow, and whatever project he’s working on) was featured in an article and a video by the Associated Press talking about race in Korea and Korean attitudes towards foreigners.  I particularly liked the responses to Michael’s opinions by the New York bureau chief of The ...

OMG, Heels Christ!
2007-11-26 03:10:00
So this is what it was all about. Now, I’ve been exposed to a bit of performance art at art shows in America (they give out free wine). I’m starting to learn how to “get it.” This is clever–and ballsy. This is in the prime preacher zone in Myeong-dong, next to Migliore. Check ...

Immigration: Politics of Encounter
2007-11-26 02:56:00
No matter where you sit on the political spectrum, Bill Moyers Journal is always enlightening.  I have a subscription to it on my iTunes. Last week he did a segment with Professor Manuel Vásquez about immigration in America.  He talks about how new immigrants affect communities, the patterns of reaction, and how immigrants feel dual ...

Korea?s Corruption Culture
2007-11-24 03:42:00
Korean blogger Seoul Searcher has a good post on how deeply entrenched corruption is to Korean society and how it kills any chance of Korea becoming any kind of “international hub.”

But Did He Find the Bathroom?
2007-11-23 02:47:00
Thankfully, translated through Korea Beat, the missing four-year-old in Busan has been found… At a Buddhist temple way up in the mountains. So far, police aren’t saying he was abducted, as originally thought.  He just got lost for two days looking for the bathroom at his pre-school.

Metropolitician Was Arrested
2007-11-21 04:33:00
Michael Hurt (Scribblings of the Metropolitician, Feetman Seoul) was doing a photo shoot with MissKoco and a Korean model when a drunken ajossi started harassing them. He then followed them into a coffee shop and continued to harass them. Michael called the police. They arrested both of them and charged Michael with assault. Why assault? The drunk claimed that Michael kicked him, even though witnesses were watching the entire time. Oh, and the drunk guy also said MissKoco was a man. I know MissKoco. You gotta be really drunk to mistake her for a man. Full details are on his site with audio and a few pictures to back up his story.

Freakin’ Snow
2007-11-20 05:55:00
Everyone’s talking about last night’s snow. Marmot’s talking about it. Mongdori’s talking about it. I’m talking about it. Feetman took pictures. My question is this: Does snow usually come with violent lightning? I should have taken video last night.  Nonetheless, here’s some video I took from my apartment balcony during last year’s first snow. [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c BK3A4pi5-4]

News Flash: Korean Concert Goers are Rude
2007-11-19 06:01:00
According to the Chosun Ilbo, Korean concert attendees lack etiquette.  They don’t turn off their phones during a classical concert.  They clap between movements.  They touch art exhibits and use flash photography (actually, I’ve seen Japanese tourists do that to the Mona Lisa). I haven’t been to any concerts here because the ticket prices are astronomically perverse. Wait, hold on… “About 40 percent of classical and opera audiences used free tickets last year.” Free tickets? Where can I score some of this swag?

2007-11-19 04:52:00
Just in time for autumn, this is one of my favorite videos. We shot this in early November 2004 at Seoraksan (the video’s title says, “Saraksan”). It’s a relaxing moody piece. Stick around for the end for my first taste of beondaeggi (silkworm maggots) and crickets. revver(1430) Shot: 2004-11-06 Edited: 2004-12-09 ZK Origin al s are videos shot and edited exclusively for ZenKimchi.

The Pillars of the Earth
2007-11-15 15:24:00
Ken Follett’s The Pillars of the Earth is Oprah’s next book club rave. This is still my favorite book of all time. It’s 973 pages, but I’ve read it five times. I’m much overdue for another re-read. I first read it in 1991 (it was published in 1989). My English teacher had it on a list of suggested Spring Break reading. I read it during Spring Break with time to spare. Until that time, I had not been much of a reader. I felt so accomplished from the book and so sad to say goodbye to the characters that it started me on the course of reading books on my own. Since then I have been lending my copies out, creating more fans of the realm in the novel. Both copies are now long gone. Basically, it’s a story that spans around 100 years in 12th century England. The main theme is the building of a cathedral and the town around it–and its beginnings as a Romanesque stout building to an airy Gothic masterpiece. Follett himself says it’s ...

The Quietest Day in Korea
2007-11-15 08:25:00
Today is university entrance exam day.  The whole country goes quiet so the students can concentrate on their tests.  I don’t have to take the test, but I’m feeling the anxiety for them. My Canon Doesn’t Match My Skirt
2007-11-15 02:28:00
According to Feetman Seoul, one of the new street fashion accessories is a camera. Hmm… maybe now I can convince Eun Jeong to let me buy something a little more serious than my little Chinese point-and-shoot. “But 자기야… it’s to complete the new shoes you just bought.”
