Schleswig, Germany - Tierpark
2009-08-13 01:00:00
We took our nephew and niece to an animal park today. I took these pics with a borrowed 70mm lens. I couldn't believe how much better the photos looked and with the image stabilization I hardly had any blury pics.

Berlin, Germany - Berlinistan
2009-08-11 01:00:00
The last time I was here in Berlin I had to work the whole two days and got to see very little. Despite living in Germany for 18 months and coming back to this country countless times, I've never had a chance to explore the capital. I knew that Berlin had it's fair share of weirdoes, naked men in parks and failed existences with short black hair wondering about but that aside, this city is oozing with intriguing modern political history. CNN could have solely focused on this city and captured most major events of the past century. We had a lovely hotel with a Balcony as big as the main room, tons of sunlight shining through the curtains in the morning and a coffee machine with free wifi to boot. Berlin didn't feel very German nor like any other place I've been to in this country. Capital cities have a habit of being like that. The architecture is second to none and the size, scale and cost of building these structures is unlikely to be repeated anywhere else in Europe in ...
Budapest, Hungary - Formula 1 Grand Prix
2009-07-26 01:00:00
I took a photo of Jenson Button driving in his Formula 1 car today. The shot took my camera 1/125th of a second to make. In that single moment, 4 of the 10 teams racing spent $32 each competing in Formula 1 . Over the next lap, which was about 84 seconds long, they would each spend $336,134, or thereabouts, racing in a series they know they cannot win this season. Though hearing the cars start up and fly around the circuit helps make up for it. I flew out to Hungary on Saturday morning to watch the Formula 1 race. I took a cheap Hungarian (or Polish, I'm not sure) Airline called Wizz Air (yes, like peeing) because it was cheap and most convenient for me. I was surprised not to see any other visible Formula 1 fans on the flight but instead, Lewis Hamilton's Dad! I was so shocked I didn't know what to do but I knew I had to do something. I grabbed the receipt for my race day ticket and went over to his seat and introduced myself. He kindly signed it and asked if I was goin...

Budapest, Hungary - Beautiful Budapest
2009-07-25 01:00:00
I flew out to Budapest on Saturday morning to go to the Formula 1 Grand Prix and see the city. Budapest reminds me of Paris, Riga and a little bit of Nice in the south of France. A lot of Taxis did flat rate and most businesses were straight with their pricing so the fear of scams I had before going out there quickly faded. I walked about 16KM on Saturday and about another 16KM Monday exploring the city. I took 726 photos during my time there. Here are some of my favourites.

The Cotswolds, UK - Megan and Chris' Wedding
2009-07-19 01:00:00
Our friends of the past five and a half years, Megan and Chris , got Married yesterday. The wedding was out in the Cotswolds, about two and half hours west of London. Everything about the wedding was lovely and executing with effortless perfection. Meg and Chris look so happy together and I've seen few other couples with such great compatibility as these two. It was good to see some old faces at the wedding and we enjoyed all the hours of banter and laughter. It was a shame it was raining when we left this morning because I could print calendars for the next 20 years with photos from this part of England. I have to admit, it was a bit of a culture shock going back into the country side. Southern England is basically made up of Southern England and London, London being something of a completely different world from everything else that surrounds it. The friendly people, the pubs where everyone knows one another, everyone's fascination with any new faces that turn up and the ...

Tallinn, Estonia - Midsummer's in the Baltics
2009-06-27 01:00:00
We spent the last 10 days abroad. We were meant to just spend 4 days in Estonia but Anja's Aunt passed away. We fly last minute to Germany and stayed there for 5 days. Then, we flew to Riga and stayed at my cousin's place. Now, there is a bit of a pattern with alcohol, Latvia and myself. Almost every single time I go to Lativa, on the first night I like to try out all the interesting and unique drinks they have. The morning after I always feel like I'd been run over by a tank. This time we had a few beers, chatted for a bit and then the girls went to bed and Janis and I stayed up until 5am drinking some home-made beer he had prepared. The water of the beer tasted really cold and fresh and the rest of the drink was light and a bit fruity. We damn near emptied the keg and by 5am we were shouting about various potential European conflicts we foresee happening in the near future and how they could play out. What I didn't realise is that Anja had been in bed for hours and c...

London, UK - I'm dropping Russian classes
2009-06-11 01:00:00
Ma olen natukene vene keelt õppinud, siin see on: ????????????. ???? ????? ?????. ? ?? ??????????. ??? ??? ??????. ??? ???????? ????????? ?????? ???????????? ? ??????????! And for the rest of you: From this week, I will stop going to Russian language class. I am not happy with the way the teacher teaches me. Usually she photocopies a page of a book, removes some words and then plays a dialogue of the text and we try and listen for the words and write them down. I have managed to learn a bit of Russian, here it is: Hello. My name is Borat. I am from Kazakstan. This is my sister. She is the fourth best prostitute in all of Kazakstan!

Siena, Italy - A week in Tuscany
2009-05-10 01:00:00
We had a 14 hour journey from Tallinn via Copenhagen down to Tuscany in Italy on Monday. The town we eventually stayed in near (and I use this phrase loosely) Siena was really quiet on Monday night and not a lot of shops looked open or inviting. I noticed that everything was a bit expensive as well and I was starting to think that if we wanted a holiday in a small city where no one wanted to speak in English and everything was really pricey then we could have gone to Monaco instead. Things turned around during the week and despite the town being a good 2 to 3 hour drive away from anything of interest, we managed a day out in Pisa and a lovely day at the beach in Principina a Mare. We also managed a 50% success rate in finding restaurants where people could speak anything other than Italian. Anja and I can speak in 7 different languages between us so hats off to the Italians for not being remotely trained in any of these during all their years of schooling. Most restaurants loo...

Maranello, Italy - Ferrari drive around Maranello
2009-05-10 01:00:00
Anja and I changed our plans for the last few days of our trip. We left Tuscany early and head up to Maranello. Maranello is situated in a corridor of towns hosting various sports car manufacturers. This is the home region of Lamborghini, Bugatti and one special firm we paid a visit to: Ferrari . The hotel we checked in to was dirt cheap, really big and next to a warehousing complex for truckers. The hotel interior was covered in pictures and paintings of various sports cars and most of the clients were middle-aged men who were dragging their wives from car factory to car factory to race course in this part of Italy . Despite the industrial-sounding nature of the area, there are some lovely villages, wineries and we found an amazing restaurant were the staff spoke German. After a week of us needing to speak Italian because the various waiters and waitresses couldn't speak anything else, this was like finding water in the dessert. We drove around the Ferrari factory, went to t...
