Where to eat in Redding, CA
2007-09-13 00:54:00
Finky the Kid here...Let's say you find yourself up in northern California and your stomach is growling something fierce - where do you go to grab a bite? How about the Black Bear Diner. Now, I learned two things during my 23.5 hours in Redding:1. If it's summer and it's only 99 degrees at 2pm, it's considered "not so hot" (out-of-towners like me don't realize that the temps soar here during the "summer", but it's no desert.)2. The Black Bear Diner will easily satisfy the appetite of even the largest mammal. The menu is full of "comfort food" favorites: for breakfast there's omelettes & scambles, pancakes and waffles, steak and eggs, and 3 kinds of eggs benedict. For lunch and dinner the selections range from burgers (including Gardenburgers), hot sandwiches, meatloaf, pot roast, to salads, steaks, ribs, fish, chicken. I had strawberry french toast for breakfast, which consisted of three oversized slices of hot french toast, slathered with fresh-cut berries (none of that ice cr...
Universal Studios Hollywood
2007-08-13 06:02:00
We went to Univers al Studios Hollywood last weekend. The last time that we had been there was eight years ago, before we moved to Southern California. Here's what's going on at Universal Studios this summer: E.T. was replaced by The Mummy ("scary" rollercoaster that goes forward and backwards in the dark) a few seasons ago. The ride still seemed popular with nearly hour-long waits throughout the day. Speaking of the recently departed, Beetlejuice no longer has his "graveyard revue" show, but can still be seen roaming the Park for photo ops. I believe that the former Beetlejuice show venue has been transformed into Fear Factor Live. The Wild West Stunt Show is closed. It doesn't look like they're working on its replacement yet. Jurassic Park is still a popular ride with lines in excess of an hour, especially after lunch. It's being marketed as "wetter than ever." Watch for camouflaged employees armed with squirt bottles near the queues and the exit.Back to the Future is the same....
Quick visit to the Quad Cities
2007-08-08 01:01:00
Hola travelers! Finky the Kid made his first ever trip to the Quad Cities the other week. "The QUAD CITIES??" you say. The Quad Cities is quartet of towns surrounding the Mississippi River between Iowa and Illinois, comprised of Davenport and Bettendorf in Iowa and Moline and Rock Island in Illinois.A walking bridge over River Street What's in the Quad Cities? Well, being rural Iowa and Illinois- lots of corn and trees. But there's also lots of down-to-earth folks. The pace is decidely much slower than suburbs odf major metropolitan areas because the closest real "city" is a 2-3 hour drive away. Chicago is 2 hours east and Des Moines is about 3 hours west. Madison, WI is also about 2 hours away. There's also riverboat gambling. And some great historic houses along the Mississippi (at least in the Iowa side, where I spent most of my time.)Where to stay: I stayed at the Radisson in Davenport on River St. A good accomodation, though probably on the pricier side for the area ($175/nig...

Cowabunga! The Orange County Fair is Here!
2007-07-27 15:01:00
The 2007 OC Fair celebrates herefords, surfers, and sand. Every year, the Fair includes thrill rides, cool (and creative!) foods, adorable animals, and lots of fun. One of my favorites was the petting zoo in which you can get up close to real deer, a wallaby, a baby camel, ducks, pigs, goats, llamas, and more. Also, check out the oxen, Bill, Freckles, and Patches. You can hold a baby chick, pet a newborn calf, watch piglets play, and much, much more. Be sure you bring your appetite...the OC Fair has something for everyone. Each year, we stop by Terry's Berries to indulge in a basket of delicious organic berries. You can order a side of dipping chocolate to enjoy with your fruit. We also liked the fish and chips and fried zucchini. You'll also find a wide assortment of funnel cakes, ice cream, and everything you can imagined deep-fried. Some of the Fair vendors are even selling vegetarian corn dogs now! Adult admission is only $8 and children ages 6-12 get in for $4. The Orange Cou...

Salt Lake City - It's Hot, Hot, Hot!
2007-07-27 05:32:00
I just returned from a quick trip to Salt Lake City , Utah the other day. It was my first visit to Utah and I was surprised by the heat. It was over 100 degrees while I was in town and it felt like an oven. Despite the heat, Salt Lake City is a pretty place with beautiful mountains and cute little restaurants lining the streets. One of the best parts was how clean and safe the streets were, even in the city areas. I visited the Gateway Mall which was built for the Olympics several years ago. The outdoor mall has many of the same stores you'd find anywhere else along with a few more local shops. Kids will enjoy the interactive fountain in which water shoots up from multiple holes to the tune of music. I look forward to exploring Utah again one day and seeing more of the state. Have you been to Utah? Let us know what your favorite area was and why.

Visit the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood
2007-07-16 23:20:00
We went to the El Capitan Thea tre in Hollywood to see the new Disney-Pixar movie, Ratatoiulle on Saturday night. Owned by Disney, the theatre is beautifully decorated and the customer service was excellent. Everyone we encountered was extremely positive and helpful. Before the movie was shown, an award-winning performer played classic Disney tunes on the Wurlitzer. There was a live stage show featuring singing and dancing with several major Disney characters including Mary Poppins, Winnie the Pooh, Mickey Mouse, Goofy, Donald Duck, Ratatouille, and Emil (from the new film). Visit the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood for a taste of the old-fashioned, family-friendly theater experience.

Stay and Play at Coney Island in NYC
2007-07-07 20:46:00
Coney Island is a New York City neighborhood that features an amusement area that includes 35 or more separate rides and attractions. Although it's often thought of as an amusement park, it's not a centrally managed theme park like Disneyland or Six Flags. Coney Island rides and attractions are generally open on weekends from Easter until Memorial Day, all week long from Memorial Day until Labor Day, and then weekends from Labor Day until the end of September. The beach and boardwalk are open all year round (although lifeguards are only on duty from Memorial Day to Labor Day) and Nathan's Hot Dogs and the New York Aquarium are open almost every day of the year. The Coney Island Museum is also open on Saturdays and Sundays, from noon to 5 p.m. all year round and costs just 99 cents.During the week, rides and attractions may open at noon and run until the late evening. During the weekends, the same rides and attractions open around noon and may run until the early morning. Plan you...

Beautiful Dana Point in California
2007-07-03 18:38:00
Southern Calif ornia is full of beautiful beaches, scenic places to watch the sunset, and fantastic restaurants. One of our favorite places is Dana Point . The beaches in Dana Point are less commercial than the ones in Los Angeles and are usually full of families enjoying the gorgeous weather and surfers catching waves. There are several great restaurants with breathtaking views in Dana Point. Two of our favorites are The Beach House and Cannons Seafood Restaurant. Located nearby, The Chart House is also very popular. Make your reservations in advance and get there before sunset to enjoy a magnificent view!

Great Seafood Restaurant in Tyson's Corner Mall, Virginia
2007-06-28 01:30:00
While visiting family on the East coast recently, my mom, sister, and I ventured to Tyson's Corner to do a little bridal shopping. For lunch, we decided to check out Coastal Flats, a great seafood restaurant inside the mall. We were pleasantly surprised to find a large porch complete with wooden rocking chairs inside the mall. Coastal Flats is styled like a 1950's seaside beach town. The ambience is great, but the food is even better. Our favorite dish was the Crab Roll. It was a delicious crab cake consisting mainly of lump crab meat. The rolls and butter that accompanied the meal were one of the best parts! The sweet dough tastes good enough to be dessert...but you'll be glad you didn't fill up if you save room for the homemade banana pudding!Coastal Flats is located in McLean, Virginia . (View hours and contact information.) The restaurant was very busy at lunchtime on a weekday. Call ahead or make reservations to shorten your wait. While you're waiting, admire the beautiful ...

Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage at Disneyland
2007-06-22 20:15:00
The new submarine ride, Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage , has opened at Disneyland in Anaheim, California. Disneyland's newest ride features characters from the highly successful 2003 Disney/Pixar film, Finding Nemo.Using a combination of animatronics, underwater projection, and other technologies, Disney Imagineers bring the characters and the underwater experience to life. The submarines serve as research vessels in which Disneyland Guests explore an active undersea volcano. Along the way, the submarines encounter beautiful coral as well as their favorite Finding Nemo characters. In the mid-60s, the Submarine Voyage ride was a popular underwater attraction featuring fish and mermaids. The Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage uses the same lagoon and submarines in order to bring a new story to life. This ride is unique and is already very popular. Expect to wait in long lines in order to experience it. Your best bet is to get to the Park as soon as it opens and go directly for this ride. Yo...

Strawberry Picking at Tanaka Farms
2007-06-18 21:11:00
We visited Tanaka Farms on Saturday to do some strawberry picking. Tanaka is an organic farm located on 30 acres in Irvine, California. It's a beautiful place to tour and has something for kids and adults. During the tour, you take a ride around the farm while learning about and tasting a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables. The strawberry picking tour included samplings of organic green beans, celery, carrots, maui onions, and more. Then, you get to explore the strawberry fields where you can pick and eat as many strawberries as you like. They are incredibly delicious and a lot of fun to pull right from the vine. After the strawberry patch, the tractor ride takes you back to the storefront where they give you a basket of strawberries to take home with you. The Strawberry Tour is less than $15 per person and is a great way to spend an hour with your friends and family. It's also a nice way to teach kids about healthy eating habits and trying a variety of fruits and vegetables.

Country Cookin': Cheap Eats in Virginia
2007-06-15 23:05:00
While on vacation last week, we had the pleasure of eating two meals in Country Cookin ', a down home restaurant with several locations in Virginia . They offer a large salad, side dish, and dessert bar (the "Country Favorites Bar") in addition to menu items. Whenever we go, we always get the salad bar. It's all-you-can-eat and they have the best rolls! My family has been eating at Country Cookin' since I was a baby. Every time we go back, I'm delighted to see that little has changed since I was a kid. They're still offering the same good foods at very reasonable prices. You can find Country Cookin' in Culpeper, Warrenton, and Fredericksburg, in addition to other locations in Virginia. Although they're all good, our favorite is the one in Culpeper, my hometown. They have the largest dining area and are now smoke-free! They also have the best selection of desserts. Enjoy!

Grand Canyon Skywalk - Dream or Nightmare?
2007-03-21 16:53:00
The Grand Canyon Skywalk, a massive glass walkway that perches almost a mile over the Colorado River, officially opened yesterday. The unique horseshoe-shaped Glass Bridge reaches 70 feet from the Grand Canyon's edge. It'll cost you $25 to see the Grand Canyon from this unusual perspective. The Grand Canyon Skywalk Glass Bridge was built by the Hualapai Indian Tribe to provide a one-of-a-kind Grand Canyon experience and to make money off of the tourists who will flock to this attraction.
