Market Madness
2007-06-05 21:49:00 Aaaaaaaaaaaand so the latest madcap idea related to the Waterfront development emerges...a suggestion to relocate the Central Mark et in St. Helier to the seafront. Jersey's Chamber Of Commerce claim the move would be beneficial both to traders and tourism. Following the move the old Market building could then be used as a crafts centre, housing the same kind of premises as found in More About: Madness
Concrete Proof
2007-06-01 16:26:00 Economic Development Minster Phillip Ouzouff has asked that a group be set up, at the expense of mobile phone companies, to monitor radiation from mobile phone masts. In this respect Ouzouff has shown more concern than is normal for a States Minister regarding this issue. Sadly though, as can be expected as standard from a States Minister on this subject, he bleats "there's no concrete proof" of More About: Proof , Concrete
Echoes
2007-05-28 01:08:00 Here's a couple of interesting comparison photographs. The first picture is of the Radisson Hotel, newly built on Jersey's Waterfront, cited by gleeful local Politicans as being "iconic". The next two photographs come from Prora, on the Baltic coast. The buildings pictured are part of a huge holiday complex built by the Third Reich over 60 years ago, designed as a place of leisure and More About: Echoes
CS Spray
2007-05-27 21:37:00 It's come to light that whilst attempting to quell a disturbance at Clos Gossett after last week's Champions League football game, Police used CS Spray against a 15 year old girl. Witnesses also say that Police forced entry into the girl's house - where a fight was taking place - and without giving any warning sprayed "everyone in sight". "3 Years Of Hell"
2007-05-26 15:33:00 "3 years of hell", that's how planning Minister Freddie Cohen this week described the problems that forthcoming Waterfront developments would cause to islanders (though strangely the J.E.P. lessened the impact to "2 years of misery"). So what's this announcement about? The construction of a sunken road - at a cost of £25 million - on the site of the recently completed Route De la Liberation. More About: Hell , Years , Year , Ears
Arts Centre Faces Closure
2007-05-26 14:02:00 Meanwhile....the arts centre in the converted St James Church, St Helier, may be forced to close. The church was purchased by the States and redeveloped into a threatre/arts venue during the mid 1990's, but lack of funding now puts its future in doubt. It's a shame the land it's on isn't worth £50 million. Then they could just sink it and make a tidy profit in the process.... More About: Faces , Arts , Closure , Centre , Sure
Dandara
2007-05-20 17:24:00 As most local residents will be aware, Dandara is the construction company which seems to have a near monopoly on being involved in unslightly, unwanted or publically disliked developments within the island. In Saturday's JEP an interview appeared with Martin Clancy, the company's Managing Director. In stating his case for the benefits of Dandara's projects he cited the Waterfront
A Message To Terry
2007-05-16 15:46:00 Following ever growing criticism concerning States spending, Finance Minster Terry Le Seur has found himself feeling moved enough to write a letter of defence to the JEP, his prime points of retaliation being: "Jersey spends the lowest proportion of national income on public services of any OECD country apart from Mexico." and "Even after the introduction of General Sales Tax, Jersey residents More About: Message , Sage , Mess
Airport Spin
2007-05-16 15:03:00 So....today the new look departure lounge of Jersey Airport opens. The change is basically one of closing off anything but the check-in area to members of the public. This has been done under the guise of improving security measures. However, from the day the plan for this change was publically announced, there was a distinct whiff of spin in the air. I recall last year Airport Director Julian More About: Spin
Walker Defends Banana
2007-05-16 14:36:00 "Don't Knock The Banana " screamed the headline on last night's JEP. This of course is a reference to the new promotional logo of Jersey. In the wake of overwhelming public disdain for both the logo and it's final cost, Chief Minister Frank Walk er made a "robust defence" in the States of spending a quarter of a million pounds on the campaign. Well, at that price, did he have any other choice?! More About: Ends , Walker , Nana
New Bus Station Named!!!!
2007-05-10 14:49:00 After much consideration, Transport Minister Guy De Faye has settled on a name for the new St.Helier bus station. 2007-05-06 14:29:00 Earlier this week Senator Ben Shenton put forward to the States a number of proposals for Governmental reform. Life Enriching?
2007-04-26 20:17:00 Despite overwhelmingly negative public response to a preview last August, Chief Minister Frank Walker today signed off a quarter of a million pound campaign to promote Jersey. Public appreciation doesn't appear to have changed much with the campaign having been unveiled in full. A poll on the Channel TV website shows 57% of viewers dislike the campaign, 27% think it could have been better, and More About: Life
UFO's Over Guernsey
2007-04-26 15:36:00 It seems our sister island has been the subject of interest for a couple of UFO's. Yesterday whilst making a final approach toward Guernsey, an Aurigny pilot sighted an unusually large green and gold disc-shaped object "bright like the sun", hanging stationary in the sky at an altitude of roughly 1500 feet. The pilot estimated the object to be approximately one mile wide. It was also seen by a More About: Over
The Waterfront
2007-04-21 13:59:00 As a slight addition to the previous post concerning the Weighbridge, I thought it would be interesting to show the extent to which the seafront of St.Helier has been completely overdeveloped. Here are a couple of comparison pictures. The first is of the Weighbridge in the 1960's. Notice the small park area, and the Queen Victoria statue still in place. The Weighbridge
2007-04-21 13:54:00 Plans are afoot to construct a National Art Gallery on the Weigh bridge bus station site. Sir Michael Hopkins is currently drawing up designs for the building. Now, I'm worried about this for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it seems to be standard procedure on this island that when the word "iconic" is used regarding a development, the resulting design or construction is completey out-of-character More About: Ridge , Bridge
Phone Masts Again
2007-04-21 13:31:00 Earlier this week Planning Minister Freddie Cohen announced all applications for the erection of mobile phone masts will be put on hold. This is due to some countryside masts not having been suitably landscaped to match their surroundings. It's just a shame that Mr. Cohen isn't as concerned about public health as aesthetics. The Public Gets...
2007-04-16 17:23:00 ...what the public wants? Readers of the Jersey Evening Post have apparently voted overwhelmingly for the new Goods & Services Tax to be added to the price of an item when it reaches the till. This means if an item is priced at £3.75, the 3% tax will be added to that price after the cashier enters it into the till. Criminal Coppers?
2007-04-13 13:21:00 It's been reported - though no reason has been given - that one Sergeant Andrew Barrot of the States of Jersey Police has resigned following a period of suspension. Frank's Fantasy Stroll
2007-04-07 20:14:00 Frank Walker, Jersey's Chief Minister, braved the mean streets of St. Helier last night to personally check out just how dangerous they become once darkness falls and the alcohol begins to flow. And at the end of his little sojourn amongst the commoners, what was Walker's judgement upon the situation? "The streets of St. Helier are no more dangerous now than they were 40 years ago". Illegal CCTV Use
2007-04-07 14:29:00 It's illegal in Jersey to use CCTV in a public area without clearly signposting the fact.
