Go to Naples for a 'pizza' the action
2008-06-09 00:00:00
Ditch Pizza Hut staples for a slice of the real deal in one of Naples ' prestigious pizzerias.First stop should be Antica Pizzeria Brandi, the home of the Margherita since 1889. Now a little touristy, the restaurant still offers great pizzas as well as a huge variety of other Italian classics.Diners with an appetite for tradition should try Da Michele, often touted as the best in the city. Choice is restricted to pizza marinara, Margherita or the baked cheese calzone, but lack of range is more than offset by the finely tuned flavours. For the pizza of presidents, head to Di Matteo - the restaurant picked to serve Bill Clinton during a state visit.Perfect pizzas are matched by prime location on the main street of the old city and the menu also boasts a good selection of nibbles to sate hunger during the restaurant's busiest hours. As of this summer, Naples' famous Pizza Napolitana will be officially recognised by the European Union as a "regional speciality", much like Fren...

Sardinian sightseeing by the sea
2008-06-09 00:00:00
For one of Europe's most amazing marine wonders, head to Sardinia's Grotta di Nettuno. The caves can be reached by boat or down a steep cliff-side staircase of 656 steps. From there, follow the natural entrance to a vast internal salt lake stretching 120 metres across.Continuous sea movements in the caves have formed mysterious chambers and caverns around the lake but the water feature itself is worth a look for the unusual columns rising out of it.In the 18th century the complex was discovered and used by local fishermen. It was also the home of the rare monk seal, now extinct. All visits to the Grotta are part of hourly tours lasting approximately 45 minutes. They include English and Italian commentary and occasionally French and German translation too.For other sightseeing ideas in Sardinia, pay a visit to Alghero's medieval walled centre and splash out on a horse-drawn carriage tour of its picturesque narrow streets.

A heritage holiday in Bratislava
2008-06-06 00:00:00
Swot up on Slovakian history with a tour of Bratislava's most renowned Jewish heritage sights. The city was once one of the most prominent centres of traditional Jewish learning in Europe, with rabbi and scholar Chatam Sofer leading the field in the late 18th/early 19th centuries. His tomb, part of a former Jewish cemetery dating back from 1670 to 1847, has since become a monument to Jewish learning and a popular place of pilgrimage at the foothills of the Small Carpathian Mountains between the Danube and Bratislava Castle.Meanwhile, the city's Museum of Jewish Culture charts a more tragic period of Jewish history with moving exhibits about the community that was decimated during World War II.A cross commemorates them under the Staromestska highway to the pedestrian old town and there is also a small Holocaust Memorial near where the old synagogue once stood.Bratislava's Municipal Museum provides a more general overview of the capital's history.

Cafe culture in Vienna
2008-06-02 00:00:00
The Austrian capital's Cafe Central is a smart choice for a variety of reasons - not only was it the traditional haunt of Viennese intellectuals including Leon Trotsky, it is also one of the most beautiful dining venues in the city.If you can take your eyes off the delicious display of cakes and strudel for long enough, the splendid architecture offers a different kind of sensory feast. The soaring cathedral-like ceilings and impeccable restoration work make this 19th-century building one of the best places to sit back and sip coffee. The surrounds have unsurprisingly become a bit of a tourist trap, but bear with the bustle if only to sample the cafe's sweet speciality - the Dobostorte.Thin layers of biscuit sponge, a caramel/chocolate frosting and caramelised toffee glaze on top make this a dessert-lover's dream. For other Viennese cafes try the Mozart, which featured in classic novel/film The Third Man, or Diglas.

Tomato tossing in Spain
2008-06-02 00:00:00
For the largest food fight on earth look no further than Bunyol's rather fruity fiesta this August.Every year the population in the sleepy Spanish village near Valencia swells four-fold as La Tomatina sees battle commence - with tomatoes.Participants arm themselves from a huge 125,000 kilogram arsenal of ripe fruit in the town centre before hurling their missiles at anyone they choose from the 30,000-army of other players. The rules for the two-hour standoff are straightforward - no other projectiles but tomatoes may be thrown and these must be squished first.La Tomatina is thought to date back to 1945 when a costumed participant in the town's annual parade was accidentally knocked to his feet by youths. As he vented his wrath, the kids sought revenge by hurling salad grenades at him from a nearby vegetable stall. They have returned every year since in greater numbers.Bunyol is located 30 miles west of Valencia and surrounded by mountain ranges.

A whale of a time in Norway
2008-05-23 00:00:00
Late summer may be all about beaches and bathing for most holidaymakers, but it is also the best time to spot whales off the Scandinavian coast.A Norwegian whale safari in northern Tysfjord is possibly the best way to catch a glimpse of the ocean giants close up.Tourists have the option of joining large boat groups, an inflatable dinghy tour or even snorkeling trips among killer whales feasting on the local supply of herring. The mammals have been visiting the area since 1987, although numbers have depleted slightly in recent years. However, the spectacular scenery around this part of Scandinavia ensures nature-lovers should leave satisfied regardless of whale count. To ensure the preservation of this amazing species, it is advised holidaymakers choose their tour group carefully. Many companies now offer responsible safaris heeding conservation guidelines about proximity to the animals etc.

Danish theme park offers sweet memories

A sweet tooth and taste for adventure are all that is required to enjoy one of Denmark's best theme parks - BonBon Land.Boasting a position among the country's top five attractions, this candy heaven in Holme-Olstrup was inspired by a local sweet factory in 1992.As well as a host of wacky rides, the centre also has a children's theatre, candy workshops and daily sea lion show. However, it's the white-knuckle rollercoaster Wild Boar that most people pay a visit for. The terrifying ride features a vertical climb up a tower and straight back down the other side before a series of stomach-churning loop-the-loops high above the park. It's no surprise this thrill-fest was recently voted Denmark's best rollercoaster, boasting considerable G-force at various stages of the track.Other good Scandinavian theme parks can be found at Grona Lund in Stockholm, Sweden, and Dyrehavsbakken near Copenhagen, also in Denmark.

Political play in Prague
2008-05-23 00:00:00
Plays penned by presidents may not be an obvious entertainment choice, but when the former leader in question is also a world-renowned dramatist in his own right it makes for must-see viewing.Vaclav Havel's Leaving is his first play in 20 years, during which time he has been at the forefront of Czech politics. His new drama deals with the painful adjustment of life out of office and drew a huge crowd and rave reviews on its May premiere at the city's Archa Theatre. The general consensus is that this, his 19th play in total, is also one of his finest, dealing with themes of uncertainty and collapsing values. But the 71-year-old playwright and leader of Czechoslovakia's Velvet Revolution denies the work is either autobiographical or an attack on his presidential successor, as press have speculated. Those who miss out on the controversial play in Prague can take comfort from the fact a string of other venues have already snapped it up including London's Orange Tree Theatre in September.

Lodz of fun for Polish street racers
2008-05-23 00:00:00
If you feel the need for speed on a Polish break head to the country's second largest city to watch monthly street racing. The exhilarating sport was recently legalised in Lodz in a bid by police to exert more control over proceedings and cut the number of crashes and injuries. It means that every month specially designated sections of public roads are shut for the races, which see drivers clocking speeds of more than 180 miles per hour.Although these areas are monitored by police, no speed restrictions have been issued making the spectacle a terrifyingly thrilling one for bystanders to witness. For an altogether tamer automobile experience in Poland , a road trip from Rzeszow to Zamosc comes highly recommended. The 100-mile-long route zigzags across Polish countryside and through a plethora of historic towns and cities far away from the usual tourist trail.

Sozzled sausages in Moscow

Meat and beer dominate the menu at Moscow 's traditional Kolbasoff bar/eatery.Literally meaning "sausages", Kolbasoff is refreshingly unpretentious while still offering mouth-watering local cuisine. Those with a penchant for the porcine on their plates are recommended the pork in mushroom sauce, while sausages with sauerkraut is a house speciality.Dark leather couches and framed photos on the wall decorate the interior but are somewhat overshadowed by three plasma screens on football nights where the beer taps on tables make this a prime match-watching spot.Other sports bars around the city include the Gradus Bar, which once housed Stalin's private cinema. Nowadays two dance floors and a huge array of beers make it slightly less fearful!Liga Pap with a giant screen and banked seats is also a safe bet, as is wallet-friendly chain Kruzhka with 20 cheap and cheerful outlets around the city.
