Plaza Las Americas Come Rain or Shine
2007-08-08 02:07:00
If you arrive in Puerto Rico and find that the weather is not cooperating there are still plenty of things to do. One of my top suggestions is to take a trip to Plaza Las Americas (especially if you need to keep children occupied - there is a 32 lane Bowling Alley and a large fast food court): Plaza Las Americas is the largest shopping mall in the Caribbean and one of the largest in southeastern United States. It is located in Hato Rey, approximately 10-15mins from San Juan. The logo represents the three ships (the Niña, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria) sailed by Christopher Columbus’s during his 1942 voyage (more…)

Concerts in July in Puerto Rico
2007-07-04 00:13:00
July is a busy month for music here in Puerto Rico , with headliners such as Gwen Stafani and English Pop duo Erasure topping the bill. So here is a list of some of the concerts taking place in July: White Lion at The Arena on Friday, July 6, 2007 This is a band that I have never heard before, but apparently White Lion were a hard rock band that were around in the 1980s and early 1990s. They were formed in New York City in 1983 by Danish-born vocalist Mike Tramp and guitarist Vito Bratta. I am not sure what the current line-up is for this concert. (more…)

What Will the Weather be Like in Puerto Rico
2007-06-21 02:52:00
What will the weather be like in August? is a common question that I see on the various forums out there, so I thought I would take this opportunity to detail the average weather here in Puerto Rico for the rest of the year. The following information was taken from the NOAA website for San Juan Airport. These are typical temperatures and rainfall (but are not a guarantee of what will actual occur this year). Remember, the typical forecast for the summer in Puerto Rico is hot with the chance of a shower. You will see this forecast most days and yes, sometimes it will rain, but it will be over fairly quickly and will dry out almost immediately. So do not despair if you are checking the 7 day forecast and you see showers; chances are that it will not be that drastic, and you will have a great time here in Puerto Rico. (more…)

Old San Juan Wired and Free
2007-05-27 04:33:00
The public plazas; Colón, de Armas and San José in Old San Juan will have free internet access as of August according to the Mayor of San Juan, Jorge Santini. These will be the first public plazas to offer wi-fi, and it is hoped that this service will help to bring more people to those areas. The plan will be expanded to the Plaza de la Convalecencia, in Río Piedras; in part of the Universidad Ave. and at the Plaza Antonia Quiñones, Plaza del Ancla and Ventana al Mar, in Condado by January. Maybe I get to write these posts from Old San Juan in the future…

5 Things to Do In Ponce
2007-05-18 03:24:00
Ponce is located on the south side of Puerto Rico, approximately 60-90 minutes by car (traffic permitting). The fastest route from San Juan is to head south on expressway #52. This is a toll road, but it is much faster than taking route #1. The drive is extremely scenic and there are a couple of stopping points along the way, to allow you to capture the scenery. As you drive south you will see the landscape change from green mountainous to more flat arid landscape. (more…)

Sahara Dust Storm Reaches Puerto Rico…
2007-05-17 05:21:00
OK, so if you were here in Puerto Rico the last couple of days, you would have noticed how hazy it has been. Today was especially hazy. The reason according to the MODIS website: A dust plume several hundred kilometers across blew off the west coast of Africa on May 9, 2007. The MODIS on the Terra satellite took this picture the same day. This image shows the dust plume fanning out approximately 500 kilometers west of the coast. The plume is thickest in the south, near Cape Verde, although a thin arm of dust stretches out toward the Canary Islands in the north. The thickest part of the plume is tan in color, while the thinnest portion appears ghostly gray. Over land, the dust is not thick enough to block the satellite’s view of the land surface. A dust storm this large can track across the Atlantic Ocean and be carried by the trade winds bound for Central and North America and the Caribbean. It takes about 5-7 days to reach Puerto Rico. So the timimg is about right for this haze ...

Smaller Residential Construction around Puerto Rico
2007-05-15 00:13:00
I thought I would follow-up on my recent post about new residential construction around San Juan with some information about projects around Puerto Rico that are on smaller and more affordable scale. There appears to be a lot of new residential projects going on throughout the island from simple single storey homes, walk-up complexes and larger gated communities. Areas such as Bayamon, Carolina, Cayey Caguas, Gurabo, Cabo Rojo and Luquillo to name a few all have new residential construction either on going or in the process of beginning. (more…)

Fried to Perfection in Puerto Rico
2007-05-13 18:55:00
I came across this article the other day and it made my mouth water just reading it. Mary Ellen Botter of the Dallas Morning News, writes about the famous Puerto Rican ‘Fried Kiosk Food’ and how they may not be good for your diet; but will certainly put a smile on your face. The article talks about the types of food available at the various kiosks around the island; cuchifritos (fried finger food), alcapurria (cigar-shape plaintain-and-meat fritter), fish pancakes, meat pies, corn sticks, kebabs and baseball-size orbs of potato or plantain with a meat center and crisp-crust jacket. New Residential Construction in San Juan Area
2007-05-12 15:58:00
If you have driven around San Juan and the surrounding area, you can not have missed the amount of construction that is taking place. There are construction sites for hotels, office buildings, as well as, residential complexes. As for the large residential projects that are currently underway or in the planning phase, the majority appear to be ‘high end’ projects… In other words; lots of $$$ if you want to purchase an apartment in one of these projects. Top Five Misconceptions of Puerto Rico
2007-05-10 18:45:00
I started my site www.visit-the-coqui.com to help in the adjustment phase of moving to Puerto Rico . So far the site is fairly small but my intention is to keep providing information that visitors to the site and to Puerto Rico will find helpful. When friends in the US found out that we were moving here, some of the questions that we were asked amazed me. So here are my ‘Top Five ’ misconceptions of Puerto Rico 1. Puerto Rico is some how connected to the mainland United States; either by bridge or like Mexico. What I hear you say? Well that can be the only explaination as to why we were asked ‘How long will it take you to drive to Puerto Rico?’ (more…)
