You See the Strangest Things While Driving in Puerto Rico
2008-02-06 04:19:00 I have to say that since moving to Puerto Rico I have seen some strange things while driving: Cars reversing back up an ‘on’ ramp. Cars crossing a grass covered central reservation in order to do a U turn. A car doing a 3 point turn at an intersection when the lights are green Cars cutting across you on the freeway because they have left it too late to make the exit And many more. But today, I got to see something I had not seen before, either here or in fact any where. While driving home I noticed in the distance a small white pickup with make-shift wooden sides. As I got closer I had to do a ‘double take’ as I realized that the pickup was transporting a horse. A horse (and a decent sized one at that) in the back of a standard sized pickup. Now that’s a first for me. May be you don’t think this is strange, but I was surprised to see that horse there. The passenger appeared happy at my interest, especially when I took the photo (apologies for the quality of t... More About: Driving , Things
Corona Extra Pro Surf Circuit Comes to Rincon
2008-02-05 02:18:00 Photo by susanicaAny would be surfers out there that will be here in Puerto Rico between February 22 to 24, should consider heading west to Rincon . The APSPR Corona Extra Pro Surf Circuit will be holding their latest event at Domes Beach, Rincon. The beach gets its name from the old nuclear power station’s dome shape (it’s closed now), just north of Rincon lighthouse. At this time of year, waves can be any where from 2 to 15 feet. It is one of the best known beaches for surfing and back in 1968, the World Championship was held there and Fred Hemmings came out on top. The APSPR Corona Extra Pro Surf Circuit event is one of the biggest to visit Puerto Rico and with $15,000 in prize money; it will attract a lot of great surfers. Don’t worry if surfing is not you thing, with the event in town, Rincon is going to be buzzing (so if you are looking for something a little quieter, may be check out Cabo Roja). Don’t forget, that February is also one of the best times to Whale watch h...

Ponce Carnival Means Party Time in Puerto Rico
2008-01-31 12:10:00 Looking for something to do this weekend? You could head down to Ponce on the south coast of Puerto Rico and participate in the annual Ponce Carnival . The Ponce carnival takes place the week before Ash Wednesday and this year they are celebrating its 150th anniversary. The carnival is the south’s answer to Old San Juan’s San Sebastian Street Festival and New Orleans Mardi Gras. This year’s carnival starts on Wednesday January 30 and continues until Shrove Tuesday, Februray 5th. During the carnival you will see street parties and processions led by Vejigantes. A Vejigante is someone who dresses in a devil like mask and a colorful costume; similar to a clown (you can’t miss them). There will also be local artisan and musicians and plenty of attractions for all the family. The carnival ends with the Entierro de la Sardina (Funeral of the Sardine), led by drag queen mourners who mark the death of the sardine. Why a sardine? It’s symbolic and represents the fact that many fish ... More About: Party , Time
Whale Watching in Puerto Rico
2008-01-29 00:59:00 With February quickly approaching, we are about to enter into the best time of year to see Humpback whales off the west coast of Puerto Rico . If you have the chance to head to the west coast around the Rincon area, you might be lucky enough to see these magnificent, endangered species during their mating and birthing season. Photo by Seamus Murray. Please note that the above image was not taken off the coast of Puerto Rico. But, if you are lucky, you might get to see something just as incredible Here in Puerto Rico, the month of February is the peak season for whale watching, but whales have been spotted from January to Late March. One of the best places to spot these magnificent Humpback whales is from the observation park at the Rincón Lighthouse on the west coast. If you would prefer to see the whales from the sea, I have been told that you should just ask at the marina to see if there are any whale watching trips available. Two other locations that are also worth considering ... More About: Whale , Watching , Whale Watching

Take Underwater Photos with the SeaLife EcoShot Digital Camera
2008-01-12 20:59:00 If you are coming here to Puerto Rico to do some snorkeling or scuba diving, then having an underwater camera to capture the amazing underwater scenes is a must. There are plenty of disposable cameras that you can take down a few feet and of course you could buy a waterproof case for your existing camera. But what if you are diving a little deeper? Today, I came across the Sealife SL321 EcoShot that the manufacturers claim can be taken down as deep as 75 feet; which (as a none diver) sounds like a lot to me. The camera does not have an optical zoom, but does offer a 4 X digital zoom and 6 megapixels. I have not used the camera, but here are some of its features; 6.0 mp CCD Sensor - For sharp images Depth Rated to 75ft / 23m Shockproof Tested to 6ft/2m Large 2″ LCD for easy viewing and aiming Land & Sea - Exposure Modes for vivid colors on land or underwater Video mode with audio Spy Mode - Takes continuous pictures at set time intervals Fast start-up time and shutter respo... Celebrate Three Kings Day
2008-01-05 22:08:00 Photo by jbcurio Tonight here in Puerto Rico, thousands of children will be going to bed having first placed a shoe box full of straw under their bed, along with a wish list. Why? Because tomorrow is Three Kings Day or Los Tres Reyes Magos and children all over the island go to bed hoping that tonight, while they are sleeping, they will be visited by the Three Kings and their camels. The straw is of course to feed the camels. Three Kings Day or Los Tres Reyes Magos is traditionally a day of celebration here in Puerto Rico, where children awake to find the straw gone (eaten by the camels) and gifts left my the magical Three Kings. Of course, the Three Kings will only visit if the children has been good… During the day, families will also get together and share a special meal in celebration of the visit of the Three Kings to the baby Jesus. It is just another magical tradition that takes place here in Puerto Rico over the Christmas period. Related Posts: San Sebastian Street Festiv... More About: Celebrate

Coquito – Puerto Rican Christmas Eggnog
2007-12-06 22:50:00 Here in Puerto Rico there are many traditional foods and drinks that appear over the Christmas Holiday Season and Coquito is one of my favorites. Coquito is Puerto Rico’s Christmas eggnog and it is delicious. If you are here in Puerto Rico over the Christmas period, more than likely you will be offered a glass or two during your stay. If you are unfortunate, to be elsewhere, you can always make your own. The following recipe is taken from ‘A Taste of Puerto Rico’ by Yvonne Ortiz (one of my favorite Puerto Rican Cook Books). Coquito Ingredients (makes 5 cups): 1 cup of coconut milk 1 cup sweetened condensed milk 1 cup evaporated milk 1 cup white rum 1 cup of water 3 cinnamon sticks 4 egg yolks, well beaten Ground cinnamon for decoration Recipe: In a blender or food processor combine the milks and the rum. Martinique Earthquake Felt Here in Puerto Rico
2007-11-30 11:15:00 Yesterday around 3pm there was a 7.4 magnitude earthquake about 90miles off the north west coast of Martinique in the Caribbean. Fortunately, it appears that was little or no damage and no major injuries. The BBC website is reporting that 2 people in Martinique were injured (no details available). The quake was so large that it was felt here in Puerto Rico as a 6.2 magnitude quake. I was in my office in Rio Piedras and the building began to shake slightly just after 3pm. It was nothing major, but it certainly felt strange. From all accounts here in Puerto Rico the quake was felt throughout the island from San Juan to Cabo Roja. It was the biggest earthquake to hit this part of the Caribbean since the 1940’s. There have been no reports of damage or injuries here in Puerto Rico. The worst quake to hit Puerto Rico was back in 1918 when a 7.3 quake hit just off the coast of Aguadilla. Image Source: elnuevodia.com More About: Earthquake , Felt

Puerto Rico Adds Another Blue Flag Beach

They also re-certified 4 other beaches here in Puerto Rico making a total of 5 Blue Flag Beaches. The global blue flag program is based on a host of criteria that cover: 1) Environmental Education and Information 2) Water Quality 3) Environmental Management 4) Safety and Services For a beach to be designated as a Blue Flag Beach they need to comply with the 29 criteria in the categories above. The 5 current Blue Flag beaches here in Puerto Rico are: La Monserrate in Luquillo This is probably the most famous beach here in Puerto Rico and is known locally as just Luquillo Beach. A Good Day for the Coqui
2007-10-28 12:49:00 For those of you who are unfamiliar with Puerto Rico; the coqui is the small native frog (and unofficial mascot) that is small in statue; but loud in voice. The coqui ranges length ranges between 15mm-80mm in length and be green, brown and yellowish. The frog gets its name from the distinct evening call ‘koo-kee’ of the male coqui. The sound resonates all around the island, as early evening sets. If you have ever been to Puerto Rico, you will have heard the coqui… The coqui has been a threatened species since 1977 and continuing deforestation and industrial development have destroyed the fogs habitat. The good news for the coqui is that this week the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on Tuesday designated rocky stream banks and privately owned land in southeastern Puerto Rico as critical habitat for a threatened species of the coqui. They have designated 260 acres of land adjacent to farms, roads and homes spanning a southeastern section of the tropical island to help protect th... More About: Good

See Old San Juan’s Historic Sights with a Ranger
2007-09-23 16:57:00 Most people when they arrive in San Juan will either head off on their own to see the various sights or arrange to see them with a tour guide. There is a third option which I stumbled upon the other day, and that is to see the sights with a National Park Ranger . There are several tours available both in English and Spanish, unfortunately though, they are only available on certain days of the week. But, if you are here in San Juan on the days that the tours are offered, it might be worth checking them out. Note: for most of these tours there is a maximum of 30 people. The Fortification Walk: This is the tour if you would like to learn more about how the fortifications helped protect the Spaniards for over 350 years. The ranger will take you on a 2-3 mile walk through Old San Juan and the tour lasts between 1.5 and 2 hours. The English tour takes place on Saturdays at 10am from the main plaza of San Cristóbal. The Spanish version of the tour takes place on Sundays at 10am from the... More About: Sights , Historic
