An Afternoon at Edinburgh Airport
2007-07-03 09:39:00 As I sit here in erm, erm - quick swivel of head - Edinburgh Airport , I can?t help but wonder what it is all about! The overly-chatty yet on-the-ball taxi-driver (who had driven me suitably well through Edinburgh?s usual bouts of rain and sun to the airport) had asked me exactly the same question, to which I could not reply! Unwittingly, this over-tipped driver who nearly departed with my suitcase still in his boot, set me on course for a journey of wonderment! For starters as I sit here looking out of the departure terminal windows I know that I will be thinking exactly the same thing in Heathrow and in Hong Kong before finally arriving in Kaohsiung; here my son and wife will thankfully relieve me of having to think any further!Yesterday, two lunatics drove a jeep loaded with explosive potential into the terminal at Glasgow airport! ?When is it going to stop? people ask? Many others just say ?why??Also whilst we are in question time....how big is our galaxy and does God prefer salt... More About: Afternoon
A New Life, A New View
2007-05-17 03:34:00 Today, this evening, I fly to the Edinburgh in Scotland! I leave Kaohsiung, Taiwan after nearly six years of living here to return to the country that I grew up in! A country that I have only visited or passed through briefly over the last twenty years, a country that is as alien to me as Mongolia or Argentina and a country that is going to be my home once again! Is Scotland still the same, is life still as I remember it when I used to run the streets after school and until the search parties were forming? Is it still that same place where my O'Grade mathematics teacher could not stop laughing when I told him that I wanted to join the Merchant Navy and needed to resit my maths O'Grade to do so (he thought that I was unable to add two plus two). Are queues still foot achingly long, corner shop wares still grossly expensive and are the cities inhabitants still grumpy by nature? All will be revealed!I fly to the UK courtesy of Cathay Pacific (after I gave them a rather large donation)... Rent a House in Kaohsiung Now
2007-05-05 16:21:00 This property lark is doing my head in! I need to rent out my apartment in Kaohsiung and rent one in Edinburgh! Easy you say??????Let me say otherwise! People have been known to rent houses in Taiwan only to be last seen walking down the road with the settee on their back and the kitchen sink on the dogs! An empty shell of concrete and dust to greet us upon our return from curiosity as to why the rent has not been paid!It is not easy, not only because rental terms tend to cover shabby and non-nondescript hovels reached after a heart-thumping climb up some dingy, dirty and rickety stairs that only barely defy gravity! The earthquake struck, the building shivered and cracked but settled at an awkward angle. Our first apartment (my wife and I) in Kaohsiung resided next to a brothel, was accessed from a stairwell by a large steel door that we realized we needed to shut at night after we started to find the well being used as a public lavatory! Our second apartment caused us concern as t... More About: House , A House , Rent , Ouse
Paris Airport
2007-04-27 18:47:00 After eight hours at Charles De Gaulle Airport , Paris .........All I can say is........Charles De Gaulle, if you could you should do something for the French, this is not good!Wow, is that my flight they are calling? I have never looked forward so much to clambering onboard a 12 hour flight, one that will take me away from this overcrowded sweat pit!An argument broke out in the cafeteria earlier! The waitresses said that their service was so slow because ......... it was all in French so I didn't understand a word! The football team that is getting drunk, they don't like the place either! The sockets don't work as I plugged my laptop in and it shutdown unexpectedly. It is still hot, I'm onto my third t-shirt and second pair of socks - I hope the customs at Kaohsiung don't have a shock! The lights keep flickering which seemingly cause headaches due to the complaints around and the abrupt refusal to sell me some water at the newsagents was well, shocking!I can't quite imitate a F...
A Letter; To the Passenger in Seat 42B
2007-04-27 14:14:00 Dear SirI write this letter to you as an apology for circumstances that arose, events that maybe I worsened though my poor attitude! If you recall (of course you will, how could you forget), I sat next to you on a recent flight from Bangkok to Paris! It was not a good flight, no 12 hour long flights are but I think you suffered unduly due to my acts at the time.Sir, I don?t like to talk to people on planes! I like to sit in my seat with an invisible metal shield around me so I apologize for completely ignoring your introductions, your proffered hand and if I remember correctly putting my finger to my lips in the international sign language of ?be quiet?. I would like to mention here that I did not damage your jacket on purpose; I was simply climbing over you to get to the toilet when I stood on its hem. It thus ripped itself off the hook of the seat in front, the hook that it was hanging on! I think that next time you fly you should fold up your suit and put it in the overhead locker... A Job Interview 4000 Miles away!
2007-04-27 13:29:00 Two days ago I left my wife and son for the first time in two months to attend a job interview in Southampton for the Position of Engineering Superintendent , the first time that I have been away from my family for over two months and the first time that I have attended an interview that involved three planes, a train, two taxis and a ferry! Wow, this was no short trip in suit and tie down to the end of the road! This was a full-blown assault course, hurdles of patience, uniformed obstacles to grin and bear and cattle market style queues that tested the bladder without remorse! This was Kaohsiung, Taiwan to Southampton, England via Bangkok and Paris. This was definitely the wrong way to arrive for an interview, exhausted with bloodshot eyes, a thirst that would drain any oasis and the wish to never sit down again! But the interview happened, I spent four or five hours being cross-examined and then I headed off and to a hotel for the night! I ended up at the Holiday Inn Express Way, W... More About: Interview , Miles , View , Mile , Away
My Son the Model
2007-04-25 14:08:00 My mother called me a "traitor", my wife told me to 'slow down'!All my life I have derided people who take their little children along to photo-shoots, opportunistic advertising in the hope of seeing them as the next 'R-Girl', the Face of Davenport Baby Milk or the child-star to be! I have felt saddened at the thought of poor children the world over being formed in this way, made to smile and to wear make-up and forced to perform to the 'whims' of a cameraman or agent!Last weekend my wife, son and I took a train trip to Taipei, my son to enter a photo shoot for advertising baby-milk in some magazine or other ............ cringe! I mean the photo-shoot only took a couple of hours, so really we went all the way from Kaohsiung to Taipei so that my son could take a train trip (he loves trains)and so that one of his remote Uncles could spend time with him. Excuses ........... Excuses! The photo-shoot was a disaster; baby's screaming as parents dragged them unwillingly across the f... More About: Model
A Trip to Kenting and the Yoho Beach Resort
2007-04-16 04:41:00 This weekend my family and I went on holiday, not far mind you, just a taxi and two buses away to the holiday town of Kent ing and the Yo Ho Beach Resort . I went to escape the pressure of hunting for a new job, my wife to get away from my pressures of hunting for a job and my son because he didn't have much choice in the matter!I have alot to say, I even have 400 photographs to back my words up! I will though restrict myself to the following;Shame on you YoHo, what a resort you are! We chose this hotel to stay at as it portrayed itself as a 'fun for all the family' place, no need to leave until it's time to go! We arrived at the resort and were quite impressed, water-slides, swimming pools, shops, choreographed events and a listing of restaurants that had the taste buds salivating! When we arrived we felt at home, the place lived up to expectations with a good room! It was when it came time to eat that life started to fall apart! When the Rain Comes Down
2007-04-12 15:16:00 It's raining! I woke up this morning and it was raining, not a startling fact in itself but for a brief instant my life flashed up strong as if viewable on a giant TV screen on the ceiling above my head! It's raining, it's 7.30am, my wife and baby are asleep beside me and I have everything that I or anybody else could possibly want in life.In fact a large purplish stamp should be embedded upon my forehead that reads "this man is satisfied"! I have a brand new high capacity MP3 player to play the thousands of songs that I have downloaded from the web with my super duper new self-built computer, with the flat screen panel that is just so cool! We have our dream cars parked in our garage below, the kitchen is being remodeled next week and we have a holiday home in Spain! I am fit, healthy and good looking, promotion at work is on its way and the enormous salary raise will ensure that my bank manager offers me coffee and biscuits when I visit. Yet it's raining outside! As I look at m... More About: Rain , Down , Come , When
Global Warming and the Community Spirit
2007-04-08 14:52:00 I'm not a sceptic, I just feel that we should improve our environment out of respect for ourselves, our neighbours and our children of the future, not simply because a bunch of hysterical media reports, politicians and hyped-up scientists keep on telling us so! Instead of planting endless corn crops that will in-turn require lots more land (that will in the end lead to the destruction of rain-forests for such), that will still pollute the atmosphere as large pick-up's and SUV's with tinted windows are driven aimlessly around by image-conscious Americans, and that will quite possibly increase poverty in third world countries as the price of grain shoots up and becomes unaffordable to many (the local baker included)! Why don't we start with some simple things in-life..........1. Let's stop buying ten little drinks in individual plastic bottles and just buy one large one! This provides two benefits, it reduces the amount of plastic required and it costs less as well! The Struggling Writer and The Advertising Scandal
2007-04-07 16:05:00 I am a struggling writer! I struggle to write something worthwhile!Just the other day, during my brains agonising struggles, it dawned on me that over the last two months I had not written one article, not one sad ?memo-to-self? nor had I entered one word into my sad Blog, yet I have been sitting at my computer struggling about it all! I now see myself as the struggling painter, the one who has achieved nothing more than re-coating the drab-grey front door of my sister-in-laws house; she assuming that she has helped me somewhat on the road to enlightenment.I looked around the other day (or twenty) for some path to follow, some enlightenment on the search engines for struggling writers and realised that here was the last place that I should be looking and that I should after all just write something and write it well instead of searching for the answer! When I started writing four years ago I took pains to correct my grammar and to reread closely the finished works. My Carbon Footprint and the watter lapping at my feet!
2007-03-29 02:49:00 I've got this serious ache in my neck! I keep on turning around to see if I am making a carbon footprint, something that presumably looks like a dirty black shoe-print in some clean and unblemished snow? Maybe, because I am only walking and not driving a large gas-guzzling SUV, I am not sullying the ground behind me; but then I ask myself, if I am zooming along in a plane that is spewing out "carbon footprints" how am I supposed to see them? Do they not then fall rapidly to the ground, say onto poor Mr Seamus Bloggs who is busy tending to his garden!"Eeee Bye Gum" Seamus said "is it a shoe, no, it's a large footprint if my eyes have not deceived me". He didn't say much more as the next carbon footprint, dropped from a military jet (government approved for the production of as many carbon footprints as it wants) landed on his head! The other day I saw a photograph in the Taipei Times Newspaper (March 28th, 2007). There were a large group of tourist eyeing in a awe a massive glacie... The Social Ladder in Taiwan
2007-03-19 02:56:00 I like Taiwan and more specifically the port and southern city of Kaohsiung! It is a city on the move, with potential and it is improving in leaps and bounds with regard to liveability and amenities. It does though have a very long way to go! I say this as certain aspects of life bring it back to the dark ages and not only with reference to a previous blog titled Do the Taiwanese Still Eat Dog?, I don't want to dredge up this conversation again but I must pick on dogs, or more so their owners for the mess they are making in the local parks!Every Sunday a horde of dog lovers descend on the park outside my house! Hundreds of dogs appear with their look-a-like owners and all spend two hours or more producing piles of 'dog waste' on the potentially green grass. I'm not sure what the real reason behind this meet is; I certainly don't want to get near enough to find out but they all mill around yapping whilst the dogs get hyper-excited and start raping each other. There are brown dog... More About: Social , Soci
The 2007 Kaohsiung Lantern Festival
2007-03-18 00:58:00 This years Lanterns Fest ival s have now finished the world over and all the hard work that went into the creation and construction of thousands of exhibits will be forgotten about until next year! Here in Koahsiung, the Lantern Festival, held along the banks of the Love River (its usual venue) was a rather washed out affair as the rain kept most people away for the first few days. Water and Lanterns don't mix for two reasons, the first that the lanterns are usually powered by electricity to provide fiery eyes, wobbly heads or authentic looking flames shooting out of mouths! They are also traditionally and typically made of paper so unless a large pile of papier mache is required it is advisable to move the lanterns indoors!Kaohsiung's Lantern Festival this year was designed to promote the city as the host of the 2009 World Games (a large advertisement if you may). The initial idea was that it would feature lanterns designed to reflect various athletic themes related to the World Gam...
Do The Taiwanese Still Eat Dog?
2007-03-17 00:15:00 Many people have asked me the question, "do the Taiwan ese eat dog meat"? I must admit that the Taiwanese do love strange meats, night market stalls sizzle with unquantifiable products and although they can't be placed easily (for the most part it is best not to know) and do actually taste nice I never know what I am actually nibbling on. Pig intestines or long-toed chicken feet are not on my list of snacks of an evening anyway, I prefer non-'meatish' products like frozen plum juice on a stick or little puff pastries with honey inside of them. I am though convinced that in Kaohsiung eating dog is a 'thing' of the past! A few weeks ago I might have said otherwise, having just eaten some beef noodles that neither looked nor tasted like beef, but there are now so many stray dogs in my area that if somebody wanted to open up a dog restaurant they would have a free supply of meat for the first year.I'm not sure what the Taiwanese liking for stray dogs is! Blatant Copyright Abuse but I love it!
2007-03-14 03:20:00 After much soul searching (bit like using Google except without all the stupid results) I have decided to use those two articles that I leant to Suite101. Their copyright suggested that they have control of the articles for one whole year, but then they didn't like them, abused them to the extent that they chopped 95% of the content out and anyway, they also said that if the copyright was abused I would be excluded from Suite101 - excellent stuff! These articles are now displayed here and resplendent with grammatical errors, spelling mistakes and hard to follow tangents that my articles are so famous for: A Career at Sea By Ieuan DolbyThe Old Russia in Decay By Ieuan DolbyIeuan DolbyMore articles can be found at http://www.seadolby.com More About: Abuse , Love , Love it , Right , Copyright
Suite101 Fails the Test - by a mile!
2007-03-14 01:21:00 Further to my previous posting about suite101, I am saddened to have to report that their website is well, disappointing to the extreme! As a quick brief; my experiment with Suit e 101 was to see if they were a cut above the other article hosting sites out there or simply money grabbing freaks who would slit their own grandmothers throat for another cent in profit! Today they showed their true colours! I received an email from some 'stuck in her chair' editor who said "Firstly, I have severely edited and postdated both your Merchant Navy and Russian Oil articles because they both had very little tangible information for readers, were not substantiated with factual research and sources, and were written in a voice that is not appropriate for Suite. Suite 101 - The Article Posting Site
2007-03-09 01:53:00 There are many article posting sites on the web. Most of them rely on "rubbish" being generated with as many words as possible squashed together in the text! In fact copying the life and times of Solzhenitsyn and then turning it into a series of 1000+ articles would provide as much contextual use to those looking to read a good article as the stuff that is actually out there today. The web has become the source of "rubbish", in fact by publishing the works of Solzhenitsyn, upside down and back-to-front, the possibility of generating money through contextual advertising has been made. Simply publish the streams of words, wait for web trawlers to visit the site and then wait for them to click on the Google advertising to move on once they realise that the website has no value at all. And this simple click generates cash for the webmaster - why else do you think people put adverts on their websites, tis certainly not to look pretty?I do this! I have a website that generates a small amou... More About: Article , Post , Site , Sting , Suite
Unemployed and at the end of the queue
2007-03-08 12:59:00 One fine day I woke up in the morning and decided that today would be the start of the rest of my life! I woke up, wrote an email to the office, with the abrupt end result that I resigned from my job as a Technical Advisor on the Pacific Endeavour in Russia, in fact I resigned from Swire Pacific Offshore complete! The next day I decided that yesterday had not quite been the start of the rest of my life; it was in fact the start of yet another soul-searching period, that of trying to find a permanent shore-side job! I have written about this before, my life-long attempt to find suitable employment on land instead of at sea but never yet have I been offered anything suitable or with wages that reflect my enthusiasm, qualifications and skill. The article that I wrote in 2004, titled The Fifteen Year Job Search spoke volumes about my attempts to find shore-side employment and that so far all had failed. Now three years on I am at the bottom of the ladder of what could become a new articl... More About: Queue
Next Installment of the Alberto Vilar fiasco
2007-03-08 12:51:00 Regarding the previous posting on the Amerindo Internet fiasco, Graciela Lecube-Chavez told me some more about the situation. I wont repeat the mail I received from her verbatim as most of it is personal but these words say it all!..........I deposited my retirement check withVilar, as suggested by Carmen Vilar, his stepmother. We were close friends, and when her second husband—Alber to's father passed away—Carmen onlyhad praise for her "generous and doting" stepson. He was the macho incharge of her assets, as well of those of his two sisters "because womendidn't know how to manage money." ..............Turns out in fact that Alberto even turned his back on his stepmother, stopped calling her and basically ruined her life and those of his sisters to boot! The Amerindo Fund and the Albert and Tanaka Villains
2007-03-06 06:44:00 Every so often I get an email that reaches out to me! I nearly deleted the following email from my inbox as at first glance I thought it was classic spam, a cry for my bank account number and pin (these things do happen) but luckily I read further and realised that it was sent by an honest person and in response to my article on the collapse of the Amerindo Investment Fun d. Many people lost life savings due to the villainous activities of those in-charge of this fund, namely Alber t Vilars and Gary Tanaka and will never get this money back! Graciela Lecube-Chavez is one of those people and here is what she has to say............I need to reach someone who could listen to my story of how I lost the last dollars of my pension money in the hands of this elegant and devilish thief. After learning the awful news from the postal investigators, I suffered what the doctors defined as "accute inflamation of the nerve system." Breaking Ice and Betel Nut Beauties
2007-02-22 03:42:00 After two months of breaking ice, a small dent made, I have now returned to civilisation and non-fattening food! My last entry was two months ago before I set off for Russia, the beginning of a trip into the unknown and the minus thirty degrees that caused a shiver to run up and down my spine just thinking about it. I have written a series of articles covering this trip, they meander through my arrival in Russia, my time on-board and the trip back-home and should answer any question regarding life on and off Sakhalin Island, Northern Russia - as I saw it. These articles are titled The Russian Winter Articles and are separate but complement the Russian Summer Articles which are all on the same page. And now that I am back home, nearly thawed out and at the computer it is time to plan ahead. Last time home I had great trouble with my domain name and website (the dark side to hosting such a site as this) and now I am still having the same problems. A quick hop from Johor to Singapore
2006-12-21 11:56:00 At 1200hrs I was picked up from my hotel in Johor Bahru and was driven rapidly and efficiently across the border posts and into Sing apore to arrive at my next stopping point, the Allson Hotel (pictured left) at 1300hrs. A rapid displacement of my body from the lack of care and green slime of the Hyatt Regency to the fast and efficiency of downtown Singapore.I could also say that the shift was from the bland marble of the Hyatt Lobby to the to the wooden apples and swans (pictured left) of the Allson Hotel but at the end of the day a lobby has no place in the greater scheme of events! My driver did his bit for his personal economy! As Singapore prices are far higher than Malaysian it makes sense to top up with fuel in Malaysia before returning home! There are though a few restrictions on fuel buying, for example the fuel tanks of all Singaporean registered cars leaving Singapore must be 3/4 full and this is checked at the border post when departing! Upon return the tank can then only... More About: Quick
Wasting time in Johor Bahru
2006-12-21 02:40:00 I couldn't sit in my room yesterday evening! The rooms air conditioning control allowed adjustment of the room temperature to between zero degrees and plus thirty! When I switched it on I iced-up (maybe good acclimatisation for Russia but unwelcome) and when I switched it off I boiled over! Combine this personal global-warming surroundings with the fact that the green slime on the window had enjoyed the recent rains, nearly shutting out all outside light to the room, I decided that some fresh air and a look at Johor Bahru would be a wise decision! And so off I set! The shirt at the hotel reception desk informed me that the best (and closest) shopping mall would be the Holiday Plaza and so into a red taxi I jumped! I can confirm without doubt that this place is suffering de-colonialism through neglect! Everywhere large dirty buildings stand forlornly next to once gaily painted and pink houses! Leaning traffic signs and islands in the road that have long since provided assault cours... More About: Time , Sting
And So the Journey Begins
2006-12-20 12:48:00 It would be extremely boring for me to write here that, "today I left for the ship, I caught a plane to Russia and arrived on the vessel this evening".No, sireee! I cannot make or write in this insufficient manner! I have far more interesting things to talk about and lets face it, life for me tends to be rather more complicated, a mishmash of roads intersecting each other rather than the usual tree-lined avenues that others walk along! To start at the beginning of this now underway spaghetti junction; I caught a plane at Kaohsiung International Airport on the 17th December after a bucket-filling session of tears with my wife and a "no you can't come with me" push away session with my curious son! After that; it was onwards to Bangkok (can't say much for the new airport as they shuffled me from arrivals to the low-lighted departure lounge without stopping for breath at a duty free shop) and then on to Singapore! A Seafarer's Departure to Russia
2006-12-13 02:04:00 Alas, it is time for me (soonish) to pack my bags and return to the 'other' life! Like an unwitting schizophrenic whose symptoms last far longer than the real life disorder I will soon enter that other world - I know not which of my existences is fantasy and which is real! Am I escaping to the sea or do I escape into family life when I return from the sea? I look forward to returning to sea, not quite as much as I look forward to returning to my family at the end of the trip, but adventure always calls and the itchy-feet itch! This trip will be different from many others that I have under my belt! I am to join the same ship as I sailed upon last time, the Ice-Breaking Supply Vessel (IBSV) the Pacific Endeavour in Russia n Waters, but this time an added feature will bring new and uncharted territory to me!That of ICE!Last time I was there I joined the vessel in mid-summer, the Island of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk was experiencing a heat wave that cracked the surprised thermometers at plus 30... The Kiku Election Fever in Kaohsiung
2006-12-12 02:09:00 Last Saturday, Koahsiung and Taipei were in the grip of election fever as the DPP (Democratic Progressive Party) and the KMT (Chinese Nationalist Party) went head to head for the mayoral-ships of the two strongholds (DPP in Southern Taiwan, KMT in the North)! The outcome of the election was little changed as both maintained their control and both increased the number of seats they held at the expense of the renegade James Chu-yu Soong with his PFP (Peoples First Party). An election result that will probably see the end of the PFP or a re-integration of the party into the KMT!The only real change that the election brought upon the citizens of Taiwan was the election of Kiku Chen as the Mayor of Kaohsiung (DPP) and the fact that her fridge magnets are now selling for as much as 2,000 NTD (40 Pounds) for the set of 12! Kiku is a rather awesome woman! I first saw a picture of her on a billboard as my family and I drove towards our new apartment prior to moving in! My reaction upon seeing... An Authority on Writing
2006-12-11 13:46:00 I am positive that most writers write about writing at one point or another, especially when they are feeling down or a sold concrete wall with no exits has surrounded all other possible topics!I have authored my fair share of articles on 'writing', I admit that many of them are typical of thousands of other splurges out there! I also agree that these articles are nothing special and come with the usual grammatical errors and spelling mistakes that I am best known for! One particular article of mine titled The True Writer was recently commented on at the buzzle.com website! I would not normally bring my trouble and strife's from one website to here but the article comment (left by a name Chris Popp) annoyed me greatly! A good writer expects criticism and an even better writer can use it to his advantage! Nobody though likes critics who use foul language and who resort to toilet humour to make a point! I was saddened to read his comment, firstly because he used language that kept... More About: Writing , Author , Authority , On Writing , Thor
